Brothers Polyneices and Eteocles died at each other’s sword. The newly appointed King Creon praises Eteocles as worthy of a burial with military honors but deems Polyneices a traitor to his country and decrees he shall be left unburied. Antigone is a fierce battle of wills between Antigone, who believes in loyalty to family and honor to the divine, and Creon, who believes in loyalty to the state and honor to the law. Antigone was written in roughly 441 BC, but its themes of fervent activism, feminism, political dissent, and justice make this play so relevant, it could have been written yesterday. This production places the action of the story in the present day and uses a modern lens to view an ancient story.

Performances are Oct. 1-3 & 5-7 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.

Dr. Kristen Slabaugh was selected to participate in the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Mentoring Program for the 2020-2021 academic year. Each participant is paired with an experienced nurse practitioner (NP) leader and provided with opportunities to further develop leadership knowledge and skills associated with the NP educator role. Congratulations, Dr. Slabaugh!

Ted Davis, professor of the history of science, will do a Zoom talk for Dartmouth College students at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. The presentation, “Swallowing a Modern Jonah: How Not to Defend Christian Faith,” is based on a research project he did 20 years ago that was featured on two BBC radio programs. The scientific journal Diversity recently published a study by professor of biology and environmental science, Dr. Erik Lindquist, with research colleagues from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, University of Panama, University of the Andes (Colombia), and San Diego State University. Their research article, represents the first complete examination of species phylogenetics, geographic distribution and paleogeology related to the critically endangered harlequin frogs of Central America. Lindquist will be co-presenting their findings at the 1st International Electronic Conference on Biological Diversity, Ecology and Evolution in March 2021.

While working remotely for an extended period of time, you may get a Microsoft Activation Error or an error regarding missing Windows updates. To resolve this, please connect to Open VPN and work while connected for a day. This should resolve the issue. If it does not, please email helpdesk@messiah.edu for further assistance.

Congratulations to assistant professor of Computer and Information Science Dr. Devi Suberi for his selection to participate in a virtual course on science, Christianity and society in 2020-21. This initiative, sponsored by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford (SCIO), a UK subsidiary of the CCCU, is funded by the John Templeton Foundation and includes 8 pre-tenured faculty who will engage with leading scholars including Peter Harrison, Elaine Ecklund, Philip Clayton, Tremper Longman, Benno van den Toren, and Sarah Lane Ritchie to examine the larger social and cultural contexts within which science is located, and to reflect on specific intersections between science and those contexts.

Last spring Scott Kieffer had 2 student-led research projects accepted for poster presentations at the Experimental Biology Conference. Josh Beiler submitted his ongoing research entitled The Effect of Caffeine and 1976T>C (ADORA2A) Genetic Variants on Anaerobic Performance during a 30-Second Wingate Test and Roise Hartman submitted a study entitled The Effects of an Acute Bout of Controlled Breathing on Short-Term Heart Rate Variability. Although the conference was cancelled, the students work was posted at the virtual conference and their abstracts were published in the FASEB Journal. Michael Shin was also a lead author on the caffeine and genetics study.

In addition, Scott’s research mentee, Caleb Smith, was awarded a 2019 American Physiological Association Summer Research Fellowship to conduct research in a mentorship program at Hershey Medical Center. His research from the program entitled Astroglial Regulation of Caloric Intake Following Acute High-Fat Diet Exposure was also presented at the Experimental Biology Conference and was awarded one of the outstanding undergraduate research awards.

Experimental Biology is an interdisciplinary scientific conference that routinely hosts 12,000+ attendees from over 50 countries.

The Office of Financial Aid is pleased to welcome Lori McGill Sarago as a financial aid counselor. Lori, a Messiah alum who began her new job on June 29,  replaces Ryan Hannigan, who has retired. Lori comes to our office with a variety of work experience in higher education having spent approximately the last nine years providing both admissions and financial aid services to students through several third-party organizations such as Emerge Education.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions welcomes TyJon (TJ) Culclasure and Chad Muise as our two new admissions counselors filling roles vacated by Rachael Haqq and Randy Ness. TJ graduated from Messiah in 2019 with a degree in ethnic and area studies, having also served as a resident assistant. Chad graduated with a B.A. in communication degree from Houghton College, worked there and at Tyndale University as an admissions counselor, and just finished serving as graduate assistant in athletics with our baseball team as he completed his M.A. in higher education from Messiah. Chad will also be serving Admissions as the liaison to the Department of Athletics and the School of Humanities.

