Deadline for Submitting Fall 2022 EMS Events

Friday, Oct. 28 is the deadline to submit your Fall 2021 EMS event requests that include tech/audio needs, set up needs or events that require tickets. End-of-the-year requests with service needs received after Oct 28th will be denied.

Requests that do not require these needs will still be accepted as will any event for 2023. Email roomres@messiah.edu with any questions.

Passport Services

Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25 to process passport applications. PLEASE NOTE: the current time for processing passports is 7-10 weeks.

Applicants need to bring the following documents:

Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE.
Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page
Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID
Completed application
Fees ($130 check or money order written to the U.S. Department of State and $35 cash or check written to the Prothonotary’s Office)
Photo services will be available. Cost is $10 in cash or check written to Messiah University.

When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.

Messiah is transitioning to Tap ID cards

All employees must have a tap ID card for building access and on-campus purchasing.

If you received an employee ID card after February 2017, your card is already tap-enabled. You do not need to upgrade your ID Card.

If you received your ID card BEFORE February 2017, you will need to upgrade your ID card. Since Messiah is requiring this upgrade, you will not be charged for a new ID card. Messiah is transitioning card readers to be tap-only beginning fall break. The ability to swipe for door access and purchases will be deactivated all over campus.

How to Upgrade Your ID card:
1. Email falconexchange@messiah.edu from your Messiah email account with the subject line “Upgrade to Tap ID Card.”
2. Include your name, ID #, and your photo. Note: Only appropriate photos will be accepted. Select a close-up, high quality, digital photo of yourself where you are looking directly at the camera. Do not wear a hat.
3. Send the email by Friday, Oct. 14.
4. The Falcon Exchange will email you when your new tap-enabled ID card is ready.

Messiah issued computers – Cortex XDR Endpoint Security roll out

On Monday Oct. 3, ITS will begin rolling out Cortex XDR to all Messiah-issued Windows PCs and Macs. Cortex XDR is an extended detection and response application that will provide added security on our machines by blocking malware, ransomware, exploits, and fileless attacks.
The installation will complete silently and, in our testing, we have not come across any issues with Cortex XDR preventing known software from running properly.
However, if you do experience any issues with Cortex XDR interfering with or removing software that you use, please let us know by e-mailing techsupport@messiah.edu or calling 717-796-4444.

New Seed Library at Murray Library. We need YOU!

What’s a seed library?

A seed library is a circulating collection of seeds that people can borrow, plant, harvest, save, and—if all goes according to plan—return to the library for others to borrow. A Seed Library offers opportunities for anyone to try their hand in gardening. In spring 2023, the Murray Library seed library will freely share seeds with any interested gardeners. This will be open to the community. Look for more details in 2023!

How can you help? Please donate your seeds!

-As you harvest your fall plants, save some of the seeds for yourself and bring some to the library.

-Return the seeds in separate baggies or envelopes by their variety to the Library’s circulation desk. Seeds must be dry and free of most residue.

-The seed library accepts seeds for: vegetables, herbs, flowers

-Commercially distributed, opened or unopened seed packets are also accepted.

St. Benedict and St. Christopher Keychain charms. These charms have been blessed by our local priest Fr. Eseke who is also a professor here at Messiah University.
St. Christopher symbolizes safe travels and St. Benedict medals are used in many ways, but always as a protection against evil. Some people bury them in the foundations of new buildings to keep them free from evil influences, while others attach them to rosaries or hang them on the wall in their homes.

Congratulations to three of our nursing faculty. Nancy Frank, PhD, RN, CNE, CMSRN, and Jeff Stroup, DNP, RN, CEN successfully completed doctoral degrees. Nancy received her PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Jeff earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Messiah University. Kristin Shaub, MSN, RN, CNE, CCRN received a 2022 National League for Nursing Foundation nursing education faculty scholarship award. Kristin is currently a graduate student in Messiah University’s DNP/FNP program and an adjunct faculty member in the nursing department.

Chanty Webb, Engle Center nurse, has published her second book, Parenting Through the Four Seasons. Chanty is a mother of four with a passion for writing about the challenges that God brings into her life. Her pursuit of writing began 10 years ago when a former NPR journalist joined her church and started an author’s ministry. That encounter provided the catalyst for Chanty to publish her first book, Personal Finances Personal Freedom, and has kept her writing ever since.

All educators at Messiah University are invited to nominate candidates for the
Class of 1964 Wittlinger Prize and the Boyer Legacy Award.

These two awards are presented annually by the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies and the Ernest L. Boyer Center, respectively, to recognize student leaders who embody particular ideals. The Wittlinger Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger’s (Class of 1935) qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication. Similarly, the Boyer Legacy Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Ernest L. Boyer’s (Class of 1948) ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.

