President’s Open Door Day

President Phipps will host an Open Door Day on Oct. 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to meet individually with students and employees on topics that are important to them. Open Door Day will take place in the president’s office on the second floor of Old Main. A sign-in sheet will be located in Old Main room 207 starting at 1p.m. on Oct. 30. Open Door Day is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and now host of the radio program, “Live from Here,” is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. A Grammy winner for his work on “The Goat Rodeo Sessions,” a collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan, he also won a Grammy for “Bass + Mandolin” with Edgar Meyer.In 2018, Punch Brothers released the Grammy-winning “All Ashore,” which Pop Matters described as “a call to savor, to pay attention, to step back from the hustle and bustle and remember the importance of being calm.”

Archives administration changes

Starting in the 2019-20 academic year, Messiah College has merged the three archives that exist on its campus: the Archives of Messiah College, the Brethren in Christ Historical Library and Archives, and the Ernest L. Boyer Center Archives. The merger creates opportunities for operational and administrative efficiencies while simultaneously allowing each unit to maintain its own unique identity and collecting policy under a common mission: to preserve and provide access to materials that document the history of Messiah College, its faculty, its alumni, and its founding denomination, the Brethren in Christ Church. Devin Manzullo-Thomas, who formerly oversaw the work of the Boyer Center Archives, will provide leadership to the merged archives as director of archives. Glen Pierce, who formerly directed the work of the College and Brethren in Christ archives, will continue in a revised role as archives assistant.

2019 American Democracy Lecture

Join us for the 2019 American Democracy Lecture on Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The Center for Public Humanities and the Department of Politics and International Relations are pleased to welcome Dr. Steven Levitsky, professor of government at Harvard University and New York Times best-selling author. Dr. Levisky has published extensively on authoritarian regimes and the rise of despots and will draw on his book “How Democracies Die,” to discuss the warning signs and the crucial elements needed to protect a free democracy. A reception and a book-signing event will take place immediately following the lecture. We do hope that you will join us for this important and timely discussion.

Annual soup and dessert sale

The Division of Finance and Planning’s annual soup sale to benefit local families for Christmas will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Spend an Evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist George Will

George Will speaks on “The Political Argument Today” on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Will is today’s most widely read columnist. His newspaper column has been syndicated by The Washington Post since 1974. Today, it appears twice weekly in approximately 500 newspapers in the U.S. and in Europe. In addition, he serves as a contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. In 1976, he became a regular contributing editor of Newsweek magazine, for which he provided a bimonthly essay until 2011. For 32 years, beginning as a founding member in 1981, he was a panelist on ABC television’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” In 1977, he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary for his newspaper columns. Altogether eight collections of Will’s Newsweek and Washington Post columns have been published, the most recent being “One Man’s America.” In 1990, Will published “Men At Work: The Craft of Baseball,” which topped The New York Times best-seller list for two months. Will was educated at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, Oxford University and Princeton University, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He has taught political philosophy at Michigan State University and the University of Toronto. Will served as a staff member in the U.S. Senate from 1970 to 1972. From 1973 through 1976, he was the Washington editor of National Review magazine. Today, Will lives and works in Washington, D.C.

Important reminder to faculty – 2020 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines set

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2020 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810 Procedure review:

Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS/copyright specialist (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Contract investigators conducting reference/background checks on Campus

The Department of Safety wants to remind all employees of the protocol in place for contract investigators coming on to campus. A contract investigator is a non-campus employee who is contracted by an agency to check the backgrounds of present and former students. The agency could be a subcontractor of the government, from a state or local agency or from the military. These individuals ARE REQUIRED to stop at the Department of Safety office FIRST before going on to campus to visit other departments. When they stop at the Department of Safety first, we check their credentials, we require to see a release form signed by the student that they are conducting the check on, and we have them complete a “sign-in” form. If all these items are provided, we provide them with a Department of Safety investigator ID card, a temporary parking permit, and they will have a copy of the sign-in form that is signed by our department. If an investigator shows up in your office, you should be asking to see the sign-in form that is filled out by our office and the Department of Safety investigator ID card as well.

