The Messiah College Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate DPD Program won the School Spirit Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The award recognizes the program with the largest percentage of their enrolled students attending the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (the national conference for dietitians). The prize for winning this award included a private reception with the Academy President and Board of Directors and an invitation to attend the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Gala at the conference on Oct. 28 in Philadelphia.

Dennis Weller, conference and events coordinator, has earned his CCEP (designation as a Collegiate Conference and Events Professional) through the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors International. The ACCED-I CCEP is designed to elevate professional standards, evaluate individual performance, and to recognize those who have reached a very high level of achievement in conference and events management. As a CCEP, successful candidates demonstrate that they have the desire, determination and ability to be among the very best in the collegiate-based conference and events management profession. Congratulations, Dennis!

The Department of Nursing is pleased to announce that the official first-time pass rate of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for the cohort of 2019 was 100%. This exceeds the 80% mandate by the State Board of Nursing. Congratulations to faculty and staff on this achievement.

“Postcards from the Unknown” Nora Sturges Exhibition; Artist’s Talk and Reception

Please join us for the opening of “Postcards from the Unknown” Nora Sturges Exhibition, Dec. 6 – Jan. 29, 2020, Climenhaga Building, Aughinbaugh Art Gallery. The Artist’s Talk and Reception is Friday, Dec. 6, 4:15 p.m. in the Climenhaga Building, Aughinbaugh Art Gallery.

Nora Sturges: My paintings depict edges of human habitation— outposts in the wilderness of the arctic and overlooked margins of densely populated areas nearer home. The familiar landscapes examine both the practical and unplanned ways we transform our visual environment, while the arctic scenes offer evidence of our attempts to live in, understand and improve our world, set against the unknowable vastness of nature itself.

2019 Nobel Prize Seminar – Dec. 3

Please plan to attend the 10th annual “Nobel Prize Seminar” on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 5:15 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). The seminar includes Nobel prizes awarded in physics presented by Dr. Abaz Kryemadhi, chemistry presented by Dr. Rick Schaeffer, and medicine presented by Dr. Michael Shin. Refreshments will be served beginning at 5 p.m.

Holiday Open House at the Oakes Museum

Visit the Oakes Museum of Natural History on Saturday Dec. 7 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. for our annual Holiday Open House! Make and take crafts, door prizes, a photo booth, free admission for everyone, sales in the museum gift shop, cookies and more make this a fun event for the whole family!

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

The second annual West Shore Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday evening, Nov. 24, at p.m. at the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church (125 E. Main Street). Messiah College’s Peace and Conflict Studies Program is jointly sponsoring the event along with the Mechanicsburg Council of Churches and local Muslim and Jewish communities. Rev. Anthony Eseke, assistant professor of communications, will be one of the speakers and Randy Zwally, senior lecturer in guitar, will be providing music before and during the service. A light meal will follow, and non-perishable food donations for New Hope Ministries will be accepted. Farewell reception for Erin Beck and Cady Sullivan

For everything there is a season and for two of our Development colleagues, the time has come to change seasons. Erin Beck and Cady Sullivan will be leaving Messiah on Nov. 26.

Erin served first as grants coordinator and then grants manager for the past 10 years. In that time, she has distinguished herself as an effective, efficient, and diligent employee. Not only has she led our grants efforts in Development, she has also served as a key liaison to all faculty writing grants, and to the Office of Human Resources on all grant compliance issues. Further, she has led the college-wide effort to ensure (as required by law) that Messiah is a registered charity in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. And she has been a key player in our FAN Golf Outing. It has been a joy to work with Erin and I know you join me in wishing her the best as she becomes senior associate to the president at Millersville University.

Cady is both a graduate and long-term leader of our Phonathon and Digital Philanthropy efforts. She has done an exemplary job with ensuring our Phonathon is run at the highest level. Further, she led our first ever Giving Day, which continues to be a significant fundraising event for us. And Cady was critical to our expanded and greatly enhanced web/online giving presence, which has vastly improved our ability to raise online support. It has been a privilege to work with Cady and we offer best wishes as she starts her new position as director of annual giving at the UPMC/Pinnacle Foundation.

Seeking singers for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony

Messiah College Choral Arts Society seeks singers for our spring 2020 season, which includes a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and an Opera Pops concert with the Messiah Symphony Orchestra. Faculty, staff, students and community members are welcome to participate. Auditions will take place on Dec. 10 and Jan. 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the High Center. Choral Arts Society rehearses on Tuesdays from 7:15-9:30 p.m. during the spring semester. Congratulations to Doug Phillippy (mathematics) and Mindy Smith (health, nutrition, and exercise science) for their outstanding performances at this past weekend’s Harrisburg Marathon. Both ran times that qualify them for the 2021 Boston Marathon!

