Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Kuniak, assistant professor in the Graduate Program in Counseling, who has been elected the 52nd Pennsylvania Counseling Association (PCA) president. Kuniak earned his Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from Duquesne University in 2014. He also earned his master’s in counselor education, focusing on marriage, couple and family counseling, from Duquesne in 2008. He is a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania and has been practicing for over a decade in the areas of family counseling, addictions counseling, and in private practice. Stop the bleed training offered

Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. When severe, uncontrolled bleeding occurs, every second counts. The Department of Homeland Security launched the “Stop the Bleed” campaign to raise public awareness and knowledge on how to prevent these deaths. In an effort to better prepare our campus community for any emergency, “Stop the Bleed” training will be offered on Monday, April 15 to all employees and all students. This training will be conducted by employees of the Geisinger Holy Spirit Education Center. There are still openings in the session offered in Hostetter Chapel at 2-3 p.m. Openings are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up for this training, go to FalconLink. Search for Training and click on the “All Training Classes” link that appears. Click on the drop down arrow under “Click Here to See Available Classes.” Select “Stop the Bleed” and then click on the pencil icon in front of the session; follow the directions to register.

Spring 2019 Shred Day

Shredding Solutions will be on campus for confidential document shredding. On Tuesday, April 16, they will provide a shred truck on campus. The truck will be located in the service area parking spots located outside Hoffman Hall and will be available from 11 a.m. -1 p.m.

Please use this opportunity to purge your office/work areas of documentation that contains confidential information that has met its retention requirements and is no longer needed. What can be shredded? All forms of documentation containing confidential information can be included in this campus shred day. Secured data, all sizes, color and texture of paper will be accepted. The shredding truck can shred/destroy staples and paperclips, but ALL BINDER CLIPS MUST BE REMOVED and documents in binders will not be accepted. (You will have the opportunity to observe your documents throughout the shredding process if you wish.) Personal documents in small/reasonable amounts (paper box full or less) are also welcome to be brought in for shredding. Shredding instructions: Normal shredding needs: Please bring all paper for shredding directly to the truck beginning at 11 a.m. It is the goal to complete all shredding needs in the designated two (2) hours scheduled; plan to bring paper between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (please note, the shredding truck will be leaving promptly at 1 p.m.; we suggest arriving no later than 12:45 p.m.). Announcing the 2019-20 Sawyer Digital Proficiency Initiative fellows

Retirement recognition for Rhonda and Jake Jacobsen

After serving as educators, scholars and faculty leaders at Messiah College for the past 35 years, Dr. Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen, professor of psychology and recent director of faculty development, and Dr. Douglas (Jake) Jacobsen, distinguished professor of church history and theology and coordinator of Christian scholarship, have announced their planned retirement at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Rhonda began her career as a professor of psychology and became the director of faculty development in 1996. In her more than two decades in faculty development, Rhonda served as a support, resource and advocate for faculty scholarship at the College and provided leadership for both new faculty as well as more seasoned Messiah educators.

In addition to his position as distinguished professor of church history and theology, Jake has served for many years as the coordinator of Christian scholarship and college identity, a role through which he created opportunities for faculty to engage with the enlivening ideas and questions of scholarship informed by Christian faith.

In addition to campus leadership, Jake and Rhonda served as co-directors of the Lilly-funded Clergy Leadership program, have published numerous scholarly books and articles, and been sought-after speakers for conferences around the globe. We are pleased to invite the Messiah community to join us in celebrating their dedication and service to the College on Thursday, May 2 from 3-5 p.m. in Howe Atrium, Boyer Hall. A drop-in reception with hors d’oeuvres is planned at 3 p.m. with a program honoring Rhonda and Jake beginning at 4 p.m.

Tara Savarino, adjunct instructor of music (voice), was invited to participate in the Rider University Gender & Sexuality Studies Colloquium. She was asked to present her paper, “The Ties that Bind: Examining Feminist Traditions in the Compositions of Libby Larsen, Jeanine Tesori, and India Arie”. The colloquium will take place on April 11.

Jennifer Fisler, professor of education, was recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators (PAC-TE). She will be representing private colleges and universities. PAC-TE is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to providing opportunities for members’ professional development and strong advocacy for educator preparation within the Commonwealth.

Mock drill today!

