Professor David Foster was recently featured on NPR Radio in Wisconsin for his collaborative work with the Forest County Potawatomi Culture Center on a workshop identifying medical and edible plants. He and student Tyler Jahraus (’24) teamed up with traditional ecological knowledge coordinator Richard Gouge to identify 77 species with native Potawatomi names. Foster hopes to continue his studies with Gouge with the outcome of preserving tribal linguistic and botanical knowledge for generations to come. 2023 Annual American Democracy Lecture

Join the History, Politics, and International Relations Department for the 2023 Annual American Democracy Lecture. Featured speaker Keisha Blain, Ph.D., is professor of Africana studies and history at Brown University. She is a nationally respected scholar, historian, and human rights advocate. A regular columnist for MSNBC, she has written about education, housing discrimination, Juneteenth, and the importance of recent movies, “Till” (2022) and “The Woman King” (2022).

Blain is the author of several books including, “Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom” and “Until I am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer’s Enduring Message to America.” She served as president of the African American Intellectual History Society from 2017 to 2021 and has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including serving as a Guggenheim Fellow (2022) and a Carnegie Fellow (2022).

1 – 2 p.m. Professional Burnout session with Dr. Kim Deutsch
In today’s demanding professional landscape, employees juggle numerous roles and responsibilities, often contending with immense pressure that can lead to stress and potential burnout. Literature suggests that to reduce the risk of professional burnout and promote increased satisfaction with work-life balance, we must first increase awareness on what burnout is and reflect on proactive methods to manage job-related stressors. This session focuses on increasing awareness of burnout, its signs and symptoms, and proactive stress management at both individual and organizational levels. Participants will explore relevant literature, engage in practical activities, and formulate concrete goals and action plans, empowering them to reflect on strategies to build a sustainable career.

2 – 3 p.m. The Power of Partnerships, Dr. Rob Pepper, Executive Director & Assistant to the President for Innovation, Messiah University Participants will be introduced to the “4C’s of Partnerships”: coordination, communication, cooperation, and collaboration. Attention will be paid, and time given to developing an action plan that can be implemented in your specific context.

3:30 – 4 p.m. Tools for Traction A can’t miss session with Steve King about teamwork and collaboration. This session will provide useful tools that will help teams focus on priorities, stay positive, get clear on issues, and gain traction as they work towards goals. Attendees will receive a free copy of the book “Traction” by Gino Wickman.

Seed Library Lunch and Learn

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own an orchard? A pretty easy job, right? Yes, you must prune your trees, and mow occasionally throughout the spring and summer. But between these necessary jobs, there is plenty of down time to relax by the pool and watch the fruit grow. Fall is a bit busier; the apples must be picked. But blessed winter! During those long, cold, and dark months, there is ample time to nap and read books.

If any of this was true, there would be more farmers in the world! Farming is a labor intensive, year-around, relentless profession. Join us on November 8 to discover what it takes to run Mt. Airy Orchards, located just minutes from the Messiah Campus. Mt. Airy grows and sells multiple varieties of berries, peaches, plums, and apples. They also successfully operate a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA), an Agritourism business including summer programs for children, a play area with a fall corn maze, pick your own fruit, homemade baked goods, a retail store, ice cream and homemade meals, local artisan’s talents, and the list continues! We will walk through a typical year and the challenges each season offers. As a bonus, Mt. Airy grows over 20 different varieties of apples, several of which will be available for sampling! New admissions counselors

The Office of Admissions is excited to welcome two new staff members to our team.

John Truitt ’21, admissions counselor/coordinator of youth ministry and parachurch organizations: John is a 2021 Messiah University graduate with a degree in early childhood education. He is currently in progress of earning his MBA in organizational management from Eastern University.

During his time at Messiah, John spent three years working as a student in the undergraduate admissions office that included time both as an office worker and as a telecounselor. Most recently, he served the last two years at Eastern University as a senior admissions counselor and is thrilled to bring those skills back to his alma mater.

Tania Tirado Colon, admissions counselor for Latino student recruitment: Tania comes to us as a native of Puerto Rico who moved her family to Pennsylvania in 2020. She holds a B.A. music education and an M.A. educational leadership. Her wealth of experience as an educator and life-coach, as well as a passion for serving the Latino community, make her a perfect fit for our team.

Note to Faculty: Please Read
If you are using the Campus Store vendor’s textbook subscription service, Slingshot Choice, the due dates for faculty submissions of copyright and non-copyrighted material are as follows. With enrollment in this service, the Campus Store aims to deliver a student’s required course materials, including course packets and lab manuals, to the students a week before the semester starts.
As a result, the Campus Store needs these materials to be received into their inventory sooner than in the past.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

We’re talking about phishing over at the Cybersecurity Education program blog this week. Phishing occurs when a criminal poses as a trustworthy organization or person and tries to trick you into clicking a link or opening an attachment. They do this in order to steal your personal information or infect your device.

