Lawrie Merz will assume responsibilities for caring for the library facilities and serving on the search committee for a new director. Beth Transue will be providing leadership of the Library Committee, supervising budgeting, and serving on the steering committee for the Sawyer Digital Proficiency Initiative. 1920s musical comedy “The Boy Friend” opens Thursday night

The Jazz Age lives on! Let Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance take you to the glitz and glam of 1920s France in Sandy Wilson’s “The Boy Friend,” opening this Thursday night and running for two weekends in Miller Theater. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Carrie Widdowson as Messiah College’s new registrar beginning July 1. She has served as senior associate registrar for the past several years. Please congratulate Carrie on her coming new appointment. As part of this transition, for the next year, Dr. John Chopka, vice president for enrollment management, will assume the leadership responsibilities of the retention team, which had been part of the registrar’s responsibilities. The registrar will continue to be an important member of the retention team. In addition, the academic support services of The Learning Center, The Office of Disability Services, and Supplemental Instruction will also report to Dr. Chopka. The long-term structure for retention and academic support services will be reviewed during the coming year.

Voice student makes Harrisburg Symphony debut!

Ellen Shockey, senior music theatre major and voice student of Tara Savarino, recently participated in a master class with Scott Coulter, Broadway performer and music theatre clinician. The master class was sponsored by the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. W-2s now available

W-2s for 2017 wages have been mailed out to your current payroll address. Most of you will be receiving your W-2s at your home address. Some international students and employees residing on campus will receive their W-2s via your campus mail address. Employees may contact the Payroll Office if the W-2 is not received by Feb. 14. In addition to the paper W-2 form, W-2s are now accessible to current student and non-student employees via Employee Self-Service. Keith Quesenberry, assistant professor of marketing, was recently quoted in the New York Times article “Yes, More Facebook Friends Are Asking You for Money” on Dec. 26. He also published an article in Harvard Business Review “The Basic Social Media Mistakes Companies Still Make”  on Jan. 2.

Dr. Dottie Weigel, Graduate Program in Higher Education, was appointed to the editorial board for The Journal of The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. The Journal is a semiannual, refereed publication providing current research on the first college year and other significant student transitions.

EMPOWER is back!

One of the most popular wellness programs we’ve offered at Messiah is back for the spring semester. EMPOWER is an on-site weight management program that enables participants to move forward in meeting personal goals, provides helpful knowledge in the areas of physical activity and nutrition, and creates a community of support.

Through eight weekly meetings, utilizing interactive engagement with a senior health coach and individual sharing, participants are guided into a lifetime of weight management success, and strengthened by a community of support within the workplace.

We are offering the 8-week program on Mondays from 12:30-1:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 29. We can only offer the program if we get at least 15 employees to register, so find a friend and sign up today. Please only register if you are able to attend at least six of the eight sessions. Register by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu. Deadline for registrations is Jan. 15.

The Department of Human Development and Family Science was well represented at the National Council on Family Relations Conference in Orlando, Nov. 15-18. Seventeen undergraduate HDFS students joined three HDFS faculty in attending and contributing to the conference program. Dr. Erin Boyd-Soisson, professor of human development and family science, and Lindsay Bower ’17 (HDFS) presented “Experiential Learning: Assessing the Effectiveness of a Preschool Observation Assignment in Students’ Retention of Child Development Course Concepts and Theories.” Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, and Josiah Harmes ‘19 (HDFS) presented “Experiential Learning and its Impact on the Affective Domain of Learning.” He also co-presented “The Effect of Local Immigration Policy and Enforcement on Midwestern Immigrant Families” with Jorge Chvez, Marlana del Hierro and Omhagain Dayeen. Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, and Verity Hwang ‘19 (HDFS) presented “Creating an FLE Program in an Undergraduate Family Life Education Methodology Capstone Course.” Hamon and Susan Piland ’18 (HDFS) joined other colleagues in presenting a roundtable at the Affiliate Councils Workshop entitled “Mid-Atlantic Council—Over 25 Years of Insight—Engaging Students and Professionals Through the MACFR Annual Conference.” Hamon and Amanda Strong ‘18 (HDFS) also co-presented a paper entitled “Promoting Intergenerational Diversity Outside the College Classroom: The Elder Service Partner Program.”

Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, and Suzanne Smith (Washington State University, Vancouver) had their article “Family Science as Translational Science: A History of the Discipline” published in Family Relations, doi:10.1111/fare.12273. Hamon was asked to write the lead article for this special collection which examined the translational nature of family science.

EMPOWER is back!

One of the most popular wellness programs we’ve offered at Messiah is back for the spring semester. EMPOWER is an on-site weight management program that enables participants to move forward in meeting personal goals, provides helpful knowledge in the areas of physical activity and nutrition, and creates a community of support.

Through eight weekly meetings, utilizing interactive engagement with a Senior Health Coach and individual sharing, participants are guided into a lifetime of weight management success, and strengthened by a community of support within the workplace.

We are offering the 8-week program on Mondays from 12:30-1:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 29. We can only offer the program if we get at least 15 employees to register. So find a friend and sign up today. But only register if you are able to attend at least 6 of the 8 sessions. Register by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu. Deadline for registrations is Jan. 15.

The Department of Human Development and Family Science was well represented at the National Council on Family Relations Conference in Orlando, Nov. 15-18. Seventeen undergraduate HDFS students joined three HDFS faculty in attending and contributing to the conference program. Dr. Erin Boyd-Soisson, professor of human development and family science, and Lindsay Bower ’17 (HDFS) presented “Experiential Learning: Assessing the Effectiveness of a Preschool Observation Assignment in Students’ Retention of Child Development Course Concepts and Theories.” Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, and Josiah Harmes ‘19 (HDFS) presented “Experiential Learning and its Impact on the Affective Domain of Learning.” He also co-presented “The Effect of Local Immigration Policy and Enforcement on Midwestern Immigrant Families” with Jorge Chvez, Marlana del Hierro and Omhagain Dayeen. Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, and Verity Hwang ‘19 (HDFS) presented “Creating an FLE Program in an Undergraduate Family Life Education Methodology Capstone Course.” Hamon and Susan Piland ’18 (HDFS) joined other colleagues in presenting a roundtable at the Affiliate Councils Workshop entitled “Mid-Atlantic Council—Over 25 Years of Insight—Engaging Students and Professionals Through the MACFR Annual Conference.” Hamon and Amanda Strong ‘18 (HDFS) also co-presented a paper entitled “Promoting Intergenerational Diversity Outside the College Classroom: The Elder Service Partner Program.”

Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, and Suzanne Smith (Washington State University, Vancouver) had their article “Family Science as Translational Science: A History of the Discipline” published in Family Relations, doi:10.1111/fare.12273. Hamon was asked to write the lead article for this special collection which examined the translational nature of family science.

Associate Professor of Music Dr. Damian Savarino recently made his singing debut with the Helena Symphony Orchestra (MT) under the direction of acclaimed conductor and Philadelphia native Maestro Allan Scott. Savarino performed the bass solos in Handel’s MESSIAH to a sold-out audience in the Cathedral of St. Helena. All of the contracted soloists, including Savarino, were members of Wade Artist Management in New York City.

PLCs will cover a range of relevant topics, from fostering international student success and self-assessment in preparation for term-tenure and promotion, to the new book, Diversity Matters. In collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Initiative, Learning Technology Services will also be offering a PLC on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Summer student employment

In order to assist students with obtaining summer on-campus employment and to facilitate earlier placement of students, the Student Employment Office will be holding a summer job fair on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018 from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Departments hiring for one or more new positions and/or replacement positions are required to attend the job fair unless all summer workers are already actively working for the department or are being rehired from the prior summer. Advise a J-Term break service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is pleased to offer employees an opportunity to participate in and advise a student service trip over J-Term Break 2018, which will take place Thursday, Feb. 1-Sunday, Feb. 4.

Advisors serve alongside students, assist student leaders in facilitation of reflection and devotions, and assist in any problem-solving that may arise. All costs are covered for advisors.

We are currently looking for advisors who may be interested in specifically serving with Children’s Bible Fellowship of New York (Carmel, New York), Priority One Ministries (Bronx, New York) and World Impact (Newark, New Jersey).

Children’s Bible Fellowship (Carmel, New York)
For nearly 75 years, CBFNY has worked with inner city, at-risk, and disabled youth through summer camp programs consisting of a variety of activities. Messiah students will have the opportunity to participate in outreach and discipleship ministries and will engage in team-building, evangelism and conflict resolution skills through an in-depth orientation that will introduce participants to the realities of urban life.

