It is with a heavy heart that Human Resources and Compliance announces the retirement of Sharon Robinson after twenty years of committed service to Messiah. Household items for Smith quarantine apartments

We will continue to use Smith apartments to quarantine individuals during the spring semester as needed. While we received some items last semester to improve these spaces (thank you to those of you who donated!), we are hoping to make them better for next semester.

With Christmas around the corner and New Year’s “out with the old” and “in with the new” mentality, maybe you are replacing some things and looking to donate your old items. Do you have a microwave that you are looking to get rid of? A teapot? Pots and pans? Lamps? Or any other household items that you can imagine in an on campus apartment that someone would be staying in while they are quarantined?

Safety Data Sheets – Updates

Please be reminded that if your department has added any new chemicals in the past year, we must have a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) in our online system for them. This is required for compliance with OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. Also, if your area has discontinued the use of any chemical substance, the SDS in the online system will need to be archived. Due to Donna Fink’s upcoming retirement, all changes, questions and concerns related to SDSs can be directed to Jennifer Smithmyer at jsmithmyer@messiah.edu or ext. 7086.

Division of Finance and Planning announces personnel changes

The Division of Finance and Planning is pleased to announce the following:

JR Harris was promoted from associate director of Student Financial Services to director of Student Financial Services effective Nov. 1. JR has been with Messiah University since June 1, bringing with him over 11 years of experience in higher education, working closely with students and families.

Lora Harper was promoted to the role of assistant controller. She is in charge of completing our University tax filings and is the primary point person on our annual audit team. Lora first started with Messiah in January 2014 in the Falcon Exchange as the assistant bursar and then later as the manager of Financial Services. In her present role she will continue to provide management and cashier window support for all activities and processes in the Falcon Exchange.

Melissa Huntington was promoted earlier this year to the accounting analyst for endowment position. She is responsible for reconciling and recording all activities related to the endowment, gifts, trusts and annuities for the University. In addition, she oversees cash management needs and monitors cash flow. Missy first joined Messiah in October of 2008 as an accounting assistant in Dining Services before transferring to the Finance Division in 2011.

Bryan Stout was promoted to Falcon Exchange coordinator in February. In his present role Bryan will be locally supervising staff, student and employee payments, ID Cards, student parking and campus commerce. Bryan has been with Messiah since 2015 and was most recently in a combined Falcon Exchange and Student Financial Services counselor position.

Nak Chhoeung joined the Student Financial Services team as our graduate and professional counselor in August. Nak previously served at HACC as the director of Financial Aid. He brings a solid depth of knowledge and experience in financial aid, while utilizing his spiritual gifts to serve our graduate and professional students.

Jackie Gehman is now serving our International Students at Messiah. Jackie previously served as our graduate and professional counselor in the graduate school. She brings great experience and understanding of Messiah’s community to holistically support our International students.

Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center Opening – December 4

Update on the Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center – mark your calendar!

I’m excited to announce that on Friday, Dec. 4, we will be opening the Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center. This exciting project was delayed with shutdowns related to COVID, but we are ready to open.

December 1-3 staff from admissions, financial aid/student financial services, registrar’s office and parent and alumni staff are scheduled to move into the building. In order to safely move everyone during this time you are asked to refrain from coming to the building.

On Dec. 4, at 8 a.m., you are invited to come to a socially distanced event where President Phipps and John Chopka will be on-site to officially open the building. Join us at the circle in the front of the building (yes the fence will be down!) for a few words of thanks, prayer and then the opportunity to see the inside of the building. We will be asking everyone to stay socially distanced while in the building.

The week of Dec. 7 we will begin to move staff from Hoffman to Old Main. The contractor will start working the week of Dec. 14 on the demolition of Hoffman with the goal of the building being down before we return students in mid-January. On Tuesday, Nov. 24, the construction fence will be relocated to that part of the site. After Hoffman is demolished the green space will be completed.

I want to thank the campus community for their patience during this project. It is never easy when construction is center of campus and then it is a much longer project than expected. The Admissions and Welcome Center and green space will transform the campus for our community. New parking areas provide needed access to center campus. Young Writers Workshop Journal

This summer the Young Writers Workshop was able to conduct their workshop online. Under the tutelage of Abigail Baia, MFA, School of the Humanities special projects coordinator and published author and Katy Trice 2019 English major alum, 18 students brought their writing skills to the next level! These teen writers spent the last few months writing, editing, and revising the short stories they started during the workshop. Many of these stories let you into the minds of high school students as they deal with the world around them, especially during the pandemic.

