Dr. Maude Yacapsin, associate professor of education, presented at the National Women in Educational Leadership Conference held at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL), Oct. 7-10. Her discussion highlighted the importance of how agile leadership and a leader’s comprehensive understanding of online pedagogy are paramount in sustaining quality instruction for teaching and learning. Maude’s work with collaborative and accessible technologies was well received by higher ed leaders and faculty alike. While at UNL, Dr. Yacapsin was invited to attend doctoral candidates’ proposals, dissertation defense presentations and collaborate on future-leader endeavors by her former colleagues in the Department of Higher Educational Administration and Leadership (EDAD). She also had the distinct honor of speaking to a cohort of UNL’s master’s in higher education students on the roles humility and graciousness have as students graduate and continue their careers as servant leaders in higher education.

Beth Transue, librarian, presented her poster, “Above and Beyond: Partnering to Co-Lead and Support Cross Cultural Short-Term Study Abroad Courses,” at the Pennsylvania Library Association Annual Conference. Beth also served as the exhibits co-chair on the conference committee. The conference took place in Harrisburg on Oct. 14-17.

Jean Corey (Department of English) and David Pettegrew (Department of History) presented a talk titled, “History, Poetry, and Place: Recovering the Lost Voices of the Eighth Ward” at Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference on Oct. 6. Todd Goranson, professor of music, gave two performances in Karlstad, Sweden on Sunday, Oct. 14. He performed on soprano saxophone with a Sweden-based professional saxophone quartet for morning services at Tingvallakyrka, followed by an evening performance (on bassoon) with orchestra of the Beethoven Mass in C major at the historic Karlstad Cathedral.

Friday, Nov. 2 is the deadline for submitting requests for fall 2018 events that include technical needs, set-up needs or special permission from the SILP Office. Fall shred day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The truck will be located in the service area parking spots located outside Hoffman Hall and will be available from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding. 1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger several weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack at College Press.
2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_materials. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager, Campus Store and Textbook Express.
4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

History student presentations

The Department of History is pleased to announce successful student poster presentations at the Pennsylvania Historical Association conference in Lancaster on Oct. 13. Arion Dominique (history), David Michael (business administration), Robin Schwarzmann (history), Anna Strange (history), and Rachel Williams (history) presented on research related to City Beautiful, urban reform, population displacement, and racial segregation in Harrisburg and central Pennsylvania between 1900 and 1950. The poster by Arion Dominique and David Michael, titled “Spaces of Fear: Race, Housing, and Travel in South Central PA” (advised by Bernardo Michael) was awarded first prize by conference judges for its originality, currency and balanced analysis.

Life under Mao: a presentation

What was it like living in China during the Cultural Revolution? Was human flourishing possible despite the restrictions? The library is excited to announce a presentation by Dr. Ruth Pickens, who grew up in China under Mao and thoughtfully speaks on her firsthand experience. She has a fascinating and important story to tell and all are invited. The presentation will be on Nov. 5, 7-8 p.m. on the Library’s main floor. The presentation coincides with an exhibit of Ruth’s beautiful and colorful paper cuttings, as well as her copies of Maoist documents and other propaganda, and even her copy of Mao’s “little red book.” Please be sure to view this exhibit in the library, Oct. 26-Nov. 26.

Friends of Murray Library 2018-2019 Library Research Grant – deadline extended

The Friends of Murray Library 2018-2019 Library Research Grant application deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 31. This competitive grant supports Messiah student academic research projects that require resources at off-campus libraries. Proposals are selected for funding by an interdisciplinary panel of judges chaired by Linda Poston, library director. Up to $750 per grantee will be awarded in November for the current academic year. Grant recipient research will culminate with a scholarly paper and presentation to the Messiah community, as well as a poster presentation at the Friends Annual Dinner Meeting. Award recipients will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 7. See the library webpage for more information and attached PDF for application details.