If you do not see both of these, you should not be providing any information to them. Kindly advise them that there is a protocol in place for investigators to be on campus and that they must first go to the Department of Safety office (located in Greenbriar, gray building on the left as they exit the main entrance to campus) to get permission and an ID before you will provide any information to them. If they refuse to come to our office, or if they continue to request the information, please call the Dispatch Office at ext. 6005 (on campus phone) or by cell at 717-691-6005. Let the dispatcher know what is going on and an officer will be sent to your location to speak with the investigators.

Please understand that some of these contract investigators are from a law enforcement agency and may have a holstered firearm on them. This can cause alarm to others on campus if seen. This is why we require them to stop at our office first so we know who is on campus and know that they have been cleared to be here. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Department of Safety and ask to speak to a supervisor; ext. 6005 or 717-691-6005.

Join Geisinger Holy Spirit and the Messiah College School of Graduate Studies for an informative Community Conversation – Opioids Not Needed: Identifying Alternatives-Improving Quality of Life, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at Messiah College’s High Center. Emceed by ABC 27’s Amanda Peterson, a panel of medical experts including: Dr.Theresa Burick, Dr. Michael Suk, Dr. Amy Humphrey, and Shan Padda of Harvard Medtech will discuss alternatives to opioid use for pain management.

President’s Open Door Day

Fall 2019 Shred Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, Shredding Solutions will provide a truck on campus for confidential document shredding. The truck will be located at the top of the access road between Frey Hall and the library (located where the access road and the brick walkway meet) and will be available from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed.

What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data and all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (a paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Shredding instructions

Normal shredding needs: Please bring all the paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m., we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.).

Special shredding needs: If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, IT security analyst, at ext. 6790. All shredding arrangements must be made before the close of business Thursday, Oct. 17. For special requests or other questions, please contact Allen Snook, at ext. 6790.

Come view two art exhibitions from the Bowden Collection, Oct. 18 – Nov. 2

Please join us at Messiah’s Homecoming Weekend as we celebrate the opening of two concurrent exhibitions of German expressionist prints on loan from the collection of Sandra and Robert Bowden at The Galleries at Messiah College. A lecture by Dr. Daniel Siedell, Biblical Imagination in Modern Art, will be given on Oct. 18 at 4:15 p.m. in the High Foundation Recital Hall, High Center.

“Was God Dead?” highlights the role that Biblical imagery played in German expressionist printmaking with 60 works by artists like Beckmann, Corinth, Dix, Kandinsky, Kollowitz, Schmidt-Rotluff, Munch and others.

Save the Date Human Library Project – Unjudge Someone

Please Save the Date of April 1, 2020 to attend the 3rd Annual Messiah College Human Library Project in Murray Library.

Immerse yourself in the pages of the books right in front of you. The 3rd annual Human Library Project is where Messiah students, faculty and staff become open books, sharing their personal stories with readers. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. Please save the date of Wednesday, April 1, 2020 from noon-4 p.m. (you can read one or multiple books depending upon your schedule).

What is the “second tuition” for students?

The CCCU recently referred to the high cost of textbooks as students’ second tuition. This affects student retention and student success! During Open Access week (Oct. 21-27), the Library is offering 2 programs on open educational resources (OERs) and other free options in lieu of expensive textbooks. Both programs are designed to fit into a lunch hour (bring your bag lunch; cookies and coffee available!)

Wednesday, Oct. 23 (noon-12:50 p.m.), in the Learning Commons: Hear from faculty members who have adopted either open access textbooks or e-books available from the library, and also hear about a database of open access textbooks worth exploring.

Halloween Safety

Did you know children are hit and killed by a vehicle two times more often on Halloween than any other day of the year? If you’re a driver, use extra caution and drive slower during the hours of trick or treat. And if you’re a parent, here’s some tips to keep your chid(ren) safe during this fun time:

• Have each child carry or wear something lit, such as a flashlight (with fresh batteries), glow stick, or even light-up shoes for visibility. Consider adding reflective tape to costumes.

