Messiah Human Library Project – Where Humans Become Open Books

With featured guest speaker, TM Garret

Save the date: Wednesday, March 30, 2022

The Human Library Project is where Messiah students, faculty and staff become open books, sharing their personal stories with readers. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers.

Please save the date of March 30 in the afternoon, as well as the evening at 7 p.m. to hear our featured book, Mr. T.M. Garret.

Before he started engaging in civil rights work, TM Garret was a White Supremacist in leading roles in Europe and the USA. Leaving behind an ideology of hate, he now shares his compelling testimony of the journey into and out of the hate movement and the hope for building a more beloved community.

The title of his “human library talk” is “Erasing the Hate: From Neo-Nazi to Peace Activist.”

Questions may be directed to Dr. Todd Allen, vice president for diversity affairs, at tallen@messiah.edu or to Liz Kielley, discovery and metadata librarian, at ekielley@messiah.edu.

Susquehanna Chorale Candlelight Christmas Concert

Susquehanna Chorale Candlelight Christmas Concert
Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, 8 p.m.
Calvin and Janet High Center, Parmer Hall

The nationally acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale, conducted by Messiah’s Professor Emeritus, Linda Tedford, will present its annual Candlelight Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 17, as they commemorate their 40th Anniversary concert season.

The sacred mystery of the season is honored with Gustav Holst’s Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Egil Hovland’s The Glory of the Father, and Matthew Culloton’s In Dulci Jubilo. We proudly feature Dan Forrest’s new work commissioned for the Chorale’s 40th Anniversary, Let the Stable Still Astonish, along with his See Amid the Winter’s Snow, The First Noel, and Good Christian Men Rejoice. Holiday cheer abounds with Mack Wilberg’s Christmas is Coming and Gordon Langford’s Jingle Bells.

This year’s Candlelight Christmas brings back the traditions of glorious music and audience sing-alongs of familiar carols which were absent from our lives last year. You will hear favorites from past concerts – The Work of Christmas, This Christmastide, and the spirituals Rise Up Shepherd and Follow and Go Where I Send Thee – all of which have been included on our new 40th Anniversary double CD, Legacy. The evening concludes with the Chorale’s traditional finale, Silent Night, sung in the round by candlelight. A pre-concert prelude by Dan Dorty, organ, will be presented 15 minutes before the performance.

The performance will additionally be available via livestream. For details, visit us on-line at www.susquehannachorale.org.

The Chorale wishes to thank our Season Sponsors, The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation, and The United Service Foundation, as well as our Candlelight Christmas Concert Series Sponsor, The Anne M. and Philip H. Glatfelter, III Family Foundation.

“The Susquehanna Chorale’s Candlelight Christmas concerts are eagerly anticipated by audience members,” Conductor Tedford said. Join us and make the Candlelight Christmas concert, a treasured celebration in Central Pennsylvania, a part of your holiday traditions!”

For ticket options call the Messiah University Box Office at 717-691-6036 or visit www.susquehannachorale.org.

“Portraits of White” presented by Frances Drost

The region’s premier holiday concert experience is once again live, as singer-songwriter Frances Drost presents the eighth annual performance of her popular signature performance at Messiah University. Drost, accompanied by professional instrumentalists and vocalists in an eight-piece ensemble, will offer two shows at Parmer Hall on the Grantham, Pa., campus, Friday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m.

The much-anticipated annual concert grew out of Drost’s Portraits of White CD of original compositions expressing the range of emotions associated with her experience of Christmas—from her love of snow to her struggles with loss. “It is a personal Christmas/winter journey,” Drost says, “from the time I was a little girl right up through my recent years of songwriting. Just like the CD, it is predominantly my music, along with some well-loved and recognizable Christmas selections.”

Tickets are available at 717-691-6036, or at PortraitsofWhite.com.

NEWS

Dr. Tina Keller’s article, “Story Shaping Ideology: Majoritarian Stories of English Learners” was recently published as a chapter in the book “Teaching Practices and Language Ideologies for Multilingual Classrooms” (Chapter 1).

Using interviews, artifacts, email correspondences and lesson plans collected from six white, female, preservice teachers during their student teaching, this chapter focuses on the stories that shaped their ideologies of the emergent bilingual children in their classrooms. The findings indicate the preservice teachers, while having diverse lived experiences, held some common majoritarian stories concerning English learners. In addition to those majoritarian stories already established in the field, there were three additional stories uncovered in this study that significantly influenced the ideologies of emergent bilingual students. The chapter concludes by encouraging teacher educators to unpack story and use it as a vehicle for addressing teacher ideology of emergent bilingual students.