Dr. Maude Yacapsin, of the Graduate Program in Education, has been selected by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, to participate in the review of accredited, educator prep programs (EPP’s) ensuring that proper teaching standards are fully implemented for these programs. CAEP accreditation is widely considered as the top teaching program-specific accreditation body for education leaders and professionals. The CAEP commission has a structure for the standards that were identified as a must by the National Academy of Sciences 2010 report, Preparing Teachers: Building Evidence for Sound Policy. The NAS panel research found that there were nearly a dozen factors that likely had strong effects on student outcomes of content knowledge, field experience, and quality of teacher candidates. Thus, CAEP adopted multiple standards and are listed in the full document at CAEPnet.org. Dr. Yacapsin will review EPP’s, throughout the US, including US territories, for adherence to these standards.

Dwayne Safer, CFA, assistant professor of finance, recently passed the Level 2 exam of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) program. As a result of successful completion of the exams, he has received the prestigious CAIA designation and is one of 11,000 global investment professionals with demonstrated expertise in alternative investment valuation and analysis.

Do you need to reserve a vehicle for an upcoming trip, but are not sure what to do or how to get started? Perhaps the following information will answer your questions and help you get on your way:

The recommended and most efficient way to reserve a vehicle is through your EMS Account. The advantage of using EMS is that you have the ability to see which vehicles are available for your desired dates/times, and you are able to select the specific vehicle(s) you want to use.

Through EMS, you will also provide necessary reservation information such as:

Specific dates for your travel
Specific pick-up and drop-off times
Destination
Driver’s Name
Group or Department using the vehicle(s)

(If you do not currently have an EMS Account, please contact Randy Heintzelman at 7227, and he will set-up the account for you).

Prior to your travel, you can calculate the estimated cost of your vehicle reservation by using the Messiah College Vehicle Selection Worksheet found on FalconLink. This worksheet provides a helpful tool to calculate the Total Cost and the Cost per Mile for your trip.

Safe Driving Program (FalconLink) – This training program provides critical information related to the College Vehicle Policy, Driver Safety, Accidents and/or Damage to Vehicles, and much more. You must review this program and provide the signature page (last page) along with your other documents when applying for Approved Driver status. We also encourage you to review the training if you are renewing your status. (Student renewal is every year; Employee renewal is every two years).

Documents needed for Approved Driver status:
Approved Driver Application (FalconLink)
MVR Request Authorization Form (FalconLink)
Proof of Insurance (declaration page showing you as an insured driver, if it is a parent’s policy)
Signature Page from Safe Driving Program (FalconLink)

(Van Testing is scheduled through FalconLink after your documents are processed and you receive Approved Driver notification).

Additional tips to remember:
- Reserve your vehicle as far in advance as possible to ensure availability. The reservation calendar is often very full, and if you wait until the last minute to reserve a vehicle, there might not be one available for you, and you will need to rent a vehicle instead.
- Cancel your reservation as soon as you know you will no longer need the vehicle to allow availability for someone else who may need it. If you do not cancel your reservation, you will be charged a $25 Non-Cancellation Fee.
- If you have questions or concerns regarding a reservation, please provide the Reservation Number when seeking assistance to ensure that the correct reservation is referenced. If you do not know the Reservation Number, the date(s) and destination is always helpful.
- Pick-up and drop-off vehicle keys at the Receptionist desk (ECC Lobby). If the Receptionist is not available, the Ticket Office or Dispatch will help you.

“The State of Religious Freedom in the World Today”

Daniel C. Holtrop of the U.S. State Department will speak about “The State of Religious Freedom in the World Today” on Monday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. in Parmer Cinema [Boyer 137]. Holtrop has been with the State Department for many years, first serving as Chief in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs within the Office of International Religious Freedom. Currently, he serves as Deputy Director in the Office of Verification, Planning, and Outreach within the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance. This event is sponsored by the College Honors Program and is open to the entire college community. Students interested in exploring vocations relating to international relations or human rights are especially encouraged to attend.

Cat Available for Adoption. Male brown tabby cat, approximately two years old, available for adoption (free to an indoor only home). He’s very sweet and social, and would make a wonderful companion – he just let me pick him up and carry him inside my house, and then went right to sleep once he was inside and warm. He is good with a litter box, up to date on his vaccines, tested negative for FeLV/FIV, and has been treated for fleas and worms. Will be neutered prior to adoption. Pictures available upon request. Paula Hoffman, who has been serving as the Bittner residence director and assistant director of residence life – first year experience, has decided to pursue new opportunities outside of Residence Life, which includes serving part-time as a counselor for In Him Christian Wellness. Ines Yoon, who has currently been serving as interim Bittner residence director, will continue as full-time Bittner RD through May 2020. Please direct any Bittner matters to Ines (iyoon@messiah.edu). Josiah Hatfield has agreed to continue as interim assistant director through May 2020. Any first year experience matters should be directed to Josiah (jhatfield@messiah.edu). Visiting Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity Vinayak Sakore attended the NetDiligence Cyber Risk Summit in Santa Monica, CA, Oct. 15-17. This interactive workshop revolves around a simulated ransomware cyber-attack. Vinny hosted a 90-minute tabletop discussion and led a session on cyber threat intelligence.

Five Messiah College Department of Business students (Sarah Blessing, James Chopka, Courtney Hampton, Corinne Mahoney and Noah Thomas) recently traveled to Williamsport to compete in the Innovation Challenge, part of America250PA, a statewide initiative aimed at engaging Pennsylvanians in the commemoration and celebration of the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. Messiah College’s integrated marketing communication (IMC) plan was one of two chosen from the northwest region to advance to the state finale, which will be held in Wilkes-Barre on Nov. 19. Professor of Marketing David Hagenbuch is leading the team.

Learning Technology Services would like to remind the faculty that it’s not too early to begin planning ahead. The 2020 J-Term and spring semester work submission deadlines have been set. Please coordinate your needs for your courses with the deadline dates located on the ITS blog at the following link: http://blogs.messiah.edu/its/archives/7810 Procedure review:

Messiah faculty are notified of the semester work submission deadlines by the administrative assistant to ITS/copyright specialist (Diane Hunsinger) approximately 4-6 weeks before the materials are due. This allows ample time to obtain copyright clearance for course materials (if necessary) and production of your course pack in College Press.
Faculty must complete the online course materials form located on the ITS blog at this link: http://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/331/en/use_of_copyrighted_course_material. The online form allows you to enter/attach your copyright clearance requests, automatically creates the work requisition, and allows you to attach a PDF file of your course pack or lab manual.
It is imperative that faculty who plan to sell a course pack/lab manual to students notify Aleisha Wildon, course materials manager at the Campus Store and Textbook Express.
VERY IMPORTANT: Following the deadlines allows ample time for production, ensures our students have a positive experience when purchasing and receiving their course materials and the instructor has the assurance that their course pack is available for students to purchase before classes begin.

Contract investigators conducting reference/background checks on campus

The Department of Safety wants to remind all employees of the protocol in place for contract investigators coming on to campus. A contract investigator is a non-campus employee who is contracted by an agency to check the backgrounds of present and former students. The agency could be a subcontractor of the government, from a state or local agency or from the military. These individuals ARE REQUIRED to stop at the Department of Safety office FIRST before going on to campus to visit other departments. When they stop at the Department of Safety first, we check their credentials, we require to see a release form signed by the student that they are conducting the check on, and we have them complete a “sign-in” form. If all these items are provided, we provide them with a Department of Safety investigator ID card, a temporary parking permit, and they will have a copy of the sign-in form that is signed by our department. If an investigator shows up in your office, you should be asking to see the sign-in form that is filled out by our office and the Department of Safety investigator ID card as well.

If you do not see both of these, you should not be providing any information to them. Kindly advise them that there is a protocol in place for investigators to be on campus and that they must first go to the Department of Safety office (located in Greenbriar, gray building on the left as they exit the main entrance to campus) to get permission and an ID before you will provide any information to them. If they refuse to come to our office, or if they continue to request the information, please call the Dispatch Office at ext. 6005 (on campus phone) or by cell at 717-691-6005. Let the dispatcher know what is going on and an officer will be sent to your location to speak with the investigators.

Please understand that some of these contract investigators are from a law enforcement agency and may have a holstered firearm on them. This can cause alarm to others on campus if seen. This is why we require them to stop at our office first so we know who is on campus and know that they have been cleared to be here. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Department of Safety and ask to speak to a supervisor; ext. 6005 or 717-691-6005.

A Community Conversation – “Opioids Not Needed: Identifying Alternatives. Improving Quality of Life”

Join Geisinger Holy Spirit and the Messiah College School of Graduate Studies for an informative community conversation, “Opioids Not Needed: Identifying Alternatives-Improving Quality of Life,” on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at Messiah College’s High Center. Emceed by ABC27’s Amanda Peterson, a panel of medical experts including: Dr.Theresa Burick, Dr. Michael Suk, Dr. Amy Humphrey, and Shan Padda of Harvard Medtech will discuss alternatives to opioid use for pain management.

Star Power! Fusion Energy Scientific Frontiers

Dr. Ian Hutchinson, professor of nuclear science and engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will give a talk on Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium (Frey 110). Nuclear Fusion is the energy source of the sun and stars – this presentation will explain for the lay audience what fusion is and how we are going about it. It will introduce the key scientific and engineering challenges we have been tackling, why fusion is so difficult, and what we still have to learn.

Deadline TODAY for fall reservations

If you are planning a fall 2019 event that involves more than a room reservation with food, the deadline to request an EMS room reservation is TODAY. “Can a Scientist believe in Miracles?” lecture

Christianity can’t be true if science disproves the possibility of a miracle such as the Resurrection. But does science really do this? For an adequate answer, we need to understand what science is and what a miracle is. Dr. Ian Hutchinson, professor of nuclear science and engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will provide a thoughtful examination of these two topics in his free lecture sponsored by The Central Pennsylvania Forum for Religion and Science, the Messiah College Honors Program, and College Ministries. Dr. Hutchinson has spoken many times at Veritas Forum events at universities across the country where he has responded to questions by both believers and skeptics. He will speak at Messiah College on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. This is a free event; no ticket required.

2019 CultureCONNECT Lecture

Black Italians and digital diaspora in contemporary Italy Please join the Department of Communication for the 2019 CultureCONNECT lecture, featuring filmmaker and activist Fred Kudjo Kuwornu. Clips from his films will be shown and discussed in Parmer Cinema on Monday, Nov. 4, at 6:30 pm. Kuwornu will address themes and issues that are most important to the current generation of Black Italians, who are among the global Black diaspora and live in a nation that refuses to grant them citizenship.

Fred Kudjo Kuwornu is an Italian-Ghanaian activist-ﬁlmmaker-lecturer, born and raised in Italy and based in Brooklyn. Kuwornu began working in ﬁlm with Spike Lee, as part of the crew of “Miracle at St. Anna” (2008). His own ﬁlms quickly followed,”Inside Buﬀalo” (2010), “18 Ius Soli” (2016), and “Blaxploitalian: 100 Years of Blackness in Italian Cinema” (2016). Kuwornu is the founder of Do The Right Films Entertainment, a production company based in New York that promotes the importance of racial and ethnic diversity in Italy and Europe using ﬁlm and other art forms as tools for building a more inclusive society (www.dotherightﬁlm.nyc).

Archives administration changes

Starting in the 2019-20 academic year, Messiah College has merged the three archives that exist on its campus: the Archives of Messiah College, the Brethren in Christ Historical Library and Archives, and the Ernest L. Boyer Center Archives. The merger creates opportunities for operational and administrative efficiencies while simultaneously allowing each unit to maintain its own unique identity and collecting policy under a common mission: to preserve and provide access to materials that document the history of Messiah College, its faculty, its alumni, and its founding denomination, the Brethren in Christ Church. Devin Manzullo-Thomas, who formerly oversaw the work of the Boyer Center Archives, will provide leadership to the merged archives as director of archives. Glen Pierce, who formerly directed the work of the College and Brethren in Christ archives, will continue in a revised role as archives assistant.

Spend an Evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist George Will

George Will speaks on “The Political Argument Today” on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Will is today’s most widely read columnist. His newspaper column has been syndicated by The Washington Post since 1974. Today, it appears twice weekly in approximately 500 newspapers in the U.S. and in Europe. In addition, he serves as a contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. In 1976, he became a regular contributing editor of Newsweek magazine, for which he provided a bimonthly essay until 2011. For 32 years, beginning as a founding member in 1981, he was a panelist on ABC television’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” In 1977, he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary for his newspaper columns. Altogether eight collections of Will’s Newsweek and Washington Post columns have been published, the most recent being “One Man’s America.” In 1990, Will published “Men At Work: The Craft of Baseball,” which topped The New York Times best-seller list for two months. Will was educated at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, Oxford University and Princeton University, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He has taught political philosophy at Michigan State University and the University of Toronto. Will served as a staff member in the U.S. Senate from 1970 to 1972. From 1973 through 1976, he was the Washington editor of National Review magazine. Today, Will lives and works in Washington, D.C.

President’s Open Door Day

Fall 2019 Shred Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, Shredding Solutions will provide a truck on campus for confidential document shredding. The truck will be located at the top of the access road between Frey Hall and the library (located where the access road and the brick walkway meet) and will be available from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed.

What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data and all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (a paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding.

Shredding instructions

Normal shredding needs: Please bring all the paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m., we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.).

Special shredding needs: If your department has specific needs, special arrangements can be made by calling Allen Snook, IT security analyst, at ext. 6790. All shredding arrangements must be made before the close of business Thursday, Oct. 17. For special requests or other questions, please contact Allen Snook, at ext. 6790.

Please join us at Messiah’s Homecoming Weekend as we celebrate the opening of two concurrent exhibitions of German expressionist prints on loan from the collection of Sandra and Robert Bowden at The Galleries at Messiah College. What is the “second tuition” for students?

The CCCU recently referred to the high cost of textbooks as students’ second tuition. This affects student retention and student success! During Open Access week (Oct. 21-27), the Library is offering 2 programs on open educational resources (OERs) and other free options in lieu of expensive textbooks. Both programs are designed to fit into a lunch hour (bring your bag lunch; cookies and coffee available!)

Wednesday, Oct. 23 (noon-12:50 p.m.), in the Learning Commons: Hear from faculty members who have adopted either open access textbooks or e-books available from the library, and also hear about a database of open access textbooks worth exploring.

Halloween Safety

Did you know children are hit and killed by a vehicle two times more often on Halloween than any other day of the year? If you’re a driver, use extra caution and drive slower during the hours of trick or treat. And if you’re a parent, here’s some tips to keep your chid(ren) safe during this fun time:

• Have each child carry or wear something lit, such as a flashlight (with fresh batteries), glow stick, or even light-up shoes for visibility. Consider adding reflective tape to costumes.

• Avoid costumes and accessories that create tripping hazards. Costumes that drag on the ground, ill-fitting shoes or high-heels, and masks that don’t allow full visibility create walking hazards.

• Don’t allow your children to cut across yards; obstacles could exist that aren’t readily visible in the evening. Stress that they should walk, not run; stay on sidewalks and in cross-walks as much as possible; and look both ways before crossing streets.

• Only trick or treat at houses with outside lights on. Residents who do not wish to be bothered by trick or treaters often have their lights turned off as a sign; respect their preference.

• Young children should be escorted by an adult. If your child is older and going without adult supervision, establish a pre-planned route and curfew time. Make sure s/he has a cell phone to contact you in the event of an emergency.

• Have your child wait until you can inspect the treats. Discard anything slightly or not completely wrapped. If your child has food allergies, read the ingredients carefully.

Halloween should be a fun-filled holiday for children. Please do your part to keep it that way.

Chicago Semester program rep visit

On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21 and 22, Sara (Van Gorp) Chiang, a representative from Chicago Semester will be on campus to talk to students about studying in Chicago, IL.

This program offers a variety of tracks. The 16-week semester program delivers a custom-tailored Chicago experience designed to prepare students for their chosen career – and life after college. The Chicago Semester staff work closely and collaboratively with the student to place them in a full-time internship that matches their interests.

Spend an Evening with Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist George Will

George Will speaks on “The Political Argument Today” on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall. Will is today’s most widely read columnist. His newspaper column has been syndicated by The Washington Post since 1974. Today, it appears twice weekly in approximately 500 newspapers in the U.S. and in Europe. In addition, he serves as a contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. In 1976, he became a regular contributing editor of Newsweek magazine, for which he provided a bimonthly essay until 2011. For 32 years, beginning as a founding member in 1981, he was a panelist on ABC television’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”
In 1977, he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary for his newspaper columns. Altogether eight collections of Will’s Newsweek and Washington Post columns have been published, the most recent being “One Man’s America.” In 1990, Will published “Men At Work: The Craft of Baseball,” which topped The New York Times best-seller list for two months. Will was educated at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, Oxford University and Princeton University, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He has taught political philosophy at Michigan State University and the University of Toronto. Will served as a staff member in the U.S. Senate from 1970 to 1972. From 1973 through 1976, he was the Washington editor of National Review magazine. Today, Will lives and works in Washington, D.C.

Erin presented on “Child Development and Care: Sociodramatic Play and Early Childhood Development” and Raeann presented “Interactive Activities to Engage Students in Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecology Theory.”

Congratulations to Denise Albert, College Press and Postal Services bulk mailroom lead technician, who successfully achieved her USPS Mailpiece Design Professional certification. Denise is now certified to review designed publications intended for mailing and render judgments in regards to USPS standards. The course Denise completed included topics such as postal addressing standards, classes of mail and processing categories, barcode formats, reply mail and designing for automation.

“In Matter and in Mode” faculty exhibition, artists’ talk and reception

This exhibition features selected work by full and part-time members of the Messiah College Art and Design faculty. The exhibition encompasses a variety of approaches to the concepts, materials and methods of art-making, design and exhibition curation. It provides a setting for dialogue between students and their mentors, and an opportunity for the greater community to engage with the creative endeavor of this talented faculty. Exhibition runs Sept. 13-Oct. 9.

Messiah preferred rental vehicle supplier – Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is Messiah’s preferred rental vehicle supplier. Enterprise offers competitive rates regionally and nationally, and will drop off and pick up vehicles on campus. A mid-size/intermediate car accommodates most travelers’ needs and costs just $35.50 per day. A 12 or 15-passenger van costs $97 per day. All required insurance is included in these rates. Picking up Enterprise vehicles on campus

Enterprise will drop off vehicles in the visitor parking lot, VV on the attached map.

If you are an Emerald Club member and made arrangements for the car to be dropped off on campus, keys can be picked up from Dispatch. You will be required to present ID and sign a log sheet verifying that you picked up the keys.
If you are not an Emerald Club member, be sure you understand the pick-up/return arrangements – you must be present to sign for the vehicle.

Returning Enterprise vehicles on campus (Emerald Club and non-Emerald Club members)

Park the vehicle in the visitor parking lot, VV on the attached map and lock the doors.
Immediately take the keys to the dispatch window and identify that you are returning an Enterprise rental vehicle. You will be required to present ID and sign a log sheet verifying that you returned the keys.
Email Rachel.A.Plotycia@ehi.com to confirm that the vehicle has been returned. This is an important step and helps eliminate extra charges.

Congratulations to Mandy Lohss, assistant professor of mathematics, and her husband, Shane, on the Sept. 20 arrival of their daughter, McKenzie Jade. McKenzie weighed 7 lbs., 12 oz. All are doing well and the family is enjoying their new blessing.

Susanna Caroselli, professor emerita of art history, was invited to contribute a chapter to the book, “Jews in Medieval England: Teaching Representations of the Other,” edited by Miriamne Ara Krummel and Tison Pugh (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017). The book has just been awarded the 2019 Teaching Literature Book Award, an international prize presented biennially by Idaho State University. The committee cited the “range of creative approaches” that have “much to offer teachers of multicultural literature and religious studies who want to explore the historical roots of prejudice with their students.”

Friends of Murray Library 2019 annual dinner and meeting

Join us Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in Martin Commons for the Friends of Murray Library annual dinner and meeting. Kathy T. Hettinga will return to Messiah College to share her work and discuss the process of artist’s books. In her presentation, “Creating Artist’s Books from Object to Identity,” Hettinga will discuss the concepts behind her work and the projects she designed for her students.Drawing from her comprehensive background in drawing/illustration, book arts/typography, photography/scanning, collage and printmaking, Professor Hettinga led and pushed students to excellence in art and design, resulting in their work being published over a dozen times in international design journals. The Kathy T. Hettinga Student Artists’ Book Archive at Murray Library was created from the extensive student book art created under her direction. These works reveal the remarkable depths of meaning and beauty created by her students in response to Hettinga’s guidance and direction.

Intro to Introprofessional Education Panel presentation

The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to offer our annual panel presentation that introduces the topic of Interprofessional Education (IPE) to all students, faculty and staff. All are welcome to attend but this is of special interest for those involved with applied health sciences, athletic training, dietetic internship and nutrition, occupational therapy and pre-OT, physical therapy and pre-PT, and nursing.

Join us on Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 5-7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel as we welcome panelists from various health professions to hear how they implement IPE in real-world applications. Our guests will discuss their educational backgrounds, professions, and how an interprofessional approach in their setting is beneficial to delivering quality patient care. The program will conclude with time allotted for Q & A from the audience. Light refreshments will be available. An electronic recording of this event will be produced.
