Degree Works update coming this semester!

The Office of the Registrar and Information Technology Services are excited to announce that changes are coming to the Degree Works degree audits. The new look, called “Responsive Dashboard”, provides a device-adaptable and mobile-friendly student dashboard with a fresh, clean look that is ADA compliant for accessibility. Access to the current version of Degree Works (Classic Dashboard) will continue through the spring 2023 semester. The Center for Public Humanities host the 2023 Humanities Symposium

The 2023 Humanities Symposium will be held Feb. 20-24. To view the week’s sessions, you can visit messiah.edu/cphsymposium. The keynote address will be held on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The speaker will be T. The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the eldest, never left Hazlehurst — she is the caretaker of the sisters’ cantankerous Old Granddaddy. Meg, the middle sister, left home to pursue stardom as a singer in Los Angeles, but has, so far, only found happiness at the bottom of a bottle. And Babe, the youngest, has just been arrested for shooting her abusive husband, Zackery Botrelle. Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail. Under the scorching heat of the Mississippi sun, past resentments bubble to the surface and each sister must come to terms with the consequences of her own “crimes of the heart.”

Employee parking reminders from the Department of Safety

All employees must register their vehicle(s) with The Department of Safety and park in their assigned lot. Employees should have a current blue parking permit hangtag.

To register for a permit or to update your vehicle(s) go to Falcon Link and click on Falcon Park for options.

Employees are to park in their respective assigned lot location, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., while classes are in session.

Please take time to review the University “campus parking map” and the “employee traffic code” at the Department of Safety website by clicking the quick link “vehicle parking information”. You are responsible for abiding by the parking and traffic regulations.

When on Messiah University property, your permit must be visible from the outside of the vehicle. Please place your assigned parking permit hangtag on your rear-view mirror while parked for maximum visibility and to avoid receipt of a citation.

Messiah University vehicle reservation reminders

When using a fleet vehicle, you are responsible for filling the gas tank before returning the vehicle, if the tank is less than ¾ full, and for removing all trash and personal belongings from the vehicle upon your return to campus.

• Each vehicle is equipped with an EZ-Pass transponder. On the green vehicle receipt card (which you receive in the key bag), please be sure to indicate whether or not the EZ-Pass transponder is in the vehicle. This question is at the top of the green card, and you will check YES or NO. (We use this to track any missing transponders).

• The approved driver list is updated weekly, and can be found on FalconLink. Please be sure to check the list for potential drivers prior to making a vehicle reservation.

• Students expire one year from the approval date; employees expire two years from the approval date. You will see the “approved” date on the approved driver list.

• Documentation needed to renew or become an approved driver:

o Application for approved driver status
o Motor vehicle request form (MVR Form)
o Safe driving program training
o Copy of proof of auto insurance (if you are on a parent’s policy, you need to provide a copy of the declaration page, listing you as an insured driver).

• Submit all necessary documents to: University receptionist – Debbie Farver at dfarver@messiah.edu or drop them off at the receptionist desk – ECC lobby. (Please allow 2 weeks of processing time to renew your driver status or to become an approved driver).

• MVR forms are sent to the University’s insurance broker, who determines a “pass” or “fail” designation based on the matrix provided in University the Fleet Policy. (The MVR falls under the umbrella of the fair credit reporting act, but a credit report is NOT run when processing an MVR form).

• Van tests for 15-passenger vans can be scheduled AFTER you receive your approved driver status. (Once you are van approved, you do NOT have to re-take the test when you renew your driver status).

• Vehicle reservations should be requested through EMS. You will provide the necessary information, and select the number of vehicles and types of vehicles needed for your reservation, according to those which are available. The University receptionist (or someone in her absence) will review the vehicle request and complete the final confirmation within 24-hours of the request.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Paula Johnson, Director of Clinical Education in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, has been appointed as the chair of ACAPT’s National Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Commission Task Force (NEDIC) on Physical Therapy Education and Career Advancement Pathways.

As a nationally recognized expert, Paula attended the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) invitation only summit in June of 2022. Data from that summit was analyzed and themes were developed for further action. The task force that Paula chairs will be working over the next 18 months to utilize information from the NEDIC summit and collect and analyze additional data related to pathways to DPT program admission and post-professional leadership roles. The task force will then propose policies, guidelines, best practices, standards and/or resources for adoption and implementation within academic physical therapy.

