Open enrollment for preschool 2016/2017

The Early Learning Center is pleased to announce our open enrollment for 2016/2017. We have both full-day and half-day programs available to the Messiah College community and the community at large. We continually strive to use developmentally appropriate goals for young children as well as children’s interests as a framework for planning the educational program and assessing children’s progress in all aspects of the social-emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical foundations necessary for later school success. The Early Learning Center utilizes the Project Approach as a key component of its curriculum. This inquiry-based approach allows children and teachers to engage in in-depth investigations of a topic or idea worth studying, resulting in the strengthening of academic skills and intellectual dispositions in an authentic manner. Children are viewed as capable, competent, curious and creative members of the classroom community.

Interested parties should contact the administrative assistant at 717-796-5043 or email earlylearningcenter@messiah.edu for further questions or to schedule a tour of the center. You can also visit our website at messiah.edu/elc and complete an online waiting list form.

We loved the character, the layout, the old style gate elevator, the balconies, the city and river views, and the location next to downtown restaurants, cafes, the YMCA, and other activities like a yoga studio, art galleries and river festivals. NEWS

Robin Collins, distinguished professor and chair of the philosophy department in the School of the Humanities has just been awarded a grant for his project, “The Fine-tuning for Scientific Discovery.” The project involves completing the work he has done in the last five years showing that the fundamental parameters of physics – such as the mass of the proton – fall within an extremely small range of values that are optimal for the development of technology and the discovering of the universe. He calls this the “fine-tuning for discoverability.” Such fine-tuning implies that the universe is providentially structured for beings like us to do science and thus has profound philosophical and theological implications. The $217,000 grant is over a three-year period, beginning June 2016. It provides release time to complete a technical book focused on cases of this fine-tuning in particle physics (since this area of physics provides the strongest support for his thesis), several substantial articles on non-particle physics cases, a popular book on the topic, substantial summer stipend support for Messiah College physicist Abaz Kryemadhi to help him with the physics, along with honorarium money for other experts to review the work.

Holiday safety tips

The Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) off the following tips to help prevent holiday home fires:

Christmas tree care

  1. Purchase flame retardant metallic or artificial trees.
  2. If you have a real tree, make sure that it has fresh, green needles that aren’t easily broken.  Keep live trees as moist as possible by giving them plenty of water.
  3. Use a sturdy tree stand designed not to tip over.
  4. Keep trees at least three feet away from heat sources, including fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.
  5. Make sure that any light strings or other decorations for the tree are in good condition and follow manufacturer’s instructions for their use.  Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords.
  6. Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.
  7. Safely dispose of trees as they become dry and needles begin to drop.
  8. Dispose of trees through recycling centers or community pick-up services.  Dried-out trees should not be left in a house or garage, or placed against the house or garage.
  9. This NFPA/UL video demonstrates the flammability of a dry Christmas tree versus a tree that has been watered regularly.

Holiday lights and decorations

  1. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  2. Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear.
  3. Some lights are designed specifically for indoor use and some for outdoor use; be sure you are using them correctly.
  4. Avoid overloading electrical outlets by not linking more than three light strands or a maximum of 50 lights for the screw-in bulbs.
  5. Use decorations that are flame-resistant or flame-retardant.
  6. Place decorations at least three feet away from fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.

Holiday candles

  1. Always extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed.  Do not leave a room before extinguishing candles.
  2. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree.
  3. Keep them at least three feet away from trees and holiday decorations, and other items that can catch fire like clothing, papers and curtains.
  4. Keep them out of the reach of children.

If you are bringing back any students for a college related reason before Tuesday, Jan. 5, you will need to submit their name, date of return and reason for return to housing@messiah.edu.  Requests must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 18.

NEWS

From Kathy Hettinga, professor of art and design

It was a very good year for design awards for Messiah College!

  • Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor, students in the Design as Service course, received a design award for their work titled: “National Parks in the Chesapeake” created for the National Parks Conservation Association. Brianna and Matthew worked as a design team—designing, illustrating and overseeing production of the multiple panel/poster brochure for national organization NPCA.
  • Kathy T. Hettinga received a design award for her work titled “[Im]material, Exhibition Announcement” for the Aughinbaugh Gallery, created for Elizabeth Dubin, gallery director. Photography and artwork for the announcement and poster were created by Brenton Good, Kathy T. Hettinga and the Women’s Studio Workshop.
  • The Messiah College students’ and Professor Hettinga’s designs were selected for the 2015 American Graphic Design Awards out of 9,000 entries! The design work will be published in the 250 page Graphic Design: USA’s Design Annual, and on their popular website and digital annuals for desktop, tablet and smartphone. Students Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor and Professor Hettinga’s design work will be seen alongside design work from Harvard and Yale University, SVA and Parsons, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Adobe, U.S. Olympic Committee and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Editor/publisher Gorden Kaye describes the winning entries as “exceptional.” The 52-year-old competition is presented by Graphic Design USA, the business-to-business magazine for creative professionals. The awards program honors, and encourages recognition of, the power of design to shape commerce, culture and communications.