We have three significant staffing changes in the Office of Development, effective Jan. 1, 2022.

Bob Brown will be transitioning to part-time. I am very thankful that rather than embarking on full retirement, Bob has agreed to remain at Messiah, but reduce his hours to part-time status. Bob is an alumnus of Messiah, Class of 1982, and represents the very best of what the Messiah educational experience offers to our students. Bob is a skilled planned giving officer having helped guide literally millions of dollars from generous donors who are alumni, parents and friends to sustain the University’s long-term financial health. I look forward to continue working with Bob!

Abby Book is joining Development. I am delighted to share that Abby Book ’98 is moving from her position in the Career and Professional Development Center to become the director of advancement affinity programs within Development. Over the past several years, Abby has worked closely with the Development team on multiple collaborations – most notably the Into the City career immersion trips. She will retain her involvement with Into the City, but also expand her duties to provide leadership to – among others – our Heritage Society, Women of Influence, Retired Educators, BuxMont Council, and Golden Grad programs. We are excited to bring Abby’s many talents to our team!

Introducing John Zeigler. John Zeigler will be joining us as director of development and capital campaigns. John currently serves as a senior gift officer for his alma mater, Bucknell University. However, John is also a current parent of a Messiah student. John has extensive background in both the law profession and fundraising. We are thrilled that he is joining us as we not only complete the current $75M Campaign for Messiah University, but also plan for future needs of the institution.

Please join me in wishing Bob well as he continues in his new role and in welcoming Abby and John to the Messiah Development team!

Jon C. Stuckey, Ph.D.
Associate VP for Development

Christmas with Tim Zimmerman and the King’s Brass, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m., Parmer Hall

Tim Zimmerman and the King’s Brass provide innovative worship for young and old alike through the “best in sacred brass music.” By teaming together, these Christian professionals from around the United States perform their original arrangements as heard on their eighteen recordings. The King’s Brass, formed four decades ago in Detroit, is comprised of professional musicians from across the country featuring three trumpets, three trombones, a tuba, keyboards, and percussion. Based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the group plays over 150 concerts per year from coast to coast as well as internationally. Playing a wide variety of music from Gabrieli to hymn classics, from Handel to jazz spirituals, from Christmas carols to patriotic marches, The King’s Brass uses all corners of the concert hall to lift hearts and spirits in praise. Secular and sacred music critics alike applaud their concerts as “superb in every way” and “innovative and well played.” “Truly, an unforgettable experience!”

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Near-fatal complications ensue, but with the help of the hilarious Constable Dogberry and his bumbling police force, the lovers are ultimately united.

Mendelssohn Piano Trio presents “Unity in Variety: Musical Path to Reconciliation”, High Foundation Recital Hall, Oct. 31, 4 p.m.

Felix Mendelssohn considered unity in variety the essence of the beautiful. Through masterpieces by Brahms and Ravel, Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores this idea and its broader implications for reconciliation in our increasingly fractured society. Mendelssohn Piano Trio explores both meanings of the word “reconciliation:” restoration of peaceful and friendly relationships, as well as making things compatible with each other.

The program includes Brahms Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major and Ravel Piano Trio. Brahms wrote his Sonata Op. 100 as a reconciliation gift to his friend, violinist Joseph Joachim and his wife, after their contentious separation which even involved a legal battle in which Brahms testified on wife’s behalf. The Ravel Piano Trio, written on the eve of World War I, is a perfect example of great artist’s ability to reconcile seemingly incompatible cultural influences such as French baroque forms, jazz harmonies and Javanese dance rhythms.

Ticket prices are $20 for adults; $5 for Messiah University students (with ID) and youth (18 and under). To purchase, please contact the Messiah University Ticket Office at 717-691-6036 or online at messiah.edu/tickets.

“The Good Gardener: Learning the Virtues through Embodied Time,” lecture by Emily Maeda

Co-sponsored with the Office of Sustainability.
Wednesday, Nov. 3, 7 p.m., High Center Recital Hall.

In a time when wars, disasters and conflict dominate our daily news feed, what in the world would landscapes and gardens have to offer a broken world? Gardens invite us to attend to the moment, to temporalize space and to “come to our senses.” In a world of mediated experiences, gardens remain stubbornly rooted in time and help us to embody the meaning of hope.