Priority 1 Ministries (Bronx, New York)
This service trip offers numerous ways to serve. Some students may be serving in a storehouse organizing food and other materials for distribution while others might be directly interacting with homeless communities. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work with children in an after school tutoring program.

World Impact (Newark, New Jersey)
World Impact is a Christian mission organization dedicated to ministering God’s love in the inner cities of America. Its purpose is to honor and glorify God and delight in Him in the inner cities by knowing God and making him known through evangelism, follow-up discipleship and planting culturally conducive churches.

Saturday Science Programs at The Oakes Museum of Natural History

The OMNH Curator Club Saturday Science Programs begin again in January. There are six activities including weather prediction, local birds and dangerous plants! Curator Club provides educational science enrichment for kids in grades 3-5 and CC2 is for kids in grades 6-8. Program attendees receive a membership card for free admission to The Oakes Museum of Natural History, a t-shirt and a certificate for three free admissions to bring a friend. Dean Curry, the first and only director of the College Honors Program (CHP) since its inception in 1997, has announced his planned retirement at the end of the 2017-2018 academic year.  We all wish Dean the best as he now plans for a well-deserved retirement at the end of this academic year.

Accounts payable holiday payment schedule

The final accounts payable payments in December will be issued on Dec. 21. Please plan by Dec. 12 for a payment on Dec. 21. It is important that all payments for services, honorariums, officials, etc. who performed during 2017 be paid in the 2017 calendar year to meet IRS tax reporting guidelines. Requisition to Check processing should be 1-2 weeks prior to your payment needs. This is to allow adequate time for vendor setup, IRS verification, approvals and invoice processing. Keep in mind any International supplier payments can take longer due to collection of required IRS forms and verification. Our first payment in 2018 is Jan. 4. Employee Christmas Luncheon, donation opportunity

In the spirit of Christmas, we are again offering employees the opportunity to give at our Employee Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 15.  The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria to the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico struck a chord in many of our hearts. We contacted several organizations helping with the relief effort on the island and were most inspired by the work of Mennonite Disaster Service, a local charity based in Lititz, Pennsylvania. They have made several visits to Puerto Rico since September and are doing much needed restoration work. One of their projects includes the rebuilding of a Christian, non-denominational school called Academia Menonita Betania. This school is located in a rural section of Puerto Rico and serves 127 students, three of whom are from the Mennonite community. The destruction to the school was vast – the roof was blown off and water damage was extensive throughout the lower floors. Furniture, books, supplies and all musical instruments were destroyed.

While oftentimes disaster relief efforts benefit from donated goods, the situation in Puerto Rico is particularly complex in the type of aid needed to rehabilitate the country. Most organizations working in-country are not able to handle a deluge of material donations and currently do not have the means of transportation, storage or people-power. Financial contributions, however, do allow organizations like Mennonite Disaster Service to provide on-the-ground food and housing materials as well as skilled volunteers in rebuilding homes and infrastructure.

Your support can fund the following:

$1 – A meal for a volunteer

$5 – One pound of drywall screws

$10 – Hammer

$18 – Bag of cement

$25 – Shovel

$37 – Support a volunteer for one day (travel, meals, lodging)

Donations will be collected prior to the luncheon, in the lobby outside Lottie Nelson Dining Room.  If paying by check, please make your check payable to Mennonite Disaster Service.  Be assured that all donations from Messiah College will go directly to the restoration of the school.

We are very appreciative of President’s Cabinet, who will match our collective donations of $1000 with an additional $500.

Four Messiah College students were winners in the Student Auditions of the Allegheny Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, which was recently held at Gettysburg College. Participants came from many colleges and universities in the central Pennsylvania area. Ian Bethmann won the Classical Senior Men division; Nathan Smith won the Classical Sophomore Men division; and Autumn Deck and Britney Yauger were winners in the Classical Junior Women division. Congratulations to these young and talented vocalists who are all students of Dr. Damian Savarino.

Accounts payable holiday payment schedule

The final accounts payable payments in December will be issued on Dec. 21. Please plan by Dec. 12 for a payment on Dec. 21. It is important that all payments for services, honorariums, officials, etc. who performed during 2017 be paid in the 2017 Calendar year to meet IRS tax reporting guidelines. Requisition to Check processing should be 1-2 weeks prior to your payment needs. This is to allow adequate time for vendor setup, IRS verification, approvals and invoice processing. Keep in mind any International supplier payments can take longer due to collection of required IRS forms and verification. Our first payment in 2018 is Jan. 4. Call for nominations: Class of 1964 Wittlinger Award

The Messiah College Class of 1964 established a student award in recognition of Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger, their class advisor, as part of their 50th Class Reunion celebration. A graduate of Messiah Junior College in 1935, Wittlinger returned to Messiah and served over 35 years as a teacher and visionary administrator.

The Class of 1964 Wittlinger Award seeks to honor students who demonstrate Wittlinger’s broad academic accomplishments, including his qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication, as they pursue and develop their own academic leadership skills.

Candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity and a commitment to service. All educators at Messiah are invited to nominate candidates since there is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.

To nominate a student, contact the director of the Sider Institute, Devin Manzullo-Thomas, at dcthomas@messiah.edu. Please include the student’s name, verification of junior status and a brief statement explaining why you feel the student merits the award. The final list of top candidates will be contacted to verify academic standing and interviewed by the selection committee. Once selected, the recipient will be presented with the Class of 1964 Wittlinger Award during the Wittlinger Chapel Series in February 2018. The award carries a $500 cash prize and a commemorative plaque.

Employee work-related travel policy

The Office of Human Resources and Compliance along with the Payroll Office have both recently received some inquiries regarding the College’s policy on employee work-related travel for staff (non-exempt) employees. 2nd Annual Faculty Write-In

The Writing Program, the Writing Center, and the Teaching and Learning Initiative would like to invite faculty members to be a part of the second annual Faculty Write-In at the Writing Center during the J-term 2018.

As hosts for the week, we will offer a private room in the Writing Center from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Jan. 8-12. There will be a half-hour break each day to share lunch and conversation with fellow participants. Three times throughout the week (beginning, middle and end), there will be specific opportunities provided to share brief updates on progress with colleagues.

From participants, we request a commitment to be present in the Writing Center from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. each day and to work specifically on a writing project (as opposed to data crunching or some other auxiliary writing). This opportunity is perfect for those who want to jump-start a writing project that may have been postponed.

We are excited about collaborating to help foster the writing culture at Messiah College and hope that faculty members will consider joining us in the Writing Center for quiet, sustenance and collegial support this J-term. Since space is limited, this opportunity will be available for the first seven people who contact Deana Baddorf at dbaddorf@messiah.edu to register.

Messiah Guitar Ensemble concert

The Messiah College Guitar Ensemble will present a concert on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the High Foundation Recital Hall. The program will feature Spanish, Appalachian and Christmas pieces, plus much more. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.

Employee Christmas Luncheon, donation opportunity

In the spirit of Christmas, we are again offering employees the opportunity to give at our Employee Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 15.  The devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, to the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico, struck a chord in many of our hearts. We contacted several organizations helping with the relief effort on the island and were most inspired by the work of Mennonite Disaster Service, a local charity based in Lititz, Pennsylvania. They have made several visits to Puerto Rico since September and are doing much needed restoration work. One of their projects includes the rebuilding of a Christian, non-denominational school called Academia Menonita Betania. This school is located in a rural section of Puerto Rico and serves 127 students, three of whom are from the Mennonite community. The destruction to the school was vast – the roof was blown off and water damage was extensive throughout the lower floors. Furniture, books, supplies and all musical instruments were destroyed.

While oftentimes disaster relief efforts benefit from donated goods, the situation in Puerto Rico is particularly complex in the type of aid needed to rehabilitate the country. Most organizations working in-country are not able to handle a deluge of material donations and currently do not have the means of transportation, storage or people-power. Financial contributions, however, do allow organizations like Mennonite Disaster Service to provide on-the-ground food and housing materials as well as skilled volunteers in rebuilding homes and infrastructure.

Your support can fund the following:

$1 – A meal for a volunteer

$5 – One pound of drywall screws

$10 – Hammer

$18 – Bag of cement

$25 – Shovel

$37 – Support a volunteer for one day (travel, meals, lodging)

Donations will be collected prior to the luncheon, in the lobby outside Lottie Nelson Dining Room.  If paying by check, please make your check payable to Mennonite Disaster Service.  Be assured that all donations from Messiah College will go directly to the restoration of the school.

We are very appreciative of President’s Cabinet, who will match our collective donations of $1000 with an additional $500.
