Evaluation of Falcon Fitness Center usage

The opening year of the Falcon Fitness Center is coming to a close, and as promised, a team has come together to analyze the usage data and determine if we have the capacity to allow more constituents to have access to the Center. I am excited to report that since August 29, 2017 we’ve had over 118,000 total visits to our fitness center! On a busy day, we see over 1,000 people come through the front door. That is almost half the students who live on campus! Furthermore, the spring semester saw roughly 8,000 more total visits compared to the fall. Our hope is to continue to offer more programming and education to employees and students with the goal of seeing these numbers increase next year.

Given these high usage numbers our leadership team has determined that access to the Falcon Fitness Center will be limited to current undergraduate and graduate students, employees, employee’s spouses, and dependents of employees between the ages of 16-18. It has also been determined that retired employees will be given the opportunity to purchase a yearlong membership. Usage data will continue to be collected and analyzed with the goal of always offering our community the best services possible.

We want to highlight that the indoor track is open to alumni and community members according to the schedule posted on the doors. Over the summer, a predicted low usage time, memberships will be made available to the Falcon Fitness Center. For more information on these memberships follow the link: https://www.messiah.edu/info/22900/falcon fitness center/3801/summer access and memberships

Thank you and have a great summer!

Important reminder for faculty

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2018 Fall Semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates posted on the ITS Blog. Click on this link to review the deadlines: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810 Procedure review:

  1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger approximately 6-8 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack at College Press.
  2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_materials. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
  3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager, Campus Store and Textbook Express.
  4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Diane Hunsinger at ext. 3895, dhunsing@messiah.edu or copyright@messiah.edu. Thank you for your cooperation.

Summer driving hazards

Think icy and snowy roads create the most hazardous driving conditions? Think again! According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, summer months have more fatal car accidents than winter months! Why is summer driving so dangerous? • Summer storms and thunder showers can cause hazardous conditions for driving: slippery roads, hydroplaning, flash flooding, downed trees, even hail! • With school out, there are more teens on the road. Their lack of experience (and often lack of attention) can lead to more accidents. Teens are more likely to be involved in car accidents than any other age group. • There is more road congestion as families hit the highways for vacations. In addition, vacationing drivers are often traveling unfamiliar roads so they may be driving too slowly or making sudden stops and turns. • The chance for tire blowouts increases during hot weather as the air inside your tires expands from the heat. The chances of your engine overheating also increase when the weather is hot; if this happens, pull over to let it cool down. • Road construction increases during the summer resulting in delays, detours, and road rage. • More bicycles and motorcycles are on the road when the sun is shining. Because they are more difficult to see than other vehicles, you need to be alert for them at all times. • Children are outside playing more in the summer, increasing the chances of a child darting into the street and in front of your vehicle. • More people are walking and jogging which means you need to be alert for pedestrians, especially during early morning and evening hours when dark clothes make it more difficult to see them. • The sun’s bright glare can temporarily blind you if you aren’t wearing appropriate sunglasses. • And dehydration can be a very real safety concern on long drives if you don’t keep a bottle of water handy. Likewise, if you break down or are stranded for any length of time, you want to make sure you have water available, especially if you have young children with you. Don’t get careless with your driving because you don’t have to worry about black ice or bitter cold. Remember that summer driving has its own set of safety hazards!

Undergraduate Commencement: Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19

Schedule and details

The 2018 Undergraduate Commencement weekend schedule of events is posted online at www.messiah.edu/UGcommencement. This year, this website will also provide a link to the live video stream of the Commencement ceremony. Members of the Community of Educators should have already received information from the Provost’s Office regarding their participation in Commencement weekend. Faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the Commencement ceremony itself will soon receive an email memo regarding their role in the ceremony from the Commencement Committee.

If you have any questions regarding Commencement, please contact Carla Gross, co-chair of the Commencement Committee, at ext. 6940 or cgross@messiah.edu.

