Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center Dedication Celebration

The ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Dr. Thomas and Linda Pheasant Entrance Plaza (the building entrance facing the campus green) followed by a dessert reception inside the building. The rain location for the ceremony will be inside the building. (Note: the University will be hosting a private outdoor luncheon prior to this ceremony to show appreciation for the trustees and friends whose generosity made this new facility and campus green space possible for our campus community.) You’re invited!

Join us Monday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. for the Friends of Murray Library 19th Annual Dinner Meeting and Program. Devin Manzullo-Thomas will share findings from his forthcoming book, Exhibiting Evangelicalism: Commemoration and Religion’s Purpose of the Past, about the history of evangelical museums in America. In the United States, museums are respected cultural institutions and are viewed as places for education, tourism or the cultivation of civic virtue – supposedly secular purposes. But many museums challenge this simple characterization, including museums owned and operated by evangelical Christians. Devin will describe how these sites came to exist, the narratives they promote, and how they impact public culture in the United States today.

Textbook Adoption dates for spring 2022

In order to obtain the most from the Slingshot Choice program as well as to prepare for the likelihood of continued supply chain disruption due to COVID-19, we are asking Messiah faculty (or designated admins) to submit their course material adoptions in a timely way through the Slingshot Pro Adopt tool (formerly Butler Central) available using your Messiah SSO. For your convenience, we have also added a card on FALCONlink that you can favorite.

Once Spring adoptions have opened for your division, instructors will begin receiving notifications from Slingshot Pro Adopt system about adoption submission and reminders.

Please note that emails from messiah@slingshotedu.com are not junk, phising or spam. This is how we communicate with you about your adoptions so please be sure to pay close attention to these messages.

United Way Campaign 2021

On Oct. 12, we all received an email from President Phipps encouraging us to give towards this year’s United Way Campaign. As a reminder the campaign will be from Oct. 25-Nov. 5. Dr. Brenda Elliott, assistant professor and coordinator of MSN, CAGS, and RN-BSN Programs, virtually presented with two colleagues at the 2021 Academy of Medical Surgical Nursing (AMSN) Annual Convention in Orlando, FL held Sept 29 – Oct 3. Their presentation was titled, “Applying social determinants of health to impact veteran health outcomes.”

Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of Music, had his saxophone solo/chamber/concerto CD project released on the Mark Masters label in summer 2021. The album, titled Cantilena, is named after a work that the late American composer Theodore Hansen wrote for Goranson. The project also includes the first commercial recordings of Paul Harvey’s ‘Trio’, Catherine’ McMichael’s ‘Eclectic Trio’, and David Gillinghams’s ‘American Counterpoint’. The album features collaborations with Triforia Winds, Messiah music faculty members Patrice Ewoldt and Jocelyn Goranson, as well as the Messiah Wind Ensemble.

Dr. Goranson also presented a lecture and question and answer session for the undergraduate music majors at Corban University (Salem, Oregon) on Sept. 14. Titled “Strategies for Overcoming Performance Anxiety”, the lecture presented an explanation of the most common anxiety symptoms that musicians encounter in performance situations, as well as an evidence-based approach to prevent and overcome this symptoms.

Visa IntelliLink rebrand – now Visa Spend Clarity for Enterprise

Effective Sept. 25, Visa-IntelliLink Spend Management is now Visa Spend Clarity for Enterprise. The main changes are the new product name, new logo and updated branding in the user-interface. All functionality remains the same. In addition to the new name and brand, there is a new URL to access the application.

For some time following the transition date, Visa will automatically redirect users to the new URL if they log in using the old one, even if they have saved the current URL as a favorite.

For Mobile App Users
The Visa Spend Clarity for Enterprise relaunch for the mobile app took place on Sept. 25, the name has been updated in the App Store® and Google Play™ Store and the new Visa Spend Clarity for Enterprise mobile app is now available. If you currently use the existing Visa IntelliLink Spend Management mobile app, you will need to update it to see the changes take effect on your device. Simply access your app store and hit Update. If you don’t proactively access your app store, you will receive a notification prompt when you open the old app, reminding you to update.

