Advise a fall break service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is pleased to offer an opportunity for employees to participate in and advise a student service trip over Fall Break. Advisors serve alongside students, assist student leaders in facilitation of reflection and devotions, and assist in any problem-solving that may arise. All costs are covered for advisors. Messiah students will have the opportunity to participate in outreach and discipleship ministries and will engage in team-building, evangelism and conflict resolution skills through an in-depth orientation that will introduce participants to the realities of urban life. Priority One Ministries (Bronx, New York) Priority One partners with a number of inner-city organizations, churches and ministries who serve the disadvantaged of NYC. Volunteers connect with several of these organizations to directly impact and serve people, such as: A Breakfast and Lunch Ministry for the homeless; an after-school program for tutoring inner-city children; the World Vision Storehouse and more! 2017 Office of Marketing and Communications change in photography paradigm

 Effective Sept. 15, 2017, the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) is no longer resourced to support photography requests from individual campus departments or offices for their programs or events. OMC relies on a mix of professional and student photographers, prioritizing its resources for student recruitment marketing communications and editorial-specific photography for the Bridge alumni magazine and other institutional news channels.

Moving forward, departments who would like to arrange student or professional photography for their department-specific events may do so by scheduling and providing payment for those services directly with the photographer. To request a list of student and professional photographers that the College has used successfully for past events, please email photography@messiah.edu or kgarlinger@messiah.edu.

Continued services: 

• OMC will continue to provide the photography service of taking employee headshots and group shots of faculty and staff for campus communications. This service will be scheduled at multiple points throughout the year, and campus will be notified of these dates via the Intercom and mass email.

• OMC will continue to provide photography coverage for annual milestone events in the life of the College such as Welcome Week, Homecoming and Commencement (as these photos are used in the Bridge, social media and other OMC communications).

• Additionally, OMC’s professional photography and image library will continue to be made available for campus’ use in their own communications via the Cumulus digital image archive.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month. For the month of September, we are hosting the following networking receptions: Thurs., Sept. 21: 8- 8:45 p.m. (science majors), for alumni and students Mon., Sept. 25: Noon-12:45 p.m. (connecting alumni/students in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland/Columbus area ), alumni/seniors Fri., Sept. 29: Noon- 12:45 p.m. (Golden Grads), for alumni After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. Participants have the chance to share their wisdom, knowledge and life experiences, and to exchange career tips and build their professional network–all online, from any device. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced Danielle Chun ‘17 as a finalist for the 2017 AASHE Sustainability Awards in the undergraduate research category for her outstanding research in sustainability. Winners will be announced during the opening ceremony at the AASHE Conference & Expo in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 15. Finalists entries were judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category. “The Messiah College community is excited for Danielle and honored to have such a passionate student be able to carry out her interests in resolving pressing social and environmental concerns,” says Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability. He adds that with roughly 12 million food insecure families in the U.S. and 40 percent of our food being wasted, Danielle’s research is timely. “I imagine she will make an impact on other institutions as much as she has been on ours.” Danielle’s paper, “The Drivers Behind Edible Food Recovery Programs at Institutions of Higher Education” is the culmination of Danielle’s passion and concern for the environmental protection and community well-being during her pursuit of a degree in economic development (concentration: sustainability). Her research stems from a desire to see the work of food insecurity and food waste coupled to solve the pressing social and environmental challenge that it is. The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the following promotions:

Dr. Julie Gomboc-Turyan has been promoted to director of graduate curriculum and student services and assistant professor of education. Julie directly supports new graduate program development efforts as well as student services. She will be assisting with assessment plans, and partnering with others to ensure that graduate-level programs are in compliance with Accreditation, PDE and State Authorization regulations and standards.

Rebekah Ostby has been promoted to finance and projects manager for the School of Graduate Studies. Rebekah is responsible for all financial modeling, budget preparation and budget monitoring for the School of Graduate Studies. In addition she is the point person for the Winding Hill location and serves as the liaison to the property management group, Crabtree and Rohrbaugh.

The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to welcome the following three new employees: Leah Wagner: records specialist, School of Graduate Studies. Leah is a 2017 Messiah graduate and is the primary point-person for answering all incoming calls from both current and prospective students. She will be providing support to Graduate Registrar and Graduate Enrollment. Leah’s work-station is located at Winding hill. As an undergraduate student, Leah was a three-year work-study in the Registrar’s Office.

Halima Krugh: graduate enrollment counselor. Halima is a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois (BA in communications). Her experience includes project management, sales and public relations in the banking industry, the University of Illinois School of Music, as well as the Pennsylvania-Delaware District Council of The Assemblies of God. Most recently, she has been a development specialist at The Pennsylvania State University, Middletown. Halima will be recruiting graduate students for programs in business and leadership and nursing and will be located at Winding Hill.

