Messiah cybersecurity competition team wins third place!

On Jan. 20, the Messiah University cybersecurity competition team placed 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition! They will be advancing to compete in the regional competition in March.

The competition was an “inherit and defend” style event. Teams were given a simulated business production environment and had to harden the systems quickly before the attackers tried to break in. In addition to securing systems the team functioned as a legitimate business, responding to tasks from the C-suite and keeping all systems online. Throughout the competition the most impressive thing that Messiah’s teams did well was remain calm under pressure and communicated with each other.

This was Messiah University’s second year participating in the competition. The senior team was comprised of Raymond Truex (captain), Grace Taylor, Aidan Hubley, Carolina Hatch, Brandan Snook, and Christopher Copeland. The first-year team was comprised of Eli Kalmbacher (captain), Austin King, Aiden Morris, and Ryan Scannell. Both teams were coached by David Bibighaus.

Placing 3rd out of 24 teams is an exciting achievement for the team. They are excited to return to the regionals in March for the second year in a row and will continue preparing for the next competition.

A note of thanks

I wanted to thank each of you who were so kind by sending my mom a card at Christmas. She was so tickled to get so many cards (over 30). I was there the one day when the employee came in to give her the mail, she said “Shirley OMG you keep getting so many cards”, and my mom just smiled. She didn’t recognize anyone (dementia), but each time she opened one she would just smile, she had them all over her room. So to each of you who showed her this kindness, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s not always the gift you give, but the love and care with something as simple as a card can bring to someone. Just look at that smile on her face. Thank you and may God bless each and every one of you. – Stacy and her mom

Associate Professor of Marketing Keith Quesenberry had an article published in Entrepreneur Online titled, “Want to Improve Your Brand’s Storytelling? Shift Your POV to Tell a Better Narrative. Also, Quesenberry’s Brand Storytelling textbook received a very favorable review in the Journal of Advertising Education by professors at Iowa State University, saying “Brand Storytelling is the first textbook to provide a full-course foundation on the psychology, philosophy, and practice of story-based marketing communication. The textbook targets advertising, public relations, and marketing students with an integrated marketing communications (IMC) framework. Brand Storytelling provides a deep dive into the research and theory behind the use of stories for commercial communications, as well as examples of story use on digital and legacy-media platforms.”

Christmas card for my mom. Some of you may know me, most probably not. But with the Christmas season approaching fast, I wanted to do something special for my mom. My mom is 89 years old, and has dementia, about 2 months ago we had to put her into a nursing home. She wants to go to “her” home, but for her own safety it was a decision my brothers and I had to make. Mom loves getting cards, and I thought it would be nice that she gets some “extra” Christmas cards, she loves looking at them for hours on end. It would make her so happy, if you have the time, to send her a Christmas card and make her very happy for the Christmas holiday.

WANTED

Her name and address –
Mrs. Shirley Sinclair

Amorosa Wellness at York

2830 Carol Road

Room 28

East York, PA 17402

Thank you and May God bless you and your families this Christmas season. Stacy Portko

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

Titus 3:4-6

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Joanna Behm, EdD, OTR/L, assistant professor of occupational therapy, led a technology roundtable at the 2023 AOTA Education Summit in Denver, Colorado this month. She discussed the multiscene unfolding case study simulation involving interdisciplinary health care students and faculty at the graduate and undergraduate levels that Messiah’s IPE Committee organizes every summer and how the event addresses collaboration, communication and role appreciation across health care disciplines.

Charlene Lane, department chair and program director of social work, has accepted the position as the director of the Office of Aging to pursue her passion for serving the older vulnerable population. Charlene has significantly contributed to the Messiah community in the past six years, serving as a faculty development fellow and inspiring her colleagues to grow in inclusivity and belonging. She is well-loved by her colleagues and students. Charlene invested in countless students and embodied the qualities of a holistic educator. She challenges students to use their intellectual abilities to serve the marginalized and loves as Jesus loves. Lane will continue to serve as an adjunct professor in the Department of Social Work and connect with the Messiah community. Please join the interim dean of the School of Arts, Culture and Society in thanking Charlene and welcoming Ling Dinse as the incoming chair of the social work department.

I am pleased to announce that Cynthia Wells’ leadership role in faculty development will continue with the title of associate dean of faculty development and that alongside this change, Leah Clarke’s title will become director of teaching and learning. This adjustment is reflective of the historic designations of these two roles and expresses well their contributions in developing and delivering university-wide opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and co-curricular educators in coordination with the Office of the Provost. This work takes place within an integrated Office of Faculty Development that includes The Ernest L. Boyer Center and delivers key initiatives including New Educator Orientation, Provost’s Seminar, Teaching and Learning workshops, mentoring programs, consultations, as well as coordination of COE Retreat, May Development Week, and Educator In-Service Day. Please join us in expressing appreciation to Leah and Cynthia for their ongoing contributions to educators at Messiah University.

Senior Honors Presentation-Allie Mast

Join us on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. in Boyer 235 as senior Politics and International Relations major Allie Mast delivers her Senior Honors Presentation, “The Bork Nomination and Degradation of Debate.” Mast will present her research on the 1987 failed nomination of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court. Mast contends that this nomination marked the prologue to a new era of partisan rancor and polarization, yet she argues, the debate during the Bork nomination stands out as far more committed to constitutional theory than the nominations that have followed.

Advent Scripture reading and song service

The honors program hosts an Advent Scripture and song service on Monday, Dec. 4 from 7-8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. All are invited to listen to passages read from the Old and New Testaments on the theme of Advent and to sing Advent carols together, accompanied by instrumentalists from the Messiah community.