All Purchasing Card documentation available on our website will be updated with the new name and links as soon as possible.

Deadline for submitting fall 2021 EMS events

Monday, Nov. 1 is the deadline to submit your fall 2021 EMS event requests that include tech/audio needs, set up needs or events that require tickets. Requests that do not require these needs will still be accepted, as will any event for 2022. Email roomres@messiah.edu with any questions.

Important dates to remember are Friday, Oct. 8, Saturday, Nov. 13 and Friday, Dec. 3. These dates are blackout dates and no other events requiring services may be scheduled. If you do not need any services on these dates, please email your request to roomres@messiah.edu.

This Friday – Trivia Night

Pulitzer Prize winner to deliver American Democracy lecture at Messiah University

The Center for Public Humanities in conjunction with the Department of History-Politics and International Relations will host the annual American Democracy Lecture on Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., in the High Center’s Parmer Hall. This year’s featured speaker is Yale History professor Dr. David Blight, whose talk, “‘My Voice, My Pen, My Vote’: Frederick Douglass and American Democracy,” draws on his 2019 Pulitzer Prize winning title, “Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom.” A book signing and reception immediately follow the lecture.

Due to the new Campus Store vendor’s textbook subscription service, Slingshot Choice, the due dates for faculty submissions of copyright and non-copyrighted material have been adjusted. With enrollment in this new service, the Campus Store aims to deliver a student’s required course materials, including course packets and lab manuals, to the students a week before the semester starts.
As a result, the Campus Store needs these materials to be received into their inventory sooner than in the past.

On Sept. 22, the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) announced that Messiah Press has been recognized with 3 Silver In-Print awards and a special recognition for Messiah’s COVID response pieces. These printed materials were developed by Messiah Press Graphic Designer and Adjunct Instructor for Communications, Heather Seaman. The silver awards are for the Department of Theatre Antigone marquee, a flier for The Department of Theatre production The Birds, and the Department of Sustainability, Sustainable Living certificates. With deep appreciation for 11 years of service, we wish Messiah University Registrar, Carrie Widdowson, the very best in her retirement this upcoming January. Carrie served first as associate registrar from 2011 to 2018 before becoming registrar – a role that has always been key especially with the development of new programming and in responding proactively to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are pleased to announce that Kathee Clark, associate registrar, has accepted the position of registrar at Messiah University. Prior to joining Messiah in 2018, Kathee served in a variety of roles at Lancaster Bible College and, during her tenure as associate registrar at Messiah, has become an experienced and respected colleague. Kathee will transition into the role of registrar beginning Dec. 1.

Update on card stunt event

Despite our best efforts to recruit the amount of individuals needed for the Oct. 5 card stunt event, we do not have enough volunteers to make the event possible. Unfortunately, we have chosen to cancel the event and we are not planning to reschedule.

In search of panelists

The Office of Student Success is partnering with Murray Library to present a panel event entitled “Fueled by Failure: Unlikely Paths to Success” on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 7-8 p.m. We are seeking panelists who would be willing to share their story of a failure in their life that God used to change their trajectory and lead them to a new place that was like nothing they had imagined. The idea is to inspire students to embrace their failure and not fear it, as growth can be exponential in those experiences. We are planning for the 4 panelists to be asked questions shared with them in advance followed by a Q & A session with the attendees.

Passport applications

Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, to process passport applications. PLEASE NOTE: the current time for processing passports is 12-18 weeks.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page
Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID

Lecture by Dr. Hans Boersma

On Monday, Oct. 4, the Honors Program is pleased to host Hans Boersma, one of the foremost Christian public intellectuals and churchmen of our time. Dr. Boersma is the Saint Benedict Servants of Christ Professor in Ascetical Theology at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin. He has also taught at Regent College and Trinity Western University in British Columbia. Dr. Boersma is the author of several books and articles on a wide range of topics in theology, the interpretation of Scripture, and religious history. His lecture, “Seeing the Face of God: On Choosing the Better Part,” is on Monday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall, and is free and open to the public.

