NEWS

Dr. Caroline Maurer, dean of the school of business, education and social sciences (BESS), has accepted a position as director of global engagement at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Washington. Her last day at the College will be Sept. 13. We appreciate Maurer’s leadership during the past six years. Her focus on faculty support and development, community engagement and international education along with her passion for Christian higher education will be missed. We wish her the best in her new position.

Dr. Peter Powers, dean of the school of humanities, has agreed to also serve as interim dean of BESS during this upcoming year. Stephanie Patterson will continue as administrative assistant for the school. The transition to new interim leadership will begin Aug. 26.

New employees – To request a parking permit or register a new vehicle:

From Messiah College homepage, under Faculty & Staff “QUICKLINKS,” log into “FALCONLINK.”
Search for FalconPark in the search box.
Click on “Employee Vehicle Registration” (web form). (Please be sure that you continue until you reach a page that reads, “Completed” and gives you a reference number.) Your parking permit will be sent to you through campus mail.

Previously registered employees – You do not need to re-register. Your current, orange parking permit has an expiration date of August 2019 but is actually valid until August 2020.

By Sept. 2, all employees must park in their assigned employee lot, which is specified on your employee parking hangtag. If your lot is completely full, please call Dispatch at ext. 6005. Please refer all questions on existing and new employee parking permits to JoAnn Schaeffer at ext. 7147 or jschaeffer@messiah.edu.

Welcome to Enrollment Management!

Sierra Kinslow ’17 will join us as the assistant director of admissions, multicultural recruitment Sept. 2. She has worked in the graduate admissions office for the last two years as a graduate enrollment counselor, and she’ll finish her master’s degree in higher education in May 2020. As a student, she served as an undergraduate admissions student worker, ambassador and Amigo scholar. Kinslow will work with domestic students from Dauphin County and serve our international students. She will lead strategy related to domestic underrepresented student recruitment and international student recruitment and manage the Martin and R.H. Flowers Multicultural Scholarship process.

Work-study computers

As the summer comes to an end, ITS would like to ask you to power on all work-study and adjunct computers. Since these computers have not been in use during the summer, they will be slower than usual while updates are being done. Updates will happen automatically on the computers. The Graduate Program in Higher Education is pleased to welcome 12 new graduate assistants for the academic year 2019-2020 on the Messiah campus and at partner institutions. Graduate assistantships offer graduate students the opportunity to put the educational theories gained through classroom instruction into professional practice through supervised, real-world experience. Our graduate assistantship program aims to provide an innovative and cost-efficient way to advance departmental and college-wide goals and objectives.

Messiah College will be welcoming our new students to campus for the start of Welcome Week Friday, Aug. 30. Our theme for Welcome Week this year is “ALL IN” as we encourage students to take ownership of their Messiah experience, fully committing to their new community and responsibilities. Our theme verse is Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Retirement Reception

Please join the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in thanking Steve Funck for his work at the college and celebrating in his retirement! A reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, between 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Hollinger Atrium of the Jordan Science Center. There will be some brief remarks at 4 p.m. Steve worked as a natural sciences laboratory program manager for 12 years, serving the college exceptionally well in the areas of safety, compliance and chemical inventory control and serving the department in all facets of our laboratory program.

We will also meet the many alumni who are employed there and hear about their initiatives in engineering, global relief work and business development. This event is open to any major; students with a background in engineering, computer science, business or global development may be especially interested in attending.

Into the City – Upstate New York

Into the City – Upstate New York – Oct. 9-12 We are heading to beautiful upstate New York to visit the many Messiah College alumni in the Buffalo area. Site visits include the Buffalo Bills, New Era Cap, M&T Bank, Jericho Road, Baillie Lumber and more! Students will also be able to tour the spectacular Finger Lakes region with the option of hiking along the waterfall trails, and will visit Niagara Falls (which will include a boat ride into the falls aboard the incredible “Maid of the Mist”!). Student successfully passes CFA Level I exam

Congratulations to Levi Greenly, a senior finance major in the Department of Business, for successfully passing Level I of the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam. Over 250,000 candidates sat for the CFA exams worldwide and the pass rate for Level I was only 41%. Levi’s test score placed him well above the 90th percentile for all the candidates who took the Level I exam in June. The 6-hour exam covered topics in economics, statistics, accounting, corporate finance, equity/fixed income analysis and derivatives. Messiah College has been a member of the CFA University Affiliation program since 2018, which enabled Levi to receive a full scholarship to take the exam. We wish Levi continued success as he moves on to Level II of the exam!

Enrollment Management is excited to announce the addition of two new team members: Marianne Ramirez Gomez ’19 will join us as an admissions counselor, coordinator of Latino student recruitment on August 15. She served as student body vice-president, worked as a student in admissions and the multicultural office, was an ambassador, member of the Multicultural Council and an RH Flower recipient. She has been an intern for the Latino Hispanic American Community Center in Harrisburg and a community service volunteer for two summers in her home city of Reading. Marianne will have domestic territory in southeastern PA, Philadelphia, New York City, central Maryland, Washington DC, Florida and the southwest. She will also assist in planning and supporting Multicultural Scholarship Days and serving on the Ambassador Leadership Team. Multicultural student orientation

Within our commitment to student success and engagement at Messiah College is a strong drive to foster a sense of belonging for all of our students. Based on sound academic research and data, we recognize that students of color face unique challenges on predominantly white campuses. To address this, the Intercultural Office hosts a Multicultural Student Orientation to provide opportunities for our incoming students of color to make early connections with each other and with key educators prior to participating in Welcome Week activities. Graduate TESOL students provide ESL camp for Christian school

Four graduate TESOL students, under the direction of their professor, Dr. Jan Dormer, recently provided the instruction for an ESL Camp at Delaware Co. Christian School. The fourteen ESL students had just arrived from China, and ranged from grades 7 to 11. The diverse topics covered in the week of ESL classes ranged from PA ecosystems to group work expectations in American education to an introduction to the Bible. Additional informal English language development occurred through fun outings such as kayaking and a scavenger hunt at King of Prussia mall. Our Graduate TESOL Program is anticipating a strong partnership with Delaware Co. Christian School as they seek to meet the needs of their international students.