Abigail has worked with the students and designed this wonderful journal of the students’ work. When you purchase this journal, all the revenue that Messiah University receives will go to support the scholarship fund for the 2021 Young Writers Workshop.

Blessings and Godspeed to Skulstad Family

As we approach finals, and the end of a very challenging Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Communication would like to say thank you and pray Godspeed and blessings for Professor Nathan Skulstad, his wife Lydia (who worked in Messiah’s Intercultural Office), and their two sweet daughters. They are moving back to Canada to be closer to extended family in early December. We are very sad to see them go, but we are grateful for Nathan’s significant contributions to the growth of our film and digital media programs, his thoughtful insights and sense of humor during our countless department meetings, and his wonderful teaching and mentorship to so many of our students! Messiah University botanist, Janet Matanguihan, has published in the Christ Animated Learning blog through the Christian Scholars Review. The title of her piece, “A Word in Season for the Weary,” is the latest installment in this series. This encouraging word offers Janet’s insights on how we Christian professors can impact our hurting, pandemic-ravaged world.

In addition, last week, Janet published an article entitled “Fundamental Shifts in Research, Ethics and Peer Review in the Era of the COVID-19 Pandemic” in the Journal of Korean Medical Science. Her coauthor is Edward Barroga of the Graduate School of Nursing Science at St. Luke’s International University in Tokyo, Japan.

We celebrate the tremendous professional service of Scott Kieffer, professor of exercise science, who was awarded the service award of the Mid Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. Not only did Scott receive this award; the annual award has been named for him: the H Scott Kieffer Service Award. (Kudos to MARC-ACSM for naming the award while the honoree is living!)

Scott has worked tirelessly for MARC-ACSM for many years, most recently as the executive director. His service has benefited our students, faculty and even our labs with shared equipment. More broadly, he has clearly made his mark on the ACSM organization and his profession.

Four alumni “returned” to campus this fall to give presentations (by Zoom) that included career insights and research descriptions. Christina Fuji ’12 (MOT, OTR/L) and Kevin Markovic’09 (DPT) shared in a presentation entitled, “Career Insights from Alumni: Occupational Therapy & Physical Therapy” on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Stephanie Schell ’13, Ph.D., described experiences in graduate school and Postdoctoral research in a presentation entitled, “Putting the puzzle pieces together: My experiences researching systemic autoimmunity and inflammatory skin disease” on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Arielle Raugh ’17, Ph.D.-candidate, described research aimed at understanding the immune-mediated causes of type I diabetes while maintaining a healthy work-life balance in a seminar entitled, “From Science to Soap: The Making of a Scientist” on Wednesday, Nov. 11. These seminar “visits” were organized and sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences and our local SGA-sponsored chapter of the Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society.

The Department of Human Development and Family Science was well-represented at the 2020 National Council on Family Relations virtual annual conference. Dr. Paul Johns presented, “Husbands’ Experience of Being Trusted by Their Wives: A Rare Focus on Recipients of Trust.” Dr. Raeann Hamon chaired a symposium of six papers entitled, “Expanding High Impact Teaching in Family Theories.” Hamon presented one of the papers, “Illustrating Family Systems Theory with a Family Sculpting Activity.” Hamon also served as past chair of the Advancing Family Science Section, chair-elect of the International Section, and member of the board for the Journal of Family Theory and Review. Dr. Robert Reyes facilitated a plenary entitled, “Global Health Disparities among Families in the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Reyes is also an incoming Board member for NCFR, serving as treasurer. Three HDFS students also virtually attended the conference.

Dr. Emily Farrar, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, has accepted a full-time position as a medical communications consultant with Boston Strategic Partners, a global health industry analytics and communications firm.  She will begin her employment with BSP in December at the close of our fall 2020 semester. The selection process for this position was rigorous and competitive. Congratulations to Emily on her successful application.

Emily is a 2010 graduate of our engineering program and is in her fifth year as an assistant professor. During her time as a Messiah faculty member she has established herself as a talented teacher, accomplished scholar and a well-loved and committed advisor and mentor. Emily has had a significant impact on our biomedical engineering program and on the lives of many of her students.

Global University Trading Challenge

Congratulations to the Messiah University investing team that finished 21st in the global CME University Trading Challenge with an ending portfolio value of $710,125. The annual trading competition, which began Oct. 4, included more than 500 undergraduate and graduate teams from colleges and universities worldwide. Each team begins with a $500,000 notional portfolio to invest in the futures markets and Messiah’s team generated a +42% gain in the month-long competition (compared to the S&P 500 which returned -3% for the month of October).