IT equipment sale

ITS will be having a sale of used computer equipment this semester. This sale will be “cash and carry” for employees only. If paying by check, please make it out to Messiah College. Basic specs on equipment are: i5 with at least 4 GB of Ram. iMacs have either a 24” or 27” screen. We have made every attempt to ensure the equipment is working. However, all equipment will be sold as is. No refunds or returns. The desktop and laptop computers available have no operating system and no software. Inclusive Excellence Lecture by Mindy Smith

Please join us for an Inclusive Excellence Lecture presented by Melinda Smith, M.S., senior lecturer in applied health science and director of student wellness, Friday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). “Confidence, Choice and Connection: Moving into Meaningful Lifetime Activity for All” – Our past experiences, attitudes and motivators drive our perspectives on holistic wellness and physical activity. However, stereotypes and unexamined assumptions pose obstacles for meaningful lifetime activity for all. In order to overcome this, Mindy Smith’s research with final-year student-athletes illuminates the importance of exploring each person’s story in the support of personal wellness. As we recognize practical adaptive strategies to progress past cookie-cutter prescriptions, we empower unique individuals to enjoy diverse opportunities that enhance physical and psychological health. This lecture is an outcome of collaboration between the Office of Diversity Affairs and the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science. The Inclusive Excellence Lectures provide Messiah educators and researchers an opportunity to disseminate research that broadens and advances our understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion across disciplinary boundaries. “Manhood and Womanhood Today”  

All members of the college community and the public are invited to this keynote panel presentation co-sponsored by the College Honors Program and the Office of the President at Messiah College on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. It will be a timely, important and informative conversation about men, women and pursuing the common good together. Among the questions to be explored are:

• How has the relationship between men and women changed in recent decades?
• Does too much emphasis on difference threaten equality?
• Should masculinity be weakened or refined?
• What’s the state of feminism and the sexual revolution today?

Our panelists are particularly well-suited to speak to this important topic. Dr. Agnes R. Howard is instructor of Humanities at Christ College, Valparaiso University, a prolific essayist, and the author of a forthcoming book about the experience of pregnancy. Dr. Jeffrey O.G. Ogbar is professor of history and director of the Center for the Study of Popular Music at the University of Connecticut and the author of books on the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Power movement, and Hip-Hop music.

Presidential Lecture Series Promoting the Common Good

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Messiah College will explore how incarnating our mission as a Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences in a rapidly changing and increasingly skeptical cultural context contributes to the common good of church and society – a common good rooted in a Christ-centered commitment to the dignity, welfare and human flourishing of all our neighbors. The Office of the President is sponsoring a lecture series devoted to this exploration. Jan Dormer’s lecture, “Vocation, Cross-Cultural Reconciliation and the Common Good” will take place on Tuesday evening, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Inclusive Excellence Lecture by Mindy Smith

Please join us for an Inclusive Excellence Lecture presented by Melinda Smith. M.S. senior lecturer in applied health science and director of student wellness, Friday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). Confidence, Choice and Connection: Moving into Meaningful Lifetime Activity for All Our past experiences, attitudes, and motivators drive our perspectives on holistic wellness and physical activity. However, stereotypes and unexamined assumptions pose obstacles for meaningful lifetime activity for all. In order to overcome this, Mindy Smith’s research with final-year student-athletes illuminates the importance of exploring each person’s story in the support of personal wellness. As we recognize practical adaptive strategies to progress past cookie-cutter prescriptions, we empower unique individuals to enjoy diverse opportunities that enhance physical and psychological health. This lecture is an outcome of collaboration between the Office of Diversity Affairs and the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science. The Inclusive Excellence Lectures provide Messiah educators and researchers an opportunity to disseminate research that broadens and advances our understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion across disciplinary boundaries. Grandparents Day 2018 – Thank you!

On behalf of the Office of Development, we offer our sincerest gratitude to all the students and employees for warmly welcoming over 500 grandparents to our Messiah College campus last week on Thursday, Oct. 4. We are deeply appreciative for the gracious hospitality show to our grandparent guests by the campus community in spite of challenges brought by such a large number of visitors. Grandparents Day is a great team effort and we are incredibly thankful for our colleagues in Conference Services, Dining Services, College Ministries, Public Safety, Admissions, Oakes Museum staff, Residence Life, the Advancement Division and Messiah Lifeways (shuttle service) for making this 10th annual event such a success. FalconLink is Messiah College’s new portal and is replacing MCSquare as the source for finding information and links to commonly used resources. FalconLink displays “cards” that represent documents, forms and resources commonly used at Messiah. Search for a topic (such as “Registration”) and click on the related card to get where you want to go. Presidential Lecture Series: Promoting the Common Good

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Messiah College will explore how incarnating our mission as a Christian College of the liberal and applied arts and sciences in a rapidly changing and increasingly skeptical cultural context contributes to the common good of church and society – a common good rooted in a Christ-centered commitment to the dignity, welfare and human flourishing of all our neighbors. The Office of the President is sponsoring a lecture series devoted to this exploration. Andy Babyak’s lecture, “Working for the Common Good: Individual Fulfillment and Social Well-being” will take place on Tuesday evening, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. The lecture will be 30 minutes and followed by a Q & A session. Chapel credits will be offered.