Devin Manzullo-Thomas, assistant professor of American religious history, director of archives, and director of first-year courses, recently delivered two invited lectures on his book, Exhibiting Evangelicalism: Commemoration and Religion’s Presence of the Past (University of Massachusetts Press, 2022), one at Wheaton College (Sept. 21) and the other at Grace College (Sept. 23). In addition, he recently spoke in two graduate seminars in which students had read his book, one at the University of North Alabama and the other at Salem State University.

Professor of marketing David Hagenbuch recently served as a panelist for a national webinar hosted by the American Marketing Association (AMA) on the topic “Integrity in Action: Exploring Marketing Ethics.” AMA CEO Bennie Johnson moderated discussion for the panel, which also included Margot Bloomstein, brand and content strategy consultant at Appropriate, Inc., Pat Ratulangi, vice president global communications, diversity and inclusion/social responsibility at Nielsen, and Young Mi Park, lecturer at Columbia University and senior vice president at Starnex Co. Ltd.

Beth Transue (’93), information literacy librarian, presented a poster titled “Collaborating with a Campus Writing Committee to Create an Information Literacy Wheel” at the 2023 Annual PA Library Association Conference. The poster explained the process to adapt the Essay Wheel with information literacy learning objectives. It also displayed both wheels so attendees could see how our campus helps students visualize writing and information literacy concepts.

Next week, Ted Davis, professor emeritus of the history of science, will deliver an invited talk, “Science and Religion, Chicago Style: The Protestant Modernist Encounter with Science,” at the Presbyterian Scholars’ Conference at Wheaton College. He will also do a public lecture at Wheaton, “Why Christianity is Good for Science.” In November, Ted will visit Baylor University for three days, visiting classes, doing a colloquium on science capstone courses, and giving a public talk, “Robert Boyle, the Bible, and Natural Philosophy.”

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Joanna Behm, EdD, MS, OTR/L, COMT, CDP, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with alumna Amelia Phung ’23, presented their poster titled, “Experiences of Occupational Therapy Students with Disabilities” at the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference in Pittsburgh on Sept. 29. This study explored the experiences of 86 students with disabilities in OT school regarding accommodations. Joanna Behm, along with alumni Megan Hamilton ’21 and ’23 and Madeleine Skolka ’20 and ’23, also presented their poster titled, “Perceived Social and Leisure Engagement Among Individuals with POTS.” Individuals with energy-limiting conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) experience diminished ability to participate in all areas of occupation. This study examined the leisure and social engagement of those with POTS. Results indicate low satisfaction in these valued occupations.

Kimberly Duetsch, OTD, OTR/L, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with alumni Amanda Weikert ’23 and Madeline Senft ’23, presented their poster titled, “Student Perspectives on Coping Strategies and Burnout Education” at the same POTA conference in Pittsburgh. A survey of healthcare students revealed that students had varied experiences in how their healthcare programs address burnout and stress. Qualitative analysis revealed that students desire implementation of burnout prevention and stress management strategies into the curriculum.

Jim Foster, OTD, MS, OTR/L, CBIS, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with Mary Zadnik, presented their poster titled, “Addressing Occupational Dysfunction through Telehealth: A Scoping Review” at the POTA annual conference Sept. 29. Their poster identified the groups and populations where telehealth was utilized to address occupational dysfunction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scott Weaver is retiring from Messiah University on Oct. 13. Scott began his journey at Messiah as a student, graduating with a degree in computer science. In 2002, Scott started teaching as an instructor of computer science. During his years at Messiah, Scott mentored, led, taught, developed, collaborated and served on many critical projects and programs. Scott developed and maintained the Symposium Project Registration and Management System (SymPRM). Scott led the Messiah programming team for many years, including the team that went to the 2015 ACM-ICPC World Finals in Morocco. In the past decade, Scott developed both the cybersecurity program and computer science with teaching program. Scott co-led students on cross-cultural trips to Costa Rica. Scott also has been very intentional about involvement in mission work in various countries through both his church and Messiah University.

Please join the Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics in congratulating Scott on his well-deserved retirement, and stop by the CMP Department Homecoming Reunion in the Cyber Center on Saturday between 1 – 2:30 p.m. to say “thank you” and wish Scott well in his retirement. While “Who Will Carry the Word?” is based on existence in concentration camps, it also portrays how in times of despair, mankind comes together—bonded by strength and courage—to find hope and the will to escape a dire fate.

Kim Fenstermacher, assistant dean of nursing delivered the opening keynote address for the UPMC Nursing Research and Evidence-based Practice Conference on September 15 in Harrisburg. Her presentation, titled “Empowering Nurses with Evidence to Learn from the Past and Lead for the Future” urged nurses to think creatively about how to solve the nursing workforce shortages that are impacting nursing practice and nursing education.

Lin Taylor is retiring from Messiah University at the end of September. Lin has played many parts in her 18 years at Messiah University: professor, employee and friend. Beginning in 2005, she taught math and computer sciences as an adjunct professor. Beginning in 2013, Lin joined ITS as a full-time programmer/analyst. In 2021, her hard work was recognized when she received the Pride in Performance award. Lin has served on various committees on campus and volunteers with Girls Who Code.