The Office of Admissions is pleased to report the following promotions: Nate Litman has been promoted to assistant director of admissions and will serve as the admissions liaison to The Messiah University Honors Program. Congratulations to Kristin Thomas in her promotion to associate director of admissions, visit and event programming and Molly Janczyk in her promotions to associate director of admissions.

EM is sad to announce the departure of associate vice president for enrollment management, Sarah Wade, after nearly twelve years of dedicated service over two appointments from 2001-2005 and 2013-2020. Her commitment and passion for Messiah has been evident in the leadership she has shown in our division and on many task forces across campus. We wish her the best as she pursues a new career opportunity with VEMO Education.

ROOM RESERVATIONS

Prior to making a room reservation, please be sure to read the “Events at Messiah University” section of the return plan.

A few important notes to remember from the plan:

All meetings and events are encouraged to be virtual whenever possible. To request a room reservation, you must provide a rationale for why the event must be held in-person.

Updated room capacities may be found in EMS. You may not exceed this capacity.

Rooms must be taken as-is. Due to classes being held in non-traditional spaces and the need to maintain the integrity of social distancing, we cannot adjust the furniture.

No guests are allowed to attend events on campus.

Be aware of the additional requirements surrounding accessibility and copyright outlined in the linked plan.

Indoor events are limited to 25 people in a space. Outdoor gatherings are limited to 250 people.

WHAT IS EMS?

EMS (Event Management Systems) is the university’s scheduling software. By using EMS you can make the reservation much faster, see which vehicles and rooms are available for any date and time, place a “hold” on the vehicle or location, answer the required COVID-related questions, and provide verification of approval. Conference Service can usually begin the approval process the same day as the request is made, and will give final approval to your request within a day or two. At this time, individual students are not permitted to have an EMS account. However, if they belong to a recognized student group, that group may have or establish an account.

CREATING AN EMS ACCOUNT

Setting up your EMS account is a simple two-step process:

STEP 1

• On the Internet, log onto http://ems.messiah.edu/emswebapp/ . This will bring you to the Campus Schedule page.

• For “User Id” and “Password”, use your normal credentials, (if you are setting up an account for your group, use your group’s “User Id and “Password”) then click on “Login”. You’ve just created your account. You should see your status as Pending and needing approval from an administrator (Conference Services).

• At this point, you can exit the website.
• Send an email to our office at roomres@messiah.edu to let us know that you have completed STEP 1.

STEP 2

• When we receive your email, we will configure your account and send an email back to you with your next set of instructions. Please note that this may take a day or two, but once this is complete, your account will be ready to use.

Thank you for allowing us to help you process your vehicle and room reservations more efficiently and effectively. We are looking forward to serving the campus this semester.

Engle Center Counselor Aubrey Kleinfeld was interviewed for the Aug. 26 episode of the InterVarsity podcast, “All Shall Be Well.” Aubrey was interviewed by Master’s in Counseling graduate Caroline Triscik, who also served as an Engle Center counseling intern in the 2019-2020 school year. This past spring, Messiah’s capstone marketing class, Marketing Management and Strategy, taught by professor of marketing David Hagenbuch, won second place in the 2020 Marketing Plan Competition sponsored by the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Marketing Association. The ‘live case’ focused on United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s need to gain more Gen Z and Millennial donors.

Other teams participating in the annual competition include schools such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, and West Virginia University. Marketing professionals judge the schools’ written marketing plans. Last year, Messiah took first place in the competition. Messiah University is the only school to place in the top three each of the last three years.

Due to COVID19 restrictions and requirements, Conference & Event Services is no longer able to process

vehicle reservations or room reservations via email, phone or walk-up requests. Therefore, Messiah vehicle

and room requests must be processed through an EMS account.

VEHICLE RESERVATIONS

Prior to making a vehicle reservation, please be sure to read the “Managing Institutional Travel” section of

The Bridge to Reopen Messiah website.

A few important notes to remember from the plan:

All travel will require prior approval from the President, employee’s vice president, or Provost’s Cabinetlevel

supervisor (dean, vice-provost, associate provost, provost).

Information related to J-term and spring semester travel will be communicated in the future.