Eligible candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity, and a commitment to service. There is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.

Nominations should include the student’s name and a brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining why the student merits the honor. Students may be nominated for either or both awards.

Both awards carry a cash prize of $1,000 each.

The Wittlinger Award recipient will be recognized during the January 2023 Wittlinger Chapel Series; the Boyer Award recipient will be recognized at the fall 2023 Teacher Education/Boyer Center Awards Ceremony.

Tovah Wilson is joining the Office of Development. I am pleased to share that Tovah has agreed to serve as the next director of annual giving and donor communication. Tovah is a double grad of Messiah having both a Bachelor’s in Education and a Master’s in Higher Education. Most recently, she was part of the HR team at Messiah. Prior to that, she served in Residence Life at both Messiah and Bluffton University. She has also taught elementary school in Honduras. Tovah has a clear commitment and skillset around building and fostering relationships. I am delighted she will be bringing these talents to the task of engaging a broad constituency of alumni, parents, friends, and other donors into the important educational mission of Messiah University. Tovah’s first day in the Development Office will be September 26th.

Paper supply shortage

If you are working or plan to work with the Office of Marketing and Communications and/or Messiah Press, please be aware there is currently a global paper shortage. The paper shortage and increase paper prices are projected to persist through 2023. It’s been a challenge to acquire paper and Press spends several hours a week on the phone with vendors.

What does this mean for you?

To combat the shortage and potential delay in paper, the OMC/Messiah Press are asking, when initiating your projects to plan for an extra week, to battle paper delivery.

For all jobs that are created in OMC and then printed at Messiah Press the new time lines are as follows:

Print only: 6 weeks

Print and mail distribution: 7 weeks

Print and mail distribution with variable data: 8 weeks

Friends 20^th Annual dinner and program with Anita Voelker

Join us Friday Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. for the Friends of Murray Library Annual Dinner. We are delighted to welcome Anita Voelker back to campus as our keynote speaker. Anita taught for many years in the Education Department at Messiah University. In her presentation, “A Peek Through the Looking Glass: Why Children’s Books Matter,” Anita will discuss how most readers have one particular children’s book that sustained them in childhood and fortified them in adulthood. C.S. Lewis would agree. He noted that “no book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally – and often far more – worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond.” Anita’s presentation will enable us to peek through the proverbial looking glass to discover the richness of children’s literature through both images and words. By revisiting this distinctive genre with fresh eyes, we will discover why children’s books matter. The event will be held in Hostetter Chapel, with a meal catered by Messiah’s Two Bridges Catering. Seeking student for communications assistant

Do you know a student who is a pithy writer or is considering a future in marketing, communications or public relations? Undergraduate Admissions is seeking a student who will contribute to communication efforts with prospective students. This student will partner with the admissions communications manager and will be involved in activities such as drafting content for e-mails and serving as a primary student contact on social media platforms like ZeeMee and class-specific Instagram accounts. In search of Mr. Green…

One of the most exciting events the library hosts each year is Live Clue, which brings students into the library to solve a mystery while learning what the library has to offer. Part of this event includes REAL live suspects including Miss Scarlett, Ms. White, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard and Mr. Green. At this time, our Mr. Green has retired, leaving us with an opening for someone new to take his place. We would love to see a Messiah employee fill this role, which consists of wandering through the library stacks and interacting with the students who are playing. You would be given all the information you need to answer the questions they might have for you and it’s really about just having fun! Linda was also elected to be association’s president for 2022-2023. The Association of Christian Librarians (ACL) is an organization of evangelical Christian academic librarians that seeks to strengthen libraries through professional development of evangelical librarians and spiritual encouragement for service in higher education.

Nance McCown, professor of communication, co-presented as part of a joint teaching panel titled “Don’t Let Teaching Overwhelm You: Creating Inclusive Classrooms While Protecting Balance” to the Commission on the Status of Women and the Religion and Media Interest Group at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference, Detroit, MI, in August. Nance’s panel portion was titled, “Co-creating Inclusive Classrooms: Holding Space for Faith.”

Celebrating Messiah’s Distinctives: An Employee In-service Event

Trivia Night at Murray Library

Middle States’ Self-Study Report draft available

Accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. are required by their respective accrediting agencies to complete periodic self-studies—a process that involves a significant amount of data collection, analysis and evaluation resulting in a comprehensive institutional report. Messiah University will present our Self-Study Report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States) in the spring of 2023. Over the past year and a half, a campus steering team and multiple working groups have analyzed and prepared Messiah University’s Self-Study Report, a process that included soliciting and receiving feedback on draft chapters that were posted earlier this year.