Please welcome Lisa Brubaker as our clinical liaison placement coordinator in the Department of Nursing. Lisa will replace Nancy Frank, who is transitioning to assistant professor of nursing, clinical track. Lisa has a bachelor’s in behavioral science from Widener University and has experience as a substitute teacher in several area school districts. Lisa was the administrative assistant for the Messiah College Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Winding Hill. She and her husband live in Mechanicsburg with their five children. Additionally, Kristen Slabaugh, DNP, CRNP has recently transitioned from an undergraduate teaching role to a primary appointment in the School of Graduate Studies as the coordinator of the DNP program. Kristen is a Messiah College alum (BSN) and earned the MSN from Penn State University and the DNP from the University of South Alabama. Her areas of expertise and interest include women’s health, pediatrics and family practice.

Spouses and dependent children between the ages of 16-18 of benefit-eligible employees are able to receive a Messiah College family ID card from the Falcon Exchange. Moving into this new academic year, we are taking the opportunity to reset our family ID card system.  To do this, we will be inactivating all existing Family ID cards on Aug. 24. Once an ID card is inactivated, it will cease to work until our office reactivates it.

If your spouse and eligible child(ren) currently have family ID cards and you would like those cards to remain active:

• You should email Falconexchange@messiah.edu from your Messiah employee email account before Aug. 24 and ask that your family member’s ID cards remain active.
• Please include in your email the name of your spouse and the name of each of your dependent children between the ages of 16-18. All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tues., Aug. 22 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as the presentation of the president’s State of the College address. Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month.

For the month of August, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

• Thurs., Aug. 17: 8-9:30 p.m. (arts/music/entertainment majors), for alumni and students
• Mon., Aug. 21: noon-1:30 p.m. (connecting alumni/students in the Boston area ), alumni/seniors
• Fri., Aug. 25: noon- 1:30 p.m. (general alumni), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. Enhanced tuition reduction benefit

We are pleased to announce that the enhanced tuition reduction benefit has been expanded effective July 1. The new enhancement allows individuals who are not fully vested in the educational assistance benefit to opt into the program in order to receive up to an additional $3,000 per semester in tuition reduction funds for Tier 1 (Messiah College) only. Please note that employees who opt for the enhanced tuition assistance program will be limited to a lesser match on retirement contributions. The retirement plan currently provides the following benefits:

Opportunities to host international students

West Shore Christian Academy (WSCA) in Shiremanstown has about 20 international students who are journeying with us this academic year (2017-2018). Our students come from different parts of the world and we are in need of families to host these students. Host families receive a monthly stipend to assist with a student’s living expenses. This is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ. Will you prayerfully consider hosting one or two of the following students this year?

We are pleased to welcome Dereck Kamwesa, assistant director of admissions, multicultural recruitment, to the enrollment management team. He spent the last eleven years working at Taylor University, his alma mater. There he led domestic underrepresented and international student recruitment efforts and significantly contributed to the increase in diversity on Taylor’s campus. ID2ID, an initiative established by the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) in partnership with Penn State University, launches in July. This program pairs instructional designers across higher education institutions for collaborative engagement through a global Google community. This community will address real-world learning design challenges and opportunities in digital literacies, accessibility, assessment, open education and learning spaces. Messiah College faculty and staff receive free admission to the museum for themselves and their families on Saturday afternoons from 1- 5 p.m. The museum is home to a collection of Smithsonian quality African and North American mammals, birds, eggs, fish, seashells, minerals, insects and fossils. The Oakes Museum of Natural History is located in the Jordan Science Center. We hope to see you soon!

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni
The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month.

For the month of July, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

• Monday, July 24, noon-1:30 p.m. (Connecting alumni/students in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area), for alumni/seniors
• Friday, July 28, noon- 1:30 p.m. (Young Alumni), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Each chat is saved, making it simple to look back at the chat history, review notes, gather contact information and follow up. We hope that these connections lead to more in-person connections. Participants have the chance to share their wisdom, knowledge and life experiences, and to exchange career tips and build their professional network all online, from any device. Safety in work zones
Road construction is everywhere and that means the potential for more accidents. In 2014, a total of 669 work zone fatalities and over 31,000 work zone injuries occurred. Did you know that almost 85% of work zone fatalities were motorists, not workers? Here are some safety tips to keep you and your passengers safe in work zone areas:
Keep your headlights on in a work zone. It’s the law.

• Always wear your seatbelt. It’s the law.
• Slow down. Reduce your speed and obey the work zone speed limits.
• Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe following distance. The largest number of traffic accidents in work zones are rear-end collisions.
• Obey road signs and be alert for flaggers.
• Stay focused and watchful. Distracted driving is never good, but it is even more dangerous in work zones. Watch for brake lights of vehicles in front of you and be prepared to react. Expect the unexpected. Use extreme caution when driving through a work zone at night, even if work is not being conducted.
• Give yourself enough travel time so you are prepared for the unexpected delays and be patient. Avoid work zones. Whenever possible, travel alternate routes.
