The Office of Faculty Development supported a robust representation of educators at 2023 Lancaster Learns, a one-day conference held on Friday, Feb. 24. Messiah University contributed as a conference sponsor. Additionally, several Messiah University educators contributed as break-out session presenters during the event. Joanna Behm, assistant professor of occupational therapy, presented Flipped Learning: Student and Faculty Experiences; Kristi Barbato, assistant professor of nursing, Brooke Dunbar-Treadwell, senior lecturer of English, Amy Ginck, senior lecturer in Spanish, Jennifer Ness-Myers, assistant professor of biology, Jenell Paris, professor of anthropology and criminal justice, and Jennifer Thomson, professor of biopsychology, collaborated for their session, Teaching and Learning: Moving Forward. focused on positive advancements that resulted from challenges faced during the pandemic; Melinda Burchard, professor of special education, presented Growing Culturally Responsive Citizens: Planning and Assessing for Change; Mindy Smith, assistant professor in applied health science and Katie Rousopoulos, director of the Agapé Center for local and global engagement, presented Creative Connections: Bridging a public health gap through disciplinary objectives and a study-away program; Heather Barto, professor of counseling, presented Using Mindfulness and Yoga in the Classroom; Cindi Kerns and Rocky Allinger, instructional designers – educational technology services, together with Brad Harman, digital media specialist presented DIY Instructional Video Tips and Tricks.

PSYCamp 2023
We are excited to invite high school students (entering 10th through 12th grade in fall 2023) to attend Psychology Camp this year, June 25-30 (5-day camp)! Psychology Camp provides a fun opportunity for students to explore psychology and the question, “Why do humans do what they do?” This year, we are offering both an overnight residential option and a day-camp commuter option. This enriching summer camp environment will help students gain knowledge and explore various branches of psychology including clinical psychology, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology and biopsychology.

2023 Summer Camps at the Oakes Museum!
This summer we are offering a variety of camps for grades 3rd-12th.
Curator Club and CC2:
Summer camps are weeklong, half-day camps, running 9-noon each day. The cost is $150/camper and there is a before care option for $25.
Curator Club (3rd-5th)
June 19 – 23 – Survive It!
Dig deep into how animals survive a challenging world. Topics will include Build It (habitats), Sense It (vision, smell, and hearing), Move It (locomotion), Eat It (digestion), and Beat It (color and camouflage). We’ll use both the museum collection and the Messiah University campus to explore survival.
July 17-21 – Animals!
Using the museum and the surrounding natural world, each day campers will learn about a different animal group (invertebrates, fish, reptiles/amphibians, birds and mammals).
CC2 (6th-8th)
July 10-14 – Ecology Camp!
The world is complex! Learn about the interactions between different life forms and their environments with hands on observations and experiments in the museum and the living laboratory of campus.
High School Camps:
Camp is 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. each day with a lunch included. Students will eat lunches in Messiah University’s cafeteria or bag lunches to be eaten in the field will be provided.
June 15 and 16 – Vertebrate Anatomy Camp – $200
Learn dissecting skills and use them to gain an overview of vertebrate anatomy by comparing the organ systems and specializations of a variety of representative vertebrates. Students will dissect a variety of vertebrates including: frog, shark and fetal pig. Labs will involve microscopy and tissue examination, along with a variety of other hands-on activities.
June 26 – 30 – Field Biology Camp – $350
Learn how biologists study the natural world! Students will be introduced to the study of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, aquatic communities, terrestrial insects, and our forests in this hands-on field class. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of field investigative equipment in this class. We will assess small mammal communities with live traps, track turtles with telemetry equipment, assess fish communities by electrofishing, and examine forest floor invertebrate using pitfall traps, to mention a few things.
July 12 – Introduction to Dissection (12:30-4:30) – $75
Learn dissecting skills while dissecting an earthworm, frog and pigeon. This is a great introduction to dissection and anatomy! (This half day program does not include lunch.)

Employee cybersecurity training
Messiah is rolling out cybersecurity training for ALL employees, as required by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) as well as the institution’s cyber insurance. The training will be released in four modules. Each module should take about 15 minutes to complete. The first module is available now!
To access the training, go to Falcon Link and search “Cybersecurity Training.” Employees are required to complete all four modules by the end of May.
