Miller Theater, Climenhaga Building

As the Civil Rights movement is brewing, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist state senator and a no-nonsense state librarian in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. Meanwhile, the story of two childhood friends — an African American man and a woman of white privilege, reunited in adulthood — provides a private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak and hope. Inspired by true events.

Estimated run time: 2 hours, including one 15-minute intermission

Tickets: $10—adults; $7—MU students (w/ID), MU employees (w/ID), youth (under 18) and and seniors (60+)

Seed Library Lunch and Learn

Join us on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Library Athenaeum for a lunch and learn with Mt. Airy Orchards and a chance to sample different varieties of apples. Please remember to bring your own lunch and register at the following link: https://forms.gle/XRX9w7gfAwnGjJ4r8

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own an orchard? A pretty easy job, right? Yes, you must prune your trees, and mow occasionally throughout the spring and summer. But between these necessary jobs, there is plenty of down time to relax by the pool and watch the fruit grow. Fall is a bit busier; the apples must be picked. But blessed winter! During those long, cold, and dark months, there is ample time to nap and read books.

If any of this was true, there would be more farmers in the world! Farming is a labor intensive, year-around, relentless profession. Join us on November 8 to discover what it takes to run Mt. Airy Orchards, located just minutes from the Messiah Campus. Mt. Airy grows and sells multiple varieties of berries, peaches, plums, and apples. They also successfully operate a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA), an Agritourism business including summer programs for children, a play area with a fall corn maze, pick your own fruit, homemade baked goods, a retail store, ice cream and homemade meals, local artisan’s talents, and the list continues! We will walk through a typical year and the challenges each season offers. As a bonus, Mt. Airy grows over 20 different varieties of apples, several of which will be available for sampling! Join us to discover your new favorite apple!

New admissions counselors

The Office of Admissions is excited to welcome two new staff members to our team.

During his time at Messiah, John spent three years working as a student in the undergraduate admissions office that included time both as an office worker and as a telecounselor. Most recently, he served the last two years at Eastern University as a senior admissions counselor and is thrilled to bring those skills back to his alma mater.

Tania Tirado Colon, admissions counselor for Latino student recruitment: Tania comes to us as a native of Puerto Rico who moved her family to Pennsylvania in 2020. She holds a B.A. music education and an M.A. educational leadership. Her wealth of experience as an educator and life-coach, as well as a passion for serving the Latino community, make her a perfect fit for our team.

Please see the attached PDF for a cheat sheet of all admissions counselors and their territories.

Call for Nominations

All educators at Messiah University are invited to nominate candidates for the
Class of 1964 Wittlinger Prize and the Boyer Legacy Award.

These two awards are presented annually by the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies and the Ernest L. Boyer Center, respectively, to recognize student leaders who embody particular ideals. The Wittlinger Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger’s (Class of 1935) qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication. Similarly, the Boyer Legacy Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Ernest L. Boyer’s (Class of 1948) ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.

Eligible candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity, and a commitment to service. There is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.

Nominations should include the student’s name and a brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining why the student merits the honor. Students may be nominated for either or both awards.

Both awards carry a cash prize of $1,500 each.

The Wittlinger Award recipient will be recognized during the 2024 Wittlinger Chapel Series; the Boyer Award recipient will be recognized at the Fall 2024 Teacher Education/Boyer Center Awards Ceremony.

Please submit nominations and direct questions to Jon Stuckey (jstuckey@messiah.edu) no later than December 1.

Tickets: $10—Adults; $7—MU students (w/ID), MU employees (w/ID), youth (under 18) and & seniors (60+)

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

We’re talking about phishing over at the Cybersecurity Education program blog this week. Phishing occurs when a criminal poses as a trustworthy organization or person and tries to trick you into clicking a link or opening an attachment. They do this in order to steal your personal information or infect your device.

So, how do we recognize phishing? And what do we do if we’ve received a phishing message?