• Avoid costumes and accessories that create tripping hazards. Costumes that drag on the ground, ill-fitting shoes or high-heels, and masks that don’t allow full visibility create walking hazards.

• Don’t allow your children to cut across yards; obstacles could exist that aren’t readily visible in the evening. Stress that they should walk, not run; stay on sidewalks and in cross-walks as much as possible; and look both ways before crossing streets.

• Only trick or treat at houses with outside lights on. Residents who do not wish to be bothered by trick or treaters often have their lights turned off as a sign; respect their preference.

• Young children should be escorted by an adult. If your child is older and going without adult supervision, establish a pre-planned route and curfew time. Make sure s/he has a cell phone to contact you in the event of an emergency.

• Have your child wait until you can inspect the treats. Discard anything slightly or not completely wrapped. If your child has food allergies, read the ingredients carefully.

Halloween should be a fun-filled holiday for children. Please do your part to keep it that way.

Chicago Semester program rep visit

On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21 and 22, Sara (Van Gorp) Chiang, a representative from Chicago Semester will be on campus to talk to students about studying in Chicago, IL.

This program offers a variety of tracks. The 16-week semester program delivers a custom-tailored Chicago experience designed to prepare students for their chosen career – and life after college. The Chicago Semester staff work closely and collaboratively with the student to place them in a full-time internship that matches their interests.

Erin Boyd-Soisson, professor of human development and family science, had the article “Family Folklore” published in Macmillan Encyclopedia of Families, Marriages and Intimate Relationships.

Erin Boyd-Soisson, professor of human development and family science, and Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, provided workshops at the PA FCCLA Advisors Retreat in Wilkes-Barre. Erin presented on “Child Development and Care: Sociodramatic Play and Early Childhood Development” and Raeann presented “Interactive Activities to Engage Students in Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecology Theory.”

Representatives from the Cumberland County Courthouse will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 to process passport applications.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page
Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID
Completed application
Fees ($110 check or money order written to the U.S. Department of State and $35 cash or check written to the Prothonotary’s Office)

Congratulations to Denise Albert, College Press and Postal Services bulk mailroom lead technician, who successfully achieved her USPS Mailpiece Design Professional certification. Denise is now certified to review designed publications intended for mailing and render judgments in regards to USPS standards. The course Denise completed included topics such as postal addressing standards, classes of mail and processing categories, barcode formats, reply mail and designing for automation.

This exhibition features selected work by full and part-time members of the Messiah College Art and Design faculty. The exhibition encompasses a variety of approaches to the concepts, materials and methods of art-making, design and exhibition curation. It provides a setting for dialogue between students and their mentors, and an opportunity for the greater community to engage with the creative endeavor of this talented faculty. Exhibition runs Sept. 13-Oct. 9.

Messiah preferred rental vehicle supplier – Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is Messiah’s preferred rental vehicle supplier. Enterprise offers competitive rates regionally and nationally, and will drop off and pick up vehicles on campus. A mid-size/intermediate car accommodates most travelers’ needs and costs just $35.50 per day. A 12 or 15-passenger van costs $97 per day. All required insurance is included in these rates. If you are an Emerald Club member and made arrangements for the car to be dropped off on campus, keys can be picked up from Dispatch. You will be required to present ID and sign a log sheet verifying that you picked up the keys.
If you are not an Emerald Club member, be sure you understand the pick-up/return arrangements – you must be present to sign for the vehicle.

Returning Enterprise vehicles on campus (Emerald Club and non-Emerald Club members)

Park the vehicle in the visitor parking lot, VV on the attached map and lock the doors.
Immediately take the keys to the dispatch window and identify that you are returning an Enterprise rental vehicle. You will be required to present ID and sign a log sheet verifying that you returned the keys.
Email Rachel.A.Plotycia@ehi.com to confirm that the vehicle has been returned. This is an important step and helps eliminate extra charges.