The following students from the theatre and dance program were invited to participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival earlier this month. Emma Hehn, a senior BFA musical theatre major performed in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition. She performed monologues form Brighton Beach Memoirs, Where You Can’t Follow and a scene from Silent Sky. Out of around 200 participants, she was selected as one of the finalists for the competition. Elizabeth Volpe, a senior BFA musical theatre major performed in the Musical Theatre Initiative Competition. She sang cuts from “I’m Your Man” from Meet John Doe and “Everybody Loves Louis” from Sunday in the Park with George and was selected as a finalist for the competition. Elisaveta Alekumova, a senior B.A. theatre major was one of only six students invited to participate in the Stage Directors and Choreographers Program at the festival. For her work directing the play, “The Arithmetic of Memory” she was selected as the regional runner up for the SDC program. If you see these students, please congratulate them on their artistic/scholarly achievements and for representing Messiah with distinction.

The Agapé Center for Local and Global Engagement is currently looking for advisors for our Domestic Spring Break service trips who might be willing to serve alongside students as they engage with diverse communities.

Spring Break service trips will take place March 4-11. All costs are covered for trip advisors. Because we seek to make our service trips an opportunity for student leaders to grow and develop skills in leading, reflection and facilitation, the trip advisor simply serves as a resource and encouragement for student leaders and assists in any problem-solving that may arise.

Nathan Bos will speak on “Chat-GPT: where it came from, what it does, and how to realize its potential for the liberal arts” on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema. Bos is most suited to address this timely matter as a result of his wide-ranging AI-related research over the past 25 years at MITRE’s Innovation Center for Data and Human-Centered Solutions, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics laboratory, and the University of Michigan’s School of Information. Upcoming Passport Service Day 1/31

The Agape Center for Local & Global Engagement is hosting another Passport Service Day on campus at the end of January!

Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to process passport applications. PLEASE NOTE: the current time for processing passports is 6-8weeks.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:
• Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
• Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
• Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page
• Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID
• Completed application
• Fees ($130 check or money order written to the U.S. Department of State and $35 cash or check written to the Prothonotary’s Office)

Open house for new physical therapy clinic at Winding Hill

This fall Messiah University and Phoenix Physical Therapy announced a partnership that brought an inter-professional outpatient clinic to Messiah’s Winding Hill, the same facility that hosts Messiah’s accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy programs.

You are invited to an Open House on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 8 -10 a.m. to tour the new facility at Winding Hill and enjoy refreshments as we publicly open this new clinic. Feel free to invite a friend or colleague along to this event who you think may have interest in learning more and touring this space. In order to assist students with obtaining summer on-campus employment, the Student Employment Office will be holding a summer job fair on campus on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.in Eisenhower Commons. Todd Goranson, professor of music, presented an invited lecture titled
“Mental and Musculoskeletal Health for the Saxophonist: Performance Anxiety and Injury Prevention” at the 43rd annual US Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium on January 14. The lecture provided an evidence-based approach to the understanding and prevention of anxiety symptoms during performance, as well as prevention of injuries that are common to woodwind instrumentalists. This year’s International Saxophone Symposium was hosted by the George Mason University Center for the Arts.

Nathan Bos will speak on “Chat-GPT: where it came from, what it does, and how to realize its potential for the liberal arts” on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema. Upcoming Passport Service Day 1/31

The Agape Center for Local & Global Engagement is hosting another Passport Service Day on campus at the end of January!

Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to process passport applications. PLEASE NOTE: the current time for processing passports is 6-8weeks.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:
• Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
• Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
• Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page
• Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID
• Completed application
• Fees ($130 check or money order written to the U.S. Department of State and $35 cash or check written to the Prothonotary’s Office)

Open house for new physical therapy clinic at Winding Hill

This fall Messiah University and Phoenix Physical Therapy announced a partnership that brought an inter-professional outpatient clinic to Messiah’s Winding Hill, the same facility that hosts Messiah’s accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy programs.

You are invited to an Open House on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 8 -10 a.m. to tour the new facility at Winding Hill and enjoy refreshments as we publicly open this new clinic. Feel free to invite a friend or colleague along to this event who you think may have interest in learning more and touring this space. Hiring summer student employees

In order to assist students with obtaining summer on-campus employment, the Student Employment Office will be holding a summer job fair on campus on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.in Eisenhower Commons. Departments hiring summer student workers should plan to have a representative available at the Job Fair unless all summer workers are already actively working for the department during the academic year or are being rehired from the prior summer.

Ted Davis, professor emeritus of the history of science, recently led two sessions on “history and science and religion” for the Oxford/CCCU faculty development project, “Supporting Structures: Innovative Collaborations to Enhance STEM Research at CCCU Member Institutions.” He will also take part in events related to the opening of the exhibit, “Scripture and Science: Our Universe, Ourselves, Our Place,” including a session for journalists, at the Museum of the Bible on January 19. In that connection, he will lead a tour of the exhibit when the University Honors Program visits on January 21.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Messiah recently announced its partnership with Phoenix PT, collaborating on the opening of an outpatient clinic located at the University’s Winding Hill location. Messiah is pleased to announce that the new clinic has opened on schedule and is now accepting new patients!