The School of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce that Leanne Rutt, the Messiah College Master of Occupational Therapy assistant program director will begin as the MOT program director starting Aug. 25; this coincides with the start of the fall 2019 graduate semester. Leanne has been a key contributor to the success of Messiah’s ACOTE accreditation process, has strong teaching gifts and deep connections to the central PA OT community. She recently completed her OTD at Thomas Jefferson University. She brings energy, excitement and experience in teaching, administration and clinical OT practice to the program. We are thankful for the work of interim director, Dr. Paula Kramer, who provided critical leadership to the MOT Program during the ACTOE accreditation process.

The provost is pleased to announce the appointment of Kim Fenstermacher as assistant dean of nursing, effective Aug. 1. In this role, Fenstermacher will serve as chief nursing administrator for all Messiah College undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nursing, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). This comprehensive leadership model centralizes and subsumes the roles of the undergraduate department chair and the director of graduate programs and facilitates focused vision and streamlined oversight for all aspects of our nursing program. Reporting to Fenstermacher, Louann Zinsmeister will lead as coordinator of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and the certificate of advanced graduate studies (CAGS), and Kristen Slabaugh will lead as coordinator of the doctor of nursing practice-family nurse practitioner (DNP-FNP). Nancy Frank will serve as assistant coordinator of undergraduate nursing.

Training provided at Messiah for volunteers in church-based ESL programs

Last week Dr. Jan Dormer provided two full days of training for volunteers in church-based ESL programs. Many adult immigrants rely on the free ESL classes provided by churches, and yet churches often do not have personnel trained in TESOL to run and teach in these programs. Training sessions such as this one can help to fill the gap, by providing some information about teaching and learning English for volunteers in such programs. We had 23 participants, for two days of intensive training. Messiah College is pleased to play a small role in the service churches are providing for their local immigrant communities.

From July 10-12 the Messiah College Graduate TESOL Program provided a three-day intensive English course for local adult ESL students. Sixteen ESL students were taught by seven TESOL graduate students, as part of their TESOL Methods and internship courses. Directed by Dr. Jan Dormer, the intensive ESL event proved to be beneficial for students and teacher-trainees alike.

We will be giving all of the outside Early Learning Center playground equipment away for free. The taker will be responsible to dissemble it and move. It must be removed before July 26, 2019. We are delighted to announce that Greg Lowe has accepted our invitation to serve as executive director of the newly formed Messiah Business Institute (MBI) to be housed on the Grantham campus. MBI is a consortium of family and closely-held businesses in Central Pennsylvania that seeks to build and support a thriving business community within our region. MBI will offer its members a series of workshops each year provided by regional and national experts, a breakfast speaker series and peer group roundtable discussions. MBI is funded by corporate sponsors and membership fees and will be housed in the advancement division of the College.

Greg Lowe is a recently retired partner of McKonly & Asbury, an accounting firm in Mechanicsburg. His professional experience also includes serving as president of the solutions division of ADT Data Systems/IntelliMark/Technisource; founding and owning a consulting firm focused on small to mid-sized businesses; and serving as district manager for Nestle Foods. He co-owns Classical Academic Press, a publishing company in Camp Hill, where he has six Messiah alumni on staff. He has hired more than 60 graduates during his career.

We look forward to many opportunities for Messiah students to interact with local business leaders—leading to new internships and jobs for our students and alumni.

Dogs on campus

Messiah is a beautiful, open campus with lots of green space that provides a wonderful area for dog owners to walk their dogs. However, there are rules pertaining to having a dog on campus.

All dogs MUST be leashed at all times; they are not permitted to run at large at any time.
Dogs are NOT permitted in any campus building.
Dogs are permitted on the Cumberland County side ONLY of the Yellow Breeches. This is the side where all the academic buildings are located.
DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE STARRY FIELD SIDE AT ANY TIME; this includes being on any of the athletic fields and in the parking lot areas, including Treona.
All handlers are to clean up after their dogs at all times.

Exemption: If the dog is a service dog or an emotional support animal, the above rules in reference to location areas do not apply.

As a reminder, Monaghan Township has a township ordinance related to dogs running at large on property not belonging to the owner/handler. The Department of Safety will be monitoring Starry Field and if dogs and handlers are found, you will be asked to leave the Starry Field area.

RefWorks Contract

Many free citation management tools are now available on the web. RefWorks, a legacy citation management tool costing the college approximately $5,000/year, is under-utilized. Library staff, the Educational Technology Committee, and the Information and Web Technology Committee recommend the RefWorks contract not be renewed in July. This means anyone using RefWorks will need to export and move citations from RefWorks to a new citation management tool by June 30. Those with RefWorks content should set up a time with a librarian to migrate content to Zotero prior to June 30.
