On May 24, the application of the Department of Engineering to the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for a Messiah College SWE section was approved by the national organization. Congratulations to Dr. Emily Farrar, SWE-MC faculty advisor, student leadership and to the department for their dedication to achieving this long-time goal. A celebration for receiving the charter will be hosted by the department in the fall.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Mathematics Amanda (‘Mandy’) Lohss who was recently accepted as a Project NExT Fellow by the Mathematical Association of America. Project NExT (new experiences in teaching) is a national and competitive professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences. Fellows learn together about all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, finding exciting and interesting service opportunities, and participating in professional activities. As a fellow, Mandy will attend targeted professional development seminars at MAA national meetings in July 2017, January 2018, and July 2018. Mandy will be joining our faculty in fall 2017 in the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics.

The School of Science, Engineering and Health is pleased to welcome Holly Myers as administrative assistant. She is no stranger to Messiah College. She provided strong administrative support to the Department of Business and the International Business Institute for a decade before shifting in 2013 to administrative assistant to the graduate program in counseling. The President’s Office is pleased to announce that Kaitlyn Gehris has accepted the position of executive assistant for the Office of the President. She worked as the administrative assistant for the Office of Human Resources and Compliance for the past year after graduating from Messiah College in 2016. During her four years as a student, Kaitlyn worked as the President’s Office student assistant. Kaitlyn will be responsible for managing the president’s schedule, coordinating events, assisting with presentations and providing President’s Office support. Melissa Cohen will continue in her role as executive assistant to the President and assistant to the Board of Trustees. Melissa manages Board of Trustees communication and oversees the ongoing maintenance of the College’s official documents and records.

A Collaboratory team of seven students and five advisors returned on June 1 from Oaxaca, Mexico where they completed the construction of a pedestrian truss bridge for the community, working with Trigo y Miel (wheat and honey) through Forward Edge International. The team accomplished their two-week goal of getting the bridge up before the start of the rainy season, when flooding rains keeps some children from getting to the ministry meals. Brian Swartz, Andy Erikson, Scott Heisey, and adjunct Doug Stumpp (all ENGR) advised the team, which included engineering students Erika Boice, Erin Brenneman, Daniel Gallagher, Daniel Mewha, Connor Reyer, and Nathan Yeoman as well as music and Spanish major Hannah Snavely. Reminder: 2016-2017 performance appraisals due June 15

Performance appraisals for all administrative and staff employees, with the exception of employees in operations, are due on June 15. Operations will continue to review their employees during the month of their hiring anniversary. Customized appraisal forms have been established to better support the environment and requirements of different areas of the college. Other areas of the College may continue, this year, to use the standard Word appraisal forms found in the forms section of the Human Resources and Compliance website. All areas will be required to migrate to customized forms for the 2017-18 appraisal process. If you have any questions regarding the review process, please contact Kathy Castonguay, human resources.

Intercultural Office

Danielle Betteridge has completed her interim assignment as the assistant director for International Student Programs and will be moving to Zambia with her husband who works with CURE International. Luiza Cliver will be the new assistant director and will begin the position on July 1. Luiza studied as an international student from Brazil at Messiah College and completed her Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation at Trinity College in Dublin. Lydia Skulstad has accepted the part time position of Immigration Advisor/Designated School official. Lydia is an alum of Trinity Western University where she received her Master’s degree in TESOL. Lydia will be advising and supporting our F-1 students.

Residence LifeWe are pleased to announce that Beth Moshier will be the new residence director for Witmer Hall. Beth is a Messiah College alum, and she received her Master’s degree in community counseling from the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. Paula Hoffman will be moving from Witmer Hall to Bittner Hall as the new assistant director of Residence Life for the first year experience. We are sad to announce that Dave Downey, director of residence life, has submitted his resignation. He accepted a position as the associate pastor of community and mission at Hope Church in Oakdale, Minnesota. His last day at Messiah will be June 9. We are currently in the process of hiring his replacement. We are also very sorry to say goodbye to Kevin Williams, assistant director of residence life, Harrisburg and special interest housing. Kevin has accepted a position as the director of residence life and restorative justice coordinator at Bluffton University in Ohio. His last day on campus was May 26. We wish both Dave and Kevin well as they take their talents to new places. They both have had a significant impact on Student Affairs, our students and our community during their time here in Grantham.