Messiah’s team outperformed formidable competition from schools such as Cornell, Duke, NYU, University of Chicago, Georgetown, Rutgers and UNC among others.

Congrats to the Messiah University team consisting of Mo Lutz, Makayla Miller and Daniel Preziosi.

Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to conclude the 2020 Fall Senior Series this weekend with the premieres of original productions “Till Death Do We Art” and “Where the Apple Falls: A Julie Andrews Story.” Join us for an evening of performance, created and performed by department seniors Rachel Rochet and Ellen Grace Diehl. Malaria Research

Students Mina Diep and Matthew O’Neil described results of research they are conducting with Larry Mylin (biological sciences) to support ongoing research of the Macha Research Trust (Zambia) at the Future of Malaria Research Conference that was hosted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Malaria Research Institute on Friday, Nov. 13. The shared presentation entitled, “Shelf-life study of Human Erythrocytes Cryopreserved for Laboratory Culture of Plasmodium falciparum” was enthusiastically received by the Zoom audience that included investigators and students from around the globe.

After COVID-19, what is the future of families? – A virtual conversation

This afternoon (today, Nov. 19), the Honors Program is hosting a panel on the question “After COVID-19, what is the future of families?” Five panelists involved in different aspects of family and social services–Dr. Raeann Hamon ,’83 Dr. Erin Boyd-Soisson, Jennifer Grove’97, Jason Lehman ‘04, and Veronica Kelly ’18 will be addressing this question from their respective areas of training and experience. Messiah University botanist, Janet Matanguihan, has published in the Christ Animated Learning blog through the Christian Scholars Review. The title of her piece, “A Word in Season for the Weary”, is the latest installment in this series. This encouraging word offers Janet’s insights on how we Christian professors can impact our hurting, pandemic-ravaged world.

In addition, earlier this week, Janet published an article entitled “Fundamental Shifts in Research, Ethics and Peer Review in the Era of the COVID-19 Pandemic” in the Journal of Korean Medical Science. Her coauthor is Edward Barroga of the Graduate School of Nursing Science at St. Luke’s International University in Tokyo, Japan.

Fall 2020 Shred Day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Shredding Solutions will provide a shred truck on campus. The truck will be located along University Drive in front of the VV lot and will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. This is especially important if you are one of the many that are moving in the next few weeks.

Note: This is a later date than normal due to there not being a fall break this semester.

What can be shredded?

All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.)

Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (a paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Normal shredding needs

Please bring all the paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1:00 PM, we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.).

Special shredding needs

If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, director of information security, at ext. 6790. All shredding arrangements must be made before the close of business Thursday, November 20th.

Due to the anticipated high volume of special arrangements anyone with a move date of November 23/24, that requires the storage of Shred Day documents needs to make arrangements as soon as possible. With the probability of sensitive data that is often shredded on these days, Information Security would like to have the documents securely stored, before your move date, so that the documents are not accidentally moved.

Poster exhibit

Thanks to the generosity of the Smithsonian Institution, Murray Library and Messiah Press present a poster exhibit titled: “Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II”. The exhibit traces the story of Japanese national and Japanese American incarceration during World War II. Young and old lived crowded together in hastily built camps under the constant watch of military guards while brave Japanese American men risked their lives fighting for the United States. The poster exhibition encourages viewers to engage in dialogue about how this happened and through themes of identity, immigration, prejudice, civil rights, courage, and what it means to be an American. The poster exhibit is located on easels throughout the upper level of the library. It will remain on display until the end of the fall semester.

Living in a world that encourages independence, society stigmatizes emotions as a sign of weakness. Humans believe the lie that they are alone in their feelings and brokenness. Many emotions and experiences are universal, but people convince themselves no one else feels the same way. If we could open up to those around us, maybe we could realize that we’re not that different. Everyone has unspoken stories they are yearning to communicate; words give us the power to reclaim our relationships, our perspectives, and our lives.

An off-chance encounter between two strangers gives them the chance to learn from a new perspective. As they start to open up about their hopes and regrets, they discover that maybe they’re not so different after all.

Congratulations to Dr. Mfum-Mensah on his new recently published book, “We Come as Members of the Superior Race: Distortions and Education Policy Discourse in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Westerners have long represented Africans as “backwards,” “primitive,” and “unintelligent,” distortions which have opened the door for American philanthropies to push their own education agendas in Africa. We Come as Members of the Superior Race discusses the origin and history of these dangerous stereotypes and western “infantilization” of African societies, exploring how their legacy continues to inform contemporary educational and development discourses. By viewing African societies as subordinated in a global geopolitical order, these problematic stereotypes continue to influence education policy and research in Sub-Sahara Africa today.