Today, March 28, Messiah College will be coordinating and participating in an emergency drill on campus. The drill will take place in central campus in the area of the YY parking lot, Hoffman and the Library from 9 – 11 a.m. The College is not inviting outside emergency agencies to this exercise. This exercise is required to meet the compliance criteria of the Clery Act. If in your normal business you come to the area of the exercise, please follow the directions of the staff and do not enter the area marked off. This is not a public spectator event. If you are not part of the response teams or are not directly involved with the drill, please avoid this area if possible. The Crisis Management Team and Department of Safety thank you for your cooperation during this mock drill. Exercises such as this help Messiah College meet compliance standards and to improve the effectiveness of our emergency planning.

Voice student wins in regional competition!

Caleb Wenger, first year performance voice student of Dr. Damian Savarino, entered the National Association of Teachers of Singing Eastern Regional competition. The competition was hosted by Nazareth College in Rochester, New York and welcomed students of all levels from Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Quebec (including the Ottawa area) and West Virginia. In both the Freshmen Classical Men and Freshmen Music Theatre divisions, Caleb advanced through two levels of the competition to the Finals Concert. In the Finals Concert, he performed one piece from his repertoire for each division and placed 1st in the Classical division and 2nd in the Music Theatre division. School of Humanities summer academic camps

This summer, the School of the Humanities will hold three academic camps.

FaithWorks@MessiahCollege is a unique summer experience connecting faith and service. Students will learn from our faculty in Bible, ministry and theology, spend time with college student mentors, work alongside others as they invest in their communities and celebrate the gift of their faith and the joy of doing God’s work. The Young Filmmakers’ Workshop provides college-level filmmaking skills for students in rising grades 10-12. Students will leave with an understanding of how to be a writer, director, actor, cinematographer and editor. This camp is held on June 23 – 28. The Young Writers’ Workshop provides college-level writing skills development for students in rising grades 9 – 12. Congratulations to Dr. Robert Reyes, professor of human development and family science, for being elected to the Board of Directors of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Congratulations also to Dr. Raeann Hamon, distinguished professor of family science and gerontology, for being elected to the chair-elect position of the International Section of NCFR. NCFR is the premier professional association for understanding families through interdisciplinary research, theory and practice.

Professor of the History of Science Ted Davis will give a plenary address at a conference on “ADAM, THE FALL, & THE GOODNESS OF GOD,” later this month at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

Tara Savarino, adjunct instructor of music (voice), was invited to participate in the Rider University Gender & Sexuality Studies Colloquium. She was asked to present her paper, “The Ties that Bind: Examining Feminist Traditions in the Compositions of Libby Larsen, Jeanine Tesori, and India Arie”. Voice student wins in regional competition!

Caleb Wenger, first year performance voice student of Dr. Damian Savarino, entered the National Association of Teachers of Singing Eastern Regional competition. The competition was hosted by Nazareth College in Rochester, New York and welcomed students of all levels from Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Quebec (including the Ottawa area) and West Virginia. In both the Freshmen Classical Men and Freshmen Music Theatre divisions, Caleb advanced through two levels of the competition to the Finals Concert. In the Finals Concert, he performed one piece from his repertoire for each division and placed 1st in the Classical division and 2nd in the Music Theatre division. Artist event: book crafter Dannielle Vincent demonstration

On Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. on the Library’s main floor, College Press and Murray Library welcome book crafter Dannielle Vincent who will be speaking about and demonstrating her work in creatively altering and repurposing books. Dannielle Vincent’s hand-folded book art and patterns caught the attention of the Longwood Gardens staff, who commissioned her to create pieces for their very popular Christmas exhibits. In addition, she was the first artist ever to have their work featured on the cover of Longwood’s Holiday brochure. Through video and hands-on demonstration, Dannielle will demonstrate how she creates a pattern and then folds a book to create a work of art, and will also speak about the steps of starting an online business. Focus groups

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Messiah College will explore how incarnating our mission as a Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences in a rapidly changing and increasingly skeptical cultural context contributes to the common good of church and society – a common good rooted in a Christ-centered commitment to the dignity, welfare and human flourishing of all our neighbors. The Office of the President is sponsoring a lecture series devoted to this exploration. George Pickens’ lecture will take place on Tuesday evening, March 26 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The lecture will be 30 minutes and followed by a Q & A session. Chapel credits will be offered.