Susanna Caroselli, professor emerita of art history, was invited to contribute a chapter to the book, “Jews in Medieval England: Teaching Representations of the Other,” edited by Miriamne Ara Krummel and Tison Pugh (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017). The book has just been awarded the 2019 Teaching Literature Book Award, an international prize presented biennially by Idaho State University. The committee cited the “range of creative approaches” that have “much to offer teachers of multicultural literature and religious studies who want to explore the historical roots of prejudice with their students.”

Friends of Murray Library 2019 annual dinner and meeting

Join us Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in Martin Commons for the Friends of Murray Library annual dinner and meeting. Kathy T. Hettinga will return to Messiah College to share her work and discuss the process of artist’s books. In her presentation, “Creating Artist’s Books from Object to Identity,” Hettinga will discuss the concepts behind her work and the projects she designed for her students.Drawing from her comprehensive background in drawing/illustration, book arts/typography, photography/scanning, collage and printmaking, Professor Hettinga led and pushed students to excellence in art and design, resulting in their work being published over a dozen times in international design journals. The Kathy T. Hettinga Student Artists’ Book Archive at Murray Library was created from the extensive student book art created under her direction. These works reveal the remarkable depths of meaning and beauty created by her students in response to Hettinga’s guidance and direction.

Passport services

Representatives from the Cumberland County Courthouse will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22 to process passport applications.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

Intro to Introprofessional Education Panel presentation

The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to offer our annual panel presentation that introduces the topic of Interprofessional Education (IPE) to all students, faculty and staff. All are welcome to attend but this is of special interest for those involved with applied health sciences, athletic training, dietetic internship and nutrition, occupational therapy and pre-OT, physical therapy and pre-PT, and nursing.

Join us on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 5-7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel as we welcome panelists from various health professions to hear how they implement IPE in real-world applications. Our guests will discuss their educational backgrounds, professions, and how an interprofessional approach in their setting is beneficial to delivering quality patient care. Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, as a PA State FCS Action Committee member, participated in the FCS Education Northeast Region Summit in Arlington, Virginia, Sept. 15-16, as part of the National Partnership for recruiting, preparing, and supporting FCS education.

Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed a concert at Duke Divinity School (Duke University) on Sept. 7 with The New Caritas Orchestra under the baton of theologian/musician Jeremy Begbie. The orchestra was comprised of 37 Christian orchestral musicians from top orchestras and music schools from the U.S., including the Boston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony. The concert, titled “Creation and New Creation” was presented in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts.

He has recently appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Alberto Roc in the American premiere of Thomas Ades’s “The Exterminating Angel,” as well as Danilo in “The Merry Widow” opposite Susan Graham. Trekking to Tokyo- an employee wellness program

Tracking our daily steps (or step equivalents) often helps us get closer to our daily goal of 10,000 per day. We’re hoping this 10-week wellness program beginning on Sunday, Sept. 22 will do just that. The good news is that ANY activity counts, not just walking. An easy chart and recording form converts all types of aerobic activity to steps. Those who submit their previous week’s total (online) by Monday at midnight each week, and also average 40,000 steps per week will be eligible for free prize drawings at the end of the program. Banned Books Week at Murray Library

What do Winnie the Pooh, Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and the Bible have in common? They were all banned at one time or another! Join Murray Library as we celebrate Banned Books week from Sept. 23-27. “Stop the Bleed” training offered

Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. When severe, uncontrolled bleeding occurs, every second counts. The Department of Homeland Security launched the “Stop the Bleed” campaign to raise public awareness and knowledge on how to prevent these deaths. In an effort to better prepare our campus community for any emergency, “Stop the Bleed” training will be offered on Thursday, Sept. 26 to all employees and all students. This training will be conducted by employees of the Geisinger Holy Spirit Education Center. All sessions will be held in Hostetter Chapel. Sessions are scheduled for 1:30-2:30, 2:45-3:45 and 4-5 p.m. Openings are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up for one of these training sessions, go to FalconLink. International Day of Peace

“The Arts of Peace,” a campus commemoration of the International Day of Peace, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m. in Legacy Park (the rain venue is the High Center Recital Hall). This year the annual event is organized by the Peace and Conflict Studies Program in partnership with the School of the Arts. Local, national and world peace will be promoted through prayer, music, spoken word and dance.