Due to social distancing requirements, please note the maximum capacity when using Messiah vehicles:

Vans – up to 5 persons (1 person per row. Removing any row(s) of seats decreases this number);

Mini-Vans – 3 persons; Cars – 2 persons.

ROOM RESERVATIONS

Prior to making a room reservation, please be sure to read the “Events at Messiah University” section of the

return plan.

A few important notes to remember from the plan:

All meetings and events are encouraged to be virtual whenever possible. To request a room reservation,

you must provide a rationale for why the event must be held in-person.

Updated room capacities may be found in EMS. You may not exceed this capacity.

Rooms must be taken as-is. Due to classes being held in non-traditional spaces and the need to maintain

the integrity of social distancing, we cannot adjust the furniture.

No guests are allowed to attend events on campus.

Be aware of the additional requirements surrounding accessibility and copyright outlined in the linked

plan.

Indoor events are limited to 25 people in a space. Outdoor gatherings are limited to 250 people.

WHAT IS EMS?

EMS (Event Management Systems) is the university’s scheduling software. By using EMS you can make the reservation much faster, see which vehicles and rooms are available for any date and time, place a “hold” on the vehicle or location, answer the required COVID-related questions, and provide verification of approval. Conference Service can usually begin the approval process the same day as the request is made, and will give final approval to your request within a day or two. At this time, individual students are not permitted to have an EMS account. However, if they belong to a recognized student group, that group may have or establish an account.

CREATING AN EMS ACCOUNT

Setting up your EMS account is a simple two-step process:

STEP 1

 On the Internet, log onto http://ems.messiah.edu/emswebapp/ . This will bring you to the Campus

Schedule page.

 For “User Id” and “Password”, use your normal credentials, (if you are setting up an account for your

group, use your group’s “User Id and “Password”) then click on “Login”. You’ve just created your

account. You should see your status as Pending and needing approval from an administrator

(Conference Services).

 At this point, you can exit the website.

 Send an email to our office at roomres@messiah.edu to let us know that you have completed STEP 1.

STEP 2

 When we receive your email, we will configure your account and send an email back to you with your

next set of instructions. Please note that this may take a day or two, but once this is complete, your account will be ready to use.

Thank you for allowing us to help you process your vehicle and room reservations more efficiently and effectively. We are looking forward to serving the campus this semester.

Sanitizing Stations: Please use the spray bottles (disinfectant) to moisten paper towels to assure that any space you plan to use is properly cleaned prior to use. Sanitizing Stations are located on both levels.
Self-Check-out: To provide “contact-less” check-out, we are happy to provide a station at the Circulation Desk with easy instructions for swiping your ID card, scanning the item you wish to check out, desensitizing the item, and receiving a printout of the due date. A desk attendant is there to assist you as needed.

Registrar’s Office welcomes new employees

The Registrar’s Office welcomed two new employees this summer – Olivia Warner, records and registration assistant; and Ed Wichrowski, senior associate registrar for the School of Graduate Studies.

Olivia’s first day at Messiah was July 6. Her office is located in Old Main Registrar’s Office. Olivia graduated from Geneva College this past May with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Languages, Biblical Studies and Linguistics.

Ed’s first day at Messiah was Aug. 3. His office is located in the administrative suite at Winding Hill. Ed comes to Messiah with 10 years of Enrollment Management and Registrar’s Office experience at Eastern Nazarene College.

Finance major added to CMT Academic Partner Program

The Department of Business is pleased to announce that the finance major has been accepted by the Chartered Market Technicians (CMT) Association as part of its Academic Partner Program. The CMT credential is the preeminent, global designation for practitioners of technical analysis and Institutions in the Academic Partner Program demonstrate academic excellence in the teaching of behavioral finance to portfolio management and other key aspects of technical analysis. Students in the finance major will receive scholarships to take the CMT exams and will now have the ability to pursue both their CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and CMT charters. State of the University Address

The inaugural State of the University address will be delivered by President Kim Phipps via livestream on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 9:30 a.m. during the regularly scheduled Chapel time. As per usual, the written transcript of the President’s address and the accompanying presentation, including a new companion document to the address, will be posted in the days just following the speech for your reference. Community pastor announcement

As we consider Christian faith formation and discipleship on campus in 2020/21, Doug Curry and Mina Choi will be giving leadership to a variety of programs and opportunities for students. Since large gatherings will not be possible, the chapel requirement will be waived. Yet, in order to maintain spiritual vitality on campus, Campus Ministries plans to offer the following programs and resources to encourage personal and communal spiritual disciplines:

1. Each Tuesday the Campus Ministries team will launch an online chapel experience, on Thursday a podcast with community members reflecting on the chapel message will launch and during chapel time several online six-week chapel series options will continue to be offered. Each Monday President Phipps will provide a devotional for the community, on Wednesday student ministry leaders will provide a devotional, and on Friday the devotional will be expressed through the arts. Be sure to check your weekly email for links to these offerings.