Emily Maeda grew up outside of Boulder on her parent’s farm where she learned to love the beauty of Colorado’s natural environment. She pursued her education in piano performance at both the University of Colorado and Arizona State University, where she also took classes in landscape design. Currently, she serves as vice president of Tree of Life Landscapes, which emphasizes the use of native plants and the design principles of order, unity, and rhythm.

Galatians 6:9

NEWS

On July 1, 2020, Messiah College officially became Messiah University. In the months leading up to that name change, College Press renamed itself and rebranded. The department, which had been known across campus for nearly 50 years as “College Press,” became “Messiah Press” and with that name change came a slew of promotional activity, new signage, new forms, new web pages and a new on-line ordering system.

On Oct. 13, the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) recognized that campaign and Messiah Press with the In-House Promotional Excellence Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in promotional vehicles and/or campaigns developed by and used to promote an in-house corporate publishing facility. The Awards Committee expressed a deep appreciation for the planning and purpose of the campaign as well as the remarkable graphic design and the impressive results, all of which occurred while working through pandemic related challenges.

Founded in 1964, the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) is the only professional association dedicated exclusively to meet the needs of all segments’ in-house printers and mailers. The more than 700 members of IPMA are managers and directors from in-plant printing and mailing facilities throughout the United States. IPMA is headquartered in Kearney, MO. For more information, visit www.ipma.org

Fueled by Failure: Unlikely Paths to Success

Please join us in Murray Library on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 7-8 p.m. to hear from six panelists who will share about some of the failures in their lives and how God used those failures to bring them to new and better places. Panelists include Amy Nichols, director of international student programs; Lyndsay Grimm, director of residence life; Robin Lauermann, professor of politics; Donald Pratt, retired professor of engineering; Isabelle Meredith, adjunct instructor in language, literature and writing; and Jay McClymont, director of alumni and parent relations. Please encourage students to attend, as we highlight the importance of resilience, determination and faith in the midst of trial and disappointment.

Development staff transition

It is with regret that I announce that Mark Templeton will be leaving his alma mater as of Friday, Oct. 29.

Mark will become a development officer for the Brethren in Christ denomination. The good news is that Mark will only be across the train tracks in the Brethren in Christ denominational office – but the very sad news is that he will no longer be in Old Main.

Over the past nine years, Mark has served in various gift officer capacities within the Development Office. His winsome attitude and dedication to our Christ-centered mission have enabled him to forge strong relationships with donors of Messiah, particularly Heritage Society members, Retired Educators, and our Bux-Mont Council. The impact of his good work will continue long into the future. We are deeply grateful for Mark’s tenure at Messiah and wish him the very best!

Drop some off or take some home and return whenever you are done! Contact Joanna at jhadley@messiah.edu to arrange a time to stop by her office in Hostetter Chapel to peruse the collection.

Employee chapel

You are invited to an employee chapel on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 9:30 a.m. in Parmer Hall. Music will be provided by the Worship Community. Stephen Gallaher will offer the message. We welcome you to join your colleagues in this special time of worship together.

Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center Dedication Celebration

Please join us! All Messiah students and employees are invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony of the Kim S. Phipps Admissions and Welcome Center on Friday, Oct. 15. The ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Dr. Thomas and Linda Pheasant Entrance Plaza (the building entrance facing the campus green) followed by a dessert reception inside the building. The rain location for the ceremony will be inside the building. (Note: the University will be hosting a private outdoor luncheon prior to this ceremony to show appreciation for the trustees and friends whose generosity made this new facility and campus green space possible for our campus community.) Please direct any questions to Yonette Schneider at YSchneider@messiah.edu.

You’re invited!

Join us Monday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. for the Friends of Murray Library 19th Annual Dinner Meeting and Program. Devin Manzullo-Thomas will share findings from his forthcoming book, Exhibiting Evangelicalism: Commemoration and Religion’s Purpose of the Past, about the history of evangelical museums in America. In the United States, museums are respected cultural institutions and are viewed as places for education, tourism or the cultivation of civic virtue – supposedly secular purposes. But many museums challenge this simple characterization, including museums owned and operated by evangelical Christians. Devin will describe how these sites came to exist, the narratives they promote, and how they impact public culture in the United States today.

The event will be held in Howe Atrium and Parmer Cinema (Boyer Hall), with a meal being served by Messiah’s Two Bridges Catering. Reservation deadline is Oct. 15. If interested, please contact Tracy Sheaffer, library administrative assistant, at tsheaffer@messiah.edu or ext. 7181.

We are planning for the 4 panelists to be asked questions shared with them in advance followed by a Q & A session with the attendees.