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month. For the month of June, we are hosting the following networking receptions:

Thursday, June 15: 8- 9:30 p.m. (non profit/human services majors), for alumni and students
Monday, June 26: noon-1:30 p.m. (connecting alumni/students in the NYC area), alumni/seniors
Friday, June 30: noon- 1:30 p.m. (golden grads), for alumni

After signing in from home, office, smartphone or tablet, alumni/students will participate in one-on-one chats with other attendees. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing them to quickly meet new people, exchange contact information and walk away with several new connections they may not have had before. Messiah Dining Services Bakery was awarded 1st place honors in the 2nd Annual Harrisburg Baking Championship – Sweet Bites for Better Sight, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Harrisburg. Proceeds from the event benefit the development and installation of an eye clinic at the Hamilton Health Center. The award winning dessert created by Messiah’s Kathy Eberly and Beverly Spangler was a chocolate chip cookie dough tartlet with cream cheese and salted caramel, finished with a hand-piped chocolate garnish inspired by the rotary club logo. Congratulations!

On May 16, Dr. Gene Chase, professor emeritus of mathematics and computer science, spoke to a pastor’s conference at Valley Bible Church in Middlebury, Vermont on the topic Loving Gays. Dr. Chase gave two talks, each followed by discussion. His first talk focused on the social—encouraging pastors to welcome gays in their congregation, using the “belong, believe, behave” model, and encouraging them to have “centered-set” thinking instead of “bounded set” thinking (to borrow from Paul Hiebert’s insights). His second talk focused on the theological—encouraging them to agree with Jesus and St. Paul about what they say about sexual minorities.

Bringing back students early in August

If you plan to sponsor students for early arrival (before Sun., Aug. 27), please complete the online early arrival request form or if you have a large group of students, please contact housing@messiah.edu for a spreadsheet to fill out and return by Tues., Aug. 1. The earliest students may return this year is Mon., Aug. 14, but we ask that you bring your students back as late as possible. Please note that the meal plan for returning students will not be active until Fri., Aug. 25 at lunch. If you need meal cards for the students you are bringing back early, please make these arrangements through the Falcon Exchange. There is no charge for students to stay on campus. However, any additions received between Aug. 2 – Aug. 16 will be charged $25/person and between Aug. 17 – 30 will be charged $50/person.

Ted Davis, professor of the history of science, has been named to an advisory board at the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution. The first meeting of the board is May 23 in Washington, D.C., and the work will continue for two years.

We are pleased to announce that Kevin Ogden has accepted the position of director of the fitness center. Kevin is a Messiah College alum and currently works at Results Therapy and Fitness in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In his new role, Ogden will be managing the fitness center and working collaboratively with others to provide a holistic wellness program to the campus. He will begin this new position on June 12. As we anticipate the opening of the facility it is important for the community to note the following dates.

The fitness center will officially open on Tues., Aug. 29 (hours to be determined).
There will be an employee open house on Tues., Aug. 22, from 3-5 p.m.
The building dedication will be Thurs., Oct. 19.

We are excited about the Falcon Fitness Center and all it has to offer for both students and employees. Because we anticipate significant use, the facility will only be open for use by students, employees and their immediate families (age 16 and over). The College will assess usage following this initial year to determine whether external memberships will be considered. Access will be regulated by ID card, so everyone using the Falcon Fitness Center will need a current Messiah College ID card. The indoor walking track will continue being open for alumni and community members (no ID is needed for this). Later in the summer, more information will come out regarding classes and equipment training.

Matthew Farrar, assistant professor of physics, gave the keynote address at the American Association of Physics Teachers Central Pennsylvania Section (AAPT-CPS) meeting at the University of Scranton on April 21-22. The title of the presentation was “Seeing Anew: How Advances in Microscopy are Changing the Life Sciences.”

Associate Professor of Physics Abaz Kryemadhi and students Lindsey Barner ’17, Alex Roth ’17, Jacob Mohler ’18 and Andrew Grove ’18 spent spring break working at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, just outside Chicago, Illinois. They performed testing on a new dark matter detection prototype they have developed as part of a NASA funded project.

