Mocktails networking event – Nov. 9

Every year, Eyas, the Student Alumni Council, partners with the Career and Professional Development Center to host an evening of professional development for students. “Dining for Dummies” and “Mocktails” as these events are known, feature networking education for our students, by providing an etiquette dinner followed by a mock-cocktail networking reception. This reception gives students a safe space to directly apply and practice their networking skills with alumni. While the dining component is only open to students, Mocktails is a great opportunity to invite alumni back to campus and celebrate their achievements post-college while allowing them to speak into the lives of current students. Because we realize that many of our alumni have a strong affinity with their professors and/or advisors, we hope that you might be able to help identify and invite alumni to participate in this student-engagement, networking experience. Additionally, we would like to invite you to attend and encourage your current students to sign up for either, or both events. Your presence may break down some barriers for our students and alumni to create a relaxed and positive networking experience for all involved.

If you are interested in attending, please contact Ashley Sider (asider@messiah.edu). If you have alumni in your circle who you feel would be a good fit for this opportunity, please pass along the details below. We appreciate your partnership in helping make connections and making this opportunity beneficial for all students!

  • Who: Messiah College students and alumni
  • What: Mocktails (featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic cocktails)
  • When: Wednesday, Nov. 9, 7- 8:30 p.m. Registration begins at 6:45 p.m. in Jordan Atrium

Important reminder to faculty – 2017 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines set

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2017 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located at on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810

Procedure review:

  1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
  2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
  3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
  4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Diane Hunsinger, administrative assistant to ITS, at ext. 3895. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Upcoming lecture for students on vocation and life after college

WHAT: Special presentation on “Holy Grit: What It Is and Why It’s Important for Life after Messiah”

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Boyer 131

WHO: Dr. Tim Clydesdale, author of “The Purposeful Graduate” and professor of sociology from The College of New Jersey, will be on campus to share important insights gleaned from his research of college students across the country on what it takes to transition well to life after college. Much of Dr. Clydesdale’s enlightening research on emerging adulthood, vocation and resilience has been funded through the Lilly Foundation, an organization to which Messiah has been well connected. Please consider sharing this opportunity with students in your sphere of influence!

WHY: For any and all students who are discerning answers to the following questions:

  • What is different about the graduates of today and how they approach world of work as compared to previous generations?
  • What is the difference between students who fly versus fall after graduation?
  • How can students balance “dreaming big and purposefully” with managing expectations and realistic setbacks?
  • What does “grit” look like, and how is it developed?

Questions? Contact the Career and Professional Development Center!

Medical treatment for injured student and employees

When an employee is injured while working and needs to seek medical treatment, they are required to use a provider on our panel of physicians (attached) in order for Brickstreet (formerly HM Insurance Group), our workers’ compensation provider, to pay for their treatment. Students who are injured while working and need to seek medical treatment pose a unique problem because often times they do not have transportation to a provider on our panel of physicians. In addition, the Engle Health Center is not on our panel and, as such, the student risks the treatment not being covered there. Students should not go to the Engle Center for a work-related injury. WORKNET Occupational Medicine on the Carlisle Pike provides transportation to their facility for treatment. If an injured student employee needs transportation, please contact WORKNET to arrange for the student to be picked up for treatment and then given transportation back to campus. WORKNET is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If a student employee experiences a life-threatening injury, please call an ambulance immediately. Please share this information with others in your area that need to have this information (such as RDs, dining supervisors, campus events supervisors, etc.).

PLEASE NOTE: Any work related injuries (whether medical treatment is needed or not) must be reported within three (3) days via the online incident report which is located in MC Square>EMPLOYEE FORMS>HUMAN RESOURCES>INCIDENT REPORT. It is responsibility of the student employee’s supervisor to ensure this is completed and to provide the attached employee acknowledgement form to the injured employee at the time of the injury to sign and send to Human Resources. If you have questions, please contact Su Deitch at ext. 7085 or sdeitch@messiah.edu.

Open house for occupational therapy

Do you know a current college student or graduate who may be interested in pursuing a career as an occupational therapist? Prospective students will have a chance to tour our state-of-the-art educational facility, meet the program director and speak with our graduate enrollment staff. Light refreshments will be provided.

  • Date: Nov. 2
  • Location: Messiah College, Winding Hill Site
  • Time: 5-6:30 p.m.

In order to reserve a spot, individuals should call 717-691-6002 or email Stephanie Patterson (spatterson@messiah.edu). More information can be found at www.messiah.edu/mot.

October is Hacktober for ITS!

