Todd Goranson, professor of music, will complete his associate of science degree in registered nursing through the Harrisburg Area Community College weekend nursing program this week. His graduation pinning ceremony on Dec. 13 marks the completion of 22 credit hours of lab science and mathematics coursework, 37 credits of registered nursing courses, and 525 clinical hours at medical facilities since the summer of 2020. An advocate for musicians’ mental and musculoskeletal health, Todd is excited to use his knowledge and new credentials in his teaching and outreach.

You’re Invited: MOT Research Symposium

You are invited to the Occupational Therapy program’s annual Research Symposium on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5-7 p.m. in the Jordan Science Center (Hollinger Lounge 150/152) on Messiah University’s main campus. Come and go as you please, while enjoying light refreshments. This year, students will share their year-long descriptive research studies on the following topics:

• Teacher perceptions on the use of flexible seating
  Perceptions of OT students with disabilities regarding accommodations
  § Social & leisure participation in those with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)
  § OT and PT use of sensory evaluation and treatment with those with neurological conditions
  § Healthcare students’ experience of burnout
  § Understanding of occupational therapy among organizations serving those experiencing homelessness
  § Recently graduated OT perceptions of spirituality in their education and their practice

Employee Christmas Event

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of saxophonist Tim Warfield’s “Jazzy Christmas” recording. Selected by the New York Times as one of the “Top 20 Best Holiday Listens” of 2013, his recording vividly showcases a collection of traditional holiday songs, performed from a jazz perspective. The musical program features new takes on familiar material such as “The Little Drummer Boy” and “Silent Night,” but also lesser-known gems like Claude Thornhill’s “Snowfall.” Joining Warfield will be guest trumpeter Terell Stafford, pianist Neil Podgurski, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, bassist Rodney Whitaker, drummer Clarence Penn and vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan.

Need a festive soundtrack for wrapping presents and trimming the tree? Music streaming database, Naxos, contains many imaginative and beautiful albums of carols and other Christmas music, from ancient to modern. The 5th annual Human Library Project is where Messiah students, faculty and staff become open books, sharing their personal stories with readers. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers.

Travel reminders

As travel restrictions continue to lift, Procurement Services would like to remind you of the following:

•  Please refer to section 6 of Messiah University’s Expenditure Policy prior to making travel arrangements for University business. Details include:

• General travel principles
• Air travel
• Travel by car/van
  • A university owned pool vehicle must be used when available
  • If not available, use the Vehicle Selection Worksheet to determine the most cost effective alternative
  • Employees must be an approved driver to use a pool vehicle or a rental car
• Travel related business expenses
• Travel related business meal expense guidelines

• Enterprise is the preferred rental vehicle supplier for Messiah University and should be used for regional and national university travel.  Details here.
• As stated in the Purchasing Card Manual, cardholders should notify the Purchasing Card Administrator with dates and location of travel at least 2 weeks prior to departure.  Plans will be communicated to M&T Bank to ensure out of area purchases are not flagged as fraud and declined.

DID YOU KNOW…

All requisitions must be through the approval process by 5PM on Friday afternoon to be paid in the following week’s check run? This allows the accounting team to prepare Messiah’s accounts to cover the payments. It takes 24 hours to move money from Messiah’s many assets to cover the proposed check run. Last minute payment requests run the risk of the funds not being available. Call with questions x6010.

Cognos unavailable Dec. 8 – 9 for upgrade

On Dec. 8 through Dec. 9, ITS will be working with our contractor to upgrade our Cognos version 11 software. The Cognos environment will be available no later than Monday, Dec.12. We hope to have it up by the end of the day on Dec. 9.

During the week of finals (12/12-12/16) the Oakes Museum gift Shop will be open for staff and students to shop! The gift shop will also be 20% off! Shop for puppets, books, geodes, activity boxes and more!

Susquehanna Chorale to Perform Traditional Candlelight Christmas Concerts

The Susquehanna Chorale, a nationally acclaimed adult chamber ensemble of 40 auditioned singers, will present its traditional Candlelight Christmas concert series in December. The programs will be conducted by founder, artistic director and conductor Linda L. Tedford.

This year, the Chorale’s program will feature Members of the Messiah University Brass in a performance of John Rutter’s inspirational three-movement Gloria, as well as other works.

The program also includes a majestic opening processional, Personent Hodie, Jim Clements’ Gabriel’s Message and Eric Whitacre’s hauntingly beautiful Lux Aurumque. The Chorale is certain to bring holiday cheer with their performance of Jerry Rubino’s setting of It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and a whimsical, not-to-be-missed performance of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Traditional songs and carols follow, including an audience sing-along of Mack Wilberg’s Joy to the World. The evening concludes with the Chorale surrounding the audience for the traditional finale, Silent Night.

Performances are Friday, Dec. 16 at the Calvin and Janet High Center, Messiah University, Mechanicsburg 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 17 at Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 18 at Market Square Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg 4 p.m.

A pre-concert instrumental recital will be presented by the Messiah University Brass 15 minutes prior to each performance. A reception for the audience and singers is planned to follow each program.
