BID FAREWELL

Murray Library bids farewell to Kimberly Steiner, interlibrary loan specialist, as she embarks on an exciting new chapter of her career journey. Since 2015, Kimberly has been an invaluable member of our Murray Library family, bringing forth innovations and efficiencies to our interlibrary loan process. Her dedication and expertise have not only facilitated access to rare and foreign language materials but have also elevated ILL services to new heights.

Kimberly’s impact extends far beyond the realms of interlibrary loan. She has been a true champion of campus partnerships and student-focused programming, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to enhancing the student experience. Her original events such as Clue, CrafTea, and Mini Golf have become beloved traditions at our library, highlighting her boundless creativity and passion for engaging students. Kimberly’s involvement in significant initiatives like MLK Day planning and Living Library programming embodied her dedication to fostering inclusivity and dialogue. She has also served as a leader on Agape Center service trips. The library is a better and more beautiful place thanks to her attention to displays and details.

As Kimberly sets sail for new horizons at Dickinson College as the associate director of campus life for orientation and campus activities, we will undoubtedly miss her infectious energy and innovative spirit. Her final day is Friday, March 22. The Department of Nursing bids farewell to Ashley Ringquist, graduate clinical coordinator, as she embarks on a new career chapter. A department celebration was held for Ashley on Wednesday Feb 28, her last day at Messiah.

Ashley’s started at Messiah in July of 2014, and for nearly ten years, she served as both an administrative assistant and graduate clinical coordinator. In 2021, her role split, and she served as the graduate clinical coordinator until her departure. At Messiah, she was crucial in establishing clinical partnerships across the United States. Ashley went above and beyond to help students find good learning experiences for the various nursing students we serve (Family Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Educators, Nursing Administrators, and RN-BSN students).

Outside of her day-to-day role, Ashley was instrumental in helping assemble our annual Department Newsletter, serving on the social committee, and serving on various other Department committees as needed. She was with us through several rounds of accreditation and adopting a new clinical tracking software program, leaving us in exceptionally good hands. She worked to connect other departments that use the same clinical tracking program to troubleshoot challenges. Her persistence in ensuring the platform was user-friendly and everyone was trained to use it was invaluable.

Please keep Ashley in your prayers as she takes on a new role at Rasmussen University, where she will serve as a remote clinical coordinator for their Florida-based nursing program. We will miss Ashley dearly. If you would like to wish her well, please email baumen@messiah.edu for contact information.

Tech Support – Did you know?

  • Qualtrics – Qualtrics has changed their licensing from unlimited responses to a set number of responses allotted to Messiah. This allocation of responses should be sufficient for the needs of Messiah this year. However, if you are using Qualtrics for basic processes such as a sign-in/sign-out system there may be another software that can save Messiah responses and still meet your needs. Please refer to the knowledge base https://blogs.messiah.edu/ETS/kb/forms-forms-on-campus/ for some information about the different form/survey tools on campus and/or contact techsupport@messiah.edu for more detailed guidance.
    • Chrome, Edge, or Firefox? – Chrome and Edge can be signed into using Messiah credentials, and will synchronize with the Messiah password, making it easy to back up and restore bookmarks, passwords, etc. Firefox requires an account that will NOT synchronize with the Messiah credentials requiring you to remember another password. There is no longer a recommended browser to use on campus.
    • Zoom Phones/Caller ID – As the campus switches to the new Zoom phone system, please note internal caller id numbers will appear as 223-285-xxxx instead of their extension until the system is completely switched. Please continue to use the 4-digit extension and not the 10-digit phone number to contact others on campus.

A torn page from an old travel book sparks parolee Percy Talbot to journey to a small town in Wisconsin. There she finds a new life working at the Spitfire Grill. The folks in this depressed town have more to worry about than Percy’s past, but fear and hesitancy turn to friendship when Percy schemes to revive the old grill by raffling it off. Business Department Professor Keith Quesenberry’s research paper “Time Is on Story’s Side: Story Development Impacts Daily Shares of Viral Advertising Videos” has been accepted to be presented at the annual Society of Business, Industry, and Economics academic conference in April. A continuation of previous storytelling research with Michael Coolsen, professor of marketing at Shippensburg University, it expands previous analysis of over 100 YouTube viral ad videos that found more fully developed stories on a 0 to 5 act drama scale increased total shares and views. This additional regression analysis found a sharper decline in shares for videos that tell a less developed story over a 23-day period indicating that viral advertising videos are shared for a longer time, or stay viral longer, with a story.

Messiah cybersecurity competition team wins third place!

On Jan. 20, the Messiah University cybersecurity competition team placed 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition! They will be advancing to compete in the regional competition in March.

The competition was an “inherit and defend” style event. Teams were given a simulated business production environment and had to harden the systems quickly before the attackers tried to break in. In addition to securing systems the team functioned as a legitimate business, responding to tasks from the C-suite and keeping all systems online. Throughout the competition the most impressive thing that Messiah’s teams did well was remain calm under pressure and communicated with each other.

This was Messiah University’s second year participating in the competition. The senior team was comprised of Raymond Truex (captain), Grace Taylor, Aidan Hubley, Carolina Hatch, Brandan Snook, and Christopher Copeland. The first-year team was comprised of Eli Kalmbacher (captain), Austin King, Aiden Morris, and Ryan Scannell. Both teams were coached by David Bibighaus.

Placing 3rd out of 24 teams is an exciting achievement for the team. They are excited to return to the regionals in March for the second year in a row and will continue preparing for the next competition.

A note of thanks

I wanted to thank each of you who were so kind by sending my mom a card at Christmas. She was so tickled to get so many cards (over 30). I was there the one day when the employee came in to give her the mail, she said “Shirley OMG you keep getting so many cards”, and my mom just smiled. She didn’t recognize anyone (dementia), but each time she opened one she would just smile, she had them all over her room. So to each of you who showed her this kindness, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s not always the gift you give, but the love and care with something as simple as a card can bring to someone. Just look at that smile on her face. Thank you and may God bless each and every one of you. – Stacy and her mom

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

We are delighted to announce Paula Holtzinger as the new director of the Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement, effective Jan. 3. Paula’s various experiences in service learning, global study, work and service, as well as community partner relations wonderfully reflect the mission of the Agape Center. Paula is a proud graduate of Messiah’s Peace and Conflict Studies program. The transformative experiences she had as a student leader with the Agape Center influenced her decision to pursue international work through the English Language Institute where she facilitated experiential learning opportunities and taught English in Vietnam, Lebanon, Hong Kong and Cambodia. Paula also served as an emergency response assistant for Lebanon and Syria with Mennonite Central Committee in Beirut. From there, Paula joined Journey’s End Refugee Settlement Services as the employment training program manager in Buffalo, NY. Most recently, Paula has served as the administrative assistant to the Agape Center team while completing her graduate work in restorative justice, trauma and resilience in educational environments. Please join us in welcoming Paula into this role! – Christy Hanson, Dean of Experiential Learning and Leadership Development