Recap for Hacktober:

  • Malware is a program or application designed to harm your computer. You can get this on your system via email attachments, links to malicious websites or downloading programs from third party websites.
  • Phishing is normally done via an email intended to get you to provide personal and/or confidential information via a URL or by masquerading as a reputable entity. When in doubt, go directly to the company’s website via your web browser. Microsoft doesn’t tell you to change your Messiah password.
  • Passwords for your accounts should be not be attached to your monitor or under the keyboard. They should not contain any part of your user ID or any other personal information. Special characters are great in a password, but be aware, not all special characters work across all systems.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month.

For the month of October, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

Thursday, Oct. 20: 8- 9:30 p.m. (Communication, Media and Public Relations Networking), for alumni and students

Friday, Oct. 28: Noon-1:30 p.m. (Messiah College Young Alumni Networking), for alumni

Monday, Oct. 31: Noon- 1:30 p.m. (Connecting Messiah Alumni in central PA), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. Participants have the chance to share their wisdom, knowledge and life experiences, and to exchange career tips and build their professional network–all online, from any device. To learn more about Brazen or sign up for one of these events, please contact Olivia Snare, GA for alumni engagement at os1156@messiah.edu.

Graduate thesis presentation

The School of Graduate Studies Master of Arts in Higher Education is pleased to invite members of the campus community to hear a thesis presentation from Joanna Barnhouse, who will receive her M.A. in Higher Education this December. Joanna’s graduate thesis presentation is Retention Factors for Early Career Fundraising Officers (see her thesis abstract below). The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 1 from noon -1 pm in the Library Athenaeum. Please feel free to bring your lunch. Dessert and cold drinks will be provided. RSVP to Tina Keul at tkeul@messiah.edu by Oct. 25. “The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing retention for frontline fundraising staff with less than 16 months of experience in their current positions. An exploration of these factors grew from existing research of Penelope Burk regarding the costs of turnover in frontline fundraising positions. In order to explore this issue, the following research questions were posed as part of a qualitative study. (1) What experiences and challenges threaten the retention of early career gift officers?; (2) What experiences encourage gift officers to persevere in their roles?; and (3) What types of institutional support may help gift early career officers overcome challenges? Four fundraisers managing a portfolio of donors were interviewed and transcripts were analyzed. Retention factors were identified and grouped into three overarching themes: office culture, confidence in ability, and external personal factors. Implications for practice include conducting stay interviews as part of annual reviews, incorporating professional development, improving management and recognition and reward for excellent work.”

Oregon Extension faculty member Heidi Gehman will be on campus Monday, Oct. 24 -Wednesday, Oct. 26, to talk to students about opportunities for students to study at the Oregon Extension. Each fall, the Oregon Extension welcomes 20-25 students to a rustic setting in the Cascade Mountains, where serious students can ask their deepest questions, read gripping and challenging books, wrestle with profound ideas in writing, and converse honestly and animatedly with fellow students and six faculty. With 3 or 4 cabin-mates, students buy and cook their own meals. Backpacking, a trip to San Francisco and the Oregon coast, rafting, biking and Bible study opportunities complete the autumn adventure. If you are interested in meeting with Heidi or inviting her to speak to your class, please contact Wendy Lippert wlippert@messiah.edu. Heidi will have an information table in Eisenhower Commons all three days and will be hosting an informational meeting. Please encourage interested students attend:

Invite someone you know to Messiah’s Oct. 29 open house

Do you know a student who’s in the college search process and may be a good fit for Messiah College? Consider inviting them personally to visit the college open house on Saturday, Oct. 29. Students can take a closer look at our 80+ majors, tour campus, enjoy a special lunch in the dining hall and spend time interacting with Messiah students, professors and staff. Students and their family members can register online to attend at www.messiah.edu/openhouse. We invite you to share this link with prospective students and their family members, along with the reasons you love being a part of the Messiah College community! We would love to have them visit and extend them a warm welcome for the day

October is Hacktober – passwords

While there are different schools of thoughts on good passwords, we can tell you some not so great passwords. The following passwords are not good: Messiah2016, Fall2016, 2016Fall, 2016Jterm, MessiahRocks, etc.…We love Messiah, but it really shouldn’t be part of your password. You also should not have part of your username or anything personal, such as your birthday, as your password. Special characters are great in a password, but not all special characters will work across all systems at Messiah. It would be best to limit the special characters to an underscore (_), hashtag(#), or dollar sign($). If you would like to check how long it would take to crack a password, you can use https://howsecureismypassword.net.

