Matthew Doll art exhibition “Night, Desert, Garden”

Please join us for the opening of Matthew Doll’s exhibition “Night, Desert, Garden” on Friday, Feb. 7 in The Galleries at Messiah College. There will be an Artist’s Talk and reception on Feb. 7 at 4:15 p.m. in the High Foundation Recital Hall, High Center. The exhibition will be located in the Aughinbaugh Art Gallery and The Galleries at Messiah from Feb. 7-March 13. Matthew Doll is a painter and graphic designer, and the program director of the Gordon IN Orvieto semester program, where his Disegno/Drawing course serves as the cornerstone of the curriculum. Messiah College art and design students participate in the Orvieto program each semester.

The Career and Professional Development Center announces the spring semester Pizza with Professionals events

The CPDC is hosting many organizations on campus this spring as part of the popular “Pizza with Professionals” series. During each Pizza with Professional event, the speaker (usually a Messiah alum) will talk to students about their career path, current position, and any job or internship opportunities available within their organization. 2020 Humanities Symposium Keynote Address

The speaker for the 2020 Humanities Symposium will be Anthony Ray Hinton. Mr. Hinton, author of the best-selling book, “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row,” has become an advocate for reform in America’s criminal justice system. Create a Mini Golf Hole

Murray Library’s 4th annual Mini Golf in the Stacks will be held on Feb. 28 and we are looking for some teams to create holes. We would love to see students work together to make a hole that tells us about their major, what they are learning or the future in that field. We would also enjoy having holes from different departments across campus – in past years there have been representatives from Public Safety, Campus Events, the Engle Center, Nursing Department, EYAS, The Loft, Disability Services, Career Development, the Oakes Museum and more! Student/alumni successfully pass CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Dan McGarvey, senior finance major, who along with alumni Brian Gilroy ’19 and Adam Sylvester ’19 successfully passed Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 73,000 candidates sat for the December CFA exam worldwide and the pass rate was only 42%.

We wish Dan, Brian and Adam continued success as they move on to Level II of the exam!

Off-campus programs campus visits

LCC International – Feb. 7: Students get to live and learn from other students from Eastern Europe as they study in Lithuania. Being a larger university, the course offerings include business, theology, communication and psychology.

ISA/Veritas: Wednesday, Feb. 12 – We send students to 6 different locations (Chile, England, S. Korea, S. Africa, France, Spain) ranging in areas of interest for STEM majors, modern languages, dance, business, etc.

Chicago Semester: Monday, Feb. 17 – Located in the heart of the Windy City, students can get hands-on practicum experience while taking classes. They have tracks for social work, communication, art/design, marketing, applied health sciences and more.

LLI Ecuador – March 31: Students experience the Latin American culture up-close and personal as they participate in home stays, participate in an internship or service learning, and take courses regarding faith formation, biological studies, intercultural communications and world religions. MENDELSSOHN PIANO TRIO and CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA YOUTH BALLET “War and Peace II”

Feb. 16, 4 p.m., Parmer Hall This second concert focusing on “War and Peace” commemorates the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II by examining the deep cultural shift that happens as a result of war. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio in collaboration with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) will present the deeply romantic Arensky Piano Trio choreographed by Alan Hineline, followed by the searingly dramatic Shostakovich Piano Quintet, vividly illustrating the changes in human experience brought on by materialism and violence in the 20th century. Residence Life is pleased to welcome Trevor Magness and Curtis Kurtz to the RD team (filling the vacancies of Becky Woodruff and Ambria Eberhard-Brown). Trevor, the new Mountain View and Special Interest House Interim RD, will continue to serve 10 hours a week in the SILP office as part of his RD role (where he served formerly as graduate assistant). Curtis, the new Sollenberger and Mellinger Interim RD (and Messiah alum and former RA), joins us with RD experience from Shippensburg University. Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to process passport applications.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

• Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
• Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
• Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page

Dr. Charlene Lane, assistant professor of social work, was a featured keynote speaker at the annual Everyday Lives conference at Hershey which was hosted by Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Office of Developmental Programs. Topic: The Post Traumatic Growth Perspective: Understanding the culture of individuals with complex needs and their families. Date presented: Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Congratulations to Jenny Dose (business) for the most downloaded scholarly publication from Mosaic in the past month!  The article titled, “The Relationship between Work Values Similarity and Team–Member and Leader–Member Exchange Relationships” (https://mosaic.messiah.edu/bus_ed/18) was downloaded 19 times this month, with a total of 41 uses since being uploaded.  Last month, the website had 3,082 full-text downloads and 146 new submissions overall.  We continue to seek the addition of more educator scholarship to include in Mosaic, Messiah’s Open Scholarship and Intellectual Creativity.  Send your CV or list of publications to mosaic@messiah.edu to get started!