Be a part of Messiah’s first-ever card stunt event!

In April 2020, Messiah was planning to produce a unique, professional video to introduce Messiah University to the world on July 1, 2020. The “card stunt”-style video was to serve as the reveal of the new Messiah University logo from our former college logo. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, this video was postponed.

We are excited to share that we are planning to perform the rescheduled card stunt—with a whole new script—in just a few short weeks!

We need 150 more volunteers to make this event a success!

WHAT: Messiah University’s first-ever card stunt event and video (See a sample)
WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 5 (rain date: Oct. 6), 9:30-11 a.m. (this time includes refreshments, video briefing and completing the card stunt) NOTE: Volunteers are now needed for just 1.5 hours total (versus the previously announced 2.5 hours.)

WHO: Messiah employees and students (Sign up with a group of your friends and colleagues!)
Though the event is outside, the University will provide each participant a KN95 mask at the field to be used when social distancing is not possible.

Marketing and Communications design project initiation timeline update

The Office of Marketing and Communications design team creates all projects being sent off-campus to 200 or more recipients or to prospective students.

For a typical project created in the office of marketing and communications, please plan for a minimum of 6 weeks to produce it. (Previously, the timeline was 5 weeks.) This allows our team 4 weeks to design 3 drafts to perfect your project and 2 weeks for Messiah Press to print it. Please allow more time for mailing, variable data and specialty paper. To initiate your project, please begin by filling out the form at messiah.edu/projectinitiation a minimum of 6 weeks before the project is needed. Early planning is always appreciated and key to getting your project completed on-time! Our project coordinator, Karen Garlinger, will then set up a short meeting to discuss your project goals with the design team.

Compliance communications

The Office of Human Resources and Compliance maintains an electronic archive that houses copies of any and all communications related to compliance that are distributed across campus. This includes, but is not limited to: notifications that are sent out annually for compliance purposes, notifications related to campus incidents, and communications sent out when onboarding new students or employees.

As you distribute compliance-related communications, please send an electronic copy to jsmithmyer@messiah.edu. If you are unsure as to whether or not something fits into the compliance communications category, please send it and HR will determine its relevance.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, Dr. Brenda Elliott (Department of Nursing), along with the co-editors and two other chapter authors of their 2020 book titled, “Veteran-centered care in education and practice: An essential guide for nurse faculty” were invited by Springer Publishing to deliver a virtual webinar on Sept. 9. The talk titled, “ Honoring military veterans: Four approaches to achieving a veteran-centered nursing practice” focused on the need for nurses to understand military culture, the impact of the MISSION Act on veterans in community healthcare settings, common injuries associated with military service, and strategies for nurse educators to enhance student learning of veteran-centered care in the classroom/clinical.

Educational Technology Services (ETS) is delighted to announce Vicki Swope in the role of help desk support (tier I). Vicki joins Messiah from her previous role as computer and library aide at Northern York High School. Her experience there, assisting both teachers and students with technology support, positions her for a seamless transition as she helps to support ETS’ help desk. Stunt card video: take 2!

Yesterday, you received a mass email from President Phipps regarding an upcoming “card stunt” we are planning to perform at Messiah University! If you recall, back in April 2020, Messiah partnered with Kivett Productions out of Orlando, Florida, to produce a unique video that would reveal the new Messiah University logo from our former college logo. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

WHAT

The exciting news is that we have rescheduled this card stunt and video (with a new script!) in just a few weeks.

WHO

To make this a success, we will need 200 volunteers from across campus, and that is where you come in! You are invited to be a part of this fun and distinctive video. A key goal of this project is to showcase that it is the people of Messiah that make our campus community such a special place.