Baccalaureate service/reception parking

  • Prior to the Baccalaureate service and reception, traffic personnel will direct guests to designated parking areas on campus. College employees do not receive reserved parking for Baccalaureate.
  • The Department of Safety asks that all guests walk from where traffic control personnel direct you to park. (Shuttle service is not provided Friday evening.)
  • To avoid safety hazards, please do not stop in the middle of the roadway to drop off your party. If you have questions regarding parking or drop-off locations for guests with a disability, please contact Events Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.
  • Please note that Baccalaureate is a ticketed event; see the Commencement web site for details.

Commencement day parking

Employee parking

  • Members of the Community of Educators and other employees who are marching in the processional or participating in the Commencement ceremony will receive a reserved parking pass via campus mail. Employees MUST show their parking pass to traffic control personnel upon entering campus to be directed to their designated reserved parking areas. All other employees who will be working the Commencement ceremony should ask their supervisor where their designated parking area will be that day.
  • Members of the COE and other employees coming to campus that morning should use the Mill Road/South Entrance in order to avoid congestion with visitor traffic.
  • Due to the significantly increased volume of traffic on campus for Commencement, the Department of Safety strongly encourages all employees to arrive on campus no later than 8:15 a.m. in order to alleviate being delayed in traffic, and to assist that they are directed to their reserved parking areas on campus. It is also extremely important to follow all parking direction and instruction from safety personnel while entering and leaving campus, as traffic conditions can change quickly and officers are not able to stop traffic flow to have conversation with individual drivers.
  • An important reminder—employees are not permitted to schedule vendor visits, pick-ups or deliveries on the day of Commencement as it interferes with the increased and altered traffic flow on campus that day.

Guest parking

Any questions regarding parking for Commencement weekend may be directed to Events Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.

You can receive the discount with your ID number when you register.

Fall 2018 early arrivals

If you plan to sponsor students for early arrival (before Sunday, Sept. 2), please complete the online early arrival request form or if you have a large group of students, please contact housing@messiah.edu for a spreadsheet to fill out and return by Wednesday, Aug. 1. The earliest students may return this year is Friday, Aug. 17, but we ask that you bring your students back as late as possible. Please note that the meal plan for returning students will not be active until Friday, Aug. 31 at lunch. If you need meal cards for the students you are bringing back early, please make these arrangements through the Falcon Exchange. There is no charge for students to stay on campus. However, any additions received between Thursday, Aug. 2–Aug. 16 will be charged $25/person and between Aug. 17–30 will be charged $50/person. Move-in day 2018; volunteers needed

New student orientation and move-in day will be Friday, Aug. 31 and the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is in need of volunteers to serve during move-in day 2018. Volunteers are needed in 3-hour time slots to help move new students into their residence halls on Friday, Aug. 31. You can choose a shift of 9 a.m. – noon, 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. or noon-3 p.m. You will receive a free t-shirt. Please know that lifting and walking stairs is required. We look forward to serving with you and thank you in advance for your time and help!

Make change happen. Choose here!

Did you know that Messiah College purchased over 100,000 compostable to-go containers in the fall 2017 semester? That is a lot of waste, both in terms of resources and meal plan dollars. What if there was a better way? What if clicking ‘here’ rather than “to go” on the order screen actually meant something? What if students could reduce their impact on the environment AND save a little money? Every time you choose ‘for here’, you are taking a small step towards a more sustainable future. When a campus community begins taking small steps together, those steps can add up to big change. Beginning Thursday, April 26, when you get your order “for here”, you will receive a $0.25 discount on your order. All you need to do is click “for here” when placing your order in The Falcon or Union Café. The discount will be taken at the register. The discount applies equally to ALL payment types (cash, credit, dining dollars, employee meal plan, etc.).

  4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their coursepack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Diane Hunsinger at ext. 3895, dhunsing@messiah.edu or copyright@messiah.edu. Thank you for your cooperation.

Summer Flex-Time Program 2018

Beginning on Monday, May 21, the College will again permit the use of summer flexible work arrangements. Implementation of a Summer Flex-Time Program is at the discretion of division executives and directors and requires approval in advance from the appropriate dean, provost or vice president.  If you plan to allow flexible work arrangements this summer, please meet with your teams to discuss.

In work units that generally operate an eight-hour traditional day schedule, Monday through Friday, the Summer Flex-Time Program will permit employees to work for nine hours on four days of the work week, in order to allow for a four-hour day on the fifth day of the work week.  In other units, where work requires employees to be available in the early morning, throughout the evening, and/or on weekends, supervisors may adopt work schedules unique to the respective unit (though consistent with federal standards and regulations for documenting and paying for hours worked).

With the approval of the division executive, work units can design flexible work arrangements that fit the needs of the unit as long as they meet the following criteria:

  1. In every case, a flexible schedule must assure adequate maintenance of the unit’s work responsibilities.
  2. Work units that adopt a Summer Flex-Time Program are required to maintain coverage of essential services for each day of the work week.
  3. Offices with significant contact with students, College guests, and/or off-campus audiences should provide phone coverage and basic office support for all 40 hours of the traditional work week.
  4. A supervisor has every right to limit the number of people who can participate in the flexible work arrangements each week so as to ensure adequate coverage.
  5. Unless the work unit is part of Operations, official work days may not begin before 7 a.m. or end after 6 p.m. Operations may employ different scheduling so as to meet the needs of the unit as long as it is approved by both the appropriate director and the vice president.
  6. Employees must include at least a 30-minute lunch period in each nine-hour day.
  7. Supervisors must approve all arrangements in advance.  Employees must coordinate their individual work plans with their supervisors and receive approval accordingly.
  8. When employees take time off, the sum of all hours reported in a week (regular hours, vacation hours, sick hours, etc.) must equal 40 hours. If an employee worked a 9-hour day during a week in which he/she plans to take vacation, the vacation charged should be less than 8 hours.
  9. For the purposes of overtime calculations, please remember that vacation is no longer included in the calculation per the recent policy changes.
  10. Holiday pay for Memorial Day and July 4 will be 8 hours regardless of revised schedules. Employees on revised schedules who would otherwise work more than 8 hours on those days will need to add the additional hours elsewhere during the weeks of May 28 – June 1 and July 2 – July 6.
  11. The Summer Flex-Time Program may be implemented the week beginning on Monday, May 21, 2018 and may extend as late as Friday, Aug. 10, 2018. Again, this is dependent upon the needs of each department and the resulting schedules.  There may units across campus for which flexible work arrangements are simply not possible because of summer demands.

Additional guidelines may need to be established by individual work units in order to allow for an orderly and effective implementation of the summer flex-time practice.  In particular, work units that traditionally work beyond the traditional day schedule will develop guidelines appropriate for the requirements of that work unit.  In every case, plans for flexible work arrangements should be reviewed by the appropriate dean or provost/ vice president.

Business casual

In work units that do not require a standard uniform or dress code, it may be acceptable to implement a business casual dress code for the summer when meetings and appointments do not preclude doing so. It should be noted that business casual is a comfortably relaxed version of classic business attire with no sacrifice of professionalism. It should not be confused with beach or picnic attire. Shorts, t-shirts, jeans and flip-flops are not appropriate for the office.  If the attire currently worn is business casual, this is not an opportunity to dress even more casually.

Questions and suggestions about the Summer Flex-Time Program should be directed to the Office of Human Resources and Compliance and/or the senior administrator responsible for the respective work unit.

NEWS

Dr. Nancy J. Patrick, director of the graduate program in education and professor of special education, plans to retire from Messiah College during the summer of 2018. Dr. Patrick joined the Messiah College family in the fall of 2002 when she was hired to write and lead the first Messiah College Pennsylvania Special Education certification teacher education program within the Department of Education. For the following nine years she continued to work in the undergraduate program, until 2011, when she was asked to co-author with Dr. Jenn Fisler the graduate program in education. Since that time, she has lead the graduate program with grace and enthusiasm as she works with teachers at the graduate level, always striving to improve the learning experience for every student—her own students, and their students in turn. Dr. Patrick will take her years of experience and the joy she finds in helping others to her own private practice that she plans to open soon. There she will work to support individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families. Please join us as we wish her well and celebrate her years of service at a reception on Thursday, May 3, from 4 – 6 p.m. in Howe Atrium.

Please join us for a reception honoring Linda Tedford, Wednesday, May 2, from 2 – 4 p.m. in Steinbrecher Atrium in the High Center. Linda will retire this spring after 24 years as director of choral activities at Messiah. Linda has received significant recognition as a leader in the choral field, and has contributed in many important ways to both the music program and Messiah as a whole. Please help us celebrate her many years at Messiah!

Senior biology major Samuel Stambaugh presented a talk entitled “Cryopreservation of Human Erythrocytes for Laboratory Culture of Plasmodium falciparum” to the annual spring meeting of the Helminthological Society of Washington held at the Penn State York campus on Saturday, April 14. Given in response to a personal invitation by the meeting organizer who had heard Sam speak at the recent Pennsylvania Academy of Science meeting, the talk described results from an ongoing senior research project that Sam and collaborator Nicole Clemente are conducting under the direction of Dr. Larry Mylin (biological sciences, Messiah College). In recognition of his outstanding talk, Sam was awarded with the society’s Judith Humphrey Shaw Undergraduate Award. This local project supports ongoing malaria research efforts in Macha, Zambia that are guided by Phil Thuma ’70.

Dr. David Kline will present “A Joint Spatial Model of Opioid Associated Deaths and Treatment Admissions in Ohio” on Thursday, April 26, from 5 – 6 p.m. in Frey 110 (Alexander Auditorium). Dr. Kline is a Messiah alumnus with a Ph.D. in biostatistics from The Ohio State University. He is currently a research scientist at The Ohio State University in the Department of Biomedical Informatics Center for Biostatistics. The In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) has announce the winners of their annual achievement awards and Messiah College Press has been awarded the 2018 IPMA Organizational Impact Award. The Press has earned this award because of a collaborative effort made between Sr. Graphic Designer Ashley Todd and members of our Department of Human Resources and Compliance surrounding the production of a valuable resource brochure for those responding to sexual violence in our campus community. Ashley met a challenging topic with a new approach by presenting the information in an inviting, creative way, while also being sensitive to use imagery that did not trigger a traumatic response within a victim of violence. The imagery selected was inspired by the verse: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5),” with the goal of bringing hope to such a difficult situation. IPMA is the largest association of in-plant printing and mailing professionals. They boast 700 members from all industry segments including higher education, K-12, government, manufacturing, finance, insurance, faith-based, corporate and health care. The IPMA awards serve to recognize print and mail centers for outstanding contributions related to non-production activities within their parent organizations. The award winners will be honored at IPMA’s annual conference, June 10-14, in Costa Mesa, California.

After serving Messiah for nearly 19 years, Registrar Jim Sotherden has lived by “make the right decision for the right reason.”  Over the past seven years, Jim has also served as the coordinator of student retention—the first in Messiah’s history.  Always looking for ways to improve the quality of work while providing the highest level of customer service, Jim has sought out ways to leverage technology to assist the campus in improving its processes. Now that Jim is retiring, he and Joan can devote more time to their granddaughter and cheer on the Orange to victory. Please come and help celebrate Jim’s years of service and wish him well on Monday, April 30, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Howe Atrium, Boyer Hall.  Light refreshments will be served and there will be a brief program at 12:30 p.m.

MESSIAH 411:

Key return information

This is a reminder from Key Services that any keys you hold and no longer need should be returned to Key Services in the Lenhert maintenance building before the end of the spring semester. Important film on refugee crisis, with live Q&A with Chinese artist-activist director

The film “Human Flow” is a powerful documentary about the modern refugee crisis by one of the most well-known contemporary Chinese artists and activists. Ai WeiWei’s art has been exhibited in major museums around the world and he himself has been imprisoned for his highly critical stance on Chinese human rights. The film, captured over the course of a year in 23 countries, follows a chain of refugees’ stories that stretches through Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Greece, Iraq, Kenya, Mexico, Turkey, Germany and France. After the screening, attendees will have the special opportunity to participate in a live webcast Q&A with Ai WeiWei himself. Join us this Sunday, April 29, at 2:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema for this free screening and live webcast Q&A. Hosted by the Messiah College Galleries at the School of the Arts and Murray Library. Here’s a trailer to watch and share: https://vimeo.com/241594135

Open enrollment begins soon

Monday, May 7, 2018 – Wednesday, May 31, 2018

Messiah College offers eligible employees a comprehensive and valuable benefits program. Open Enrollment is the period in which eligible employees have the opportunity to enroll or change their options for health and welfare benefits. The changes you make during Open Enrollment will be effective July 1, 2018.

EVERYONE WILL BE REQUIRED TO ACTIVELY CHOOSE THEIR BENEFITS THIS YEAR. YOUR BENEFITS WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY ROLL OVER TO THE NEW YEAR.

The process to elect your benefits is changing this year so it is very important to attend an Open Enrollment meeting. The meetings will provide valuable details on upcoming changes to your benefits and the process to choose your benefits. The meetings will also provide you the opportunity to ask questions.

It is very important to take the time to educate yourself about the changes to your benefit plans by attending one of the meetings listed below so you are able to choose the best coverage for you and your family.

 DATE  DAY  LOCATION  TIME
 05/07/2018  Monday  Parmer Cinema  10:30-11:30 a.m.
 05/08/2018  Tuesday  Parmer Cinema  2 – 3 p.m.
 05/16/2018  Wednesday  Parmer Cinema  2 – 3 p.m.
 05/17/2018

EVENING MEETING

 Thursday  Parmer Cinema  8:30-9:30 p.m.

The elections you make during open enrollment will become effective July 1, 2018 and will remain in effect the entire year (July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019) unless you experience a life change status such as marriage, divorce, birth of a child, death in the family, etc.

An Open Enrollment Guide will be emailed to you in the coming weeks. It will provide an outline of the benefits available to you for the new plan year and the process to choose your benefits.

Plan to attend one of these important meetings.

Campus climate survey follow-up

One year ago, in the spring of 2017, a campus climate survey was disseminated to campus in an effort to measure the perceptions and prevalence of discrimination and harassment at Messiah College.

As analysis of survey results has concluded, several options are available for campus community members to hear these results and look to future response and programming.

Live presentations of the survey results in narrative form will be held:

Thursday, April 26
Noon -1 p.m.
Parmer Cinema

Monday, April 30
1-2 p.m.
Parmer Cinema

All employees are welcome to attend these sessions.

For those interested in reviewing the survey results but unable to attend, a link with secure documents will be provided to campus on May 1, following the live presentations. These documents will include data overview, narrative summary, and FAQ information.

For more information, please see the linked FAQ.

Thank you for your participation in this process, interest in the outcomes, and care for our community.

The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” Bloch’s “Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service)” for Baritone, Chorus and Orchestra

The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Messiah College Concert Choir, the Messiah College Choral Arts Society and ensemble-in-residence The Susquehanna Chorale will perform two of the great sacred masterpieces of the 20th century on Friday, April 13 at 8 p.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts, Parmer Hall.

Written for a synagogue in San Francisco in the 1930s, “Sacred Service” presents the Sabbath liturgy of that time, but in a setting for full orchestra, baritone and chorus, which Bloch clearly intended for the concert hall as well. The concert will open with more music of Bernstein: “Three Dance Episodes” from the musical “On the Town.”