On March 7, Associate Professor of Physics Niklas Hellgren gave an invited talk at Lehigh University titled “Inside Intel – The Materials Science of Advanced Microprocessors”, as part of their Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology Seminar Series.

Procedure review: Messiah faculty is notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack at College Press. Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_materials

VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials, and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin. Move-in day volunteers needed

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is in need of employee volunteers to serve during Move-in day 2017. Volunteers are needed in 3-hour time slots to help move new students into their residence halls on Fri., Aug. 25. You can choose a shift : 8 -11 a.m., 10 a.m.-1p.m. or noon-3 p.m. You will also receive a boxed lunch and free t-shirt. Please know that lifting and walking stairs is required. SSC closes for the summer

On Thurs., May 24 at 5 p.m., the Sollenberger Sports Center will close for the summer to allow for the completion of construction. Access to the Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science offices will be available via the stairs near the wrestling room. The Athletics team and coach offices have been relocated to ECC basement or to Boyer 422. We appreciate and thank you for the ongoing patience everyone has shown during the construction. The project will be completed for the start of the new academic year.

Memorial 5k run and 1 mile walk/run

The annual Sam Mizrahi 5k run and one mile walk/run will be held at Northern High School on Sun., May 21 at 1 p.m. This low key walk/run supports a scholarship for a graduating senior and a camp for kids with diabetes. As we look to meet the future needs of the college, it is sometimes important to take a close look at how we structure our departments so they are better positioned to meet challenges. Over the past few months, we have been considering how to best structure our campus events leadership so that we can diversify how we manage the department. As a result, the following changes have been made in the leadership of the campus events department:

Scott Zeigler will move to the position of facility compliance/inventory control. He will be responsible for contracts as they relate to campus events (pest control, window washing, etc.). He will also be responsible for compliance in all three of the facility departments (maintenance, grounds and campus events). In that role, he will conduct regular compliance inspections, follow up with corrective actions, manage hazardous waste, universal waste, biohazard waste and trash/recycling.

George Blackburn has been promoted to the campus events manager. In his new role, he will be responsible for the overall daily operation and management of the campus events/laundry department. George will plan, organize and coordinate all of the campus events and laundry staff.

Jim Fackler has been promoted to the campus events assistant manager. In his new role, he will provide direction on the daylight shift central campus, campus events staff and provide management for the residence halls campus events staff.

Laura Price has been promoted to the campus events staff and event coordinator. In her new role, she will be responsible to work with human resources for interviewing and hiring for vacant positions in the department. Laura will also work closely with the Office of Conference and Event Services, be responsible to coordinate and organize the set-up and teardown of special events, and be responsible for classroom set-up and event support.

Theresa Day has been promoted to the campus events assistant manager for second and third shifts. She will be responsible for directing the second and third shift campus events cleaning schedules and event set-ups.

Dino Minoglio has been promoted to the second shift campus events supervisor. He will coordinate the campus events activities as they relate to cleaning and events that are held on the second shift.

Dwight Allshouse has been promoted to the third shift campus events supervisor. He will be responsible for supervising the third shift campus events staff and providing support to the cleaning of our central campus buildings.

Heidi Shultz has moved to the supervisor of campus events in the residence halls. She will be responsible for providing direction to the campus events residence hall staff. She will also coordinate and provide set-ups for events that are held in the residence halls and provide support in the summer months for the conference guest that stay in our student housing buildings.

Over the summer months, this leadership team will be working together to streamline processes and services in the department. If you have work that requires a staff member to complete for you, we request that you send in a work order or call ext. 6011. Michael True, senior associate in the Career and Professional Development Center, presented a keynote on May 9 to the Penn State University Career Development Professionals Conference at University Park on the topic “Internships: The Current State in Higher Education, Trends, and Future Thoughts.” He also presented a two hour workshop at the Cooperative Education and Internship Association annual conference in April.

This year, this website will also provide a link to the College’s first live video stream of the Commencement ceremony. Members of the Community of Educators should have already received information from the Provost’s Office regarding their participation in Commencement weekend. Faculty, staff and administrators who are participating in the Commencement ceremony itself should have received an email memo regarding their role in the ceremony from the Commencement Committee.

