NEWS

On Monday June 15, Dwayne Magee, director of Messiah College press and postal services, accepted the 2015 IPMA Innovation Award on behalf of the entire campus. This award honors an organization that has displayed innovation and creativity in using customer facing, technological or process driven changes in order to improve their business model or processes. Messiah receives this honor in recognition for the collaborative and innovative spirit in which all employees approached the implementation of our new campus copier program last year. Without the hard work and support of Learning Technology Services, College Press, and the entire campus community this accomplishment would not have been possible. The award is on display in Bowmansdale Building.

Additionally, College Press graphic designer Rachel Bidelspacher received a bronze In-Print Award in the special projects category for a wedding package she designed for an outside client. This is the first international design award ever received by a College Press graphic designer. Please join us in congratulating Rachel on this exceptional accomplishment.

After 22 years of faithful service to Messiah College, Anne Barnes is retiring at the end of August. Throughout her tenure, Anne has exhibited a strong work ethic and a commitment to professional excellence. She is proficient at working with detailed documents and her efforts to maintain accurate institutional bylaws and board-related documents have greatly benefitted Messiah College. Anne’s commitment to the College has blessed the board of trustees, two presidents and the vice president of advancement. In retirement, Anne and her husband Joe will be involved with volunteer service to Christian organizations and more frequent trips to see their beautiful grandchildren.

I am pleased to announce that Melissa Cohen will be joining the Office of the President on July 6 as the executive assistant to the president/administrative assistant to the board of trustees. Melissa is a 2009 graduate of Messiah College and has been working at Time Warner Cable in Virginia since that time. During Melissa’s time at Messiah, she interned in the Office of Marketing and Communications. Melissa brings a wealth of experience in event planning, communication, branding and administrative skills. Melissa’s office will be located in the president’s former conference room (OM 206).

Laurie Owens will be moving into Anne’s office at the beginning of July. The Office of Human Resources will assume Laurie’s old office (OM 225). Laurie will continue to serve as the greeter for guests of the President’s Office and Kerri Leedy will continue to serve as greeter for Advancement and Development guests.

SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS

June is National Safety Month and the safety topic for week #5 is slips, trips and falls. Did you know that falls are the second-leading cause of unintentional death in homes and communities? Did you realize that the risk of falling, and fall-related problems, rises with age? Read the tips provided by the National Safety Council on preventing slips, trips and falls in your home.

USING CONSUMER FIREWORKS NOT WORTH THE RISK

A Fireworks Safety Message from NFPA: Each July 4, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. In 2012, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 8,700 people for fireworks-related injuries. The risk of injury from fireworks was highest for young people ages 15-24, followed by children under 10.

In 2013, sparklers caused 41% of fireworks injuries. How hot does a sparkler burn? A sparkler can reach 1200 oF; in comparison, water boils at 212oF, a cake bakes at 350oF, wood burns at 575oF and glass melts at 900oF. Do you really want your children playing with fire? Then why give them a sparkler?

Fireworks cause an average of almost 20,000 reported fires per year. On Independence Day in a typical year, far more U.S. fires are reported than on any other day, and fireworks account for two out of five of those fires, more than any other cause of fires.

Be safe this July 4. If you want to see fireworks, go to a public show put on by experts.

PETSMART RECALLS AQUARIUM HEATERS

Top Fin plastic aquarium heaters are being recalled due to a safety hazard: an electrical problem with the aquarium heaters poses a risk of fire or electrical shock. These units were sold from August 2014 through April 2015 for $25 to $40. For a description of the heaters and a list of the model numbers, go to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website. These units may be returned to any PetSmart store for a full refund.

In August, Mike Blount will be joining the Engle Center team full-time. If you have any questions regarding Commencement, please contact Carla Gross, co-chair of the Commencement Committee, at ext. 6940 or cgross@messiah.edu. Thank you to all campus employees who have been planning and working for the past several months to make Commencement a wonderful experience for graduates and their families.