Full-day openings at the Early Learning Center

The Early Learning Center is pleased to announce open enrollment for the 2018-19 school year. We have full-day positions available to the Messiah College community and the community at large. We continually strive to use developmentally appropriate goals for young children as well as children’s interests as a framework for planning the educational program. We assess children’s progress in all aspects of the social-emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and physical foundations which is a predictor for later school success. The Early Learning Center utilizes the Project Approach as a key component of its curriculum. This inquiry based approach allows children and teachers to engage in in-depth investigations of a topic or idea worth studying, resulting in the strengthening of academic skills and intellectual dispositions in an authentic manner. Children are viewed as capable, competent, curious and creative members of the classroom community. Organizational structure changes in the Division of Finance and Planning

Recent changes were made to the organizational structure of the Division of Finance and Planning to better leverage the skills and expertise of our employees. The changes became effective on Oct.1. Christine Hartman began her new role as senior accountant – audit and taxation. We appreciate Christine’s leadership over the past four years as director of financial services and controller, and look forward to her using her expertise in the areas of audit and taxation for the College. Kimberly Hawkins transitioned from the position of budget manager to director of budget and accounting. She will provide leadership to the budget, accounting and financial reporting functions of the College. Cathy Poiesz’s role as director of student financial services was expanded to provide leadership to the Falcon Exchange while continuing to provide leadership to Student Financial Services. Also of note for our division, Daisy Anderson was promoted from purchasing manager to director of procurement services last year. She provides leadership to accounts payable, procurement services and the purchasing card program.

“Manhood and Womanhood Today”  

All members of the college community and the public are invited to this keynote panel presentation co-sponsored by the College Honors Program and the Office of the President at Messiah College on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. It will be a timely, important, and informative conversation about men, women, and pursuing the common good together. Among the questions to be explored are:

• How has the relationship between men and women changed in recent decades?
• Does too much emphasis on difference threaten equality?
• Should masculinity be weakened or refined?
• What’s the state of feminism and the sexual revolution today?

Our panelists are particularly well-suited to speak to this important topic. Dr. Agnes R. Howard is instructor of Humanities at Christ College, Valparaiso University, a prolific essayist, and the author of a forthcoming book about the experience of pregnancy. Dr. Jeffrey O.G. Ogbar is professor of History and director of the Center for the Study of Popular Music at the University of Connecticut and the author of books on the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Power movement, and Hip-Hop music.

The Department of Business is pleased to announce that the finance major has been accepted by CFA Institute as part of its University Affiliation Program. This status is only given to schools whose degree programs cover at least 70% of the material that appears on the rigorous Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) exams. Messiah College is the 9th institution in the state of Pennsylvania to achieve this prestigious designation at the undergraduate level. As a CFA affiliated institution, Messiah’s finance program is allotted a certain number of scholarships for students to sit for the CFA exams in their senior year and have access to CFA Institute curriculums, journals, webcasts and other educational resources. 2018 American Democracy Lecture

Join us for the 2018 American Democracy Lecture on Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The Center for Public Humanities and the Department of History are pleased to welcome Dr. Nancy Tomes, distinguished professor of history and winner of the 2016 Bancroft Prize for Distinguished Work in American History. Tomes has also written widely on the history of health and medicine in the United States. Her publications include two award-winning books, “The Gospel of Germs: Men, Women and the Microbe in American Life” and “Remaking the American Patient: How Madison Avenue and Modern Medicine Turned Patients into Consumers.” We do hope you will be able to join us as Nancy discuss the health care experience of the American citizen. A reception and books will be available for author’s signature after the lecture.

Semester-long study abroad information night!

On Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 5-6:30 p.m., there will be information sessions about how students can study abroad for an entire semester. The evening will consist of three, 15-minute presentations (think TED Talk style) from students who have studied abroad at these locations, providing firsthand insight of the good, challenging, awkward and fun that takes place while studying abroad! Student speakers will highlight what the living situations are, their experiences in the classroom, how they navigated public transportation, in-country excursions, the best and worst of foods they tried, and so much more. The hope is for students to hear about multiple programs in just one night by rotating around and self-selecting what programs students want to learn about. In between sessions, we’ll have the opportunity for students to make an advising appointment with one of our Off-Campus Programs staff here on campus to ensure that students are on the right track to make this semester abroad a reality! Please encourage any students you know to come and checkout semester long program options.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed with Keith and Kristyn Getty and violin soloist David Kim at the Sing 2018 Worship Conference in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday, Sept.10. Goranson played bassoon in a chamber orchestra, comprised of faculty and guest faculty of the MasterWorks Festival, along with the Getty worship band. The session, which was recorded for a CD to be released in fall 2018, included a choir of 350 with an audience of over 6,000 singing along. Soloist David Kim is the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and was the spring 2018 commencement speaker at Messiah College.

Bridge to Success survey

The fall 2018 Bridge to Success survey launches on Friday, Sept. 21. This survey informs much of the tasking in the Student Care Community. If you have questions about navigating Student Care Community and your role in these efforts, “drop-in” trainings will be held in the Library Athenaeum. These sessions are intended to address individual questions and do not have a formal presentation component. Pre-registration is not required. Please bring your college-issued laptop to the session.

Randall Zwally, senior lecturer in music, accepted an invitation from the U. S. Ambassador to Guatemala to present a series of concerts and lectures in that country this past August. Venues for some of the concerts included Guatemala’s National Conservatory of Music, the University of San Carlos, and the ambassador’s residence (where Zwally lodged during his time in Central America). We are excited to announce several accomplishments in the Department of Nursing. Megan Gross, Ph.D., MPH, RN, was selected as a 2018-2019 Jonas Scholar for the National League for Nursing (NLN). The NLN Jonas Scholars Program, with funding through a grant from Jonas Philanthropies, addresses a core goal of the NLN: advancement of the science of nursing education. Dr. Gross, who recently completed her Ph.D. studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was nominated by the faculty at IUP for this prestigious award. In July, Kristen Slabaugh, DNP, CRNP, CNE successfully passed the National League for Nursing Certified Nurse Educator examination! She is now recognized as an expert nurse educator by holding this certificate. Additionally in August, Dr. Slabaugh had her DNP Project entitled “Initiation of standardized depression screening in college health: A quality improvement project” accepted for publication. Her article will be published in the Journal of Doctoral Nursing Practice, Volume 11, Number 2, October 2018. Additionally, Kim Fenstermacher, Ph.D., CRNP, recently published two articles, both in MCN: The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing: “Going along with it: Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses’ Views of a Donor Milk Practice Change” with co-authors Alaina Miller and Barbara Buchko of Wellspan Health System; and “Support for Young Black Urban Women after Perinatal Loss” with co-author Dr. Judy Hupcey from Penn State College of Nursing.

The Falcon Fitness Center has two exciting announcements! First, the unlimited group exercise membership is back. Rachel Helen Flowers Centennial Celebration

The Rachel Flowers Centennial Committee would like to extend an invitation to members of our campus community to join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Rachel Helen Flowers (1900-1988), the first African American student to graduate from Messiah in 1918.

Oakwood Hills Project information session

Kelly Phipps, president of Rider Musser Development, LLC, will present a short update and overview of the Oakwood Hills Project, which is currently taking shape directly across the road from the College. Intercultural Office transitions

The Division of Student Affairs would like to inform the campus community of some upcoming transitions in the Intercultural Office. Faith Minnich Kjesbo will be transitioning out of her current role as director of the Intercultural Office at the end of December and will be moving to Sioux Falls, South Dakota with her family to begin a new chapter closer to their extended family. Faith has given excellent leadership to the Intercultural Office and helped establish Messiah College as a leader in off campus programs and risk management. During the spring semester, Kevin Villegas will assume interim leadership of the Intercultural Office, while continuing to give leadership to Student Involvement and Leadership Programs. Katie Rousopoulos and Gina Hale will assume any duties related to cross-cultural courses and study abroad programs. Details about a more permanent structure for the Intercultural Office and Student Involvement and Leadership Programs will be announced in the spring semester. Marcelle Giovannetti, Engle Center counselor, was chosen by the North Atlantic Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NARACES) to receive the 2018 Emerging Leader Award. Marcelle is one of 20 award recipients for professionals in the Northeast, and will be presented with this award at the 2018 NARACES Conference in Burlington, Vermont.

Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of music, served as festival director and principal bassoonist for the 2018 MasterWorks Festival in Spartanburg, South Carolina from June 17-July 15. The Christian performing arts festival for talented high school, college and graduate level students (from 21 states and 7 countries) presented four public concerts of major orchestral repertoire and a total of 30 public music performances over four weeks. Todd has served as president of the Christian Performing Artists’ Fellowship/The MasterWorks Festival since October 2017.

A Farewell to Arms, Sept. 16

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio in collaboration with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) and Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, as well as clarinetist Christopher Grymes, will perform a special concert commemorating the centennial of the conclusion of World War I. The program features the sublime Nocturne by Franz Schubert for piano trio, and Olivier Messiaen’s monumental “Quartet for the End of Time” which will include “To the Eternity,” a touching pas de deux choreographed by Alan Hineline, director of artistic programming at CPYB. The event is Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Parmer Hall, located in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts.

Rachel Helen Flowers Centennial Celebration

The Rachel Flowers Centennial Committee would like to extend an invitation to members of our campus community to join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Rachel Helen Flowers (1900-1988), the first African American student to graduate from Messiah in 1918.

The following events will be held to commemorate the Flowers Centennial:

Oakwood Hills Project information session

Kelly Phipps, president of Rider Musser Development, LLC, will present a short update and overview of the Oakwood Hills Project, which is currently taking shape directly across the road from the College. Kelly will review the project’s aim and purposes, and sketch out the intended use of both the residential and commercial portions of the project. • College Avenue will be one-way until 6 p.m. Sunday from the High Center (creek side) all the way to the stop sign by Smith apartments so that students can unload curbside before parking.

• Students arriving Monday, Sept. 3 can pick up their key from the Residence Life Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Welcome Kathee Clark, associate registrar for undergraduate programs

The Registrar’s Office welcomes the new associate registrar for undergraduate programs, Kathee Clark. Kathee’s first day at Messiah was July 9. She replaces Carrie Widdowson who has moved to the position of Registrar. Kathee comes to Messiah with previous higher education experience as the director of student success, adjunct professor, and academic coordinator for the Worship and Performing Arts Department at Lancaster Bible College. Kathee’s office is located in Old Main Suite 3007.

Graduate assistants at Messiah and partner institutions

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 14 new graduate assistants for the academic year 2018-19 both on the Messiah campus and at partner institutions. New student orientation and Welcome Week begins Aug. 31

The Good Life is this year’s theme for Welcome Week 2018. Messiah College is excited to welcome our incoming first-year and transfer students as they begin their orientation on Friday, Aug. 31. Every employee will receive a handout via campus mail early next week that you can carry with you and use as a reference tool if you will be on campus on Aug. 31. A Farewell to Arms, Sept. 16

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio in collaboration with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) and Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, as well as clarinetist Christopher Grymes, will perform a special concert commemorating the centennial of the conclusion of World War I. The program features the sublime Nocturne by Franz Schubert for piano trio, and Olivier Messiaen’s monumental “Quartet for the End of Time” which will include “To the Eternity,” a touching pas de deux choreographed by Alan Hineline, director of artistic programming at CPYB. The event is Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in Parmer Hall, located in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts.

Employee choir at Community Day

The employee ‘OK Chorale’ will make a return to this year’s Community Day service, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28. We hope to once again share ‘Total Praise’ with the community, and will hold a brief rehearsal the Monday prior to Community Day (time and location TBD). No audition is necessary, and if you love to sing, we’d love to have you join us! Welcoming international and multicultural students

The Intercultural Office will be welcoming incoming new international and multicultural students to campus this year in two overlapping orientations:

• International Student Orientation will begin on Monday, Aug. 27 for incoming international, missionary and third culture students.
• Multicultural Student Orientation will begin on Thursday, Aug. 30 for incoming domestic underrepresented students.

Research and best practice indicate that students thrive when they have a sense of belonging. Recognizing some of the unique challenges our underrepresented and international students face on a majority white campus, these orientations offer the opportunity for these students to begin to build connections with each other and foster a sense of belonging with our broader campus community prior to participating in Welcome Week activities on Friday.
