The Digital Harrisburg Initiative and Center for Public Humanities are pleased to announce the publication of a special issue of Pennsylvania History titled “Harrisburg, Digital Public History, and the ‘City Beautiful’.” The issue takes a new look at Harrisburg’s City Beautiful movement in the early twentieth century in light of new data of the Digital Harrisburg Project, archival records from the Pennsylvania State Archives, and public humanities work in the city. The issue includes articles by four Messiah College educators—Jean Corey (director, Center for Public Humanities), Jim LaGrand (College Honors Program), Andrew Hermeling (former coordinator of Digital Harrisburg), and David Pettegrew (professor of History and Archaeology)—as well as four Messiah College students: Rachel Williams (History, 2019), Sarah Wilson Carter (History, 2019), Anna Strange (History, 2020), and Molly Elspas (History, 2021). Student Trading Competition

Congratulations to the Messiah College investing team currently ranked 1st in the nationwide Bloomberg Trading Challenge. This annual trading competition, which began Feb. 3, includes hundreds of undergraduate and graduate teams from colleges and universities around the U.S. Each team began with a $1 million notional portfolio to invest and Messiah’s top-ranked team has gained $280,000 in 4 weeks relative to a market decline of (15%) over the same time period.

Congrats to the Messiah team consisting of Levi Greenly, Daniel McGarvey, Daniel Preziosi, Montana Lutz and Zach Smith.

Weigel also presented a preconference primer on creating and sustaining first-year seminars with colleagues from the John N. Gardner Institute and University 101 Programs at the University of South Carolina.

Mosaic has just had its 10,000^th downloaded item!  It was…drum roll, please…Dr. David Pettegrew’s The Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey: Integrated Methods for a Dynamic Landscape.  So far, Mosaic content has been viewed in 131 countries, Afghanistan to Zimbabwe! The library is appreciative of those who have contributed and we look forward to including many new collections, from educators and students, soon. 

“Under the Veil: Medieval Female Theologians and Their Legacy” lecture by Dr. Sharon Putt

The Gender Concerns Committee and Office of Faculty Development would like to invite you to “Under the Veil: Medieval Female Theologians and Their Legacy” lecture by Dr. Sharon Putt, professor of theology and religion, and recipient of a 2019-2020 Riegsecker Gender Concerns grant. Medieval female theologians thought and wrote innovative, provocative theological treatises for the church and, for centuries, the Christian tradition has, with few exceptions, dismissed and ignored them. During these times of extreme gender inequality, church leaders charged these holy women with ailments such as hysteria, narcissism, neurosis and nymphomania. One of these women, however, gained the respect and the ear of a pope. Benedictine Abbess Hildegard of Bingen left us with hundreds of letters and songs, books on healing, physiology and ecology, as well as theological treatises that, if we listen, address contemporary concerns about earth care and peace-making. Her theology of love for God, each other and the earth reaches across the centuries and remains relevant to any person who has ears to hear and heart to respond. Come and hear Putt explore Hildegard’s thought and seek to find ways to incorporate her ideas into our lives for the benefit of the world in which we live. Join us Wednesday, March 25 at 6:15 p.m. in Boyer 131.

Spring Shred Day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding with a shred truck on campus from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. The truck will be located at the top of the access road between Fry hall and the library where the access road and the brick walkway meet. Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed.

What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data and all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED. Also, documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Shredding instructions

Normal shredding needs: Please bring all paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled. The shredding truck will leave promptly at 1 p.m., so we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.

Special shredding needs: If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, IT Security Analyst, at ext. 6790.

Having served Messiah College for over 25 years, Paula Maynard, associate registrar for the School of Graduate Studies, has accepted a position as the registrar at Penn State Harrisburg. Paula’s last day with us at Messiah will be March 6. Throughout her career, we always appreciated her expertise and tireless work in support of our students. We all wish her the very best in her new position.