WHEN

Filming will occur on Shoemaker Field on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to noon (rain date: Oct. 6, same time and location). While the actual shoot will not take the entire time, volunteers must be available for the entire window on both days, which will include a briefing by the director, placement of individuals for the card stunt, and the filming itself. Light refreshments will be served for those who participate.

REGISTER

If you’d like to volunteer, please discuss with your immediate supervisor before registering. Supervisors, please make every effort possible to allow employees to participate if they wish.

Staffing updates from Enrollment Management

We have elevated Kristin Thomas’ role to director of admissions hospitality. This new position will sit on the admissions directors’ leadership team, co-chair the new Admissions Visit and Event Advisory Team and direct the development of all visit, event and hospitality programming. She will also continue to give leadership to student workers and the ambassador team.

Kristin has hired Amanda McCarty as our new admissions hospitality assistant. She will be working 1-5 p.m. all year in the admissions lobby. Amanda comes to us from Northpoint Bible College in Massachusetts where she served in a variety of roles in admissions. She is also enrolled in the higher education master’s program here at Messiah.

Given the importance we are placing on attracting a more diverse student body and developing cultural intelligence among our team members as key themes both in our strategic plan and our mission to be reconcilers in Christ, we are thrilled to announce that Sierra Kinslow has been promoted to associate director of admissions, multicultural recruitment. Sierra is a strong leader who is passionate about reconciliation. We are excited to see her guide and influence the Division of Enrollment Management in matters related to recruiting and retaining multicultural and international students and first-generation students.

You may have heard that Chad Muise accepted a head coaching position at Houghton College and that Molly (Janczyk) Bruce has accepted a position working in financial advising with Kingdom Focused Financial Group in Dillsburg, PA (affiliated with Thrivent). They were both valuable members of our team whom we will miss dearly. In their absence, Nate Litman will be adding the coordination of telecounseling to his current responsibilities.

Virgil Angeles has been promoted to coordinator of social media, in addition to continuing in his position as admissions counselor. He will be responsible for the enhancement of our admissions department’s multiple social media accounts with the goal to increase prospective student engagement. He has also transitioned into the role of liaison for the of music, art and design, and theatre and dance departments.

We have hired two recent alumni to fill their admissions counselor positions:
• Catherine Arke is a May 2021 marketing graduate of Messiah. She served as a RA her last two years at Messiah and has worked in the Admissions Office through the school year and summers since she was a first-year student. Catherine will serve students who come from York and Adams counties, as well as New England.
• Josh Gerber is a May 2021 graduate of Messiah with a double major in biblical and religious studies and business. At Messiah, he was involved in leading men’s ministry and was a work study student in the BRS department. Josh will serve students coming from Western PA, Downstate NY (including NYC and Long Island), the South and Midwest.

As we are hoping to resume travel this fall, we have hired Jennifer Weaver as our temporary traveling recruiter through November. Jennifer is a 2003 political science graduate of Messiah. After graduating, she attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and received her master of divinity. More recently, she worked as a residence hall advisor at Lancaster Mennonite School. We are thankful for her representation of Messiah at off-campus events.

As you may have heard, Teresa Stover retired from the financial aid team at the end of July. Congratulations to her in this important decision! She has trained Lori McGill Sarago to take over as financial aid technical coordinator. In the short year that Lori has been with us, she has shown excitement to be working in the Messiah environment, a great willingness to learn and the flexibility to take on new tasks, making her the perfect choice for this role. As we embrace the challenge to make the financial aid process more digestible for students and families, this role will be key in coordinating with the financial aid team, the enrollment management operations team and with colleagues in student financial services to communicate effectively.

Financial Aid is also excited to welcome two new members to their team:
• Chris Ackley will serve as financial aid counselor/coordinator of grant processing. Chris joins us from Dickinson College where he was most recently employed as the assistant director of financial aid. Chris arrives from Dickinson with eight years of increasing levels of responsibility in financial aid and will serve our students well through this role.
• Sheryl Sanders will serve as financial aid office assistant for 15 – 20 hours per week. Sheryl comes to us with a robust background in office administration, including time working at Lancaster County Christian School. Most recently, Sheryl has been self-employed as an interior designer.