Personnel changes in graduate programs

As Graduate Programs continues to grow, there are several personnel changes based on new program development, compliance and Messiah’s commitment to excellence. Stephanie Patterson has accepted the position of administrative assistant for occupational therapy, dietetic internship and graduate programs in business and leadership. She will be providing key support to these programs as they intentionally grow to extend the mission of Messiah College, meet the needs of students and seek appropriate accreditation, authorization, etc. Much of her time will be spent preparing the initial application for occupational therapy accreditation in preparation for our first cohort of students who we hope to enroll in the summer of 2017.

As we prepare for the first cohort of DNP students (fall 2016), Ashley Ringquist’s responsibilities have been adjusted to account for this new program. Ashley will now be serving as the administrative assistant to the director of graduate program in nursing and clinical coordinator for the graduate program in nursing. This is an essential role that will ensure that we have quality clinical experiences for our DNP and MSN students and that we are in compliance with various state boards of nursing.

As financial modeling and fiscal management are essential to our graduate programming efforts, we welcome Rebekah Ostby to Messiah College to serve as the graduate programs coordinator. Rebekah is a graduate of Eastern University having earned an undergraduate degree in business management, and she will complete an MBA from Eastern University (August 2016). Most recently, she served as the assistant director of student services/site director of Eastern University, Harrisburg Campus. In her role at Messiah College, she will be responsible for financial modeling, budget preparation, budget monitoring and administrative support projects to support all of our graduate programs.

EMPOWER wellness program beginning in January

One of the most successful wellness programs we’ve offered in the past is back! EMPOWER is an on-site weight management program that enables participants to move forward in meeting personal goals, provides helpful knowledge in the areas of physical activity and nutrition and creates a community of support. Through eight weekly meetings, utilizing interactive engagement with a senior health coach and individual sharing, participants are guided into a lifetime of weight management success. Our goal is to run a program at Messiah on Mondays from noon-1 p.m. beginning Jan. 11 and ending Feb. 29.

At least 15 employees must register for us to be able to offer this program so find a friend and sign up today. If you are not able to attend at least six of the eight sessions, we ask you not to register for the program. Employees can register simply by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu. Deadline for registrations is Dec. 23. It is open to employees and spouses. You do not need to be insured by Capital Blue Cross to participate.

Here’s what Messiah employees who participated in this program in the past had to say about it:

The program is uplifting. Learning you can eat healthy without going to the extreme was encouraging.”

Empower was the most effective program I have ever been involved with, I’m still using what I learned two years later! In terms of exercise and weight management it’s the best investment in time you can make.”

“One of the most beneficial aspects of Empower was that I left the class armed with resources to help me to continue to work toward my health goals.”

“This is more than just a class, it is a life-learning experience. We were empowered not only with the basics of nutrition and exercise, but more importantly we were given the gift of encouragement.”

“I have signed up for the Empower class twice and loved it! It was great motivation to stay on track. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in leading a healthier lifestyle!”

“If you need encouragement on eating healthier, finding time for exercise and just all around feeling better, go to EMPOWER. It is well worth it!”

Still needed: a few good elves

Each year, in the spirit of the season, employees volunteer to help us at the employee Christmas luncheon. This allows our colleagues in dining services and campus events to more fully participate in the event. If you haven’t participated before, or if you’ve had a great time volunteering in the past, we need you this year…and it’s fun!

We are still in need of a few people to help us clean up after the event, particularly to box up donations. The members of the HR team would really appreciate your help! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Victoria Johnson, human resources, at VJohnson@messiah.edu by Monday, Dec. 14.

President’s Report, new Bridge site

Last year, Messiah’s editorial team redesigned The Bridge, the College’s quarterly alumni magazine. As the second phase of this redesign, The Bridge now launches its new website, messiah.edu/the_bridge, in conjunction with its President’s Report issue. The revamped website will make it easier to enjoy the magazine in its entirety online and to share articles with friends.  In this issue, look for the year-in-review timeline, the financial report and profiles of outstanding alums.

Prefer a hard copy of the President’s Report issue of The Bridge? Printed copies are available in the lounges of Eisenhower and Boyer. As always, additional quantities can be found on the third floor of Old Main in the reception area.

As a reader, what do you think of the redesigned magazine and website? Go to messiah.edu/bridgesurvey to take a quick readership survey. Survey participants will be entered to win one of five $50 gift cards to The Campus Store, which can be used on campus or online. The deadline is Jan. 15.