Baccalaureate service/reception parking

Prior to the Baccalaureate service and reception, traffic personnel will direct guests to designated parking areas on campus. College employees do not receive reserved parking for Baccalaureate.
The Department of Safety asks that all guests walk from where traffic control personnel direct you to park. (Shuttle service is not provided Friday evening.)
To avoid safety hazards, please do not stop in the middle of the roadway to drop off your party. If you have questions regarding parking or drop-off locations for guests with a disability, please contact Events Officer Liz Williams at ext. 3984.

Members of the Community of Educators and other employees who are marching in the processional or participating in the Commencement ceremony will receive a reserved parking pass via campus mail. Employees MUST show their parking pass to traffic control personnel upon entering campus to be directed to their designated reserved parking areas. All other employees who will be working the Commencement ceremony should ask their supervisor where their designated parking area will be that day.
Members of the COE and other employees coming to campus that morning should use the Mill Road/South Entrance in order to avoid congestion with visitor traffic.
Due to the significantly increased volume of traffic on campus for Commencement, the Department of Safety strongly encourages all employees to arrive on campus no later than 8:15 a.m. in order to alleviate being delayed in traffic, and to assist that they are directed to their reserved parking areas on campus. It is also extremely important to follow all parking direction and instruction from safety personnel while entering and leaving campus, as traffic conditions can change quickly and officers are not able to stop traffic flow to have conversation with individual drivers.
An important reminder—employees are not permitted to schedule vendor visits, pick-ups or deliveries on the day of Commencement as it interferes with the increased and altered traffic flow on campus that day.

Guest parking

A shuttle service will transport all other guests between their parking areas and the athletic complex both before and after the Commencement ceremony. Read additional details on guest and disability parking.

Messiah College’s fiscal year 2017 (FY17) ends June 30. The attached end of fiscal year processing checklist and calendar are provided to support department efforts to record charges in the appropriate fiscal year. Departments are requested to begin review of FY17 financial activity now and submit journal voucher/transfer requests to accounting@messiah.edu. Move-in day volunteers needed

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs is in need of employee volunteers to serve during Move-in day 2017. Volunteers are needed in 3-hour time slots to help move new students into their residence halls on Friday, Aug. 25. You can choose a shift : 8 -11 a.m., 10a.m.-1p.m. or noon-3 p.m. You will also receive a boxed lunch and free t-shirt. Please know that lifting and walking stairs is required. If you are interested and available to serve in this capacity, please contact Sheryl Scaramuzzino at silp@messiah.edu with your availability for that day and t-shirt size by May 31. Last season’s Messiah College production of THE TENDER LAND (Copland) received 2nd Place (tie) in the American Prize Opera Production Competition. The production was produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance and directed by Dr. Damian Savarino (music and stage) and Dr. Timothy Dixon (conductor). Other institutions with placing productions were The University of Michigan (1st place), The University of South Dakota (2nd place tie) and SUNY Purchase (3rd place). Congratulations to Bill Althoff, College Press and postal services production manager, who successfully achieved his USPS Mailpiece Design Professional certification. Bill is now certified to review designed publications intended for mailing and render judgments in regards to USPS standards. The course Bill completed included topics such as postal addressing standards, classes of mail and processing categories, barcode formats, reply mail, and designing for automation.

Tim Knapp will resign his role as instructional designer on May 19. Tim helped lead our Office 365 roll out, providing support to offices considering a transition to the cloud, and training to the campus for specific applications. He was also deeply invested with students and faculty in their use of Ensemble and helped lead our current transition from Adobe Connect to Zoom. He accomplished all of this while at the same time providing instructional design leadership to the graduate and undergraduate faculty. Tim’s central mission has always been to implement emerging technologies in line with the College’s mission and support learning processes across the campus. He will be missed. Please take the opportunity between now and May 19 to wish him well.

