Welcome back from the Office of Academic Accessibility

The Office of Academic Accessibility, formerly known as the Office of Disability Services, would like to offer you a warm welcome back for the fall semester. As many of you may know, there have been conversations through recent years regarding an update to the name of our office to better and more positively reflect its mission. Our dedication to our goals of strong student support through practical, caring encouragement, academic coaching, and personal advocacy has only deepened in recent months, and we are excited to continue serving our students and cultivating our relationships with all of you during the upcoming year. We cordially invite you to reach out to the Office of Academic Accessibility (OAA) with any questions you may have about academic accommodations and student support. State of the University Address

The inaugural State of the University address will be delivered by President Kim Phipps via livestream on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 9:30 a.m. during the regularly scheduled Chapel time. All faculty and staff are warmly invited to tune in by visiting the livestream link at the President’s Office website. As per usual, the written transcript of the President’s address and the accompanying presentation, including a new companion document to the address, will be posted in the days just following the speech for your reference. Thank you for making time in your schedule for this important message and the start of our new year together!

Community pastor announcement

As we consider Christian faith formation and discipleship on campus in 2020/21, Doug Curry and Mina Choi will be giving leadership to a variety of programs and opportunities for students. Since large gatherings will not be possible, the chapel requirement will be waived. Yet, in order to maintain spiritual vitality on campus, Campus Ministries plans to offer the following programs and resources to encourage personal and communal spiritual disciplines:

1. Each Tuesday the Campus Ministries team will launch an online chapel experience, on Thursday a podcast with community members reflecting on the chapel message will launch and during chapel time several online six-week chapel series options will continue to be offered. Each Monday President Phipps will provide a devotional for the community, on Wednesday student ministry leaders will provide a devotional, and on Friday the devotional will be expressed through the arts. Be sure to check your weekly email for links to these offerings.

2. Life Groups, Bible study groups, and prayer ministries will be offered – both in-person and virtually – by student ministry leaders from Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Prayer Outreach Team, and the Logos Ministry Team. These discipleship-based ministries will forge intentional relationships with spiritual accountability, and nurture our students to grow in Biblical literacy and spiritual formation. Students will have the option to sign up for any of these groups individually, or by Residence Hall/Apartment floors to be led and mentored by Student Ministries leaders.

3. Campus Ministries will craft a resource center within FalconLink to provide further discipleship and Christian faith formation resources. This resource center will provide tools for student leaders, employees, and students seeking to explore pathways for continued growth and/or mentoring, and for community members to express prayer concerns and requests for pastoral counseling.

4. Students will be encouraged to get involved with local churches that verify compliance with the University’s risk reduction measures and health practices. This listing will also include streaming options for which our students can participate remotely. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate church bus or van transportation at this time so students will need to coordinate their own transportation. This information has been communicated to local congregations.

In addition, in the absence of a Campus Pastor this year, Stephen Gallaher has agreed to fulfill a one year temporary position as community pastor, primarily serving the spiritual needs of employees. In this role he will…

-Provide regular times of prayer and short devotional for employees. This will be delivered virtually.
-Provide time and space for individual meetings with employees who seek pastoral care. [Email – CommunityPastor@messiah.edu] -Work with supervisors and deans to provide encouragement and support for employees

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and become obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Messiah’s site license to The Chronicle provides unlimited access for everyone whether they are on campus or working remotely.

We’ve heard from a number of institutions about the need to provide administrators, staff, faculty, and students with access to Chronicle content while remote, and we’re here to help. Off-campus users will need an account to log in to Chronicle.com. If they already have an account, they can click “Log In,” at the top right-hand corner of our homepage. Giving Day 2020: date change

Dear faculty, staff and administrators, In light of recent events with COVID-19, we have decided to push the College’s Giving Day back to Thursday, April 30. There is a lot going on in our world, which is why we feel even more committed to our students and have decided to move forward in raising funds to support them. On April 30, we will ask our Messiah Community to rally behind the men and women we teach, mentor, work with and care about. We will be specifically raising funds to support The Good Samaritan Fund and the Messiah Fund, both of which will allow us to best meet the direct needs of our students and our ability to serve them during this pandemic. Would you join us in saving this date on your calendar? We are looking forward to Giving Day and the opportunity it gives our campus to make a unified front in support of our students. More information will be made available closer to April 30 as to how you can collaborate with the Office of Development to make for a successful event! Sincerely, Barry Goodling