In all of this, please join me in congratulating Leslie Bencivenga in her promotion to executive assistant for enrollment management. This role and title acknowledge the excellent work Leslie performs in supporting the EM leadership team, collaborating with partners across campus, and working with external firms and vendors to serve our prospective students and their families.

The Campaign for Messiah University: Learning for Life, Transforming the World

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to share exciting news regarding our current capital campaign – The Campaign for Messiah University: Learning for Life, Transforming the World. This campaign supports our vision to educate students for a lifetime of learning opportunities, including engaging our students and alumni beyond the undergraduate and graduate programs to include certificates and enhanced learning courses. This campaign encompasses several broad areas that support our efforts to fulfill our vision. They include: the Messiah fund and scholarship aid, scholarship and program endowments, new facilities, and estate planning gifts.

We have already reached several milestone accomplishments, including the construction of the Larsen Finance Lab, Martin Dining Commons, the Falcon Fitness Center, Sawyer Gymnasium, Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena, a new lacrosse field, the resurfacing of Anderson Field, and, most recently, the Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center. Further, we have significantly increased scholarship endowment and direct aid resources for our students. In fact, we have received $70 million toward our $75 million goal! Our plan is to reach the goal by December 31, 2022.

The public phase of the campaign launches Thursday, September 16, and we encourage you to follow along with our progress over the next set of months.

The Messiah University YouTube Channel

Messiah University’s official YouTube channel was launched by the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) in 2010 to host the videos the OMC team produced to strategically communicate the story, brand and distinctive programs of Messiah to prospective students and their families (i.e. branding and academic program videos). Over time, OMC expanded the use of Messiah’s YouTube channel to host videos it created that may be of interest to current students and their families, employees and alumni (i.e., Commencement videos, Community Day year-in-review videos). While OMC currently produces a limited number of videos that serve key marketing communication clients, goals and initiatives at Messiah, it does not manage broader video production for campus clients. However, over the past decade, OMC has opened up Messiah’s YouTube channel to house some videos that are produced outside OMC and that meet certain criteria. Criteria for consideration to host a video on Messiah’s YouTube channel can be found here.

Congratulations to Leah Conner for her promotion to assistant registrar for the School of Graduate Studies. Leah earned her M.A. in higher education from Messiah this past December. Leah has served as the records specialist supporting Graduate Enrollment and Graduate Registrar’s Office for the past four years. Leah will now focus her time and work to Registrar’s Office tasks for the School of Graduate Studies.

New lodging page for Messiah guests

Conference and Event Services is pleased to announce a new, easy-to-use lodging page for guests of Messiah University. The previous lodging page listed local hotels, but required guests to call the hotel directly to book. Our new partnership with Campus Travel Management Inc. allows guests to book online with the hotel of their choice. Rates are listed, including any Messiah discount, after dates are selected for the stay. If you have guests coming to campus for meetings or events, please encourage them to use this new system.

Introducing the new High Center Season

Messiah is pleased to announce the 2021-2022 High Center Season— featuring a mix of distinctive concerts, theatre events and lectures, including lectures by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Blight (Oct. 12), Humanities Symposium speaker Krista Tippet (Feb. 24) and NASA astronaut, Mae Jemison (April 13). Fall brings performances by Voctave (Oct. 2), Soprano, Toni Palmertree, performing with the Messiah University Symphony Orchestra (Nov. 19) and Theatre Messiah’s performance of Much Ado About Nothing (starting Nov. 11). Spring 2022 highlights include the Mendelssohn Piano Trio (Jan. 30) and Azaguno “Nukpɔkpɔ” (April 2). Both the fall and spring seasons include several performances by Messiah’s own artists- and ensembles-in-residence and our celebrated student and faculty ensembles. Student applications now accepted for Into the City Nashville

On October 16-20, the Into the City career immersion program will travel to Tennessee to visit the many Messiah University alumni living and working in the greater Nashville area. Site visits include the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, music producer Sal Oliveri, Regions Bank, the Nashville Soccer Club, musical artist Ben Gallaher, and creative events company CTS.