The draft of the 2023 Self-Study Report will be submitted to the review team chair this week and is now available to the community at https://www.messiah.edu/middlestates. The co-chairs of the MSCHE Steering Committee, Laura Miller and Alison Noble, thank the members of the steering committee and working groups for their service in this important process, as well as the larger community for their input.

The draft of the Self-Study will be submitted to Middle States in early 2023 and the MSCHE review team will visit campus on March 12-15, 2023.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as bassoonist and solo alto saxophonist at Duke Divinity School (Duke University) on Sept. 2 with The New Caritas Orchestra under the baton of theologian/musician Jeremy Begbie. The orchestra was comprised of 54 Christian orchestral musicians from top US orchestras and music school faculties, including the Boston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. The concert, titled “Cries of Loss and Hope: Marking a Difficult Season in Music and Word” was presented by Duke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts and will be aired on PBS stations in the Carolinas in 2023.

The Division of Student Success and Engagement would like to share the following changes within the Division:

Doug Wood has been promoted from Associate Dean of Students to the Dean of Students replacing Kevin Villegas. He will continue to provide oversight to residence life, housing, Engle Center for Health and Counseling and student conduct. The Associate Dean of Students position has been eliminated.

Christy Hanson has been named Dean of Experiential Learning and Leadership Development and will provide oversight to the Office of Student Engagement as well as the Career and Professional Development Center and the Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement.

Emily Bingham has been named director of campus ministries; she will also continue her role as teaching ministries pastor.

Sarah Axtman has taken the role as the full time coordinator for Student Success and Engagement/executive administrative assistant to the vice provost. Sarah comes to us from Linglestown Life, where she served for 12 years as its full-time director of discipleship for children and youth.

We welcome Carrie Beth Ent into the role of director of health services for the Engle Health Center. Carrie Beth is a certified registered nurse practitioner and was formerly the director of student health at Goucher College.

We also welcome Kimberly Keene as the new full time administrative assistant to the Engle Center for Health and Counseling. She will provide support to both Health and Counseling services.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, completed the Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine certification through the Performing Arts Medicine Association on July 31. Founded in 1988, PAMA’s mission is to work with and for the health of performing artists through education, research, and a commitment to a deep understanding of the special needs associated with the performing arts.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recently received renewal of their American Chemical Society Approval until 2028, allowing for ACS certification of our majors. The ACS Committee on Professional Training noted, in particular, the department’s thoughtful approach to skill development and use of instrumentation throughout the curriculum, as well as the strong undergraduate research program.

Leah Clarke has been appointed the program director of the graduate program in counseling. As you know, Leah has been a longstanding faculty member in the program, and she has served well as the assistant director for the last several years. Leah’s administrative skills along with her understanding of and commitment to the program will be strong assets as she assumes the role of program director.

We are thankful to Heather Barto for her long-term leadership as program director and her continuing work as a faculty member in the program. Heather has also been with the program since its early years, and she has been a significant contributor to the program’s success.

Starting this fall, Maya Georgieva will take on the duties of the clinical mental health track coordinator, joining Kristi Mouttet (marriage, couple, and family) and Sarah Brant-Rajahn (school counseling) to provide good leadership to our three CACREP-accredited Master’s programs.

After serving faithfully and effectively as CMHC track coordinator for eight years, Carol McGinnis will be taking the role of admissions and retention chair for the program. Her enthusiasm for the counseling profession and constant care for students will serve her well in this role.

We also welcome Linda Gemberling as the field placement assistant coordinator to assist with school counseling placements. Linda has worked with many of our practicum students over the past several years and we are excited to have her join us in this new capacity.

All of the faculty and staff look forward to continuing to serve our students well as we adjust to the changes and advancements in the counseling profession.

Community Day

All employees are encouraged to attend Community Day on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. This annual Messiah tradition serves as the ceremonial launch of the new academic year for employees with opportunities for corporate worship and fellowship, as well as President Phipps’ presentation of the State of the University address. Refreshments and 2022 Community Day t-shirts will be available from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in front of the High Center. All offices and departments (with the exception of Dispatch) will close from 8:45-11:30 a.m. to allow employees to enjoy the Community Day experience.

Laying a Prayerful Foundation – Monday, Aug. 15

Welcome Week 2022

The Office of Student Engagement is excited to host Welcome Week 2022 for all incoming new & transfer students. New Student Orientation will begin for all students on Friday, Aug. 19 (some students will arrive earlier through particular early arrival programs). Please be aware that there will be many visitors on campus the 19 as our new students arrive to Messiah. Orientation events will continue through Saturday, Aug. 27.