Congratulations to Dr. Erik Lindquist, professor of biology and environmental science, on being awarded a Fulbright Specialist Award for summer 2020. The Fulbright Specialist Program is a U.S. Department of State program that matches highly qualified U.S. academics across a range of disciplines with host institutions from over 150 countries to share expertise and make significant contributions to joint projects. Erik will be working at Methodist College – Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) in June and July as the lead panelist on a wildlife trafficking forum. He will also teach MCKL students and work with MCKL faculty on curricular improvement in environmental science, including field experiences and research.

“Seeing and Believing: The Art and Social Science of Interfaith Engagement”

Academic Summer Camp Leaders

Messiah University stationery

Please note this reminder and second notice regarding all printing needs and the pending university status change which is slated to occur on July 1.

The University Implementation Team has developed a new stationery package for Messiah University including letterhead, envelopes and business cards. In addition to the change in our name, our address of One College Avenue will be changing to One University Avenue.  All offices, departments and programs must transition to this new university design and the new address. We may begin usage starting July 1.

Additionally, all campus offices, departments and programs must discontinue use of the previous Messiah College stationery design after Sept. 1.

Timeline for ordering Messiah University stationery

Orders for “on-time delivery” (July 1-10) can be placed be placed now and should be submitted prior to 2020 Commencement. May 15 will be the last day orders are accepted for guaranteed on-time delivery.

Billing for updated stationery

Orders will be billed using department organization numbers, the printing account number -6313, and a temporary activity code which has been set up for tracking printing charges related to the name change.

Help us introduce Messiah University!

There are just a few more months until we become Messiah University—what an exciting time for us as a campus community! To commemorate this milestone, we are producing a unique, professional video that will launch on July 1 to introduce Messiah University to the world. But we need your help!

WHAT

Per the mass email sent to employees yesterday, Messiah is partnering with Kivett Productions, out of Orlando, Florida, to produce a “card stunt” reveal of the new Messiah University logo from our current college logo.

WHO

To make this a success, we will need 200 volunteers from across campus, and that is where you come in! You are invited to be a part of this fun and distinctive video. A key goal of this project is to showcase that it is the people of Messiah that make our campus community such a special place.

WHEN

Filming will occur on Shoemaker Field on Tuesday, April 7, from 8:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (rain location: Jordan Court.) Volunteers must be available for the entire three-hour window, which will include a briefing by the director, placement of individuals for the card stunt, and the filming itself.

REGISTER

If you’d like to volunteer, please discuss with your immediate supervisor before registering. Supervisors, please make every effort possible to allow employees to participate if they wish. You may register to volunteer by using this link. Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Confirmation and additional details will be sent to registered volunteers as we near the filming date.

Dwayne Safer, assistant professor of finance, recently spoke at The Economist’s signature Investing for Impact conference in New York City. He spoke on a panel entitled “Impact for the Next Generation” where he addressed Gen Z investing trends as well as the growing movement of faith-based investing and aligning portfolios with God-honoring investments.

Spring Break housing information

Over Spring Break the residence halls and apartments will be locked from noon on Saturday, March 14 until 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 21. Residential students can stay during break in their rooms, apartments or special interest houses, but MUST register to stay on-campus. Students who do not register will not have card swipe access for the apartments and residence halls. If you know of students who will need to stay on-campus for ANY part of Spring Break, please have them fill out the spring break housing form by Friday, March 6. New this year! Our Readers’ Workshop will delve into readings by C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Speaker Dr. Paul D. Miller, “Christianity, National Identity, and America’s Role in the World”

What does it mean to be an American? What is America’s role in the world? And how should Christians approach these questions? Americans and Christians have offered different answers to these questions over the course of American history. Dr. Paul D. Miller is a Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He serves as co-chair of the Global Politics and Security concentration in the MSFS program. He is also a non-resident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. As a practitioner, Dr. Miller served as Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff; worked as an intelligence analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency; and served as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. Dr. Miller holds a Ph.D. in international relations and a B.A. in government from Georgetown University, and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University. Fire extinguishing training

According to recent data released by the US Fire Administration for 2008-2017, the US had an annual average of 1,344,100 fires, resulting in 3,190 civilian deaths, 16,225 civilian injuries, and $14.7 billion in direct property loss each year. Don’t become part of these statistics.