Prior to the Baccalaureate service and reception, traffic personnel will direct guests to designated parking areas on campus. College employees do not receive reserved parking for Baccalaureate. Please note that Baccalaureate is a ticketed event; see the Commencement web site for details. The Department of Safety asks that all guests walk from where traffic control personnel direct you to park. Shuttle service will not be provided Friday evening. To avoid safety hazards, please do not stop in the middle of the roadway to drop off your party. If you have questions regarding parking or drop-off locations for guests with a disability, please contact Parking Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.

SKIN CANCER – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

EHS Today had an excellent article, “Seeing Spots: What You Need to Know about Skin Cancer” by Sandy Smith. The article had a – examples of skin cancer. Although it can be deadly, most skin cancer is treatable, especially if you catch it early. Monthly self-exams can go a long way in identifying skin cancer for early treatment but you need to know what you’re looking for; so while some of these pictures may be unpleasant, take the time to view them to educate yourself on signs of skin cancer.

And because one of the leading causes of skin cancer is UV exposure from the sun, sun lamps, and tanning beds, in many instances skin cancer is preventable. By limiting your exposure through the use of sun screen, clothing and hats, and eliminating the use of man-made sources you can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. With spring here, time spent outside working and playing will increase; take the proper precautions to protect yourself from the threat of skin cancer.

TRADITION MEETS TOMORROW

Tradition meets Tomorrow. As employees, we have a longstanding tradition of investing in both current and future Messiah College students. Because of your generosity, we have many alumni who earned their Messiah College degree. If each employee gives as little as $2.50 per paycheck, we will raise over $50,000 for the Messiah Annual Fund. It’s easy to give through the Payroll Deduction Program. Please return the employee giving response card you received to Beth Clark, Suite 3013. Join your colleagues and support the Messiah Annual Fund. “I give to Messiah College because I see on a daily basis young people who desperately want to earn their Messiah College degree, but need help to afford it. While I cannot give a lot, I know I have been a small part of a wonderful group who works hard to make their dreams come true.”- Jill E. Poole ’81, transfer records specialist, Registrar. Every gift, like every employee, is important. For more information, please contact Beth Trott Clark, director of annual giving, at bclark@messiah.edu or x3953.

NOISE MEASUREMENTS

Under 29 CFR 1910.95, OSHA’s Standard for Occupational Noise, we are required to measure the sound level emissions from noise sources to determine if hearing protection is required (or to prove that it is not needed). If you have any equipment in your area that was added in the past year that produces noise at a significant level* please contact Donna Fink to have a sound level measurement taken. Even if this equipment is similar to equipment already tested for noise in the past, a sound level check must be taken as noise emissions can vary slightly from one machine to another of the same make and model. Measurements must be made “under load” or normal use of the equipment. For example, a power drill may not sound loud when turned on, but when actually drilling into material (under load) it may generate high levels of noise. To contact Donna for these measurements, please call ext. 5038 or email dfink@messiah.edu.

* A significant noise level is one that makes it difficult to hear someone speaking to you at a normal volume (without raising their voice). If in doubt, please contact Donna.

This achievement culminates many years of hard work, two significant self-studies and a site visit during this past fall semester. We are very excited! Please pass the word to any prospective students who might be interested in studying chemistry or biochemistry!

On Wednesday, April 15, Bob Madden of Messiah College Press accepted the 2015 Impression Award for Collaborative Service on behalf of the entire campus. The award is presented each year by the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) for a significant institutional collaboration yielding a positive outcome. Messiah receives this honor in recognition for the collaborative spirit in which all employees approached the implementation of consolidating our campus printer and copier fleets last year during prioritization. Without the hard work and support of Learning Technology Services, College Press, and the entire campus community this accomplishment would not have been possible. Other contenders for the award included California State University in Sacramento, Harper College, University of Nebraska, Yale, and University California Davis. The award will be on display in Hoffman Building lobby until June 30.