Susquehanna Valley FCU ATM new machine and new location

The Susquehanna Valley FCU ATM has been updated and has a new location on the 2nd floor of ECC. The new ATM is located in the lounge between Lottie Nelson Dining Hall and the Falcon Exchange. Online timesheets are coming!

The Web Time Entry (WTE) system has been used with the student employee’s for over a year with great success. Payroll has slowly been moving the staff employee’s to this system since early 2019. That means for some of you this is already something you use regularly. The time has come to move all areas to the new system. With WTE all hours are recorded, reviewed and approved online. This means no paper timesheets to print out, no signatures to get and no mailing it to payroll, plus it is accessible through your cell phone.

Who is affected by this change?

All hourly staff that currently use paper timesheets AND those that approve their timesheets.

What does this mean to you?

It means that all time reporting and approvals will be done through Self-Service.

When will this happen?

All staff will start using this system with the Sept. 29-Oct. 12 pay period. You should be receiving an email with more details and instructions for you to print out.

Where will I get instructions or have questions answered?

Printable instructions will be included in an email. In addition, there are currently 2 training sessions set for Parmer Cinema à Sept. 24 from 1-2 p.m. and Sept. 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. All staff are invited since there was no real training for the smaller groups that have already started this process.

Pizza with Professionals events for the fall semester

The Career and Professional Development Center has an exciting line-up of Pizza with Professionals events for the fall semester. During these one-hour sessions, a speaker (usually a Messiah alum) will talk to students about his/her career path, current organization and any job or internship openings available there. Sept. 18, Sperry Labs: Andrew Brown’03 will speak to students about his experiences as senior product manager at EA (Electronic Arts), game designer at Play Impossible and his current role as co-founder of the digital consulting firm Sperry Labs.

Oct. 1, alums in the food industry: Five Messiah alumni who are successful entrepreneurs in the food industry will share about their career paths. Panelists are Stephanie Perry ’99, owner of Yellow Bird Café; Heidi Tucker’09, co-owner of Sunshine Bakery; Jeff ’08 and Emily Mitchell ’08, owners of Lancaster Cupcake; and Jeff Conrady’85, owner of the Square Bean.

Oct. 14, Philadelphia Eagles: Bre Grignano ’09 will talk about her game day media/public relations position with the Philadelphia Eagles. She will also speak about Greater than Me, the sports ministry nonprofit she recently founded.

Oct. 30, panel on gap-year experiences: Students will be able to ask questions of panelists and learn what it is like to serve with a nonprofit for a year after college, go abroad on a missions trip before starting full-time employment and participate in a short-term professional fellowship to gain experience and make connections.

Oct. 22, Philadelphia Project: Students will learn more about this urban ministry, which serves the community of Philadelphia through educational programs, home repair and summer ministry experiences. Opportunities are available for internship and volunteer positions.

MUSIC FOR PIANO TIMES TWO III “War and Peace I”

Inspired by the 150th anniversary of the great novel “War and Peace” by Leo Tolstoy, this first of two programs focuses on Tolstoy’s love of the piano, as well as the deep historical connections between the Russian and French cultures, which produced some of the world’s greatest achievements in the arts. Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, and Richard Roberson, dean of the Messiah College School of the Arts, will join piano faculty Patrice Ewoldt and Ya-Ting Chang to perform music for two pianos by Chopin, Chaminade, Milhaud and Debussy, and will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s iconic “1812 Overture.”