Messiah College Business Alumni Networking Breakfast

  • Breakfast topic: Making Networking Work
  • Date: Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016

Business and other professionals need to do networking well, yet they’re rarely taught how to network effectively, nor are they given opportunities to practice their networking skills in earnest. At its upcoming breakfast, the Messiah College Business Alumni association will address these deficiencies and suggest how networking can be a kingdom-building act. Every MCBA event involves networking, but at the November breakfast, networking will be the main course. Mike True, senior associate, talent development and marketing in Messiah College’s Career and Professional Development Center, will open the event by sharing several best practices in networking and inviting guests to add their own. After this networking primer, attendees will have the opportunity to put their networking skills in play through several rounds of “speed networking.” This breakfast promises to be one of the most exciting and interactive MCBA events yet. It will be almost impossible for people to leave without enhancing their networking skills and expanding their networks. We hope you’ll come and network with us!

Event cost: $15

This event is open to EVERYONE! You do not have to be a Messiah alumnus, and attendance at previous events is NOT a prerequisite. Register at http://attend.com/MCBA116

Career Expo – Oct. 26 – Brubaker Auditorium

The 11th Annual Career and Graduate School Expo will take place in Brubaker Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are 129 employers and graduate schools registered to attend. Please stop by to speak with them. Also, please strongly encourage your students to attend this event. This is open to every student – first year through senior – and alumni. Some faculty have indicated they are making attendance a class assignment. The complete employer guidebook for the event is posted on the homepage of www.messiah.edu/career. The guidebook is a fully searchable PDF. Just type Control F to conduct a “Find.” A search box will appear in the upper right of the screen. For example, typing in “counseling” will find every instance of that word. Some organizations have indicated they are looking for students from many majors and major groupings or clusters, while others have been more focused on certain majors. Several of them have listed “All Majors” and “All Major Groups.” Thank you!

October is Hacktober – phishing

Phishing scams are normally fraudulent emails designed to trick the user into responding or clicking a link for the user to provide an ID and password. Spear phishing are attacks which are more pointed and have more detailed information in them, such as your place of employment, a boss’s name, etc. Phishing emails normally contain images that look legitimate like UPS, EBay, Google, Microsoft, etc. They also include links to invalid websites or infected attachments. Please take a minute to watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFa8gvvbELA. We also have several articles regarding phishing in the ITS blog located at http://helpdesk.messiah.edu.

Grandparent’s Day 2016 – THANK YOU!

On behalf of the Office of Development, we offer our sincerest gratitude to all the students and employees for warmly welcoming over 650 grandparents to our Messiah College campus on Thursday, Oct. 6. We are deeply appreciative for the gracious hospitality shown to our grandparent guests by the campus community in spite of challenges brought by such a large number of visitors. Grandparent’s Day is a great team effort and we are thankful for our colleagues in conference services, dining services, college ministries, public safety, Oakes Museum, School of the Arts, residence life, admissions and the advancement division for making this eighth annual event such a success. Also, thank you to our COE colleagues for accommodating some extra “student” visitors in your classroom!

Important reminder to faculty – 2017 J-Term & spring semester work submission deadlines set

October is Hacktober – this week is malware awareness

Malware – Malware is short for malicious software, meant to damage or disrupt your computer system, including a Mac. Normally Windows computers are the targets, but Macs can also get viruses and malware. Malware may be tracking software, it can be a program designed to lock your files, it can affect your hardware, or it may scan your computer for financial information. Email is the easiest way to spread malware. Be aware of any email that asks you to provide a password or change your password. Other email red flags are misspellings, incomplete/invalid return email addresses, just a link to another website, to name a few. You can check your ability to detect malware by going to https://www.opendns.com/phishing-quiz/. We also have several articles regarding malware in the ITS blog located at http://helpdesk.messiah.edu.

Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl

Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to open our 2016-2017 Season with “Eurydice” tonight in Poorman Black Box Theater. On the day of her wedding, Eurydice falls victim to a tragic accident that sends her hurtling into a wonderland of an underworld. Full of poetry, lyrical beauty, and wit, Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice” transforms a traditional myth into a visceral, contemporary meditation on love worth grieving for. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets for any performance can be purchased at the ticket office, by phone at 717-691-6036, online at www.messiah.edu/tickets, or at the door.

The Department of Education’s fall faculty research forum

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Department of Education’s Professor Milton Gaither will discuss his research and summarize recent trends in homeschooling within the United States, which is the subject of the final chapter of his book “Homeschool: An American History,” an updated edition of which is due out in early 2017. Dr. Gaither will explain how the homeschooling movement is growing more diverse in terms of who is doing it, how it’s being done, and why. What has historically been the practice of Christian fundamentalists and back-to-nature romantics is increasingly going mainstream, as homeschoolers develop formal institutions in the private sector and as public schools create online and blended learning opportunities. Dr. Gaither will also discuss some of the recent controversies and scandals in the homeschooling movement and speculate on what the future may hold. Join the Department of Education from 4-5p.m. in Boyer 131 for a lively talk on a timely subject and refreshments with friends and colleagues.

