Dottie Weigel, PhD, assistant professor of Higher Education and program director of the MA in Higher Education: Dottie returns to Messiah College (she previously worked at Messiah 2001-2006 in Residence Life) after spending the last 10 years in various administrative and teaching roles at the University of South Carolina where she earned a PhD in Educational Admin. Most recently she served as the assistant director for Curriculum and Administration (Univ. 101 Programs) and the assistant director for Student Engagement and Service-Learning at USC. This summer she completed co-editing “Transitions: Building a New Community.” The customized textbook for students in the University of South Carolina’s University 101 first-year seminar is widely regarded as an ideal model for institutions working to design a custom-published first-year seminar text.

Michelle Sanford, director of the dietetic internship program/senior lecturer: Michelle is a1993 Messiah alum and holds an MS in Healthcare Administration from New England College. She has been a registered dietitian for over 20 years. She has worked for the last 16 years at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewistown, ME where she has served as a preceptor for graduate students in dietetic internships through the University of Maine as well as several other distance programs. In addition, she has led several medical mission trips to Romania.

Sarah Campbell, PhD, senior lecturer in counseling: After serving as an adjunct in the counseling program, Sarah is joining us for a one-year appointment. Sarah hails from south New Jersey and holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Capella University. Her professional experience includes work as an adoption counselor, consultant, and home study worker with Bethany Christian Services. She has provided individual, couples and family and group counseling for adolescents, children and adults in Philadelphia and south Jersey and she has served as an eLearning expert and course developer at Ocean County College (NJ).

Jennifer Good, PsyD, senior lecturer in counseling: Jenny has served as an adjunct in the counseling program and is joining us for a one-year appointment. She earned a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and has experience in providing therapy to children, youth, college students, families, the chronically mentally ill and residents of skilled nursing facilities. In addition to her work as a licensed clinical psychologist in the Harrisburg region, she completed a postdoctoral internship and residency at Phillhaven Hospital and has served as an adjunct professor in the graduate counseling program at McDaniel College (MD).

Many thanks to Brian Swartz for his two years of service as a fellow in the Teaching and Learning Initiative. Brian helped to launch the initiative and to plan and implement much of the programming that we were able to do in the last two years. His careful thinking, commitment to excellent teaching, and ability to see ideas to completion were significant assets in our initial phases. This year, Brian has decided to focus his attention on his department and school responsibilities. We welcome Cynthia Wells who will serve the final year of Brian’s three-year term as fellow. Cynthia brings a wealth of understanding of teaching and learning in Christian higher education and experience in both undergraduate and graduate level teaching. She joins Amy Ginck, teaching fellow, and Jennifer Fisler, director of teaching and learning.

After three years of strong work and service as the Collaboratory Program Manager, Rodney Green has accepted a position with World Relief and will be leaving employment with Messiah College on Sept. 9. The scope and impact of Collaboratory programming has grown significantly during Rodney’s tenure, and he has managed that growth while keeping Collaboratory leadership focused on its mission and quality. Rodney will be missed. His team is grateful that he will continue to work in the Harrisburg area.

Graduate student Caitlin Copus presented her thesis at Central Penn College on Thursday, Aug. 11. Caitlin is a Master of Arts in Higher Education student with a concentration in Academic Support Services. Her thesis was on course registration. Her abstract was as follows: Course registration is a fundamental but complex process that happens at essentially every college and university. Most colleges have open registration periods when students are encouraged to register for classes, and faculty and administrators examine registration patterns to decide to cancel course sections or open additional course sections to meet student demand. Because the information obtained during registration is useful, it would be helpful to many faculty and administrators if all students registered for classes during the suggested periods. Students who register on time also stand to benefit from the greatest possible selection of course options. Despite these benefits, many students register for classes late. This presentation examined the current body of literature surrounding course registration and then described a quantitative study that was completed to find results about hypotheses describing why students register for classes late. A discussion about the findings of the study followed, and suggestions for current practice and further research concluded the presentation.

RightNow Media provides a range of resources–entertainment, bible study materials, conference keynote addresses, sermons, ministry training, children’s videos, etc. This resource is being offered through a generous gift to the college so that you can enjoy these resources without any cost to you or your family. On June 1, you should have received an introductory email from RightNow Media that would allow you to sign-up for this online resource. They also sent out three reminder emails. Some employees thought it may have been a hoax and others saw this email in their junk folder. It is not; over 1,130 members of the Messiah community have already signed up for this free service. Please note that making these resources available to the Messiah community does not implicitly or explicitly suggest that the College endorses the content or perspectives presented by every resource. School is back in session soon!