Threefold Cord Women’s Choir presents “Love Is”

This Messiah College sponsored choir will perform “Love Is,” an exploration of love as defined by the ancient Greeks. She is now recognized as an expert nurse educator by holding this certificate. Into the City Upstate New York, Oct. 9-12: We are heading to beautiful upstate New York to visit the many Messiah College alumni in the Buffalo area. Dr. Caroline Maurer, dean of the school of business, education and social sciences (BESS), has accepted a position as director of global engagement at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington. Her last day at the College will be Sept. 13. We appreciate Maurer’s leadership during the past six years. Her focus on faculty support and development, community engagement and international education along with her passion for Christian higher education will be missed. We wish her the best in her new position.

Dr. Peter Powers, dean of the school of humanities, has agreed to also serve as interim dean of BESS during this upcoming year. Stephanie Patterson will continue as administrative assistant for the school. The transition to new interim leadership will begin Aug. 26.

Click on “Employee Vehicle Registration” (web form). (Please be sure that you continue until you reach a page that reads, “Completed” and gives you a reference number.) Your parking permit will be sent to you through campus mail.

Previously registered employees – You do not need to re-register. Your current, orange parking permit has an expiration date of August 2019 but is actually valid until August 2020.

Welcome to Enrollment Management!

Sierra Kinslow ’17 will join us as the assistant director of admissions, multicultural recruitment Sept. 2. She has worked in the graduate admissions office for the last two years as a graduate enrollment counselor, and she’ll finish her master’s degree in higher education in May 2020. As a student, she served as an undergraduate admissions student worker, ambassador and Amigo scholar. Kinslow will work with domestic students from Dauphin County and serve our international students. She will lead strategy related to domestic underrepresented student recruitment and international student recruitment and manage the Martin and R.H. Flowers Multicultural Scholarship process.

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 12 new graduate assistants for the academic year 2019-2020 on the Messiah campus and at partner institutions. Welcome Week theme and schedule

Messiah College will be welcoming our new students to campus for the start of Welcome Week Friday, Aug. 30. Our theme for Welcome Week this year is “ALL IN” as we encourage students to take ownership of their Messiah experience, fully committing to their new community and responsibilities. Our theme verse is Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Retirement Reception

Please join the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in thanking Steve Funck for his work at the college and celebrating in his retirement! A reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, between 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Hollinger Atrium of the Jordan Science Center. There will be some brief remarks at 4 p.m. Steve worked as a natural sciences laboratory program manager for 12 years, serving the college exceptionally well in the areas of safety, compliance and chemical inventory control and serving the department in all facets of our laboratory program.

The Career and Professional Development Center is happy to announce the fall schedule of Into the City Mini trips. These trips are designed to provide students with an in-depth look at a local organization and typically include a tour, a chat with employees, networking time and information about any job or internship openings. This event is open to students from all majors and may be of special interest to those interested in event planning, social media, marketing, sales, sports or outdoor activities. • ITC Mini to Katapault Makerspace – Oct. 17, Leave at 2:30 p.m. and return by 5 p.m. Students will be explore a local “makerspace” and learn about the many jobs and internships available with Katapault. We will also meet the many alumni who are employed there and hear about their initiatives in engineering, global relief work and business development. This event is open to any major; students with a background in engineering, computer science, business or global development may be especially interested in attending.

Into the City – Upstate New York

Into the City – Upstate New York – Oct. 9-12 We are heading to beautiful upstate New York to visit the many Messiah College alumni in the Buffalo area. Site visits include the Buffalo Bills, New Era Cap, M&T Bank, Jericho Road, Baillie Lumber and more! Students will also be able to tour the spectacular Finger Lakes region with the option of hiking along the waterfall trails, and will visit Niagara Falls (which will include a boat ride into the falls aboard the incredible “Maid of the Mist”!). Please encourage students from all years and majors to apply. Application deadline is Friday, Sept. 20.

Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, had an article entitled “Family Science” published in Macmillan Encyclopedia of Families, Marriages, and Intimate Relationships.

Dr. Caroline Maurer, dean of the school of business, education, and social sciences (BESS), has accepted a position as director of global engagement at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington. Her last day at the College will be Sept. 13. We appreciate Dr. Maurer’s leadership over the past six years. Her focus on faculty support and development, community engagement, and international education along with her passion for Christian higher education will be missed. We wish her the best in her new position.