2. Life Groups, Bible study groups, and prayer ministries will be offered – both in-person and virtually – by student ministry leaders from Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Prayer Outreach Team, and the Logos Ministry Team. These discipleship-based ministries will forge intentional relationships with spiritual accountability, and nurture our students to grow in Biblical literacy and spiritual formation. Students will have the option to sign up for any of these groups individually, or by Residence Hall/Apartment floors to be led and mentored by Student Ministries leaders.

3. Campus Ministries will craft a resource center within FalconLink to provide further discipleship and Christian faith formation resources. This resource center will provide tools for student leaders, employees, and students seeking to explore pathways for continued growth and/or mentoring, and for community members to express prayer concerns and requests for pastoral counseling.

4. Students will be encouraged to get involved with local churches that verify compliance with the University’s risk reduction measures and health practices. This listing will also include streaming options for which our students can participate remotely. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate church bus or van transportation at this time so students will need to coordinate their own transportation. This information has been communicated to local congregations.

In addition, in the absence of a Campus Pastor this year, Stephen Gallaher has agreed to fulfill a one year temporary position as community pastor, primarily serving the spiritual needs of employees. In this role he will…

-Provide regular times of prayer and short devotional for employees. This will be delivered virtually.

PA Student Employee of the Year

Back in April, Rebecca Lauver ’20 was announced as Pennsylvania’s Student Employee of the Year! Rebecca (biology major) served for two years as the biodiversity coordinator in the Office of Sustainability where she managed a multi-year reforestation project planting more than 600 trees in partnership with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Her award-winning work helped secure a job with the Alliance for the Chesapeake where she will carry out her passion and skillset in conservation around central Pennsylvania. Many thanks to the Student Employment team for selecting Rebecca and the Office of Sustainability to represent Messiah.

Last spring Amy Porto encouraged a group of four students in her research course (NUTR 426) to submit their abstract for consideration at our national meeting (Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo). We are excited to report, it has been accepted as a poster presentation.

Unfortunately the meeting will be held virtually this year but the students are thrilled and honored to be able to present their research at this level.

Collaboratory director announced

The Department of Engineering and the School of Science, Engineering, and Health are pleased to welcome Dr. Darren Hercyk as director of the Collaboratory. Dr. Hercyk has a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology and a master’s in international/global studies and DM in from Liberty University. He spent 11 years working in missions’ administration in Africa and Asia with Compassion International, Save the Children, and Catholic Relief Services before serving in administration and adjunct teaching in Global Studies at Liberty University. Darren began his role as Collaboratory director on July 1. The Collaboratory, now restructured into the Department of Engineering, is an engineering-focused yet interdisciplinary service organization pursuing the mission of increasing hope and transforming lives through real-world application of professional disciplines, Christian discipleship, and partnership with marginalized communities.

Residence Life welcomes new employees and cool changes

With the departures of several veteran members of the Residence Life team, we are pleased to welcome Curtis Kurtz, who will be serving as the RD of Sollenberger and Mellinger, Tovah Wilson, RD for Miller and Fry, and Rebecca Firstbrook, RD for Hess and Kelly. In addition, Josiah Hatfield and Amy Nicols have assumed new positions. Josiah is serving as the assistant director of Residence Life for the First Year Experience and is now the RD for Bittner hall. Amy is our new assistant director of Residence Life for the Upper Class Experience and is now the RD for Mountain View, special interest housing, and one of two apartment buildings in OakWood Hills. Other changes include Beth Moshier as RD for Naugle Hall, Caleb Miller, RD for Witmer Hall, and Julie Price, also assuming responsibility for one of two apartment buildings in OakWood Hills

Registrar’s Office welcomes new employees

The Registrar’s Office welcomed two new employees this summer – Olivia Warner, records and registration assistant; and Ed Wichrowski, senior associate registrar for the School of Graduate Studies.