Fire extinguisher training will be offered on campus Tuesday, Feb. 25 through Thursday, Feb. 27. Multiple sessions will be offered during these days. All training sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel, Room 113 and will include hands-on use of the Bullex© Simulation System. This allows you to experience the “feel” of a real extinguisher without any adverse impact on the environment. Class size is limited so you must register. Advisor needed for Spring Break 2020 service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is in search of a professional staff advisor for our Spring Break service trip to Priority One Ministries (Bronx, NY). Priority One Ministries is a long-time partner of Messiah College. Volunteers will actively engage with impoverished communities in the greater NYC area, assisting with a Breakfast and Lunch Ministry program for the homeless; an after-school program for tutoring inner-city children; the World Vision storehouse and more! The Spring Break service trip will take place from March 14-20. All costs are covered for trip advisors. Because we seek to make our service trips an opportunity for student leaders to grow and develop skills in leading, reflection and facilitation, the trip advisor simply serves as a resource and encouragement for student leaders and assists in any problem-solving that may arise. Create a mini golf hole

Murray Library’s 4th annual Mini Golf in the Stacks will be held on Feb. 28 and we are looking for some teams to create holes. Student/alumni successfully pass CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Dan McGarvey, senior finance major, who along with alumni Brian Gilroy ’19 and Adam Sylvester ’19 successfully passed Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 73,000 candidates sat for the December CFA exam worldwide and the pass rate was only 42%.

We wish Dan, Brian and Adam continued success as they move on to Level II of the exam!

LCC International – Feb. 7: Students get to live and learn from other students from Eastern Europe as they study in Lithuania. Being a larger university, the course offerings include business, theology, communication and psychology.

ISA/Veritas: Wednesday, Feb. 12 – We send students to 6 different locations (Chile, England, S. Korea, S. Africa, France, Spain) ranging in areas of interest for STEM majors, modern languages, dance, business, etc.

Chicago Semester: Monday, Feb. 17 – Located in the heart of the Windy City, students can get hands-on practicum experience while taking classes. They have tracks for social work, communication, art/design, marketing, applied health sciences and more.

LLI Ecuador – March 31: Students experience the Latin American culture up-close and personal as they participate in home stays, participate in an internship or service learning, and take courses regarding faith formation, biological studies, intercultural communications and world religions. MENDELSSOHN PIANO TRIO and CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH BALLET “War and Peace II”

This second concert focusing on “War and Peace” commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II by examining the deep cultural shift that happens as a result of war. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio in collaboration with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) will present the deeply romantic Arensky Piano Trio choreographed by Alan Hineline, followed by the searingly dramatic Shostakovich Piano Quintet, vividly illustrating the changes in human experience brought on by materialism and violence in the 20th century.

Highmark provides virtual medicine services

The flu and other illnesses are rampant at this time of year. If you are sick, the last thing you want to do is leave your warm home to go the doctor where there are other sick people. Highmark Blue Shield provides their members’ access to the Virtual Medicine Benefit. This is also known as telemedicine. You can see a doctor 24/7 using your computer, tablet or smartphone for non-emergency care for things such as sinus infections, bronchitis, flu, conjunctivitis, etc. For those on the high deductible plan, telemedicine is covered at 100% after deductible. For those on the PPO Plan who haven’t met their deductible yet, their cost will be approx. $59. For those on the PPO who have met their deductible, telemedicine is covered at 100% after a $10 copay. “Love Your Neighbors: Immigrant Stories” – Feb. 18, 7:15-8:30 p.m. on the library’s main level

Immigration is an important and sensitive topic in our country’s current narrative and too often there is an incorrect and harmful perception of immigrants. To counter this, the library, in partnership with the peace and conflict studies program, is planning a presentation featuring and honoring immigrants’ stories as part of the Humanities Symposium on vulnerability and security. In an effort to add depth, nuance and understanding to the so-called “immigrant story” (which is actually many, many different stories), we have invited four individuals at Messiah who have immigrated to the U.S. more recently to tell their stories.