Save the date: Community Day

All employees are warmly invited to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as President Phipps’ State of the College address. Student successfully passes CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Levi Greenly, a senior finance major in the Department of Business, for successfully passing Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 250,000 candidates sat for the CFA exams worldwide and the pass rate for Level I was only 41%. Levi’s test score placed him well above the 90th percentile for all the candidates who took the Level I exam in June. The 6-hour exam covered topics in economics, statistics, accounting, corporate finance, equity/fixed income analysis and derivatives. Messiah College has been a member of the CFA University Affiliation program since 2018, which enabled Levi to receive a full scholarship to take the exam. We wish Levi continued success as he moves on to Level II of the exam!

Previously registered employees – You do not need to re-register. Your current, orange parking permit has an expiration date of August 2019, but is actually valid until August 2020.

Welcome Week theme and schedule

Messiah College will be welcoming our new students to campus for the start of Welcome Week on Friday, August 30. Our theme for Welcome Week this year is “ALL IN” as we encourage students to take ownership of their Messiah experience, fully committing to their new community and responsibilities. Our theme verse is Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Welcome to Enrollment Management!

Enrollment Management is excited to announce the addition of two new team members: Marianne Ramirez Gomez ’19 will join us as an admissions counselor, coordinator of Latino student recruitment on August 15. She served as student body vice-president, worked as a student in admissions and the multicultural office, was an ambassador, member of the Multicultural Council and an RH Flower recipient. She has been an intern for the Latino Hispanic American Community Center in Harrisburg and a community service volunteer for two summers in her home city of Reading. Marianne will have domestic territory in southeastern PA, Philadelphia, New York City, central Maryland, Washington DC, Florida and the southwest. She will also assist in planning and supporting Multicultural Scholarship Days and serving on the Ambassador Leadership Team. Sierra Kinslow ’17 will join us as the assistant director of admissions, multicultural recruitment on Sept. 2. She has worked in the graduate admissions office for the last two years as a graduate enrollment counselor, and she’ll finish her master’s degree in higher education in May 2020. As a student, she served as an undergraduate admissions student worker, ambassador and amigo scholar. Sierra will work with domestic students from Dauphin County and serve our international students. She will lead strategy related to domestic underrepresented student recruitment and international student recruitment and manage the Martin’s and R.H. Flowers Multicultural Scholarship process. Please join us in welcoming them!

Multicultural student orientation

Within our commitment to student success and engagement at Messiah College is a strong drive to foster a sense of belonging for all of our students. Based on sound academic research and data, we recognize that students of color face unique challenges on predominantly white campuses. To address this, the Intercultural Office hosts a Multicultural Student Orientation to provide opportunities for our incoming students of color to make early connections with each other and with key educators prior to participating in Welcome Week activities. Please join us in warmly welcoming our students of color and their families to campus on Thursday, Aug. 29, as they arrive for Multicultural Student Orientation and become part of our Messiah College community!

Graduate TESOL students provide ESL camp for Christian school

Four graduate TESOL students, under the direction of their professor, Dr. Jan Dormer, recently provided the instruction for an ESL Camp at Delaware Co. Christian School. The fourteen ESL students had just arrived from China, and ranged from grades 7 to 11. The diverse topics covered in the week of ESL classes ranged from PA ecosystems to group work expectations in American education to an introduction to the Bible. Additional informal English language development occurred through fun outings such as kayaking and a scavenger hunt at King of Prussia mall. Our Graduate TESOL Program is anticipating a strong partnership with Delaware Co. Christian School as they seek to meet the needs of their international students.

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 12 new graduate assistants for the academic year 2019-2020 both on the Messiah campus and at partner institutions. Graduate assistantships offer graduate students the opportunity to put the educational theories gained through classroom instruction into professional practice through supervised, real-world experience. Our graduate assistantship program aims to provide an innovative and cost-efficient way to advance departmental and college-wide goals and objectives.