Service Day: Serve with Area M Special Olympics

Messiah College, in partnership with Area M, is once again hosting more than 1,100 athletes on April 11 to compete in the 50th Anniversary of the Area M Special Olympic Games. These games cannot happen without your help! While all educators and students in Created and Called for Community classes will be serving as buddies (and do not need to register), we are currently looking for volunteers to help with set-up/clean-up, provide support for swimming or track & field events, and assist in day-of event logistics. Shutting down MCSquare

In the beginning of October, ITS launched Falconlink to the campus community. Since that time, FalconLink has been updated to address minor bugs, add cards and improve the overall user experience. Now that all the content from MCSquare has been moved to FalconLink and quite a few new cards have been created, the time has come to shut down MCSquare. On Tuesday, March 26, MCSquare will no longer be accessible. If you have any bookmarks pointing to MCSquare, they will automatically be directed to FalconLink. If you are unable to find a card, or discover a card doesn’t work properly, simply click on the message icon to the right of the search box to let us know.

Dr. Dottie Weigel, assistant professor and director of the Graduate Program in Higher Education, and Keyauna Moore, graduate assistant for academic advising, presented a conference session entitled, “Supporting International and Third-Culture Students’ First-Year Transition” at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as baritone saxophonist with The Temptations and The Four Tops in concert in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Feb. 23. The two legendary Motown groups have charted a total of 62 top 40 hit songs.

Todd Goranson, professor of music, concluded a series of forty single reed clinics at 27 elementary, middle and high schools in the mid-Atlantic area from August 2018 through February 2019. He gave clinics as part of the Vandoren Regional Artist outreach program, providing free instruction at public schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia on saxophone and clarinet pedagogy, approaches to practice and careers in music.

Harrisburg Academy (10 Erford Rd., Wormleysburg, PA) will host an exciting cultural immersion summer camp for Chinese students in middle school and we are seeking host families! The camp will take place July 20 to Aug. 3, with weekday activities on the Harrisburg Academy campus and chaperoned weekend day trips. Host families will receive a generous stipend to help offset the cost of hosting (meals, transportation, etc.); host families will pick up their student(s) at Harrisburg Academy on July 20 and will provide transportation to and from Harrisburg Academy from July 22 until their departure on Aug. 3. Dwayne Magee, director of college press and postal services, has been appointed to serve on the Postmaster General’s Mailers Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC). MTAC is a venue for the United States Postal Service to share technical information with mailers, and to receive their advice and recommendations on matters concerning mail-related products and services, in order to enhance customer value and expand the use of these products and services for the mutual benefit of mailing industry stakeholders and the Postal Service.

In addition, Dwayne has been re-certified in the Certified Graphic Communications Manager Program. He had to accumulate a minimum of 15 professional credits through sources such as membership in the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA), attending IPMA annual educational conference or other educational seminars related to graphic arts; writing published articles related to graphic arts or management; serving as a volunteer leader for IPMA or other professional graphic arts associations; or instructing or lecturing on graphic arts or management. Nearly 400 men and women in the corporate publishing profession have earned the designation. Please congratulate Dwayne on this recognition and service to his profession.

Trio Atlantis and the Messiah College Symphony Orchestra

Campus Climate Action Team

As you may recall, Messiah College conducted a Campus Climate Survey in March 2017 and the results were formally presented and disseminated across campus in the Spring of 2018. Click here to see more information on the results presented.

One of the outcomes of the survey was the formation of a Campus Climate Action Team (CCAT), the purpose of which is to provide a more in depth analysis of the results and to make recommendations to College leadership.

The CCAT includes:

• Dr. Todd Allen (special assistant to the president and provost for diversity affairs, and professor of communication) and Inger Blount (director of human resources) as co-chairs
• Bryan Brunk (wrestling coach)
• Meg Jones Hoover (career coach)
• Asha Early (sous chef)
• Dr. Jim LaGrand  (director of the College Honors Program and professor of history)
• Allan Matthew (director of graduate enrollment)
• Hannah McBride (violence prevention coordinator).

Specifically, the CCAT has been charged with focusing on the five priorities identified in the survey results by the President’s Cabinet and developing recommendations for education and programming designed to address the priorities. To that end, the CCAT is partnering with colleagues from the Graduate Program in Higher Education at Penn State University. Led by Dr. Dave Guthrie, a team from Penn State will be coming to campus to host focus groups during the months of March and April. The purpose of these focus groups is to gather information on the intersection of the identified priorities with student /employee experiences and perspectives.