Olivia’s first day at Messiah was July 6. Her office is located in Old Main Registrar’s Office. Olivia graduated from Geneva College this past May with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Languages, Biblical Studies and Linguistics.

Ed’s first day at Messiah was August 3. His office is located in the administrative suite at Winding Hill. Ed comes to Messiah with 10 years of Enrollment Management and Registrar’s Office experience at Eastern Nazarene College.

Finance Major added to CMT Academic Partner Program

The Department of Business is pleased to announce that the finance major has been accepted by the Chartered Market Technicians (CMT) Association as part of its Academic Partner Program. The CMT credential is the preeminent, global designation for practitioners of technical analysis and Institutions in the Academic Partner Program demonstrate academic excellence in the teaching of behavioral finance to portfolio management and other key aspects of technical analysis. Students in the finance major will receive scholarships to take the CMT exams and will now have the ability to pursue both their CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and CMT charters. NEW! Virtual employer sessions and listing of all online services

Greetings from the CPDC! We have transitioned many of our services to online formats and are including information on those below. In particular, we’d like to highlight a series of opportunities for students to connect with employers via virtual employer info sessions, which will be taking place via Zoom Webinar. A listing of sessions scheduled to date is attached. As you can imagine, the pandemic will certainly have unique effects on our students who are engaging in job and internship searches, so it is important for them to stay connected. Your assistance in encouraging students to participate in these virtual events is greatly appreciated. We anticipate that many more virtual employer events will be added in the future, and as such our Upcoming Events page (https://www.messiah.edu/info/23069/upcoming_events) will be kept up to date with all sessions. Career coaching appointments Career coaching appointments will continue to be available on topics such as choosing/changing a major, exploring career options, planning for an internship, searching for a job, applying to graduate school, resume writing and interviewing. Resume reviews Resume reviews can be conducted in an appointment format as noted above, or students can simply email a draft to career@messiah.edu.

Internships and jobs Internship and job postings will continue to be added to the Handshake portal regularly. A weekly email with new postings will be sent out to all students. Students looking to secure an internship for the summer or fall should begin planning for these experiences. Seniors in the job searching process should check out the content in the “Job Search” section of our website. Questions related to either of these topics can be discussed with a career coach by scheduling an appointment.

Virtual workshops and events Virtual events and videos that feature employer info sessions, workshops on job/internship searching, resume writing, interviewing are being scheduled! Follow us on Facebook or Instagram for notifications on when these are happening and other exclusive content.

Mock interviews Students can practice interviewing and receive feedback virtually through our online tool Big Interview or via a Zoom appointment with a career coach. We anticipate that many employers will be conducting interviews virtually with prospective interns and job candidates.

Giving Day 2020: date change

Dear faculty, staff and administrators, In light of recent events with COVID-19, we have decided to push the College’s Giving Day back to Thursday, April 30. There is a lot going on in our world, which is why we feel even more committed to our students and have decided to move forward in raising funds to support them. On April 30, we will ask our Messiah Community to rally behind the men and women we teach, mentor, work with and care about. We will be specifically raising funds to support The Good Samaritan Fund and the Messiah Fund, both of which will allow us to best meet the direct needs of our students and our ability to serve them during this pandemic. Despite the closure of campus, WVMM-Pulse Radio continues to broadcast both over the air at 90.7 FM and online at pulse.messiah.edu. Thesis presentation

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to invite members of the campus community to a thesis presentation by Emma Cartisano. In partial fulfillment of her M.A. in Higher Education and under direction of her thesis advisor, Dr. Cynthia Wells, Emma’s research focused on “The impact of faculty growth mindset on student mindset and learning engagement”. Growth mindset is the belief that general intellectual ability is malleable and can be developed This presentation will describe the presence and cultivation of growth mindset in the academic experiences of six undergraduate students in the social sciences at a medium-sized, liberal arts and sciences college. Individual interviews and syllabi were analyzed using narrative inquiry to explore the impact of instructor philosophy and pedagogy on student mindset and learning engagement. Research findings highlight that instructor embodiment of growth mindset, including relationality, modeling, and constructive delivery of feedback, as well as assignment design were instrumental. Participants did not share a common definition of growth mindset but that concepts of competence, grace, and grit were shared. Additionally, participants recognized that mindset exists on a continuum and articulated one or more ways they experienced a shift in their mindset. Recommendations for further research and pedagogical practice will be provided.