From different regions of the world, of different ages and backgrounds, the diversity of our speakers’ experiences represents just how different the paths of those who come to the United States are.

Our colleagues: Joanna Matlak who lived behind the Iron Curtain in Poland and Prof. Gladys Robalino from Ecuador

Students: Erik Joloka who had to leave his home in Liberia due to war and Ambreen Imran, a hijabi Muslim from Pakistan, will tell about their experiences, their path to the U.S., when they may have felt vulnerable, as well as when they’ve felt secure (the topic of the Humanities Symposium), and perhaps something they wish people knew about their experience.

Advisor needed for Spring Break 2020 service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is in search of a professional staff advisor for our Spring Break service trip to Priority One Ministries (Bronx, NY). Priority One Ministries is a long-time partner of Messiah College. Volunteers will actively engage with impoverished communities in the greater NYC area, assisting with a Breakfast and Lunch Ministry program for the homeless; an after-school program for tutoring inner-city children; the World Vision storehouse and more! The Spring Break service trip will take place from March 14-20. All costs are covered for trip advisors. Because we seek to make our service trips an opportunity for student leaders to grow and develop skills in leading, reflection and facilitation, the trip advisor simply serves as a resource and encouragement for student leaders and assists in any problem-solving that may arise. Matthew Doll art exhibition “Night, Desert, Garden”

Matthew Doll is a painter and graphic designer, and the program director of the Gordon IN Orvieto semester program, where his Disegno/Drawing course serves as the cornerstone of the curriculum. 2020 Humanities Symposium Keynote Address

The speaker for the 2020 Humanities Symposium will be Anthony Ray Hinton. Mr. Hinton, author of the best-selling book, “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row,” has become an advocate for reform in America’s criminal justice system. Create a Mini Golf Hole

Murray Library’s 4th annual Mini Golf in the Stacks will be held on Feb. 28 and we are looking for some teams to create holes. We would love to see students work together to make a hole that tells us about their major, what they are learning or the future in that field. We would also enjoy having holes from different departments across campus – in past years there have been representatives from Public Safety, Campus Events, the Engle Center, Nursing Department, EYAS, The Loft, Disability Services, Career Development, the Oakes Museum and more! Student/alumni successfully pass CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Dan McGarvey, senior finance major, who along with alumni Brian Gilroy ’19 and Adam Sylvester ’19 successfully passed Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 73,000 candidates sat for the December CFA exam worldwide and the pass rate was only 42%.

LCC International – Feb. 7: Students get to live and learn from other students from Eastern Europe as they study in Lithuania. Being a larger university, the course offerings include business, theology, communication and psychology.

ISA/Veritas: Wednesday, Feb. 12 – We send students to 6 different locations (Chile, England, S. Korea, S. Africa, France, Spain) ranging in areas of interest for STEM majors, modern languages, dance, business, etc.

Chicago Semester: Monday, Feb. 17 – Located in the heart of the Windy City, students can get hands-on practicum experience while taking classes. They have tracks for social work, communication, art/design, marketing, applied health sciences and more.

LLI Ecuador – March 31: Students experience the Latin American culture up-close and personal as they participate in home stays, participate in an internship or service learning, and take courses regarding faith formation, biological studies, intercultural communications and world religions. Residence Life is pleased to welcome Trevor Magness and Curtis Kurtz to the RD team (filling the vacancies of Becky Woodruff and Ambria Eberhard-Brown). Trevor, the new Mountain View and Special Interest House Interim RD, will continue to serve 10 hours a week in the SILP office as part of his RD role (where he served formerly as graduate assistant). Curtis, the new Sollenberger and Mellinger Interim RD (and Messiah alum and former RA), joins us with RD experience from Shippensburg University. Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to process passport applications.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

• Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
• Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
• Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page

During each Pizza with Professional event, the speaker (usually a Messiah alum) will talk to students about their career path, current position, and any job or internship opportunities available within their organization. Students will then have an opportunity to ask questions of the speaker. Free pizza will also be served.
