This meeting is held mid-summer and provides local college students a chance to present their summer research and receive informal feedback and new ideas regarding their projects. Windows 10 update required

This is for employees that currently have Windows 10 (Windows 10 has a white flag in the bottom left corner.) Because Microsoft is now doing Windows 10 updates every 12 to 18 months, we need to do what they call a Feature 10 Update, which is a lot bigger than a normal Windows update. How do you know if you need this update? After determining that you have Windows 10, you will go to the Start button, then select Settings (little gear icon) > System > About. If the version is NOT 1803, you will need to run this update. We will have this Feature update available in Microsoft Software Center for you to install starting today and going through Aug. 6. On Aug. 7, this Feature Update will install on your machine automatically, if you have not done so already. Once it is done installing, it will ask you to restart, or it may restart your machine automatically. During the installation, you may continue to work on your machine. After restarting, you may have a 15 to 30 minute time period that you will be unable to do any work on your machine. You may see your machine restart multiple times and will know when it is done, when it comes back to the login screen. After you login, it will run through several screens saying it is setting up Windows for you. This may take approximately five minutes. After that is done, you should be good to go. We recommend you do this Feature 10 Update while on campus with a wired network connection. If you are unable complete this update while on campus, you may connect to OpenVPN and run the install that way, but it will take considerably longer to do so. Plan to attend Community Day

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as the presentation of the president’s State of the College address. Refreshments will be available after the gathering from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in front of Climenhaga (rain location is Howe Atrium, Boyer Hall). All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch and the Early Learning Center) will close from 8:45-11:30 a.m. to allow employees to attend the gathering and reception. A Collaboratory team returned on June 9 from Kenya. Two project teams, Rapid Orthotics for CURE Kenya (ROCK) and the Cunningham Clubfoot Brace team, worked with CURE International. ROCK updated 3D printing software, printed a prosthetic, and trained several local orthopedic technicians who will “print” custom prosthetics. The Cunningham Clubfoot Brace team updated the partner on a lower cost material for the brace and potential new manufacturing process. Messiah College Adult ESL Summer Camp 2018

Green chemistry

As part of the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department’s efforts to promote “Green Chemistry” and enhance safety, the department has just upgraded its system for DNA and protein gel analysis to one that uses stain free gels. Biochemists use gels to separate mixtures of protein or DNA fragments and identify them. However, these molecules are colorless and a system of staining and destaining has typically been needed for observing the gels. The upgrades to the “EZ DOC” system will reduce the exposure to hazardous chemicals used in the process. In addition, it will lower the amount of hazardous chemical waste generated by several pounds per year. While that number does not seem very large, the lowered cost of the disposal is estimated to offset the procurement cost of the upgrade in just two to three years. In addition to this, the department continues to “green” its working space by eliminating old and unused chemicals. The department has reduced its chemical stocks by 63% in the past nine years.

Messiah College Adult ESL Summer Camp 2018

The Graduate Program in Education, under the direction of Dr. Jan Dormer, is hosting an Adult ESL Camp July 11-13, at the Messiah College Winding Hill facility. Michael True, senior associate in the Career and Professional Development Center, has been selected as a contributor to the book, “International Internships: Mission, Methods, and Models.” It will be released in June at the Global Internship Conference. The title of his chapter is “Select Trends in Higher Education and Future Ideas.” The chapter covers the current state of higher education, required qualities in students, trends in experiential learning, future ideas and next steps.

It is with pleasure that I announce the following moves and promotions within the Operations Division: Effective August 13, Heather Negley will move to the position of project coordinator, executive assistant for the vice president of operations. Concurrently, Jonathan Bert will be promoted to the director of conference and event services, and effective July 1, Derek Mauldin will be promoted to the sound, lighting and event coordinator as Jonathan’s replacement. Niklas Hellgren, associate professor of physics, and Alex Sredenschek, a junior physics and mathematics major, recently attended the Mid Atlantic Chapter meeting of the American Vacuum Association at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Alex presented a poster (“Co-Sputtered ZnSe Thin Films”) of research he and senior physics major Hallie Miller, have conducted under the supervision of Dr. Hellgren. In a competition comprised entirely of graduate students from research universities like the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and the College of William and Mary, he won an honorable mention and a $50 cash prize. The poster can be viewed on the 3rd floor of Frey Hall.

Concert Choir tours Slovenia and Croatia

The Messiah College Concert Choir, conducted by Linda Tedford, will perform throughout Slovenia and Croatia from May 22 to 30. The choir will tour both countries, performing in various churches. They will also take part in a choral workshop. The Concert Choir has performed in Italy, Austria, Czech Republic and Ireland.

Please join us for a reception in honor of Joanna Barnhouse from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Climenhaga Homestead on Thursday, May 24. Joanna will be departing Messiah College to become the director of development at the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) in Washington, D.C. First as a student and then as an alum and employee, Joanna vibrantly reflected the mission of Messiah in her efforts at engaging a great many donors and friends to invest in the lives of our students. Joy Ellis, admissions event manager, has agreed to serve as the coordinator for student retention for the 2018-19 academic year. Joy has recently been considering a change to part-time status to accommodate some family goals, even as the retention position transitions to the Enrollment Management division as a result of Jim Sotherden’s pending retirement. In this role, Joy will report to John Chopka and work with the retention team, faculty and staff to identify and serve potentially at-risk students. She will start her new role on August 15. We appreciate Joy’s years of service to admissions and look forward to the contributions she will make as she focuses on helping students persist and succeed.

Falcon Exchange student early arrival meal card deadline

Departments bringing students back early for athletic participation, work or volunteer assistance, etc. will need to complete an Early Arrival Card Request Form if you would like to provide meals to your students. The deadline to submit the form is July 15. Questions may be directed to falconexchange@messiah.edu or ext. 7213.

Falcon Exchange summer hours

The Falcon Exchange has implemented summer window hours effective Monday, May 21. Falcon Exchange will be open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These summer hours are in effect through Friday, August 17. Evaluation of Falcon Fitness Center usage

The opening year of the Falcon Fitness Center is coming to a close, and as promised, a team has come together to analyze the usage data and determine if we have the capacity to allow more constituents to have access to the Center. I am excited to report that since August 29, 2017 we’ve had over 118,000 total visits to our fitness center! On a busy day, we see over 1,000 people come through the front door. That is almost half the students who live on campus! Furthermore, the spring semester saw roughly 8,000 more total visits compared to the fall. Our hope is to continue to offer more programming and education to employees and students with the goal of seeing these numbers increase next year.

Given these high usage numbers our leadership team has determined that access to the Falcon Fitness Center will be limited to current undergraduate and graduate students, employees, employee’s spouses, and dependents of employees between the ages of 16-18. It has also been determined that retired employees will be given the opportunity to purchase a yearlong membership. Usage data will continue to be collected and analyzed with the goal of always offering our community the best services possible.

We want to highlight that the indoor track is open to alumni and community members according to the schedule posted on the doors. Over the summer, a predicted low usage time, memberships will be made available to the Falcon Fitness Center.