One of David’s Mindful Matters blog posts was recently republished on Quartz, “a digitally native news outlet, born in 2012, for business people in the new global economy.” The article, which examines the ethics and legality of fantasy sports ads, can be read here. Recording daily exercise is a good way to make you accountable for getting in the activity we need each day. So far, 6,197,000 steps have been recorded which equates to 3,106 miles. Remember, any activity can be recorded (the online tracker immediately converts it to an equivalent number of steps so participants can see how close they are to the recommended 10,000 steps/day). Instructions for the easy sign-up can be found at the Messiah Wellness webpage (http://www.messiah.edu/info/20897/wellness). Congratulations to the following participants who won free prizes in the recent drawing: Gina Jablonski, Timothy Knapp, Robin Lauermann, Richard Roberson and Lin Taylor.

In an effort to bring more people to campus, we will mail the brochure to more than 4,000 homes in the community in early January. To ensure your public event (i.e. a concert, recital, play, lecture, conference, performance or any other event at which you would welcome the general public) is included, please send the event, date, time, place, contact name, admission charge (if any) and contact phone number to Karen Garlinger (kgarlinger@messiah.edu) no later than Friday, Nov.20.

The Highlights brochures have been very well received in the past and demand for them has been high, both on and off campus. If you would like to order a quantity for your own department’s use, please call Karen at ext. 7342. There will be a charge of $12 per 100 brochures (12 cents per copy) to cover the additional printing costs.

Free Biometric Screenings

As a part of the PinnacleHealth CARES program, Messiah College has scheduled FREE biometric screenings. While these biometric screenings are provided as part of the Care Connect medical plan, we feel it is important to make them available to all full and part-time employees.

The biometric screening provides an opportunity for early detection of health risks such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.

These screenings have been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17 and Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 6:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in Hostetter 113.

In order for your biometric screening to be accurate, an 8-10 hour fast is required. You may drink water and take any medications you normally take each morning but no other food or drink. Light snacks will be provided after you have your screening.

To make an appointment for your biometric screening, go to

www.pinnaclehealth.org/Messiahbiometrics

Health Risk Assessments

In addition to participating in our biometric screenings, we are asking ALL employees to complete the PinnacleHealth Health Risk Assessment BEFORE Dec. 31. To do this, please visit www.pinnaclehealth.org/CARESHRA, click on the box next to Messiah College, then click “sign up” below the “log in” button. This will prompt you to create a user name and password. An email address and first and last name are required. After logging in, on the right side of the page, you will see “What is your wellness score?” with a banner underneath that says, “Assess your health now!” Click this banner and it will launch the HRA.

Completion of this Health Risk Assessment will assist our Wellness Team in knowing where to focus their educational efforts.

Flu Season

In the U.S., flu season occurs in the winter with outbreaks as early as October and as late as May. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. You do not have to have a fever to have the flu. Young children, elderly, pregnant women and individuals with certain health conditions are extremely susceptible to the flu.

Flu is spread when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk, emitting droplets directly on others or on objects that are then touched by others. People infected with the flu can infect others 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick (and, in some severe cases, even longer).

To prepare for this year’s flu season, the CDC recommends:

  • Getting the yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older. The sooner you get it, the better!
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get the flu, stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone.
  • While sick, limit contact with others.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to prevent the spreading of germs.
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects such as doorknobs, keyboards, phones, children’s toys, bathroom surfaces, etc.

Supervisors are asked to provide release time as able to those non-essential employees who would like to attend.

Rain Date: Thursday, Dec. 3 at 4:45 p.m. in the Eisenhower Campus Center Circle. In case of inclement weather on December 3, the event will be held indoors in the Larsen Student Union.

Safety Contest

Congratulations to Nicole Benner, the winner of the Workplace Safety Committee’s Safety Contest question for October. She will receive a $50 gift card. The question for October was: If there is an active shooter situation, when should you sound the fire alarm as part of the response?

The correct answer for October’s question: NEVER sound the fire alarm in a non-fire emergency situation.

United Way Employee Pledge Drive

The annual Employee Pledge Drive launched this week and will run through Friday, Nov. 13. By donating to The United Way of the Capital Region (UWCR) during the pledge drive, you can help support programs focusing on critical needs such as education intervention. Last year, with the assistance of the UWCR, 513 children under the age of three received early intervention services to help with developmental delays like speech and fine motor skills.

To learn more about this program and others that help individuals and families address education issues, go to https://www.uwcr.org/how-we-help/focus-care-areas/education.

  • Specify the non-profit recipient
  • Select one of four focus areas (Health, Education, Income or Basic Needs)

Or