The opportunity to sign up for participating in these focus groups will be sent in the coming weeks. The PSU team is finalizing the exact number of focus groups and numbers participants needed. If you are not selected to a particular focus group or your schedule doesn’t permit participating, you will still have the opportunity to provide feedback electronically. Additional information regarding this process will be forthcoming.

Dr. Eric Rawson, professor of exercise science and chair of the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science, is an author of the recently released 12th edition of the book Nutrition for Health, Fitness, and Sport (Williams, Rawson, & Branch: McGraw-Hill Education).

Karl Bergmann, assistant director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, presented at the South Central District Meeting of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association Jan. 29. More than 50 attendees watch his presentation titled “Impairment Based Conservative Management of Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI).” This was the first time the district had ever done a presentation that was completely virtual, and it was a record attendance for the district. The executive board of the South Central District of the PPTA was elated by the turnout.

Emily Farrar, assistant professor of engineering, and two engineering students—Emma Vogan and Castine Donoff—presented their work on designing and implementing a system for 3D printing prosthetics and orthotics in partnership with CURE Kenya at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) regional conference in Baltimore, Maryland, Feb. 8-9. Vogan won second place and Donoff won fourth place in the collegiate competition for their posters and “lightning talks” on this project. The awards will cover their conference expenses, and their work was highlighted at the SWE awards banquet. These projects are part of the Collaboratory for Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research. Both students plan to travel to Kenya this summer in order to implement their work with the CURE orthopedic workshop staff at the Kijabe, Kenya hospital.

Fire extinguisher training offered to all employees and students

Fire extinguisher training will be conducted Feb. 26 – March 1 in Hostetter Chapel, conference room 113. This training consists of a demonstration of the use of the extinguisher and then the opportunity for each participant to experience “hands-on” practice in extinguishing a “fire.” Training on the types of fires and extinguishers as well as initial instruction on the P.A.S.S. system for using extinguishers is provided via an online course that must be completed prior to the actual hands-on session. There are several sessions offered each day. To sign up for a time that fits your schedule, go to FalconLink; type “training” in the search window; and click on All Training Classes. 2019 graduate assistant positions

Promotion of Mark Graybill

The College has been advertising and interviewing for a replacement to fill the vacant grounds manager position. We received many qualified applicants for this position from all over the region and conducted interviews. I am pleased to announce that the position was offered to Mark Graybill and he has accepted. Mark has been a member of the Grounds Department for 11 years and most recently served as groundskeeper/sports turf leader. Please join me in congratulating Mark on his promotion. Honoring Evie Telfer

Many of you have already heard that Evie Telfer is moving on, but not far. After 22 years of pouring out her love and wisdom in ministry to Messiah College students, Evie has decided to serve as a pastor at Messiah Lifeways. Evie will still be active on campus through Easter, beginning her new role on May 7. Since Evie is an outdoor-loving farm girl at heart, some kind of creekside picnic will be planned for formal farewells later this spring. Rescheduled Presidential Lecture Series Promoting the Common Good

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Messiah College will explore how incarnating our mission as a Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences in a rapidly changing and increasingly skeptical cultural context contributes to the common good of church and society – a common good rooted in a Christ-centered commitment to the dignity, welfare and human flourishing of all our neighbors. The Office of the President is sponsoring a lecture series devoted to this exploration.

Todd Allen’s lecture, “Understanding our Civil rights Past, Shaping our Shared Future” will take place on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The lecture will be 30 minutes and followed by a Q & A session. Chapel credits will be offered.

Senior Lecturer of Applied Health and Director of Wellness Mindy Smith received the Pearl Berlin Graduate Student Writing Award for her literature review “Support for Collegiate Student-Athletes in the Transition to Meaningful Lifetime Physical Activity.” The award is given for meritorious writing to a graduate student in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina (Greensboro), where Smith is a student.

Karl Bergmann, assistant director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, presented at the South Central District Meeting of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association Jan. 29. More than 50 attendees watch his presentation titled “Impairment Based Conservative Management of Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI).” This was the first time the district had ever done a presentation that was completely virtual, and it was a record attendance for the district. The executive board of the South Central District of the PPTA was elated by the turn out.

Paul Johns, assistant professor of human development and family science, successfully defended his dissertation titled “Husbands’ Experience of Being Trusted by Their Wives: A Heuristic Study.” Johns completed his Ph.D. in professional counseling from Liberty University in December 2018. Congratulations to Dr. Paul Johns!