In partial fulfillment of her M.A. in Higher Education and under direction of her thesis advisor, Dr. Cynthia Wells, Emma’s research focused on “The impact of faculty growth mindset on student mindset and learning engagement”. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 from Noon – 1 p.m. via Zoom                      (https://messiah.zoom.us/j/395492875) Emma Cartisano Thesis Abstract

Growth mindset is the belief that general intellectual ability is malleable and can be developed This presentation will describe the presence and cultivation of growth mindset in the academic experiences of six undergraduate students in the social sciences at a medium-sized, liberal arts and sciences college. Individual interviews and syllabi were analyzed using narrative inquiry to explore the impact of instructor philosophy and pedagogy on student mindset and learning engagement. Research findings highlight that instructor embodiment of growth mindset, including relationality, modeling, and constructive delivery of feedback, as well as assignment design were instrumental. Participants did not share a common definition of growth mindset but that concepts of competence, grace, and grit were shared. Additionally, participants recognized that mindset exists on a continuum and articulated one or more ways they experienced a shift in their mindset. Recommendations for further research and pedagogical practice will be provided.

“Under the Veil: Medieval Female Theologians and Their Legacy” lecture by Dr. Sharon Putt

The Gender Concerns Committee and Office of Faculty Development would like to invite you to “Under the Veil: Medieval Female Theologians and Their Legacy” lecture by Dr. Sharon Putt, professor of theology and religion, and recipient of a 2019-2020 Riegsecker Gender Concerns grant. Medieval female theologians thought and wrote innovative, provocative theological treatises for the church and, for centuries, the Christian tradition has, with few exceptions, dismissed and ignored them. During these times of extreme gender inequality, church leaders charged these holy women with ailments such as hysteria, narcissism, neurosis and nymphomania. One of these women, however, gained the respect and the ear of a pope. Benedictine Abbess Hildegard of Bingen left us with hundreds of letters and songs, books on healing, physiology and ecology, as well as theological treatises that, if we listen, address contemporary concerns about earth care and peace-making. Her theology of love for God, each other and the earth reaches across the centuries and remains relevant to any person who has ears to hear and heart to respond. Come and hear Putt explore Hildegard’s thought and seek to find ways to incorporate her ideas into our lives for the benefit of the world in which we live. Join us Wednesday, March 25 at 6:15 p.m. in Boyer 131.

WHEN

Filming will occur on Shoemaker Field on Tuesday, April 7, from 8:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (rain location: Jordan Court.) Volunteers must be available for the entire three-hour window, which will include a briefing by the director, placement of individuals for the card stunt, and the filming itself.

You may register to volunteer by using this link. Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Handmade beaded wrap bracelets and more. In my “spare” time I love doing crafts. One of my favorites is creating wrapped bracelets, earrings, sea glass necklaces. I have soooo many. I can only picture one here, so if you’d like to see more, I can either email you some pictures or you can stop by my office and take a look through all that I have (Naugle). They make great gifts, and with Easter coming up a great little gift for the basket. My wrap bracelets are $15 ea. or 2/$25. Sea glass necklaces are $10. And no two are alike. Email me at sportko@messiah.edu

Welcome Week reservation requests

Due to the high volume of events that occur during the start of each academic year, the offices of Conference and Event Services and Student Involvement and Leadership Programs have made some adjustments to the room reservation process during Leadership Launch Week and Welcome Week. According to recent data released by the US Fire Administration for 2008-2017, the US had an annual average of 1,344,100 fires, resulting in 3,190 civilian deaths, 16,225 civilian injuries, and $14.7 billion in direct property loss each year. Don’t become part of these statistics.

Advisor needed for Spring Break 2020 service trip

The Agapé Center for Service and Learning is in search of a professional staff advisor for our Spring Break service trip to Priority One Ministries (Bronx, NY). Priority One Ministries is a long-time partner of Messiah College. The Spring Break service trip will take place from March 14-20. All costs are covered for trip advisors. Because we seek to make our service trips an opportunity for student leaders to grow and develop skills in leading, reflection and facilitation, the trip advisor simply serves as a resource and encouragement for student leaders and assists in any problem-solving that may arise. If you are interested in serving as an advisor or have additional questions, please contact Sharde Hardy at shardy@messiah.edu by Feb. 28.
