“It is with deep appreciation for his 15 years of service as an academic school dean that I am writing to communicate to the Messiah community that Dr. Peter Powers, Dean of the School of Arts, Culture, and Society, has decided to step down from this role at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year. In the upcoming year, Dr. Powers will be engaged in a sabbatical focused on the role of the liberal arts and humanities in the future of higher education. Upon his return to Messiah in the Fall of 2024, Dr. Powers will become the Director of the Center for Public Humanities and continue to provide leadership in teaching and scholarship as a Professor of English.
Dr. Powers first joined the faculty at Messiah in 1997 and his contributions to the university as a faculty member, department chair, and school dean have been both exemplary and extensive. In the arc of his administrative career, he has provided leadership across a wide range of disciplines, first as Chair of the English Department, and then as Dean of the School of Humanities, Interim Dean of the School of Business, Education, and Social Science, and most recently, Dean of the School of Arts, Culture, and Society. In these roles, he has championed academic excellence, created opportunities for interdisciplinary projects and scholarship, and fostered an ongoing collegial and collaborative spirit.
Dr. Powers’ contributions are far-reaching and include as exemplars the creation and launch of new programming, including Digital Media and Digital Humanities, developing academic summer camps in the Humanities, and serving as chair of the Undergraduate Research Committee. He has also contributed as a scholar, both through publication of his own work as well as through successful and collaborative grant writing, including the recent Thriving Congregations grant funded through the Lilly Endowment. Throughout his tenure, he has been a model colleague and institutional servant, contributing to initiatives that include the Term-tenure and Promotion Task Force, the General Education Task Force, multiple institutional strategic planning processes, as well as Middle States accreditation reviews. His mark on the institution is significant and we have been strengthened as a community by his committed, insightful, and experienced leadership.
With this transition, I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Emerson Powery, Assistant Dean of the School of Arts, Culture, and Society and Professor of Biblical Studies, has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the School of Arts, Culture, and Society for the 2023-2024 academic year. A search for the next school dean is anticipated during the 2023-2024 academic year.

Victoria Lang’25, soprano, a voice student of Damian Savarino, won the 2023 Keith Lance Kuhlman Performance Award. Named in honor of the late Keith Lance Kuhlman, this annual solo competition housed in the Department of Music, is open to any current music major and the winner receives a cash prize. Participants must first submit video submissions in order to advance to the Finals Concert, which is then adjudicated by three impartial, outside judges. Congratulations, Victoria!

Todd Goranson, professor of music, was a guest lecturer at the Whitworth University Department of Music in Spokane, Washington on Feb. 28 and the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho on March 2. Goranson presented talks on overcoming performance anxiety and injury prevention for instrumental music majors at both universities, in addition to a saxophone master class and one-on-one work with students at the University of Idaho.

Exploring Careers in Healthcare camp 2023
Messiah University is offering Exploring Careers in Healthcare summer day camp June 12-14, for students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grades this fall. Our camp is designed for students to explore some of the most dynamic healthcare professions, including nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, applied health sciences and nutrition and dietetics, from a faith-based perspective. Patient case studies will provide context for engaging, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and panel discussions in state-of-the-art facilities on main campus and at Winding Hill with Messiah’s expert faculty, students and professional practitioners.

Based on the Brothers Grimm most popular folk tales, “Into the Woods” is a reimagining of what can happen when beloved fairy tale characters are thrown together while pursuing their dreams and wishes. The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning team of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine bring to life characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack (down from his beanstalk), the Baker and his wife, a pair of princes in search of their brides, and the big bad wolf who is on the lookout for his next meal. It intertwines these stories in increasingly dramatic and humorous ways and asks what comes after the “happily ever after” and whether the journey through the woods was worth it in the end.
Estimated run time: 2 hours and 45 minutes, including one 15-minute intermission.

Sydney White ’23 presented at the Capitol
On March 8, Sydney White ’23 (biology) presented her research done in Anne Reeve’s lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Undergraduate Research at the Capitol poster session. Seth Kabonick ’22 (biology) and Noah Smith ’23 (biochemistry) were co-authors on the poster which described the synthesis and evaluation of natural product analogs as inhibitors of an enzyme involved in insulin signaling. Messiah was one of 55 participating colleges and universities, and to our knowledge, this is the first time we have been represented at this session that highlights the importance of undergraduate research to state legislators.

- 5-6 p.m., Come back to listen to the Inaugural Seed Library Lecture given by Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability.
o Hoover will be discussing the value of seed saving, the community of growing one’s food, the way we share knowledge in the food system, and the role of the liberal arts in food system education.