Emily Farrar, assistant professor of engineering, and two engineering students—Emma Vogan and Castine Donoff—presented their work on designing and implementing a system for 3D printing prosthetics and orthotics in partnership with CURE Kenya at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) regional conference in Baltimore, Maryland, Feb. 8-9, 2019. Vogan won second place and Donoff won fourth place in the collegiate competition for their posters and “lightning talks” on this project. The awards will cover their conference expenses, and their work was highlighted at the SWE awards banquet. These projects are part of the Collaboratory for Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research. Both students plan to travel to Kenya this summer in order to implement their work with the CURE orthopedic workshop staff at the Kijabe, Kenya, hospital.

Amy Porto, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics, has been selected as the recipient of the 2019 Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award (Didactic Program in Dietetics category). The award is based on exceptional accomplishments and qualifications in the field. She will receive the award at the 2019 Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting (AME) in Pittsburgh March 30.

This career immersion experience will take place April 7-9 and promises students a high-impact, hands-on, educational experience through site visits, alumni panels and networking receptions. Lecture on Anabaptism at Messiah College

 Join the Sider Institute at Messiah College for its annual Schrag Lecture Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. This year’s speaker is Donald Kraybill, senior fellow emeritus at the Young Center at Elizabethtown College. Kraybill’s lecture, “The Power of Elasticity: A Tale of Anabaptism at Two Colleges,” will describe how two Christian institutions—Messiah College and Eastern Mennonite University—tapped into the theological resources of the Anabaptist movement, often in different ways. Learn about the power and malleability of Anabaptism, a theological heritage shared by Eastern Mennonite and Messiah! The lecture is free and open to the public.

Purchasing card refresher training

Beginning in February, purchasing card refresher training will be required every two years for employees who have a College-issued purchasing card (P-Card or DB-Card). Fire extinguisher training offered to all employees and students

Fire extinguisher training will be conducted Feb. 26 – March 1 in Hostetter Chapel, conference room 113. This training consists of a demonstration of the use of the extinguisher and then the opportunity for each participant to experience “hands-on” practice in extinguishing a “fire.” Training on the types of fires and extinguishers as well as initial instruction on the P.A.S.S. system for using extinguishers is provided via an online course that must be completed prior to the actual hands-on session. There are several sessions offered each day. To sign up for a time that fits your schedule, go to FalconLink; type “training” in the search window; and click on All Training Classes. (You may be asked to provide your login). Click on the drop down arrow in the box under CLICK HERE TO SEE AVAILABLE CLASSES and select Fire Extinguisher Training. From the list that appears, select the session you want. Click on the pencil in front of the session you wish to take and follow the instructions for registering. 2019 graduate assistant positions

Reminders to faculty from the office of disability services

Welcome back, faculty!

As we begin the 2019 spring semester, the Office of Disability Services (ODS) would like to share a few reminders with you concerning students who receive accommodations through our office.

• Confidentiality is vital. Legally, if a student is receiving services from ODS, these services must remain confidential. Please handle accommodations in a way that will draw the least amount of attention to the fact that the student is receiving an accommodation.
• Accommodations are mandatory. After a student has followed the proper procedure to receive reasonable accommodations through our office, it becomes the institution’s responsibility to honor those accommodations to the best of its ability for his or her well-being. Please encourage and never dissuade a student to make full use of the eligible accommodations.
• Words matter. Although they may be spoken with good intentions, certain remarks concerning accommodations might have negative ramifications. Please try to stay away from comments concerning a student’s actual need for his or her accommodation. A statement like “You probably won’t need the extra time for this test” can put unnecessary (and possibly detrimental) pressure on a student. It is also a violation of the ADA.  Empathy and sensitivity go a long way!
• Care makes a difference. You have the opportunity to share the love of Christ with our students in a unique way and to be an encourager during their college years.

Jocelyn Goranson, adjunct instructor of flute and music theory, performed a recital titled “Let the Earth Rejoice” on Jan. 18 during a guest artist visit to Penn State University, where she also taught a masterclass for the Department of Music. She performed the same program on Jan. 27 at St. John’s Hain’s United Church of Christ in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, as part of their Annie Gaul Concert Series. Jocelyn was joined by Baltimore-area clarinetist Dr. Fiona Knoll, and Messiah College graduate Douglas Beach on piano.