Leadercast Simulcast May 5

Messiah College Graduate Program in Business and Leadership is partnering with Suasion LLC to host a live simulcast of the nationally renowned Leadercast event on May 5 at Central Penn College. We would like to offer any Messiah College graduate student, faculty or staff member who is interested in attending this event a discounted group rate of $85 for the Simulcast or $93.75 for the simulcast and the post event at Messiah. P-Card update

In order to provide a more seamless coordination of purchasing services, administration of the P-Card program will move to Procurement Services beginning May 1. Stephanie Sechrist will assume the role of P-Card administrator. Please continue to use the dedicated P-Card email, pcard@messiah.edu and telephone extension, ext. 2211, so we can respond to your P-Card needs in the most time effective manner. Tracy Thomas will continue in her position as administrative assistant to the vice president for finance and planning, David Walker.

Important reminder to faculty

Procedure review: Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by Diane Hunsinger approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your coursepack at College Press. Beth Transue ’93, librarian/instruction coordinator, delivered a presentation about China titled “Armchair Travel: Heading East: A Traveler’s Perspective on China” at the Simpson Public Library, Cumberland County Library System, on April 19. She shared her experiences from the 2016 cross-cultural course to China and her 2-week solo trip to Beijing in 2014. She discussed visiting the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, hutongs, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and her perspectives on daily travel within China.

Last season’s Messiah College production of THE TENDER LAND (Copland) received 2nd Place (tie) in the American Prize Opera Production Competition. The production was produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance and directed by Dr. Damian Savarino (music and stage) and Dr. Timothy Dixon (conductor). Other institutions with placing productions were The University of Michigan (1st Place), The University of South Dakota (2nd Place tie) and SUNY Purchase (3rd Place). Dr. Eric Rawson, professor of exercise science and chair of the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science, will be an invited guest and speaker at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Consensus Meeting on Dietary Supplements in Lausanne, Switzerland May 3-5. Rawson will present research and provide input into the development of an IOC Expert Statement on dietary supplements.

Need a print project for fall?

As we near the end of the academic year, we ask that you think about the promotional pieces you will need before classes start in the fall. Most projects initiated within the Office of Marketing and Communications reach an off campus audience of 200 or more recipients, and include things like postcards, newsletters, self-mailers and event invitations. In addition, but not limited to, OMC designs billboards, on-campus marquees and site marketing, all seen by prospective students. A minimum of five weeks is requested from the time initial content is submitted to OMC. Mennonite Central Committee and Sustainability partnership

Do you have unused or unwanted items in your house you’ve been meaning to donate?!? Bring them to campus to donate them to Mennonite Central Committee May 4 – 13. Find one of the four trailers on campus near the residence halls, which will be opened from 10 a.m. – 7p.m. during finals and move out week. Please do not bring items to the Office of Sustainability. To help reduce the amount of waste generated on campus during the week of move out, the Office of Sustainability and Residence Life partnered with MCC to recover all those resources that are otherwise trashed. Items collected include: clothing (wearable and unwearable); household items (small appliances, kitchen utensils, etc.); cardboard, books, paper, magazines; shoes; electronics; unopened food; unopened hygiene products; and more! School of Science, Engineering and Health Symposium

The 14th Annual Symposium of the School of Science, Engineering and Health will be held on Friday, April 28 in Frey, Jordan and Kline academic buildings. More than 150 students from within the school will participate in oral and poster presentations in sessions that are scheduled throughout the day. Celebrate the work, creativity and innovation reflected in the rich and diverse variety of oral and poster presentations. The Department of Education hosts Erika Hufford’s student honors presentation

On Thursday, April 27, Erika Hufford will present her research entitled, “Hierarchy of Skills for Effective Math Intervention.” Hufford’s project focuses on how curriculum, instruction and assessment are connected for students who struggle with math concepts. She conducted a two-part project during the course of this past year. First, she researched and determined a hierarchy of math skills that students should have mastered by the end of third grade. Second, she designed interventions to align with each of the desired skills that could be implemented for struggling students. The presentation will be held in Boyer 432, from 4:30-5:30 pm. There will be refreshments!

Please join us on Wed., May 3 as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. We thought it might be helpful to share how we determine who has reached service milestones, as we have not included this information recently in the Intercom.

Employees who meet the following criteria are recognized:

Full-time and part-time employees
Employees who will reach a significant service year milestone (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) on or before Sept. 15 of that year.
- Employees who are re-hired by the College will be credited with service years earned prior to an approved break in service.
- Temporary or occasional assignments are not considered when calculating service years.