Schools will soon be back in session across the state and that means school buses will be on the roads and children will be walking along the streets. Keep these safety tips in mind as you are driving:

• Always follow the speed limits and slow down in school zones and near bus stops.
• Stay alert for children getting on and off buses, and walking to and from bus stops and schools.
• Be familiar with Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law and comply with it:

• Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
• Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped with red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
• Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.
• Do not proceed until all the children have reached a place of safety.
• If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping. This is the only time a motorist does not have to stop for a stopped school bus.

The penalties, if convicted, of violating Pennsylvania´s School Bus Stopping Law include:

• $250 fine
• Five points on your driving record
• 60-day license suspension
• A lifetime of regret if a child is injured!

New student orientation and Welcome Week 2016 begins August 25

Plan to attend Community Day on August 23

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as the presentation of the President’s State of the College address. Refreshments will be available after the gathering from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on the Eisenhower Campus Center lawn (rain location is Howe Atrium, Boyer Hall). All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch and the Early Learning Center) will close from 8:45-11:30 a.m. to allow employees to attend the gathering and reception. Collaboratory bridge work featured in Central Penn Business Journal

Used Bed Frame Give Away. We have more than 100 used bed frames to give away. The frames take the long twin sized mattresses that measure 80 inches long by 36 inches wide by 8 inches high. The bed frames are located in the receiving area under the South Complex – South Side Café Deck. Frames can be picked up between 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring your own help to move the frames, because there will be no staff monitoring the area. Be aware that the bed frames are in pieces. You will need two bed ends and the long frame with springs to make one bed. Also be careful as you walk among the frames to look for trip hazards and possible sharp edges on the metal frames. Used Bed Frame Give Away. We have more than 100 used bed frames to give away. The frames take the long twin sized mattresses that measure 80 inches long by 36 inches wide by 8 inches high. The bed frames are located in the receiving area under the South Complex – South Side Café Deck. Frames can be picked up between 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring your own help to move the frames, because there will be no staff monitoring the area. Be aware that the bed frames are in pieces. You will need two bed ends and the long frame with springs to make one bed. Also be careful as you walk among the frames to look for trip hazards and possible sharp edges on the metal frames. Move-in Day volunteers needed

As announced in early May, this is your last chance to sign-up to volunteer to serve during Move-in Day 2016. The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is in need of employees, related family members (over the age of 13) and student workers to help move new students into their residence halls on Thursday, Aug. 25. You can choose a three-hour shift of 8-11a.m., 10 a.m.-1p.m. or noon-3p.m., or the entire time. You will receive a boxed lunch and free T-shirt. Please know that lifting and walking stairs is required. Library evening hours extended this coming week

This coming week, due to the number of graduate courses being held on campus, Murray Library will be extending its hours on Tuesday and Thursday nights in addition to Monday and Wednesday. Plan to attend Community Day on August 23

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as the presentation of the president’s State of the College address. New Collaboratory Director

The Collaboratory for Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research at Messiah is pleased to inform the Messiah community that Doug Flemmens has accepted the position of Collaboratory director, a 12-month administrative position that begins July 15. Doug has a background in industrial engineering and has worked in management and administration for two local firms in recent years: Graham Packaging and Tyco Electronics. He describes himself as a hands-on contributor with broad experience who prefers to lead from the middle. His professional work includes cross-cultural management in Asia, and he has led a church partnership and short-term missions to Jamaica for several years in ministry to the deaf community. Doug became interested in Messiah College and the Collaboratory as he visited campus with his daughter, who will be an incoming student this fall. School of the Humanities awarded grant for Theology Institute

Messiah College has received a grant of $417,559 to establish the Messiah College Theology Institute for High School Youth project. It is part of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s High School Youth Theology Institutes initiative, which seeks to encourage young people to explore theological traditions, ask questions about the moral dimensions of contemporary issues and examine how their faith calls them to lives of service.  The program will be one of three run out of the School of the Humanities—including the Young Filmmakers Workshop and Young Writers Workshop—that are designed to enrich, deepen, and broaden high school students engagement with the humanities as they prepare to lead productive lives in college and beyond.  Special thanks to Brian Smith, chair of Biblical and Religious Studies, for his leadership and work in developing the grant proposal, and to BRS professors Shelley Skinner, Stephen Gallaher and Richard Crane for their support in envisioning the program. Also, thank you to Erin Beck, grant manager for her work on making this grant a reality.  For more information, see the full press release at http://bit.ly/29mlLrb. — Pete Powers, Dean, School of the Humanities