Dr. Scott Kieffer, professor of health and exercise physiology, was quoted in The Strategist (New York Magazine) article “Does the Arc Trainer Really Burn As Many Calories As It Claims?” on Jan. 14. Scott has researched exercisers’ calorie burn in comparison to the machine’s display.

Delay/closure information

If it becomes necessary to delay or cancel classes due to weather on the Grantham campus and at the Winding Hill facility, only those students and employees who have signed up for text alerts will receive a text notice regarding such a delay or closure. A delay or closure notification will also be placed on the home page of the College’s website, as well as being available by calling the emergency information line at 717-691-6084; a recording will provide you with a date and time of the most recent message. Morning announcements are made no later than 6:30 a.m. If in doubt, please check the website or call the information line if you are not signed up for text alerts. This information is NOT provided to the local media.

Please note, any notice of a delay and/or cancellation of an EVENT hosted at the College will only be available on the emergency line and not through the text alert system or website. Employees involved in snow removal, facilities, campus events, and dining should follow the instructions given by their respective supervisory staff during a delay or closure.

Passport Services – Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019

Representatives from the Cumberland County Court House will be on campus at the Eisenhower Commons between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019 to process passport applications.

Applicants need to bring the following documents: • Original birth certificate, PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE • Driver’s license PLUS A PHOTOCOPY OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE. • Copy both front and back of the driver’s license on the same side of the page • Non-PA residents also need to bring their Messiah ID along with a photocopy of their ID • Completed application • Fees ($110 check made out to the U.S. Department of State and $35 cash or check made out to the Prothonotary’s Office) • Photo services will be available. Cost is $10 in cash or check made out to Messiah College.

Shale Play: Poems and Photographs from the Fracking Fields

An exhibition in collaboration with the Department of English will take place Feb. 6- March 15 titled “Shale Play: Poems and Photographs from the Fracking Fields” by Julia Kasdorf and Steven Rubin. “Shale Play,” a singular work from an award-winning poet and a veteran documentary photographer, tracks the natural gas boom in the small towns, fields and forests of Appalachian Pennsylvania. In the era of the visual and verbal meme, Rubin and Kasdorf pair documentary poems with photographs in a volume that can be held in the human hand and shared, even in communities that lack high speed internet access. A passionate work of listening, looking and witness, “Shale Play” follows the documentarians of the 1930s but in color and contemporary poetics, and once again dares us to care.

ADDITIVE PROCESS: Art of Additive Manufacturing Taekyeom Lee

Taekyeom Lee is an interdisciplinary artist, although he prefers to introduce himself as a designer using artist’s material and artistic sensibility. It is already undeniable that we are facing a paradigm shift in many forms of art and design as the exciting and rapidly changing digital environment introduces new possibilities. Three-dimensional printing, in particular, has become more refined, common and accessible. As the extension of hands, these new technologies became new tools for pushing the boundaries of the ceramic medium, both regarding concept and materiality. Presidential Lecture Series, Promoting the Common Good

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Messiah College will explore how incarnating our mission as a Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences in a rapidly changing and increasingly skeptical cultural context contributes to the common good of church and society – a common good rooted in a Christ-centered commitment to the dignity, welfare and human flourishing of all our neighbors. The Office of the President is sponsoring a lecture series devoted to this exploration. Todd Allen’s lecture, “Understanding our Civil rights Past, Shaping our Shared Future” will take place on Tuesday evening, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Hall. The lecture will be 30 minutes and followed by a Q and A session. Chapel credits will be offered.

Gathering of church-based ESL program leaders

On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Graduate Program in Education hosted a gathering for those involved in Church-based ESL. Held at the Winding Hill campus, over 50 participants gathered to connect and learn. Many churches and several different programs were represented. Dr. Jan Dormer provided sessions on second language acquisition and English ministry, with ample discussion time for reflecting together on effectiveness and mission. All indicated that they would appreciate more such gatherings, and our program is looking at how we can continue to serve churches that are stepping into the gap to meet the needs of the immigrants in our communities.