The Bridge Center for Continuing Education at Messiah University in partnership with the Southcentral Long-Term Care-RISE Team at Penn State Health is coordinating training for entry and mid-level Long-Term Care Leaders. The training focuses on Leading Spirituality and Wellness in Long-Term Care and consists of 8 online non-credit bearing educational courses. Each course will focus on a unique aspect of spirituality and will encourage Long-term care leaders in their personal journeys as well as provide tools to support their co-workers and team members. Courses can be completed as standalone events, or participants can earn a Certificate of Completion if they complete the 4 Core Courses and 2 Elective Courses. ABSTRACT
Home care is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, projected to continue increasing as the population ages. However, there are unique safety concerns associated with home care compared to the more controlled hospital or clinic settings, such as driving distractions, potentially dangerous neighborhoods, and in-home risks categorized as environmental, biological, chemical, and emotional. Each home is essentially a new worksite with its own set of safety hazards, increasing the need for home care providers to be aware of safety risks in these ever-changing environments. Ensuring worker safety is essential to the recruitment and retention of home care workers. This article discusses safety risks unique to home care and offers solutions that increase the safety of home care providers. Education around workplace violence, implementation of evidence-based practices, and establishing and adhering to safety policies are paramount.

After many years of service and significant departmental leadership, Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, stepped down as chair of the Department of Human Development and Family Science after thirty-one years, and Paul Johns has stepped into this role over the summer. Under Raeann’s leadership, the department educated thousands of students from numerous majors with excellent pedagogy; the program achieved affiliation with the National Council on Family Relations; and Raeann developed a variety of opportunities for high quality undergraduate student research, among many other achievements. Hamon will continue to share her many gifts as she returns to the classroom full-time. As a respected educator, family therapist and institutional citizen with two decades of service to Messiah, Paul is well poised to take the helm of this undergraduate department. Please join the interim dean of the School of Arts, Culture, and Society in thanking Raeann and welcoming Paul.

I’m writing to inform the University community that Linda Poston, director of Murray Library, will retire from that role effective Nov. 30.

Linda assumed the library directorship at Messiah University in 2018, after twenty-two years of leading the library at Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary. Along with her experience at a sister institution, Linda brought wisdom, grace, and creativity to her role at Messiah, guiding the library’s strategic planning at a time when the role of academic libraries was undergoing considerable change. Linda has been a strong advocate for the library and its role on campus; but more than that, she’s been a campus-wide leader and partner, serving on the Middle States re-accreditation steering team, championing the use of open educational resources, and supporting educators and students who rely on the library’s services to deliver and receive a quality education.

Linda’s retirement will allow her more time to spend with her husband, Larry, who taught in our Department of Biblical, Religious, and Philosophical Studies (and before that, at Nyack College), until his recent diagnosis with pulmonary fibrosis. Both Linda and Larry would appreciate your prayers as they navigate the road ahead.

More information will be forthcoming from the provost’s office about a time to celebrate Linda’s leadership at Messiah University.

Paula Johnson, PT, DPT, MBA, director of clinical education and assistant professor of physical therapy, has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Minority Faculty Development Scholarship Award. Nominees must be pursuing their post-professional doctorate and further the profession of physical therapy through teaching and research. They must also be committed to advancing, contributing to, and impacting minority affairs, while maintaining academic excellence and dedicated service to the profession and association. Paula was able to stand out among many exceptional nominations and will use this award to fund her dissertation research as she completes her doctorate in education.

Curator Club at the Oakes Museum

Registration is open for our fall 2023 Curator Club and CC2 programming!

Curator Club (for grades 3-5) and CC2 (6-8th) are science enrichment programs on a variety of topics in a fun learning environment at The Oakes Museum of Natural History. Curators Club members receive a membership card for free admission to The Oakes Museum of Natural History, a certificate for three free children’s admissions, and a t-shirt.

CultureCONNECT, 2023 Annual Lecture

Please plan to attend the Department of Communication’s CultureCONNECT 2023 lecture on Sept. 13, in Parmer Cinema, at 7 p.m., with Katie R. Place, professor and strategic communication expert at Quinnipiac University. Place’s lecture on “Ethical Listening for Communications, Business, and Beyond” looks at how listening in public communication contexts has historically engaged in an 80:20 ratio of speaking versus listening, where listening has been done to promote marketing needs, provide competitive data, or identify methods to sell products. Research and practice must better identify values that promote the ethical pursuit of listening to establish healthy, equitable dialogue and more ethical representation of social equity and morale among organizational publics. Place will discuss her recent research findings on ethical listening and ethical management of the organizational listening process. A reception in Howe Atrium will immediately follow the lecture.

Phoenix Physical Therapy at Messiah University, located at Messiah’s Winding Hill facility at 401 East Winding Hill Road, is accepting new patients! Phoenix PT is an interprofessional outpatient clinic that provides comprehensive physical therapy, occupational therapy—including pediatric OT services—and athletic training services to a diverse population of patients in the local community. Phoenix’s personnel works together with Messiah educators to train and develop the next generation of licensed physical and occupational therapists and certified athletic trainers and brings high-quality, intergenerational PT, OT and AT care to the Mechanicsburg area.