Read this week’s post to find out! Plus, we’ve got a video of a hacker in action, and a quiz that tests your ability to spot a phishing email (it’s tough!). Come on over >>>

Joanna Behm, EdD, MS, OTR/L, COMT, CDP, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with alumna Amelia Phung ’23, presented their poster titled, “Experiences of Occupational Therapy Students with Disabilities” at the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference in Pittsburgh on Sept. 29. This study explored the experiences of 86 students with disabilities in OT school regarding accommodations. Joanna Behm, along with alumni Megan Hamilton ’21 and ’23 and Madeleine Skolka ’20 and ’23, also presented their poster titled, “Perceived Social and Leisure Engagement Among Individuals with POTS.” Individuals with energy-limiting conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) experience diminished ability to participate in all areas of occupation. This study examined the leisure and social engagement of those with POTS. Results indicate low satisfaction in these valued occupations.

______

Kimberly Duetsch, OTD, OTR/L, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with alumni Amanda Weikert ’23 and Madeline Senft ’23, presented their poster titled, “Student Perspectives on Coping Strategies and Burnout Education” at the same POTA conference in Pittsburgh. A survey of healthcare students revealed that students had varied experiences in how their healthcare programs address burnout and stress. Qualitative analysis revealed that students desire implementation of burnout prevention and stress management strategies into the curriculum.

______

Jim Foster, OTD, MS, OTR/L, CBIS, assistant professor of occupational therapy, along with Mary Zadnik, presented their poster titled, “Addressing Occupational Dysfunction through Telehealth: A Scoping Review” at the POTA annual conference Sept. 29. Messiah University Department of Theatre and Dance presents: “Who Will Carry the Word?”

Messiah University’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present Charlotte Delbo’s moving account of survival in our fall production of “Who Will Carry the Word?” opening on Oct. 5. Tickets are on sale now and are buy-one-get-one free for opening night!

“Who Will Carry the Word?”
Written by Charlotte Delbo
Translation by Cynthia Haft
Directed by Ed Cohn and Carmi Wilmot

Oct. 5 – 7, 8 p.m.
Oct. 8, 3 p.m.
Poorman Black Box Theater, Climenhaga Building

“Who Will Carry the Word?” is a deeply moving recount of French writer Charlotte Delbo’s survival during the Holocaust. The play depicts the atrocities during this unfathomable time in history, painting an emotionally raw picture of enduring the unimaginable. While “Who Will Carry the Word?” is based on existence in concentration camps, it also portrays how in times of despair, mankind comes together—bonded by strength and courage—to find hope and the will to escape a dire fate.
Please note that this performance contains mature content and may not be suitable for all audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.

Estimated run time: 2 hours, including one 10-minute intermission

Tickets: $10—adults; $7—MU students (w/ID), MU employees (w/ID), youth (under 18) and seniors (60+)
*Tickets are buy-one-get-one free for opening night!* Tickets can be purchased online at messiah.edu/tickets, by phone at 717-691-6036, or at the door as available. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.

Congratulations to 2023 family nurse practitioner/doctor of nursing practice graduate Michelle Lucas, lead author, with Brenda Elliott, of “Safety Considerations for Home Care Providers” in Home Healthcare Now, The Interprofessional Journal for Home Health Care and Hospice Clinicians. Read online at: https://doi.org/10.1097/NHH.0000000000001190

ABSTRACT
Home care is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, projected to continue increasing as the population ages. However, there are unique safety concerns associated with home care compared to the more controlled hospital or clinic settings, such as driving distractions, potentially dangerous neighborhoods, and in-home risks categorized as environmental, biological, chemical, and emotional. Each home is essentially a new worksite with its own set of safety hazards, increasing the need for home care providers to be aware of safety risks in these ever-changing environments. Ensuring worker safety is essential to the recruitment and retention of home care workers. This article discusses safety risks unique to home care and offers solutions that increase the safety of home care providers. Education around workplace violence, implementation of evidence-based practices, and establishing and adhering to safety policies are paramount.

The Sphinx Virtuosi is a dynamic and inspiring professional self-conducted chamber orchestra that serves as the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization–the leading social justice nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and Julia Alvarez, this evening’s program will showcase the beauty and tradition of excellence inherent in classical music created and performed by Black and Latinx composers for many generations. Together, the Sphinx Virtuosi seek to uplift spirits through sharing the sounds that inspire us and transcend the boundaries of time, history and struggle.