The clinic, named Phoenix PT, OT, AT at Messiah University Winding Hill, provides comprehensive physical therapy, occupational therapy and athletic training services to the local community. Phoenix offers a wide range of services including helping patients to recuperate from an injury, prehab before surgery or recover from a recent illness. Located in the same facility as Messiah’s accredited DPT and MOT programs, the clinic also provides Messiah students with opportunities for observation and hands-on training.

The clinic’s director is Kelly Thomas Clancy, PT, DPT, an ‘06 Messiah alum and a former Messiah soccer player who was part of the University’s 2005 national championship team. Kelly brings more than 13 years of experience caring for patients in various settings. Her clinical expertise includes manual therapy for the treatment of conditions related to general orthopedic and sports injuries, as well as Kinesio Taping, vestibular rehabilitation, and workers’ compensation injuries.

Getting a new phone? Maintain access to your Messiah account by setting up a secondary MFA method!

The preferred method for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is the use of the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone. This is the most secure and easiest to use option for securing your Messiah University account.

However, the Microsoft Authenticator app will not transfer your Messiah account between your old and new phone. It is highly recommended that you set up at least one additional method for MFA as a back-up such as a text message or a call to your personal cell phone. This will allow you to sign into your Messiah account and reset Microsoft Authenticator to use on your new phone!

“Peace Carol,” a composition by adjunct music professor John Devorick received its premiere at a recent concert of the Eagle Singers, a select choir from Eagle View Middle School, under the direction of Messiah alum Dru Deitch (née Kepner). Another composition by Professor Devorick, “Litanies,” will be published by GIA Publications in 2023.

Josiah Hatfield (beloved RD here at Messiah for the past 10.5 years), has accepted a position as assistant director of New Student and Family Programs at Butler University, which begins in early January. Josiah has been an incredible servant leader here at Messiah and his presence and ongoing contributions will certainly be missed! Josiah’s last day will be Dec. 22.

Additionally, Vic Canavra (former apartment RD of Fry and Smith) moved on to other job opportunities in mid-November and we are delighted that Jaz Velazquez joined the RD team on Dec. 1. Jaz served as a 2-year RA in Solly and Witmer. Her undergrad degree was HDFS and she will be in this apartment RD role while pursuing her master’s in Higher Education here at Messiah. Welcome, Jaz!

On Dec. 9, Brenda Elliott, assistant professor in nursing, co-presented a webinar titled “Integrating Veteran-specific Content into RN-BSN Courses” to members of the National RN-Baccalaureate Faculty Forum (NRFF). The NRFF is a national organization that supports faculty teaching in RN-BSN programs across the United States. The focus of the presentation was to discuss how nursing faculty can strategically teach content related to the military/veteran population and assess veteran-care competency of students enrolled in RN-BSN programs.

Susquehanna Chorale to Perform traditional Candlelight Christmas concerts

The Susquehanna Chorale, a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 40 auditioned singers, will present its traditional Candlelight Christmas concert series in December. The programs will be conducted by Founder, Artistic Director and Conductor Linda L. Tedford.

This year, the Chorale’s program will feature Members of the Messiah University Brass in a performance of John Rutter’s inspirational three-movement Gloria, as well as other works.

The program also includes a majestic opening processional, Personent Hodie, Jim Clements’ Gabriel’s Message and Eric Whitacre’s hauntingly beautiful Lux Aurumque. The Chorale is certain to bring holiday cheer with their performance of Jerry Rubino’s setting of It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and a whimsical, not-to-be-missed performance of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Traditional songs and carols follow, including an audience sing-along of Mack Wilberg’s Joy to the World. The evening concludes with the Chorale surrounding the audience for the traditional finale, Silent Night.

Performances are Friday, Dec. 16 in the Calvin and Janet High Centerat 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 17 at Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 18 at Market Square Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg 4 p.m.

A pre-concert instrumental recital will be presented by the Messiah University Brass 15 minutes prior to each performance. A reception for the audience and singers is planned following each program.

Getting a new phone? Maintain access to your Messiah account by setting up a secondary MFA method!

The preferred method for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is the use of the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone. This is the most secure and easiest to use option for securing your Messiah University account.

However, the Microsoft Authenticator app will not transfer your Messiah account between your old and new phone. It is highly recommended that you set up at least one additional method for MFA as a back-up such as a text message or a call to your personal cell phone. This will allow you to sign into your Messiah account and reset Microsoft Authenticator to use on your new phone!