Advise a fall beak service trip

The Agapé Center would like to offer the opportunity for employees to participate in and advise a student service trip over fall break. Fall break service trips will take place Thursday, Oct. 20-Sunday, Oct. 23. Policy for uncovered windows

College Council passed the following policy on Sept. 8, 2016. Based upon expressed concern from our insurance company, the Department of Safety and employees, the College is implementing a policy that requires all employees to avoid covering windows on doors.

Policy: For safety, security and professional liability purposes, all office and workspace door windows must be kept clear, fully accessible and free of any covering. The only offices that may have their door windows covered are the following confidential offices:

  1. Counseling offices in the Counseling Center, located in the Engle Health Center
  2. Health rooms in the Engle Health Center
  3. The College Pastor in the College Ministries Office
  4. The employee meeting space in the Office of Human Resources

Covering a door window may reduce or eliminate an employee’s access to professional liability coverage provided by the College’s insurance policy.

Practice: If the window on the door of the office or area to which you have been assigned is covered, and the covering was not installed nor approved by the College, please fully remove all covering and maintain the area accordingly. Department of Safety and Facility Maintenance staff will periodically check all office door windows. Any violations of this policy will be reported to the Office of Human Resources and Compliance and the window coverings will be removed. If you supervise students, please provide them with guidance on complying with this policy. Questions or concerns should be directed to the director of safety and administrative services (lmaynard@messiah.edu) and/or the vice president for human resources and compliance (acoffey@messiah.edu).

Rationale: Windows on doors have been identified as a safety best practice and prudent course of action for all professionals who meet individually with students. Likewise, in the event of a building evacuation, windows on doors allow the Department of Safety to more quickly assess occupancy. The College has been working steadily to install windows on doors throughout campus. Covering the window obviously negates the safety features of having a window. Our insurance broker has expressed concern that we do not have a policy prohibiting covered door windows and has noted that a significant number of employees do, in fact, cover the windows on their doors. The insurance company has clearly expressed that they reserve the right to limit professional liability coverage for employees who cover door windows. Please see the frequently asked questions here.

Ravi Scott Jain’s lecture “From Wonder to Wisdom” September 2

The picture of contemporary science is dominated by the imaginary of classical physics which envisions a law-governed universe in which passive particles bounce around impacting one another. But this picture of mechanistic atomism has two big problems.

  1. It is and always has been on a crash course with the humanities through its diminution of qualities to secondary status.
  2. Astonishingly modern physics no longer holds to this classical imaginary and so this collision between natural science and the humanities is not a necessary one. Surprisingly, recovering natural science as part of the traditional liberal arts curriculum offers a picture of reality which more easily comports both with contemporary scientific inquiry as well as theology and the humanities.

Ravi Scott Jain will explore how the traditional categories of natural philosophy and the common arts (think technology) better situate our natural scientific endeavors on the arc from wonder to wisdom, may culminate in worship, and do not sacrifice the ability to do work.

Here is his bio: Ravi Jain graduated from Davidson College with a BA and interests in physics, ancient Greek, and international political economy. He worked at various churches, received an M.A. from Reformed Theological Seminary, and later earned a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics from the University of Central Florida. He began teaching calculus and physics at the Geneva Classical Christian School in 2003 where he has developed an integrated double period class called “The Scientific Revolution.” In this class the students read primary sources like Galileo and Newton in order to recapitulate the narrative of discovery while preserving the mathematical and scientific rigor expected of a college level treatment. During his tenure there he coauthored “The Liberal Arts Tradition: A Philosophy of Christian Classical Education.” He has given over 50 talks and workshops throughout the country and overseas on topics related to education, mathematics, and science. He will give the talk and then we will discuss. Pizza will be served. (first come, first served for the pizza.) It is a regular meeting of the philosophy club. No tickets are needed. Anyone is welcome.

PASCD, state affiliate of ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), a leading international nonprofit education leadership association, has selected Jennifer Fisler, director of teacher education and professor of education, for its 2016 class of emerging leaders. The PASCD Emerging Leaders program recognizes and prepares young, promising educators to influence education programs, policy and practice at the state level. This year’s leaders were invited to apply for the competitive program based on self-nominations and recommendations made by past program participants, current PASCD members, and the greater education community. An advisory panel reviewed and selected this year’s class. PASCD emerging leaders have typically been in the profession between five and 15 years, have a marked interest in making a positive contribution to education policy and practice, and have invested in professional growth opportunities aimed at improving student outcomes. Congratulations to Raeann Hamon, professor of family science and gerontology, for being selected to receive the highly competitive 2016 Felix Berardo Mentoring Award from the National Council on Family Relations.