Enrollment Management area announcements

The following Enrollment Management staff members have received promotions. Congratulations to:

• Rusty Hoffman on his promotion to assistant director of transfer admissions. Rusty spent the last year organizing and leading the HACC check-sheet project, as well as the development of the transcript request form – two new and important initiatives. Transfer students are an important part of the Messiah College community, and we are thankful for his hard work and passion to serve our transfer population.
• Allan Mathew on his promotion to assistant director of admissions for multicultural student recruitment. Allan has provided strong leadership in the recruitment of underrepresented students and in the continued growth of the Martin Scholarship Program. His creation of the MARC (Multicultural Admissions Recruitment Committee) is a model that should positively impact our SURECP enrollment via church recruitment in urban regions. We are grateful for his leadership and commitment to issues of access, mentorship and reconciliation.
• Shayna Reichert on her promotion to coordinator of academic marketing and recruitment. Shayna played a key role in training and ongoing support of our new counselors this past year and is continuing to do that this year. Starting this recruitment cycle, she will be chairing the academic marketing committee, coordinating the writing assessment process and has already assisted the director of admissions with the establishment of territory and academic goals. We are thankful for her leadership in multiple key areas.
• Rachel Shenk on her promotion to assistant director of admissions for telecounseling and recruitment. Rachel has done a tremendous job utilizing the SmartCALL phoning system to coordinate extensive telecounseling efforts which support all territory managers and enhance academic marketing. Rachel co-leads our successful ambassador program and provides excellent training, leadership and mentorship for our student employees and serves as a role model and mentor for effective territory management.

Enrollment Management also welcomes three new admissions counselors

• Elizabeth Arias ’16: She brings a variety of significant leadership, internship and involvement experiences to our office. She served as a multicultural admissions recruitment intern during her senior year and a full-time student staff member during the summer for the admissions office. She was also the refugee and immigrant services for empowerment coordinator in the Agapé Center her senior year, and a senior resident assistant.
• Rachael Haqq ’14: She served as a youth director since October 2012 at the U.S. Army War College Memorial Chapel at the Carlisle Barracks.
• Molly Janczyk ’15: Recently she has been employed as an office manager at a local counseling center. During her time as a student, she was chaplain for the Messiah College Council on Family Relations.

Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability, recently published a chapter titled “Spatial and Economic Sovereignty: Reclaiming Space and Building Community in Philadelphia One Vacant Lot at a Time.” The chapter is part of a two volume book series from Springer titled “Sowing Seeds in the City.” Hoover reviews the work of the Haddington community, a small neighborhood in west Philadelphia, as they reshape their neighborhood through community collaboration, vacant lot reclamation and fresh produce.

Summer workshops on digital proficiency, student engagement and other technology related topics are held Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. in Hoffman’s Innovation Zone. Learn more and register through the Training Channel in MCSquare found at the bottom of the Educator’s tab. Registering through MCSquare allows you to add the workshop to your Outlook calendar with a single click. If you are interested in one of these topics, but are unable to attend the scheduled session, please contact Learning Technology Services at learningtechservices@messiah.edu with a time and date that is convenient to you.

Fifteen passenger van seats

Because of the complexity and the amount of time it takes to remove seats from the newer 15 passenger vans, we will no longer remove seats if requested. If you have any questions please call Brad Markley at ext. 3500.

Summer crimes

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, summer has the highest rate of household property crimes than any other season. Avoid becoming a victim by following some preventive safety tips:

• If you’re going on vacation, don’t spread the word. Avoid posting your plans on social media (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and don’t share vacation pictures until after you return.
• Have someone collect your mail or have it held at the post office until you return. Suspend newspaper deliveries while you’re away. If you expect a package delivery, ask a neighbor or friend to watch for it.
• Set a timer for your lights to turn on and off; this will give the impression someone is home.
• Be sure all doors and window are locked, including garage doors.
• If you will be away for an extended time period, have someone take care of your lawn. Overgrown grass is a sign that owners may be away.
• Give a spare key to a trusted friend and have him/her check on your house while you’re away. Be sure s/he knows how to reach you while you’re on vacation or check in with him/her occasionally.