This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. Dr. Tiffani Worthy, instructor in the graduate program in business and leadership, was a recently recognized honoree in the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of the top 40 under 40. The 40 under 40 program aims to identify and recognize current and future leaders in various industries and in the community (Philadelphia Business Journal). The Business Journal received over 400 nominations this year, setting a new record. In addition to teaching at Messiah College, Worthy is actively engaged in leading her non-profit All Things Are Possible (ATAP) Foundation, as well as serving as an executive in training and development for one of the largest family-owned businesses in the nation. The Teaching and Learning Initiative is pleased to announce that Cynthia Wells will be continuing on as a teaching and learning fellow for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. Wells is associate professor of higher education and director of The Ernest L. Boyer Center at Messiah College. Her graduate level teaching has focused on the history and philosophy of higher education, equity issues and curriculum. She has also taught undergraduate courses within the general education curriculum. Her range of teaching experiences and research interests will continue to be an asset in her role as teaching and learning fellow. Wells will continue working with Amy Ginck and Jennifer Fisler to support excellent teaching at Messiah College.

Key Services reminder

This is a reminder from Key Servicesthat any keys you hold and no longer need should be returned to Key Services in the Lenhert Maintenance building before the end of the spring semester so they can be removed from your name/responsibility. The Lenhert front office is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Also, if you are a supervisor to students in work study positions, internships, etc., please remind your students that their keys need to be returned prior to their departure for summer (no later than May 12). It is the supervisor’s responsibility to ensure the students turn in their keys before leaving campus. Failure to do so will result in the department being charged the associated fines. Any keys, regardless of whether they are held by employees or students, are subject to a minimum $75 fee per key if they are not returned and/or lost. School of the Humanities summer academic camps

This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold three academic camps. New this year is FaithWorks@MessiahCollege, which is a unique summer experience connecting faith and service. This camp will be held on July 16 – July 22 and is open to high school students. Their website is http://www.messiah.edu/info/22711/faithworks.

The Young Filmmakers Workshop was a huge success last year and we only have five more openings for this year! The dates are June 25-29. This camp will provide college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. For the sixth year, we will have the Young Writers Workshop. This workshop will be held July 16- 20 and offers intensive courses in creative writing taught by published faculty and writers. OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS

VISTA at Messiah College

Urban early childhood education and community engagement with a purpose! Work to develop parent connections and programs with the intention of improving students’ academic achievement.

The purpose of this project is to improve early childhood school readiness by building the capacity of community partners to deliver educational programs that effectively reach parents and caregivers. During a three-year period, this project will resource and equip parents with the knowledge and skills needed to support their student’s academic efforts through the establishment of an early childhood education program and curriculum for school readiness. Research demonstrates that as barriers to school readiness are broken down, the likelihood increases for students to escape poverty through improved academic achievement, which better positions students on a pathway to higher education.

This project will build the capacity of community organizations (e.g. Salvation Army) to effectively reach parents and caregivers of K-4 children at Downey Elementary School, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In 2016-2017 Downey served 405 K-4 students, of which 99.5 percent were from economically, disadvantaged families. By directing educational programming to parents and caregivers, new opportunities will be created for parents to meet around shared values (e.g. improving opportunities for their children to succeed). When these shared values are celebrated, and access to new knowledge and resources are created it can inspire and empower parents to work together, which can result in a collective social power that forms bonds within the community, changing the climate around the school.

What will the VISTA do?

The VISTA will familiarize themselves with the community and community partners to gain a better understanding of the current landscape of parental engagement. Following this, the VISTA will meet with the Parent Organization to access community needs and to continue identifying parental needs that are connected to the child’s academic achievement in order to develop the appropriate parental programming.

The VISTA will work with community partners, the Salvation Army, and Messiah College to deliver a series of school readiness workshops for Downey parents during the fall of 2017 and begin developing an orientation program for the 2018 school year. The VISTA will continue to create a plan for the sustainability of the programming by developing the framework for future workshops/orientation programs and preparing parent leaders and community partners to assume programming responsibilities.

Finally, the VISTA will celebrate shared values among parents to improve student achievement and inspire parents to become more involved in the school readiness of their children.

Housing is provided along with a small meal allowance.