Lori Nowaczyk (2018 Messiah music graduate and student of senior lecturer Randall Zwally) won, through a national competition, a position in the prestigious U. S. Guitar Orchestra. The ensemble will be performing at New York City’s Kaufman Music Center and in a concert tour in Spain’s cities of Madrid, Seville, and Granada.

Division of Student Success and Engagement

Grant awarded to Murray Library

Murray Library, in coordination with the Athletic Training and Applied Health Sciences programs, was awarded a grant from Pennsylvania Grants for Open and Affordable Learning (PA GOAL). PA GOAL is funded through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund and is coordinated through the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. The grant will be used to expand database content and access to the McGraw-Hill AccessPhysiotherapy and the FA Davis Athletic Training databases. E-Textbooks within these databases were chosen and will be used in eight selected courses this academic year. Students in those courses are expected to save thousands of dollars in textbook costs due to the availability of these textbooks in these expanded library resources. Use and student survey data will be used for future subscription decisions. The library wishes to thank faculty in these programs as well as the Office of Finance and Planning, and the Office of Development for their assistance in applying for and using these funds to reduce student textbook costs.

Group Exercise at the Fitness Center

Group exercise is back at the fitness center! We have over 20 classes a week throughout the fall semester. Classes start the week of 8/30 and are free. After that, employees can purchase a $40 membership that gives you access to book into ALL our classes. Just download the Glofox App and type in Falcon Fitness Center as your studio. We hope to see you there!

The School of Science, Engineering and Health is pleased to welcome Vinny Sakore (MBA, CIPT) as our full-time director of cybersecurity education, effective August 1. In this role, Vinny will execute Messiah’s strategic plan to build and manage a top-ranked and comprehensive cybersecurity educational program, including academic programs and industry initiatives. Vinny is not new to Messiah, as he has been a visiting assistant professor of cybersecurity since 2019. Vinny is chief technology officer for NetDiligence and formerly worked for six years as HIPAA Security Office for Verizon until 2017.

Student successfully passes CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Owen Kenny, senior finance major, who successfully passed Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 25,000 candidates sat for the exam worldwide and the pass rate was only 25%. Owen’s score placed him well above the 90th percentile of all candidates who sat for the exam.

We wish Owen continued success as he moves on to Level II of the exam!

Student-parking: instruction for permit pick-up

If you are a new, incoming FIRST YEAR or TRANSFER STUDENT for fall 2021, you may pick-up your Parking Permit at Orientation during Welcome Week, August 20 – 23.

If you are NOT a first year or transfer student, below are the details of where and when to pick-up your parking permit for fall 2021. (Please remember to bring your student ID card with you when you pick-up your permit).

August 22 – 23 with Residence Life room packets during curbside pickup
August 24 – 25 at the Guest Relations Desk in the ECC lobby (1st floor ECC), 8am – 8pm
After August 25 at Student Parking/Box Office, ECC 122, Monday – Friday, 9am – 4pm

The name of the Ticket Office has changed to the “Box Office”

The Messiah University Box Office is utilizing a new ticketing software called PurplePass. Students now have the ability to purchase one (1) MU student ticket per event online through PurplePass with a credit or debit card. The ticketing system requires a valid student ID number in order to get the discounted student rate. We will continue to offer full-service help at the Box Office window for those wishing to purchase tickets with cash, check or Falcon Dollars. We hope that this change allows for greater flexibility and access to purchase tickets for events on campus.

Student parking has moved!

Student Parking has transitioned from Falcon Exchange to Conference and Event Services. Please direct students to the Box Office, located on the 1st floor of the Eisenhower Campus Center, for parking permits and temporary tags. Falcon Exchange will continue to process payments for citations. Safety will continue to handle disputes of citations. Office hours for Student Parking are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
