Having joined the Messiah College community in 2013, Patterson has spent most of her time in Graduate Programs, most recently supporting the Occupational Therapy and Dietetic Internship programs. Randall Zwally, senior lecturer in music, attended, by special invitation from the U. S. Dept. of State, the Swearing-In Ceremony, in Washington, D. C. of the new U. S. Ambassador to Guatemala, Dr. Luis Arreaga, on Oct. 17. After the ceremony Dr. Arreaga invited Zwally to come to Guatemala this summer to present a series of classical guitar concerts and lecture recitals. Zwally’s association with Guatemala developed during his time of study at the National Conservatory of Music of that country.

Eight members of the Engle Center Team are participating in this year’s Harrisburg Marathon Relay. They have formed two teams of four and each team hopes to raise enough money to provide for a clean water well in a village in India that currently has no access to clean water.

Last year, four of our staff members ran for this cause, and this year we have doubled our efforts! Our desire for people to live in good health extends beyond our campus and to the other side of the world. Help us make a dent in eliminating water-borne illness!

2017 Religion and Society Lecture

Rev. Daniel G. Groody, C.S.C., will give a lecture titled, “Passing Over: A Theology of Migration” at Messiah College on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. This event is sponsored by the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies.

Father Groody is a Catholic priest, a Holy Cross religious, a scholar, teacher and an award-winning author and film producer. He is currently an Associate Professor of Theology and Global Affairs and the Faculty Director of the Global Leadership Program at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He teaches courses on U.S. Latino Spirituality, Christian Spirituality and the Heart’s Desire and Social Change. He lectures widely in the United States as well as in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Family Concert with Messiah College Symphony Orchestra

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2018 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines have been set. Procedure review:

1. Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
2. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
3. It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
4. VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed a concert at Duke Divinity School Sept. 1 with the New Caritas Orchestra under the baton of theologian/musician Jeremy Begbie. The orchestra was comprised of 37 Christian orchestral musicians from top orchestras and music schools from the U.S., including the Boston Symphony, National Symphony and the Indianapolis Symphony. The concert, titled “Home, Away & Home Again” was presented in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Alison Noble, associate professor of chemistry, was selected by her alma mater, Westmont College, to be among 80 alumni honored at this year’s 80th Homecoming Gala as one whose life exemplifies Westmont’s mission “to cultivate thoughtful scholars, grateful servants and faithful leaders for global engagement with the academy, church and world.”

An evening with journalist and presidential historian Jon Meacham

Presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Jon Meacham will speak at Messiah College on “The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency” Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Meacham is one of America’s most prominent public intellectuals. A regular guest on “Morning Joe,” he is known as a skilled raconteur with a depth of knowledge about politics, religion and current affairs. He understands how issues and events impact our lives and why historical context matters. Meacham’s latest presidential biography, “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush,” debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list in 2015. The Times said, “’Destiny and Power’ reflects the qualities of both subject and biographer: judicious, balanced and deliberative, with a deep appreciation of history and the personalities who shape it.”

Fall shred day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus Tuesday, Oct. 17 for confidential document shredding. The Shredding Solutions truck will be located in the service area parking spots outside Hoffman Hall and will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed.

What can be shredded?
All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED. Documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (a paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Normal shredding needs:
Please bring all paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two hours scheduled. Plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (Please note: The shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m., so we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.)

If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, IT security analyst, at ext. 6790. Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed a concert tour of central and southern Sweden with Trio Atlantis, a professional chamber ensemble comprised of Goranson and Swedish instrumentalists Erik Hagstrom and Britta Holger. The tour included seven performances from Aug. 17-28.

The orchestra was comprised of 37 Christian orchestral musicians from top orchestras and music schools in the U.S., including the Boston Symphony, National Symphony and the Indianapolis Symphony. The concert, titled “Home, Away & Home Again” was presented in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Passport processing on campus and alert to PA residents about real ID

Representatives from the Cumberland County Courthouse will be on campus Tuesday, Oct. 24 to process passport applications. Applicants need to bring their photo documents: original birth certificate PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE, driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE (non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID), completed application, and fees ($110 check made out to the Department of State and $25 cash or check made out to the Prothonotary’s Office) to the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Photo services will be available. Cost is $10 in cash or check made out to Messiah College.

PA RESIDENTS ALERT: You may be aware that Pennsylvania is one of seven states that have not complied with the government mandate to incorporate REAL ID requirements for driver’s licenses in order to use them for identification purposes for air travel (even in the U.S.) entrance into federal buildings and military bases. If PA does not comply or obtain an extension, in the near future, PA driver’s license holders will need another form of compliant identification, such as a passport to use for these purposes. This may be a good time to secure a passport if you currently do not have one. An evening with journalist and presidential historian Jon Meacham

Presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jon Meacham will speak at Messiah College on “The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency” on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Jon Meacham is one of America’s most prominent public intellectuals. A regular guest on Morning Joe, he is known as a skilled raconteur with a depth of knowledge about politics, religion and current affairs. He understands how issues and events impact our lives and why historical context matters. Meacham’s latest Presidential biography, “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush,” debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestsellers list in November 2015. The Times said, “Destiny and Power reflects the qualities of both subject and biographer: judicious, balanced, and deliberative, with a deep appreciation of history and the personalities who shape it.”

Google Vice President Dr. Greg Moore, M.D., Ph.D. will give a campus presentation on Monday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. This event is sponsored by the College Honors Program.

Moore is Google’s senior global healthcare leader. He is a distinguished physician, engineer, innovator, neuroradiologist, technology and clinical informatics professional, and neuroscientist. He is passionate about transforming health care technology to benefit humankind. He is also an advocate for children with special needs and has extensive involvement with medical missions in the developing world. For his Messiah presentation, he will address the interface between technology and global health care.

Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 8-14) – Every second counts: Plan two ways out

In a fire, seconds count. That’s why the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to plan at least two evacuation routes at work and at home. As a general rule, a fire can double in size every 60 seconds and the black smoke generated from burning synthetics and plastics is not only toxic but can be so dense that it makes seeing impossible. Don’t wait to make an escape plan. Know where building exits are located and how to reach them – even blindfolded. Plan how to provide assistance to anyone who may need help–a co-worker on the job or a family member at home. If you discover the fire, sound the alarm so that others know to evacuate. And whether at work or at home, close doors behind you as you leave the building to help slow down the spread of fire, smoke and heat. Meet outside at an agreed upon location and never go back into a burning building. Call 911 immediately.

Oregon extension faculty to visit campus

Oregon Extension faculty member Heidi Gehman will be on campus Mon., Oct. 23 and Tues., Oct. 24 to talk to students about opportunities for students to study at the Oregon Extension.

Each fall, the Oregon Extension welcomes 20-25 students to a rustic setting in the Cascade Mountains, where serious students can ask their deepest questions, read gripping and challenging books, wrestle with profound ideas in writing, and converse honestly and animatedly with fellow students and six faculty. With three or four cabin-mates, students buy and cook their own meals. Backpacking, a trip to San Francisco and the Oregon coast, rafting, biking and Bible study opportunities complete the autumn adventure.

We are seeking nominations from the Messiah College community of female students in their junior or senior year to be a part of the newly created “Women of Influence Mentoring Program.” We are seeking 10-15 female students to participate.

Objectives of Proposed Women of Influence Mentoring Program
1. To connect female students (preference for first generation students) with women (alumni/parents/friends of Messiah) to participate in an informal networking and mentoring program.
2. To support female students in their academic, vocational, spiritual and social growth.
3. To grow scholarship aid and endowment for women students.

• To attend two events annually on Messiah’s campus sponsored by Women of Influence Mentoring Program

Dr. David Hazen is the newest addition to the Department of Education this year. He earned his Ed. D. from Walden University in Teacher Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction and will be teaching Educational Psychology, Instructional Design and Assessment for Middle and Secondary Grades, and Social Studies: Climate, Curriculum, and Instruction. David grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and is a Green Bay Packers football fan. He thoroughly enjoys exploring the outdoors; the Rocky Mountains in the west, especially the Bitterroot and Salt River Ranges of Montana and Wyoming, are his favorite places to travel. When he is not teaching, you can probably find David at one of his three sons’ sporting events, fly fishing, hiking or reading one of his favorite history books (1776, Truman, or Morning on Horseback by David McCullough). He is grateful to the Lord for bringing him to Messiah College in order to teach others and learn from them.

Movie on the green

Human Resources is once again partnering with Student Involvement and Leadership Programs to host an outdoor movie event. Disney’s “Moana” will be showing on a 40′ tall screen on Fri., Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. on the Eisenhower lawn. Coinciding with Family Weekend, this event is open to all employees and their families as well as students and their families. There will be face painting for children and great concession food! All proceeds from the evening will go to the Houston Food Bank for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Advise a fall break service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is pleased to offer an opportunity for employees to participate in and advise a student service trip over Fall Break. Advisors serve alongside students, assist student leaders in facilitation of reflection and devotions, and assist in any problem-solving that may arise. All costs are covered for advisors.

For nearly 75 years, CBFNY has worked with inner city, at risk, and disabled youth through summer camp programs consisting of a variety of activities. Messiah students will have the opportunity to participate in outreach and discipleship ministries and will engage in team-building, evangelism, and conflict resolution skills through an in-depth orientation that will introduce participants to the realities of urban life.

Priority One Ministries (Bronx, NY)
Priority One partners with a number of inner-city organizations, churches and ministries who serve the disadvantaged of NYC. Volunteers connect with several of these organizations to directly impact and serve people, such as: A Breakfast & Lunch Ministry for the homeless; an after-school program for tutoring inner-city children; the World Vision Storehouse and more!

2017 Office of Marketing and Communications change in photography paradigm

Effective Sept. 15, 2017, the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) is no longer resourced to support photography requests from individual campus departments or offices for their programs or events.  OMC relies on a mix of professional and student photographers, prioritizing its resources for student recruitment marketing communications and editorial-specific photography for the Bridge alumni magazine and other institutional news channels.

Moving forward, departments who would like to arrange student or professional photography for their department-specific events may do so by scheduling and providing payment for those services directly with the photographer. To request a list of student and professional photographers that the College has used successfully for past events, please email photography@messiah.edu or kgarlinger@messiah.edu.

Continued services:

• OMC will continue to provide the photography service of taking employee headshots and group shots of faculty and staff for campus communications. This service will be scheduled at multiple points throughout the year, and campus will be notified of these dates via the Intercom and mass email.

• OMC will continue to provide photography coverage for annual milestone events in the life of the College such as Welcome Week, Homecoming and Commencement (as these photos are used in the Bridge, social media and other OMC communications).

• Additionally, OMC’s professional photography and image library will continue to be made available for campus’ use in their own communications via the Cumulus digital image archive.

Digital Literacy – Professional Learning Community (PLC)

Messiah College’s Strategic Plan (2016-2020) includes an action step toward meeting the needs of a changing student body with a focus on digital proficiency. In light of this, a study conducted in the spring of 2017 assessed the digital literacy of our first-year students. What is digital literacy? What does it mean to be digitally literate? How digitally literate were our first-year students in 2017? How can we better meet the needs of our students with a focus on digital proficiency?

We will share a small number of resources related to seven digital literacy competencies and discuss applications/practices for furthering Messiah College’s mission toward digital proficiency.

Advise a fall break service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is pleased to offer an opportunity for employees to participate in and advise a student service trip over Fall Break. 2017 Office of Marketing and Communications change in photography paradigm

 Effective Sept. 15, 2017, the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) is no longer resourced to support photography requests from individual campus departments or offices for their programs or events. OMC relies on a mix of professional and student photographers, prioritizing its resources for student recruitment marketing communications and editorial-specific photography for the Bridge alumni magazine and other institutional news channels.

Moving forward, departments who would like to arrange student or professional photography for their department-specific events may do so by scheduling and providing payment for those services directly with the photographer. To request a list of student and professional photographers that the College has used successfully for past events, please email photography@messiah.edu or kgarlinger@messiah.edu.

Continued services: 

• OMC will continue to provide the photography service of taking employee headshots and group shots of faculty and staff for campus communications. This service will be scheduled at multiple points throughout the year, and campus will be notified of these dates via the Intercom and mass email.

• OMC will continue to provide photography coverage for annual milestone events in the life of the College such as Welcome Week, Homecoming and Commencement (as these photos are used in the Bridge, social media and other OMC communications).

• Additionally, OMC’s professional photography and image library will continue to be made available for campus’ use in their own communications via the Cumulus digital image archive.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month. For the month of September, we are hosting the following networking receptions: Thurs., Sept. 21: 8- 8:45 p.m. (science majors), for alumni and students Mon., Sept. 25: Noon-12:45 p.m. (connecting alumni/students in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland/Columbus area ), alumni/seniors Fri., Sept. 29: Noon- 12:45 p.m. (Golden Grads), for alumni After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced Danielle Chun ‘17 as a finalist for the 2017 AASHE Sustainability Awards in the undergraduate research category for her outstanding research in sustainability. Winners will be announced during the opening ceremony at the AASHE Conference & Expo in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 15. Finalists entries were judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category. “The Messiah College community is excited for Danielle and honored to have such a passionate student be able to carry out her interests in resolving pressing social and environmental concerns,” says Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability. He adds that with roughly 12 million food insecure families in the U.S. and 40 percent of our food being wasted, Danielle’s research is timely. “I imagine she will make an impact on other institutions as much as she has been on ours.” Danielle’s paper, “The Drivers Behind Edible Food Recovery Programs at Institutions of Higher Education” is the culmination of Danielle’s passion and concern for the environmental protection and community well-being during her pursuit of a degree in economic development (concentration: sustainability). Her research stems from a desire to see the work of food insecurity and food waste coupled to solve the pressing social and environmental challenge that it is. The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the following promotions:

Dr. Julie Gomboc-Turyan has been promoted to director of graduate curriculum and student services and assistant professor of education. Julie directly supports new graduate program development efforts as well as student services. She will be assisting with assessment plans, and partnering with others to ensure that graduate-level programs are in compliance with Accreditation, PDE and State Authorization regulations and standards.

Rebekah Ostby has been promoted to finance and projects manager for the School of Graduate Studies. Rebekah is responsible for all financial modeling, budget preparation and budget monitoring for the School of Graduate Studies. In addition she is the point person for the Winding Hill location and serves as the liaison to the property management group, Crabtree and Rohrbaugh.

The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to welcome the following three new employees: Leah Wagner: records specialist, School of Graduate Studies. Leah is a 2017 Messiah graduate and is the primary point-person for answering all incoming calls from both current and prospective students. She will be providing support to Graduate Registrar and Graduate Enrollment. Leah’s work-station is located at Winding hill. As an undergraduate student, Leah was a three-year work-study in the Registrar’s Office.

Sierra Kinslow: graduate enrollment counselor. Sierra is a 2017 Messiah graduate. In this role, Sierra will be recruiting graduate students in the education, higher education and conducting programs. As an undergraduate student, Sierra worked in the Admissions Office, having served as an ambassador as well as an intern. Sierra will be located at Winding Hill.

Halima Krugh: graduate enrollment counselor. Halima is a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois (BA in communications). Her experience includes project management, sales and public relations in the banking industry, the University of Illinois School of Music, as well as the Pennsylvania-Delaware District Council of The Assemblies of God. Most recently, she has been a development specialist at The Pennsylvania State University, Middletown. Halima will be recruiting graduate students for programs in business and leadership and nursing and will be located at Winding Hill.

Please welcome Lisa Brubaker as our clinical liaison placement coordinator in the Department of Nursing. Lisa will replace Nancy Frank, who is transitioning to assistant professor of nursing, clinical track. Lisa has a bachelor’s in behavioral science from Widener University and has experience as a substitute teacher in several area school districts. Lisa was the administrative assistant for the Messiah College Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Winding Hill. She and her husband live in Mechanicsburg with their five children. Additionally, Kristen Slabaugh, DNP, CRNP has recently transitioned from an undergraduate teaching role to a primary appointment in the School of Graduate Studies as the coordinator of the DNP program. Kristen is a Messiah College alum (BSN) and earned the MSN from Penn State University and the DNP from the University of South Alabama. Her areas of expertise and interest include women’s health, pediatrics and family practice.

Water hyacinth for ponds. Have a pond? I have lots of water hyacinth that I am happy to give to a good (or any) home. They are green floating plants with purple flowers. Let me know if you want some and how many (I bought 3 total and now have over 100). They are prolific!