On April 5, The Association of College and University Printers awarded College Press its 2017 Impression Award for Green Service. This award honors the college or university print shop whose green initiatives have most demonstrated the importance of environmental stewardship. Pete Powers, dean of the School of the Humanities; Jean Corey, chair of the Department of English; and Kerry Hasler-Brooks, assistant professor of English attended the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Memphis, Tennessee this past weekend. Along with them, four students from the School of the Humanities—Hannah Eckstrom, Kaitlin Wingert, Ryan Gephart and Joel Johnson—presented their undergraduate research projects. Johnson presented “Notes of a Non-Native Son”; Eckstrom presented ” The Holistic Community Leadership of African American Educators in Harrisburg, PA from 1877 to 1954″; Wingert presented “The Athlete’s Journal: Composition Theory in the Arena of Competitive Sport”; and Gephart presented “An Analysis of Mass Incarceration Towards a Reformed Penology.” Congratulations to these students for the fine work they have done this year, and thanks to their faculty mentors across the School of the Humanities who have supported them.

A panel of accomplished women business leaders shared from their significant experience to illuminate important workplace issues and highlight the unique impact women make in the world of business. Chemistry departmental honors defenses

Elliot Rossomme, senior chemistry ACS certified major, will present his departmental honors defense on April 18 at 4 p.m. in Kline 327. His project, entitled “Electrooptical dynamics of 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl mounted on ZnSe functionalized with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers” is the result of research performed under the mentorship of Dr. Alison Noble. Free screening of “Paper Tigers” on April 18

The Messiah College Teacher Education Program and the Messiah College Education Association invite you to a free screening of “Paper Tigers,” a powerful documentary film about trauma-informed education, April 18 from 7-9:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema. A short time of discussion will follow. “Paper Tigers” explores the impact of adverse childhood experiences and toxic
stress on struggling teens. The film follows a year in the life of Lincoln High Alternative School.
After radically changing its approach to disciplining students, the school saw dramatic results and has become a promising model of how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease through the practice of trauma-informed educational strategies. Mennonite Central Committee and Sustainability partnership

Do you have unused or unwanted items in your house you’ve been meaning to donate?!? Bring them to campus
to donate them to Mennonite Central Committee between May 4 and May 13. Find one of the four trailers on
campus near the residence halls, which will be opened from 10 a.m.- 7p.m. during finals and move out week.
Please do not bring items to the Office of Sustainability. To help reduce the amount of waste generated on
campus during the week of move out, the Office of Sustainability and Residence Life partnered with MCC
to recover all those resources that are otherwise trashed. Items collected include: Clothing (wearable and unwearable); household items (small appliances, kitchen utensils, etc.); cardboard, books, paper, magazines;
shoes; electronics; unopened food; unopened hygiene products; and more! All donations will benefit MCC’s development,
relief, and missions work around the world. Questions can be directed to sustainability@messiah.edu or by calling ext. 4785.

Join us May 3 at the Employee Recognition Reception

Please join us on Wed., May 3, as we gather to celebrate the commitment of those employees who have reached significant service milestones. This year’s Employee Recognition Reception will be held from 10 – 11:30 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. We will have a time of refreshments and fellowship until 10:20 a.m., accompanied by The Grantham Brass Project. Conveying of awards will follow. In addition to recognizing service milestones, we will also be announcing the recipients of the Pride in Performance, the Presidental Awards, and the Team Falcon Award. Wellness Day: Thursday, April 27

We hope you will plan now to participate in Wellness Day events on Thurs., April 27. There will be events happening outside of Lottie from 2-6 p.m., including 9-square in the air, a GaGa ball pit, Spikeball, Pilates, POUND, and music by a Messiah Guitar Ensemble beginning at 4:45 p.m. Indoors, from 2-5 p.m., will be our Wellness Fair in Brubaker featuring valuable health information as well as numerous health screenings. Everything is free. Attendees will also qualify for our prize drawings!