Purchasing Card refresher training

Beginning in February, purchasing card refresher training will be required every two years for employees who have a College-issued purchasing card (P-Card or DB-Card). Several months prior to your renewal date, you will receive details about signing up for a refresher class that focuses on common questions and audit issues. Mendelssohn Piano Trio, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m., High Foundation Recital Hall

The Mendelssohn Piano Trio celebrates female composers’ unique contributions to the 400-year tradition of classical music. The program will feature Piano Trios by four female composers from the U.S., France, Germany and the United Kingdom: Amy Beach, Cecile Chaminade, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and Rebecca Clarke. Sondheim’s musical comedy “Company” debuts Thursday

ITS has been made aware of upcoming visual changes to the online Microsoft Office365 icons. Initially, this visual change will only affect the online version of these applications. These changes are scheduled by Microsoft for a February rollout.

New mass email system coming soon to Messiah

Do you ever utilize Messiah’s mass e-mail system to send messages or announcements? Do you have an event you need to promote or important information you need to convey to the campus community? For the past two years, a new mass e-mail system has been in development, one with greater flexibility and improved functionality. We are excited to announce that this upgrade will occur at the end of February. We are currently in our final testing phase and training opportunities will be available in a few weeks. Please sign up for one of the training sessions. These will occur in Parmer Cinema and the dates and times are as follows: Feb. 26: 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 27:  9 to 10 a.m. You may sign up simply by e-mailing CollegePress@Messiah.edu with your name, e-mail address, phone extension (if applicable), and preferred date for training. The Collaboratory, together with Mennonite Central Committee [MCC] is exploring a first time partnership through the International Volunteer Exchange Program [IVEP]; a yearlong work and service exchange opportunity for young adults aged 18-30. We are currently seeking a host family(s) interested in engaging and including a young adult in their home and family life. Host Families are an integral part of the program, serving as a bridge to the church and community and provide space for an IVEP participant to experience home and family life in a North American context. Host Families have opportunity to host for either half or full year, mid-August through Mid-July. A monthly stipend of $350 is offered to help offset the cost of hosting. Over 30 teachers and school counselors from over nine regional school districts recently gathered at Winding Hill to attend the session, Anxious Kids and Teens: How School Counselors and Teachers Can Make a Difference. Dr. Deedre Mitchell, associate professor of counseling, led the training session and participants had the opportunity to earn PA Act 48 credits. Special thanks to Beth Trott Clark, adjunct counseling instructor, for coordinating this event. Be on the lookout for additional continuing educational opportunities on timely topics.

Jocelyn Goranson, adjunct instructor of flute and music theory, performed a recital titled “Let the Earth Rejoice” on Jan. 18 during a guest artist visit to Penn State University, where she also taught a masterclass for the Department of Music. She performed the same program on Jan. 27 at St. John’s Hain’s United Church of Christ in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, as part of their Annie Gaul Concert Series. Jocelyn was joined by Baltimore-area clarinetist Dr. Fiona Knoll, and Messiah College graduate Douglas Beach on piano.

Dr. Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed a recital program of music by woman composers and arrangers with the Junction Saxophone Quartet at the 2019 U.S. Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium on Jan. 12. Also an invited lecturer, Todd presented a one hour talk titled “Fight, Flight or Freeze: Strategies for Coping with Performance Anxiety”. The 41st annual event was hosted by George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Shale Play: Poems and Photographs from the Fracking Fields

An exhibition in collaboration with the Department of English will take place Feb. 6- March 15 titled “Shale Play: Poems and Photographs from the Fracking Fields” by Julia Kasdorf and Steven Rubin. “Shale Play,” a singular work from an award-winning poet and a veteran documentary photographer, tracks the natural gas boom in the small towns, fields and forests of Appalachian Pennsylvania. In the era of the visual and verbal meme, Rubin and Kasdorf pair documentary poems with photographs in a volume that can be held in the human hand and shared, even in communities that lack high speed internet access. A passionate work of listening, looking and witness, “Shale Play” follows the documentarians of the 1930s but in color and contemporary poetics, and once again dares us to care.

ADDITIVE PROCESS: Art of Additive Manufacturing Taekyeom Lee

Taekyeom Lee is an interdisciplinary artist, although he prefers to introduce himself as a designer using artist’s material and artistic sensibility. It is already undeniable that we are facing a paradigm shift in many forms of art and design as the exciting and rapidly changing digital environment introduces new possibilities. Three-dimensional printing, in particular, has become more refined, common and accessible. As the extension of hands, these new technologies became new tools for pushing the boundaries of the ceramic medium, both regarding concept and materiality.