Young Writers Workshop Journal

This summer the Young Writers Workshop was able to conduct their workshop online. Under the tutelage of Abigail Baia, MFA, School of the Humanities special projects coordinator and published author and Katy Trice 2019 English major alum, 18 students brought their writing skills to the next level! These teen writers spent the last few months writing, editing, and revising the short stories they started during the workshop. Many of these stories let you into the minds of high school students as they deal with the world around them, especially during the pandemic.

Abigail has worked with the students and designed this wonderful journal of the students’ work. When you purchase this journal, all the revenue that Messiah University receives will go to support the scholarship fund for the 2021 Young Writers Workshop.

Dr. Dottie Weigel (graduate program in higher education) presented with two graduate students who are part of the GA Partnership Program: Maggie Bolden (Gonzaga University) and Malissa Giannetti (Catawba College) at the 2020 NASPA Careers in Student Affairs Conference. The conference presentation focused on using critical reflection as a strategy to narrow the search for graduate internships and career opportunities in higher education.

Beth Transue ’93, information literacy librarian, co-presented with Rob Lesher ’93, PaLA PA forward program manager, and Robin Vittek, director of Mt. Lebanon Library, at the Pennsylvania Library Association annual conference. The presentation, “Big Statements with Project Outcome” provided examples of assessment using an assessment tool, Project Outcome in public and academic library settings. Beth presented how Murray Library uses Project Outcome to assess student perception of information literacy sessions in First Year Seminar and Created and Called for Community.

Ready for some laughs? Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present Aristophanes’ classic Greek comedy “The Birds,” which premieres Thursday Oct. 29 and runs throughout the week to Tuesday Nov. 3. Performances will be free and available for viewing on the Messiah Livestream!

Written by Aristophanes, “The Birds” is a comedy looking at demagogues and their rise to power. The story follows Pisthetaerus and Euelpides, two Athenians who set out in search of a better life. Eschewing the city life they’ve known— which is crowded, noisy, and full of annoying pests such as poets, lawyers, philosophers, and tax collectors— they seek out Epops, King of the Birds, who might advise them of the ideal place to settle. However, seeing the life of the birds, the two decide to convince Epops and the rest of the birds to build a Utopian city in the sky called Cloud Cuckoo Land!

Performances are Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 2-3 @ 8 p.m., and Nov. 1 @ 3 p.m.

Fall 2020 Shred Day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, Shredding Solutions will provide a shred truck on campus. The truck will be located along University Drive in front of the VV lot and will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. This is especially important if you are one of the many that are moving in the next few weeks.

Note: This is a later date than normal due to there not being a fall break this semester.

What can be shredded?

All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.)

Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (a paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Please bring all the paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1:00 PM, we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.).

Special shredding needs

If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, director of information security, at ext. 6790. All shredding arrangements must be made before the close of business Thursday, November 20th.

Due to the anticipated high volume of special arrangements anyone with a move date of November 23/24, that requires the storage of Shred Day documents needs to make arrangements as soon as possible. With the probability of sensitive data that is often shredded on these days, Information Security would like to have the documents securely stored, before your move date, so that the documents are not accidentally moved and

Career and Internship Expo – Wednesday, Nov. 4

Regardless of where students are at in their college journey, the CPDC’s annual Expo is a great opportunity to explore future internship, summer, seasonal, and/or full time job options. This year’s event will held online using Handshake. Students will have the opportunity to interact with employers in 1:1 or group settings via video chats.

Educators are also welcome to attend any employer group sessions to learn more about various organizations, and are encouraged to share the info about the Expo with their students of all class years and majors.

DNP progam granted accreditation

I am pleased to announce that the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) granted accreditation to the Messiah University Doctor of Nursing Practice program. The accreditation is for the maximum length of time (five years) and extends to Dec. 31, 2025. While the vote happened this fall, the accreditation action is effective as of March 2, the first day of the program’s recent CCNE on-site evaluation. The program met all accreditation standards with no compliance concerns. Special thanks to Dr. Kim Fenstermacher, Dr. Kristen Slabaugh, Dr. Louann Zinsmeister, Dr. Nancy Woods, Beth Aumen, Ashley Ringquist, Lisa Brubaker, and additional faculty, staff and administrators who have worked over the past several years to successfully launch Messiah University’s first doctoral program and to be granted CCNE accreditation.