Bill Strausbaugh, vice president for information systems/associate provost, was asked by Middle States to be part of a two-person team to review innovative start-up proposals submitted to the federal EQUIP program. In 2015, the federal Department of Education launched the Educational Quality through Innovative Partnerships (EQUIP) experiment to provide low-income students with access to new models of education and training. Federal financial aid resources are made available to students in these programs. The Department of Education works with regional accrediting agencies to approve such proposals. One of the programs Bill reviewed involves a partnership between Wilmington University (a regionally accredited university), Zip Code (an organization that trains programmers), and Hacker Rank (an organization that evaluates programmer’s abilities). Students learn programming skills to begin earning an income and then bachelor’s degree options are made available to them through the university.

Each student presented his or her research conducted at Messiah, and three of the faculty members presented his or her scholarship at a peer-reviewed session.

Tailgating for Jobs

The Tailgating for Jobs event will be held Wed., April 19 from 4-6 p.m. in the visitor’s parking lot in front of Eisenhower. The Career and Professional Development Center is hosting this first-ever event which features over 35 employers. These employers will be recruiting students for jobs and internships in a casual and fun atmosphere. Freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Please encourage your students to attend. Educators are welcomed.

President’s “open door” day

President Phipps will host an ”open door” day on Thurs., April 27 from 1 -4 p.m. to meet individually with students and employees on topics that are important to them. This will take place in the president’s office on the second floor of Old Main. A sign-in sheet will be located in Old Main room 206 starting at 1 p.m. on April 27.

Irish comedy “The Shaughraun” continues this weekend

Experience the joys of a classic Irish comedy! Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present “The Shaughraun,” continuing its run this weekend in Miller Theater. Set against the secret Fenian Uprising in Ireland in 1866, “The Shaughraun” is the comic masterpiece of Ireland’s undisputed master of melodrama. Desperate forbidden passions! Damsels in distress! Mustached villains! And a charismatic hero! All conspire for a delightful Irish romp. “The Shaughraun” runs March 30-April 2 and April 6-9. Clowning around at the Special Olympics

Announcing the promotion of Sarah Wade

Sarah Wade has been promoted to associate vice president for enrollment management and will assume her new title and responsibilities on Mon., April 3. This role developed out of a desire to address succession planning and leadership development at Messiah College and within enrollment management. In addition to providing dynamic leadership and innovation in her current role, Sarah has participated in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities Leadership Development Institute, a program for aspiring senior leaders within the CCCU. She will maintain current reporting lines for international and transfer admissions and add new responsibilities related to campus visits and events, multicultural recruitment and CRM strategy. Payroll office welcomes new payroll coordinator

The Payroll Office would like to announce the arrival of our newest team member, Cindy Briel, who started as the new payroll coordinator on March 31. She replaces Missy Huntington who has moved to the accounting analyst role. Cindy will provide oversight for the day-to-day payroll functions. She will be responsible for tax payments, reconciliations and filings as well as W-2s. She will also provide joint leadership to payroll projects and compliance-related items.

New collaboratory program manager

Angela Hare, dean of science, engineering and health, and Doug Flemmens, Collaboratory director, are very pleased to announce that Lori Zimmerman has accepted the position of Collaboratory program manager, effective May 15. Before coming to work at Messiah, Lori and her husband Tim were missionaries with Brethren in Christ World Missions in Honduras. For almost a decade, Lori has not only been the administrative assistant for the School of Science, Engineering and Health, she has also taken a course every semester including summers, and on May 13, she will receive her Messiah B.A. in business administration. Lori is highly qualified for the program manager position; please join us in congratulating her!

Collaboratory director announced

Angela Hare, dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Health, is pleased to announce that Doug Flemmens will assume the role of director of the Collaboratory for Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research, effective July 2017. Doug has been serving as the Interim Collaboratory Director since July 2016. Educated in mechanical engineering (B.S., Penn State) and manufacturing systems engineering (M.S., Lehigh) and with international management experience, Doug brings significant skill, insight and leadership to a complex interdisciplinary organization. We are very pleased to have him continuing with the Collaboratory!

Online networking opportunity for students and alumni

The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is excited to announce that we will be hosting three monthly Brazen events to connect alumni with alumni and to connect alumni with our students. Brazen is an online, cloud-based platform that makes it easy and fun for people to participate through text-based chats. The three virtual events will be broken down by industry, geography and age, and will rotate each month. For the month of April, we are hosting the following networking receptions:
