Nance McCown, professor of communication, co-presented as part of a joint teaching panel titled “Don’t Let Teaching Overwhelm You: Creating Inclusive Classrooms While Protecting Balance” to the Commission on the Status of Women and the Religion and Media Interest Group at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference, Detroit, MI, in August. Nance’s panel portion was titled, “Co-creating Inclusive Classrooms: Holding Space for Faith.”

Celebrating Messiah’s Distinctives: An Employee In-service Event

All administrators, faculty and staff are warmly encouraged to attend the employee in-service event on Sept. 20. Middle States’ Self-Study Report draft available

Accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. are required by their respective accrediting agencies to complete periodic self-studies—a process that involves a significant amount of data collection, analysis and evaluation resulting in a comprehensive institutional report. Messiah University will present our Self-Study Report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States) in the spring of 2023. Over the past year and a half, a campus steering team and multiple working groups have analyzed and prepared Messiah University’s Self-Study Report, a process that included soliciting and receiving feedback on draft chapters that were posted earlier this year.

The draft of the 2023 Self-Study Report will be submitted to the review team chair this week and is now available to the community at https://www.messiah.edu/middlestates. The co-chairs of the MSCHE Steering Committee, Laura Miller and Alison Noble, thank the members of the steering committee and working groups for their service in this important process, as well as the larger community for their input.

The draft of the Self-Study will be submitted to Middle States in early 2023 and the MSCHE review team will visit campus on March 12-15, 2023.

Friends 20th Annual dinner and program with Anita Voelker

Join us Friday Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. for the Friends of Murray Library Annual Dinner. We are delighted to welcome Anita Voelker back to campus as our keynote speaker. Anita taught for many years in the Education Department at Messiah University. In her presentation, “A Peek Through the Looking Glass: Why Children’s Books Matter,” Anita will discuss how most readers have one particular children’s book that sustained them in childhood and fortified them in adulthood. C.S. Lewis would agree. He noted that “no book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond.” Anita’s presentation will enable us to peek through the proverbial looking glass to discover the richness of children’s literature through both images and words. By revisiting this distinctive genre with fresh eyes, we will discover why children’s books matter. The event will be held in Hostetter Chapel, with a meal catered by Messiah’s Two Bridges Catering. Seeking student for communications assistant

Do you know a student who is a pithy writer or is considering a future in marketing, communications or public relations? Undergraduate Admissions is seeking a student who will contribute to communication efforts with prospective students. This student will partner with the admissions communications manager and will be involved in activities such as drafting content for e-mails and serving as a primary student contact on social media platforms like ZeeMee and class-specific Instagram accounts. In search of Mr. Green…

One of the most exciting events the library hosts each year is Live Clue, which brings students into the library to solve a mystery while learning what the library has to offer. Part of this event includes REAL live suspects including Miss Scarlett, Ms. White, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard and Mr. Green. At this time, our Mr. Green has retired, leaving us with an opening for someone new to take his place. We would love to see a Messiah employee fill this role, which consists of wandering through the library stacks and interacting with the students who are playing. You would be given all the information you need to answer the questions they might have for you and it’s really about just having fun! This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 from around 6 – 9 p.m. If you are interesting in joining our team, email Kimberly Steiner at ksteiner@messiah.edu.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as bassoonist and solo alto saxophonist at Duke Divinity School (Duke University) on Sept. 2 with The New Caritas Orchestra under the baton of theologian/musician Jeremy Begbie. The orchestra was comprised of 54 Christian orchestral musicians from top US orchestras and music school faculties, including the Boston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. The concert, titled “Cries of Loss and Hope: Marking a Difficult Season in Music and Word” was presented by Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts and will be aired on PBS stations in the Carolinas in 2023.

The Division of Student Success and Engagement would like to share the following changes within the Division:

Doug Wood has been promoted from Associate Dean of Students to the Dean of Students replacing Kevin Villegas. He will continue to provide oversight to residence life, housing, Engle Center for Health and Counseling and student conduct. The Associate Dean of Students position has been eliminated.

Christy Hanson has been named Dean of Experiential Learning and Leadership Development and will provide oversight to the Office of Student Engagement as well as the Career and Professional Development Center and the Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement.

Emily Bingham has been named director of campus ministries; she will also continue her role as teaching ministries pastor.

Sarah Axtman has taken the role as the full time coordinator for Student Success and Engagement/executive administrative assistant to the vice provost. Sarah comes to us from Linglestown Life, where she served for 12 years as its full-time director of discipleship for children and youth.

We welcome Carrie Beth Ent into the role of director of health services for the Engle Health Center. Carrie Beth is a certified registered nurse practitioner and was formerly the director of student health at Goucher College.

We also welcome Kimberly Keene as the new full time administrative assistant to the Engle Center for Health and Counseling. She will provide support to both Health and Counseling services.

The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 15 new graduate assistants for the 2022-2023 academic year both on the Messiah University campus and at partner institutions. Graduate assistantships offer graduate students the opportunity to apply educational theories gained through classroom instruction and put them into professional practice through supervised, real-world experience. The graduate assistantship program aims to provide an innovative and cost-efficient way to advance departmental and university-wide goals and objectives.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, completed the Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine certification through the Performing Arts Medicine Association on July 31. Founded in 1988, PAMA’s mission is to work with and for the health of performing artists through education, research, and a commitment to a deep understanding of the special needs associated with the performing arts.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recently received renewal of their American Chemical Society Approval until 2028, allowing for ACS certification of our majors. The ACS Committee on Professional Training noted, in particular, the department’s thoughtful approach to skill development and use of instrumentation throughout the curriculum, as well as the strong undergraduate research program.

Leah Clarke has been appointed the program director of the graduate program in counseling. As you know, Leah has been a longstanding faculty member in the program, and she has served well as the assistant director for the last several years. Leah’s administrative skills along with her understanding of and commitment to the program will be strong assets as she assumes the role of program director.

We are thankful to Heather Barto for her long-term leadership as program director and her continuing work as a faculty member in the program. Heather has also been with the program since its early years, and she has been a significant contributor to the program’s success.

Starting this fall, Maya Georgieva will take on the duties of the clinical mental health track coordinator, joining Kristi Mouttet (marriage, couple, and family) and Sarah Brant-Rajahn (school counseling) to provide good leadership to our three CACREP-accredited Master’s programs.

After serving faithfully and effectively as CMHC track coordinator for eight years, Carol McGinnis will be taking the role of admissions and retention chair for the program. Her enthusiasm for the counseling profession and constant care for students will serve her well in this role.

We also welcome Linda Gemberling as the field placement assistant coordinator to assist with school counseling placements. Linda has worked with many of our practicum students over the past several years and we are excited to have her join us in this new capacity.

All of the faculty and staff look forward to continuing to serve our students well as we adjust to the changes and advancements in the counseling profession.

She joins us from Big Springs school district. Beth has a son who is starting his junior year with us. Laying a Prayerful Foundation – Monday, Aug. 15

Please consider participating in this prayer vigil as we pray for new and returning students, new and returning employees, our Board of Trustees, and our overall campus physical and spiritual well-being.

All are invited to sign up for a 15-minute prayer time between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15. You may intercede in prayer at any location during your 15-minute slot. Community Day

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as President Phipps’ presentation of the State of the University address. Refreshments and 2022 Community Day t-shirts will be available from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in front of the High Center. All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch) will close from 8:45-11:30 a.m. to allow employees to enjoy the Community Day experience.

Welcome Week 2022

The Office of Student Engagement is excited to host Welcome Week 2022 for all incoming new & transfer students. New Student Orientation will begin for all students on Friday, Aug. 19 (some students will arrive earlier through particular early arrival programs). Please be aware that there will be many visitors on campus the 19 as our new students arrive to Messiah. Orientation events will continue through Saturday, Aug. 27.

Free desks. Messiah University has leftover furniture from residence hall moves and room consolidations. After responsibly donating furniture and disposing of what was not able to be reclaimed, we are left with 15 desks that have no home.

Relax behind Murray Library

All staff are invited to visit the Fiddlehead Forest located behind Murray Library. This serene garden spot features a bronze “Fiddlehead” sculpture created by students in the Department of Art and Design.  This beautifully landscaped contemplative garden is a hidden gem on campus and features blooms throughout the season. There is a picnic table and other seating nestled among the trees. Thank you to the grounds services department, who is responsible for the care of this green space.