On Wednesday Nov. 9, Dwayne Magee, director for Messiah Press, presented his research on the business advantages of internalizing support services before the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. Biological sciences alumna Molly Bletz was interviewed by and quoted in a recent story published by Katherine J. Wu for The Atlantic. “We’re Giving Up on the (Frog) Pandemic” describes work by scientists around the world to stave off a fungal pathogen that has decimated amphibian species everywhere. Bletz has worked on this disease since her first publication with Erik Lindquist in 2011. She is the David H. A select group of Messiah voice majors won their respective categories in the Student Auditions of the local chapter (Allegheny Mountain Chapter) of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). The competition was held in-person – the first time since 2019 – at Susquehanna University. The winners were Kacie Watkins (1st year; student of Damian Savarino), Victoria Lang (sophomore; student of Damian Savarino), Abby Weller (Sophomore; student of Damian Savarino), Brielle Finkbeiner (junior; student of Tara Savarino), Julie Knott (junior; student of Damian Savarino), and Maira Myers (junior; student of Damian Savarino). Please join the department of music in congratulating these accomplished young singers!

Brenda Elliott, department of nursing, was recently invited to contribute to an Editorial in Nursing Education Perspectives, the official journal of the National League for Nursing. Elliott and her research partners discuss building a program of research to support teaching, student learning, and faculty development through their experience as a team. Thanksgiving additional time off

Messiah University is so very grateful to each and every employee for all that you do to better our community. In order to give you additional time for rest and/or holiday preparation, employees may leave four hours early on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (November 23). Non-essential hourly employees and essential hourly employees not required to work during the early dismissal period will simply document a normal day (with regular hours) on their time sheet. Essential employees who are required to work during this time will document it just as they would for Thanksgiving Day and the day after. Happy Thanksgiving!

Susquehanna Chorale Youth Choral Festival, Nov. 20

The critically acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale and three of its educational choirs will present the Chorale’s annual Youth Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. at the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The public is invited to attend.

This inspiring intergenerational event, which inaugurates the Susquehanna Chorale’s 41st season, features the Susquehanna Chorale, the Children’s Chorale, the Susquehanna Youth Chorale, and the Susquehanna Young Women’s Chorale. The concert will include selections from the traditional choral repertoire, spirituals, and folk songs from around the world. The “family” of choirs will come together to perform the program finale, Mack Wilberg’s Anthem of Peace, conducted by Artistic Director, Founder, and Conductor Linda L. Tedford.

2022 Nobel Prize Seminar – November 29

Wrap-Around plan document and summary plan description

Messiah University is required to provide employees with a comprehensive document that outlines our benefit plans. This document is called the wrap-around plan document and summary plan description. It was distributed in April 2022 to all existing employees and is available in the on-boarding process for new employees.

Effective July 1, 2022, Messiah moved from the Guardian dental plan to the United Concordia dental plan. Due to that change, the Wrap-Around Plan Document and Summary Plan Description has been updated. The updated document is attached for your review.

Office renovations

The Conference and Event Services office located in Suite 224 will be in the process of renovations starting Monday Nov. 28 and continuing through Jan. 2, 2023. A temporary office will be set up for them in Hostetter room 113. Due to the limited space available in 113, team members will be splitting time when possible, working from home and coming into the office. The office phone will be transferred to the temporary location.

Student Honors Presentation by Ty Bair

Join us on Wednesday, Nov.30, at 5:30 pm, in Boyer 235, as Ty Bair shares his research on, “China’s Growth and Uncertain Future in Global Politics.” Much of the stability found in China comes as a result of the Chinese Communist Party’s ability to maintain a steady increase in economic standing for its citizens since the end of the Cultural Revolution. As recent signs that this growth could be reaching a stagnation point, will this turmoil significantly affect China’s standing in the global community as a cultural and economic influence? Ty is a Politics and International Relations major.

Theatre Department – spring musical announcement

Messiah University Department of Theatre and Dance is announcing a change to our spring 2023 musical production. While we were originally scheduled to produce, Little Women: The Musical, circumstances have changed that now prevent us from moving forward with this show. After careful consideration, the Theatre and Dance department will instead produce Stephen Sondheim’s classic fairy tale adaptation, Into the Woods. All currently sold tickets for Little Women: The Musical will automatically transfer to the new show. Based on the Brothers Grimm most popular folk tales, Into the Woods is a reimagining of what can happen when beloved fairy tale characters are thrown together while pursuing their dreams and wishes. The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning team of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine bring to life characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack (down from his beanstalk), the Baker and his wife, a pair of princes in search of their brides, and the big bad wolf who is on the lookout for his next meal. It intertwines these stories in increasingly dramatic and humorous ways and asks what comes after the “happily ever after” and whether the journey through the woods was worth it in the end.
