But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Recently, many of the admissions counselors attended the annual North American Coalition of College Admissions Professionals (NACCAP) conference at Westmont College in Montecito, California. Sierra Kinslow, associate director of admissions, multicultural recruitment, co-presented with a team of international admissions recruiters from other Christian institutions with a session titled “International Recruitment: Opportunities and Affirmations”. Additionally, she co-presented with Virgil Angeles, assistant director of admissions, social media, on the session titled, “Grow Your Own: Developing and Retaining Your Community of Color”. They highlighted some of the work Messiah has done with recruitment and retention for both students and faculty/staff of color.

On Monday, June 3, Dwayne Magee, director for print and mail, successfully completed the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association’s Lincoln Leadership Program. This intensive training included pre-conference educational modules and culminated in an in-person session at the 2024 Des Moines, Iowa IPMA Conference. Congratulations to Dwayne for his dedication to leadership development.

BID FAREWELL

The operations division announces the retirement of Brad Markley, director of facility services and Denise Blackley, administrative coordinator, facility services. Individually and collectively, they have led departmental and campus wide initiatives which will impact Messiah University for years to come.

During Brad’s 18 years as director, he has worked tirelessly to bring a professional level of service to campus. Brad created systems, integrated technology and developed employees. His management of utilities and work to bring natural gas to campus has saved the university millions of dollars over the years.

Denise has been instrumental in the development of all aspects of the way the facilities departments are managed. A few highlights include support in the setup and management of a computerized maintenance software package, building identification and record management, and management of the student workers in the facilities areas. Denise has been the “we” behind the leadership team’s “we can do that” response.

The operations division is thankful for the many contributions Brad and Denise have made over the course of their careers. Please stop by, call or email Brad and Denise. Their last day on campus will be Friday, June 28.

As the division prepares for their retirements, we are pleased to announce Brian Miller has been promoted to the role of director of facility services, and Mark Graybill has accepted the role of director of buildings and grounds. Brian and Mark will lead as co-directors of the division. We welcome Tracy Gaito, administrative assistant, facility services, as the newest member of the facility services team.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Just a reminder, our contract with Perspectives EAP ended on June 1. We now offer an EAP through UNUM.

We recognize that employees may from time-to-time experience stress, trauma or other life events that affect both their personal and work lives as well as their overall quality of life. The UNUM EAP offers confidential professional assessment and referral assistance for employees and their families to help them address such challenges.

A summary of services and contact information is included in the attached flyer. Examples of the major life issues for which you may receive support from an EAP professional include:

• Depression, anxiety and other mood disorders
• Relationship or family problems, including divorce and abuse
• Substance abuse and other addiction problems
• Job-related stress or work conflicts

This free benefit is available 24/7 to all employees and their family members. We want to emphasize that participation in the program is completely confidential.

Tech Support – Did you know?

  • Personalizing your Messiah laptop with stickers is not recommended, however, if you have done so, please do NOT attempt to remove them when leaving or getting an upgrade. Tech Support will remove them using proper tools and chemicals.
    • We provide shredding. Please bring all paper for shredding directly to the Office of Information Security located in the basement of Old Main (High Center side) OM009 to be shredded. Someone will be available for drop-off from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. during the week. Special arrangements (e.g., shredding pick-up) can be made by calling Allen Snook, director of information security, at ext. 6790.
    • Microsoft 365 is available for you to install on your computer if you are still running Office 2016. To install it, Open Software Center from your desktop or start menu, find Microsoft 365 64-bit, click install (plan on 10-15 minutes for this process). After installation is complete, navigate to Software Center again. Click Office 365 taskbar and start menu fix (this will remove those 2016 icons). Sign back into your account.