In 2014, as an associate director of admissions at Dickinson, she was a Slate implementation co-captain specializing in external-facing data collection forms, event forms and deliver, although she cross-trained in other areas. Most recently, she served there as the senior data analyst/associate director in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. Bethany’s first day was Jan. 2. Free personal training

Did you (or should you) make a New Year’s Resolution to start exercising regularly? If so, our Applied Health Science Senior Seminar class is offering free personal fitness consulting during the spring semester. Any Messiah employee wanting to get started on a regular program of cardiovascular exercise is eligible. The program will begin the first week of February. Participants must be available for a short weekly meeting with their assigned student, and must be willing to engage in at least four 20-30 minute cardiovascular workouts during the week. These workouts will be individually designed for you, based on your interests, goals, and current fitness level, and can be completed whenever and wherever you choose. This is a fantastic opportunity to begin your journey toward an improved sense of well-being. Student Employee of the Year award

In an effort to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our student employees, the Student Employment Office is pleased to announce Messiah’s first annual Student Employee of the Year Award. If you have an outstanding student working in your department, this is your chance to express your appreciation. Any undergraduate who has been employed a minimum of three months full-time or six months part-time between June 1, 2019 – May 31, 2020 (students who started no later than the beginning of fall semester) may be nominated for the Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) Award. Lactation room available on campus!

A Lactation Room has been created for the use of breastfeeding members and guests of our campus community. This is a comfortable private space intended for breastfeeding and pumping as needed. The Lactation Room is located in Kline 015. This room is located within Kline 017 within the nursing laboratory in the basement of Kline. The room is equipped with seating, a table, electrical outlets, a locking door and curtains for privacy. Upon use, please remember to lock the door, pull the curtains, and flip the door sign to indicate that the room is in use. Delay/closure information and text alerts

If it becomes necessary to delay or cancel classes due to weather on the Grantham campus and at the Winding Hill facility, only those students and employees who have signed up for text alerts will receive a text notice regarding such a delay or closure. A delay or closure notification will also be placed on the home page of the College’s website, as well as being available by calling the emergency information line at 717-691-6084; a recording will provide you with a date and time of the most recent message. Morning announcement are made no later than 6:30 a.m. If in doubt, please check the website or call the information line if you are not signed up for text alerts. State finalists in Innovation Challenge

Five Messiah College Department of Business students (Sarah Blessing, James Chopka, Courtney Hampton, Corinne Mahoney and Noah Thomas) were state finalists in the Innovation Challenge, part of America250PA, a statewide initiative aimed at engaging Pennsylvanians in the commemoration and celebration of our nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. Messiah College’s integrated marketing communication (IMC) plan based on the concept “Keystone Stories” was very well-received at the state finale held in Wilkes-Barre on Nov. 19. Professor of Marketing David Hagenbuch led the team, which also received great support from Bill Althoff, production manager of College Press and Postal Services, and from Professor of Art Christine Forsythe.

Cooking fires at Christmas

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that in 2013-2017 (latest data available), an average of 470 home cooking fires occurred daily in the United States. Annually, these fires resulted in an average of 550 deaths, over 5,000 non-fatal injuries, and $1.2 billion in property damage. Cooktops were involved in 62% of these fires and electric ranges have a higher risk of fires than gas ranges. Unattended cooking was the leading cause. Each year, cooking fires peak at Thanksgiving and Christmas! As you prepare you Christmas dinner this year, don’t let the other festivities distract you from your cooking. Stay in the kitchen when using your stove. Keep combustibles away from your stove top. Keep your oven and stove top clean to prevent spills from catching fire. Be sure to turn off stove burners and ovens when finished.

Residence Life personnel announcement

Becky Woodruff, Mountain View/Special Interest House residence director and assistant director of residence life – upper class experience for the last 5.5 years, has decided to move on at the end of this month. Residence Life is currently in the process of hiring an interim Mountain View residence director through May 2020. Amy Nicols and Caleb Miller have agreed to continue as interim co-assistant directors of upperclass experience through May 2020. Any upperclass experience matters should be directed to Amy and Caleb. We are grateful to Becky for her years of service in Residence Life and wish her the best in this next chapter. Accreditation visit for Graduate Program in Nursing

The post-BSN to DNP/FNP program at Messiah College will be undergoing an on-site evaluation on March 2-4, 2020, by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the purposes of accreditation. CCNE accreditation is a nongovernmental peer review process that operates in accordance with nationally recognized standards established for the practice of accreditation in the United States. Accreditation by CCNE is intended to accomplish at least five general purposes:

• To hold nursing programs accountable to the community of interest – the nursing profession, consumers, employers, institutions of higher education, students and their families, nurse residents – and to one another by ensuring that these programs have mission statements, goals, and outcomes that are appropriate to prepare individuals to fulfill their expected roles.

• To evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals, and outcomes.

• To assess the extent to which a nursing program meets accreditation standards.

• To inform the public of the purposes and values of accreditation and to identify nursing programs that meet accreditation standards.

• To foster continuing improvement in nursing programs and, thereby in professional practice.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as baritone saxophonist with legendary Motown groups, The Temptations and the Four Tops, at the Modell Lyric Theater in Baltimore on Oct. 26. Both the Four Tops and Temptations have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition, Goranson presented a lecture titled, “Fight, Flight, or Freeze: Overcoming Performance Anxiety” at the University of North Dakota. During his guest residency at the University Of North Dakota Department Of Music, funded by an internal UND grant, Dr. Goranson also presented a saxophone master class and presented a solo recital on the Aurora Recital Series on Nov. 18.

Cindy Goforth, director of the Academic English Program, has accepted a position in the non-profit sector teaching English as a second language to immigrants and refugees preparing to work in the medical field. Three HDFS faculty and 12 HDFS students attended the National Council on Family Relations Conference in Fort Worth, TX. Victoria Anders (HDFS ’22) received the Advancing Family Science Section’s Outstanding Undergraduate Student Proposal Award for a poster that she co-presented with Dr. Raeann Hamon and Dr. Erin Boyd-Soisson entitled “Concept Maps in the Family Science Classroom.” Dr. Paul Johns, assistant professor of human development and family science, received the Family Therapy Section’s Best New Professional Poster Award for his poster entitled “How Husbands Experience the Trust of their Wives: A Qualitative Study.” Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, presented with Hannah Fogle (HDFS ’19) as a coauthor, a poster entitled “Circular Migration and its Impact on the Social/Psychological Adjustment of Puerto Rican Families in the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria.” Dr. Reyes is also beginning a new term as a member of the NCFR Board of Directors. College Guitar Ensemble in concert

The Messiah College Guitar Ensemble will present a concert on Saturday, Dec.14 at 1:30 p.m. in the High Foundation Recital Hall under the direction of Randall Zwally. The event will include joyous Christmas music as well as engaging Spanish and Latin American pieces. Student soloists Josh Song and Sam Brown will be featured. Admission is free and open to the public.

Christmas Tree fires

Along with the Christmas season come some unique safety hazards. One of them is the increased fire potential from Christmas lights and decorations. A dry tree can catch fire and burn faster than newspaper. There are many short videos on YouTube of Christmas tree fires. The two things they all have in common: the tree is totally engulfed and the fire has spread to surrounding furnishings in less than one minute AND the trees were dry (not being watered regularly). Please take a minute to view this demonstration. This video also shows why it is essential to practice an evacuation plan with your family. Notice the black smoke which is quickly generated and can make visibility and breathing almost impossible. Just a few minutes can indeed make a difference!

Hiring summer student employees

If your department plans to hire student employees for the summer of 2020, please read the summer hiring information found here prior to proceeding with the summer hiring process or making employment offers. The Summer Student Employment Job Fair will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020. Departments hiring summer student workers are required to attend the job fair unless all summer workers are already actively working for the department or are being rehired from the prior summer. Falcon Exchange check cashing changes

ETF Global Portfolio Challenge

Congratulations to Christian Valen (accounting major) and Matthew Sechrist (economics major) for finishing in the top 15 in the ETF Global Portfolio Challenge. The annual global investment competition spans the fall semester and draws participation from thousands of college students worldwide. Christian’s 21% portfolio return earned a 9th place finish while Matthew’s 17% return placed him in 14th.

State Finalists in Innovation Challenge

Five Messiah College Department of Business students (Sarah Blessing, James Chopka, Courtney Hampton, Corinne Mahoney, and Noah Thomas) were state finalists in the Innovation Challenge, part of America250PA, a statewide initiative aimed at engaging Pennsylvanians in the commemoration and celebration of our nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. Messiah College’s integrated marketing communication (IMC) plan based on the concept “Keystone Stories” was very well-received at the state finale held in Wilkes-Barre on Nov. 19. Professor of marketing David Hagenbuch led the team, which also received great support from Bill Althoff, production manager of College Press and Postal Services, and from professor of art Christine Forsythe.

The Messiah College Nutrition and Dietetics undergraduate DPD program won the School Spirit Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The award recognizes the program with the largest percentage of their enrolled students attending the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (the national conference for dietitians). The prize for winning this award included a private reception with the Academy President and Board of Directors and an invitation to attend the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Gala at the conference on Oct. 28 in Philadelphia.

Jan Dormer has begun a three-year term as a Fulbright reviewer for English Teaching Assistant applications for Indonesia. She participated in this year’s Fulbright review meetings on Nov. 25 in New York City.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as baritone saxophonist with legendary Motown groups, The Temptations and the Four Tops, at the Modell Lyric Theater in Baltimore on Oct. 26. Both the Four Tops and Temptations have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In addition, Goranson presented a lecture titled, “Fight, Flight, or Freeze: Overcoming Performance Anxiety” at the University of North Dakota. During his guest residency at the University Of North Dakota Department Of Music, funded by an internal UND grant, Dr. Goranson also presented a saxophone master class and presented a solo recital on the Aurora Recital Series on Nov. 18.

Nora Sturges: My paintings depict edges of human habitation— outposts in the wilderness of the arctic and overlooked margins of densely populated areas nearer home. The familiar landscapes examine both the practical and unplanned ways we transform our visual environment, while the arctic scenes offer evidence of our attempts to live in, understand and improve our world, set against the unknowable vastness of nature itself.

Farewell Reception

Sherri officially started working at Messiah in 1986 and has held many roles during her tenure, some of which include admissions, financial aid and communications secretary, assistant to the dean of enrollment management, UG systems administrator and ACS supervisor and undergraduate admissions systems coordinator. Her diligence, work ethic, attention to detail, and problem-solving have come through in all these positions. We appreciate the many systems she has implemented and reports she has built during her time with us. Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

The second annual West Shore Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday evening, Nov. 24, at p.m. at the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church (125 E. Main Street). Messiah College’s Peace and Conflict Studies Program is jointly sponsoring the event along with the Mechanicsburg Council of Churches and local Muslim and Jewish communities. Rev. Anthony Eseke, assistant professor of communications, will be one of the speakers and Randy Zwally, senior lecturer in guitar, will be providing music before and during the service. A light meal will follow, and non-perishable food donations for New Hope Ministries will be accepted. Farewell reception for Erin Beck and Cady Sullivan

For everything there is a season and for two of our Development colleagues, the time has come to change seasons. Erin Beck and Cady Sullivan will be leaving Messiah on Nov. 26.

Erin served first as grants coordinator and then grants manager for the past 10 years. In that time, she has distinguished herself as an effective, efficient, and diligent employee. Not only has she led our grants efforts in Development, she has also served as a key liaison to all faculty writing grants, and to the Office of Human Resources on all grant compliance issues. Further, she has led the college-wide effort to ensure (as required by law) that Messiah is a registered charity in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. And she has been a key player in our FAN Golf Outing. It has been a joy to work with Erin and I know you join me in wishing her the best as she becomes senior associate to the president at Millersville University.

Cady is both a graduate and long-term leader of our Phonathon and Digital Philanthropy efforts. She has done an exemplary job with ensuring our Phonathon is run at the highest level. Further, she led our first ever Giving Day, which continues to be a significant fundraising event for us. And Cady was critical to our expanded and greatly enhanced web/online giving presence, which has vastly improved our ability to raise online support. It has been a privilege to work with Cady and we offer best wishes as she starts her new position as director of annual giving at the UPMC/Pinnacle Foundation.

Crafts for sale – Holidays are coming. With the holidays quickly approaching start thinking about gifts for special someone on your list. Do you need a small gift for someone that’s hard to buy for…? Children’s books. My son’s girlfriend is almost finished with college and will become a teacher. She’s looking for gently used books to start a student library.
