Paper Tigers film to be shown February 17

The Messiah College Teacher Education Program and the Messiah College Education Association invite you to join us for a limited-engagement screening of Paper Tigers, a powerful documentary film about trauma-informed education. The film will be shown Feb. 17 from 7-9:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema. We will host a short time of discussion immediately following the film. Paper Tigers explores the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and toxic stress on struggling teens. The film follows a year in the life of Lincoln High Alternative School in Walla Walla, Washington. After radically changing its approach to disciplining students, Lincoln High School saw a dramatic turnaround in everything from the number of fights to test scores to graduation rates. The school has become a promising model of how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families through the practice of trauma-informed educational strategies and is a testament to what the latest research on childhood adversity is proving: that one caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

A sign-in sheet will be located in Old Main Room 206 on “Open Door” day. Please call the President’s Office if you have any questions.

Cindy will move from the day-to-day operations to work closely on investigations and training. Lynn will provide leadership for the day-to-day operations of the department. The impact of this split will, in most cases, not impact how the campus community works with the Department of Safety.

Campus notice: accreditation visit for graduate programs in nursing

The graduate programs in nursing at Messiah College will be undergoing an on-site evaluation April 4-6 by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the purposes of accreditation. CCNE accreditation is a nongovernmental peer review process that operates in accordance with nationally recognized standards established for the practice of accreditation in the United States. Accreditation by CCNE is intended to accomplish at least five general purposes:

  • To hold nursing programs accountable to the community of interest – the nursing profession, consumers, employers, higher education, students and their families, nurse residents – and to one another by ensuring that these programs have mission statements, goals and outcomes that are appropriate to prepare individuals to fulfill their expected roles.
  • To evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals and expected outcomes.
  • To assess the extent to which a nursing program meets accreditation standards.
  • To inform the public of the purposes and values of accreditation and to identify nursing programs that meet accreditation standards.
  • To foster continuing improvement in nursing programs – and, thereby in professional practice.

If you would like additional information about CCNE or its standards and procedures, you may visit their web site at www.aacn.nche.edu/accreditation.

A very important part of this evaluation is soliciting third-party comment on the nursing program by its communities of interest. I am writing to invite you to submit comments and opinions about the nursing program directly to the CCNE. All comments and opinions submitted to CCNE are held in strict confidence and shared with the on-site evaluation team. All comments must be written, signed and received by CCNE no later than March 14, 2016. Please send your comments directly to:

February wellness workshop

”Oh, my aching shoulder”—that phrase is becoming almost as common as ”What’s for supper?“ Last year, 4.5 million Americans visited their doctor with extreme shoulder pain. Of those, 250,000 had one or more of their rotator cuff muscles surgically repaired. For 53,000, repair was no longer an option, and they underwent complete shoulder replacement. Clearly, we are using and sometimes abusing our shoulder joints. That’s why our February workshop topic is “Caring for your shoulder – before and after it hurts.” Plan now to come and listen to Matt Lewis, Ph.D. in the Department of Health and Human Performance share his expertise on the shoulder. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in Parmer Cinema.

Safety Contest – Two months to go

Congratulations to Dwayne Magee, the winner of the Workplace Safety Committee’s safety contest question for January. He will receive a $50 gift card. The question for January was: During what week in 2016 will the annual fire extinguisher training be conducted on campus? The answer was found in the Workplace Safety Committee meeting minutes for January (which are available on the Safety Committee Channel on MCSquare.) The correct response was the week of Feb. 29. There are two months remaining for the contest. Each month, a question will be distributed to all employees via mass email. All correct answers for the month will go into a prize drawing; each month the prize is a $50 gift card. Watch your email on Monday, Feb. 8 for the next question!

Employees invited to submit nominations for Team Falcon Award

Employees are invited to submit nominations for the Team Falcon Award. The Team Falcon Award is an opportunity to recognize a group or team that collaborated successfully on a significant project or initiative to advance departmental or college-wide goals. We are opening up nominations to all employees this year. Eligible groups or teams include units, departments, task forces and committees or other cross-departmental work groups. The team may be comprised of part-time or full-time staff, administrative and/or faculty employees. Team members recognized must have had significant involvement in the accomplishment of the project, process or initiative. Generally, teams will consist of three to 10 individuals. One team will be recognized each year.

The Team Falcon Award is used to recognize a work group based on the following criteria:

  • The team made a significant contribution towards achievement of a strategic goal
  • The team exhibited innovation, creativity and excellence
  • The group fostered a team environment that promoted communication, trust, cooperation and respect for differences

Each member of the team recognized will receive a distinctive commemorative gift and the team will be hosted for lunch by the division vice president or provost. Any employee can nominate a deserving team. The recommendation must be submitted to the division vice president or provost by Monday, Feb. 29. The division vice president/provost is encouraged to solicit recommendations that cross functional boundaries. Each division vice president/provost will review all submissions for his/her division and select those teams that he/she feels best meet the criteria for the award. President’s Cabinet will vote to select the team to receive the award. Your recommendation will be confidential; only the employees selected as award recipients will know that their names were offered for consideration. Teams are not eligible to receive a subsequent award for three years. See the list of prior recipients at here. Nominations must be submitted using the Team Falcon Award nomination form found here. Further information on performance awards, can be viewed here. The recipients will be announced at the Employee Recognition Reception in May. Open enrollment for preschool 2016/2017

The Early Learning Center is pleased to announce our open enrollment for 2016/2017. We have both full-day and half-day programs available to the Messiah College community and the community at large. We continually strive to use developmentally appropriate goals for young children as well as children’s interests as a framework for planning the educational program and assessing children’s progress in all aspects of the social-emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical foundations necessary for later school success. The Early Learning Center utilizes the Project Approach as a key component of its curriculum. This inquiry-based approach allows children and teachers to engage in in-depth investigations of a topic or idea worth studying, resulting in the strengthening of academic skills and intellectual dispositions in an authentic manner. Children are viewed as capable, competent, curious and creative members of the classroom community.

Compliance communications

The Office of Human Resources and Compliance maintains an electronic archive that houses copies of any and all communications related to compliance that are distributed across campus. This includes, but is not limited to: notifications that are sent out annually for compliance purposes, notifications related to campus incidents, and communications sent out when onboarding new students or employees.

As you distribute compliance-related communications, please send an electronic copy to dfink@messiah.edu. If you are unsure as to whether or not something fits into the compliance communications category, please send it and HR will determine its relevance.

Safety recalls

WalMart has recalled Rival Griddles sold between July 2015 – December 2015. The heating element can crack and water can get inside, posing a shock hazard when the griddle is plugged into an electrical outlet. For more information including what to do if you have one, and for information about additional safety recalls, refer to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website at http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/

Who could use an extra $50?

It’s not too late to enter the safety contest for January. All entries must be received by Jan. 29 to be included in the prize drawing during the workplace safety committee meeting in February. Submit your answer to January’s question to dfink@messiah.edu or Donna Fink, Suite 3015.

A fantastic apartment is for rent in downtown Harrisburg and available to move in on Feb. 1 (or earlier if needed)! Please check it out and also share it with anyone who is looking for a great apartment, in a great location, at a great price. My wife, son and I have lived here for three years and loved it. (We are only moving now to get a back yard for our growing son.) We loved the character, the layout, the old style gate elevator, the balconies, the city and river views, and the location next to downtown restaurants, cafes, the YMCA, and other activities like a yoga studio, art galleries and river festivals. The landlord is great, there is ample street parking, and the neighborhood is completely safe. NEWS

Robin Collins, distinguished professor and chair of the philosophy department in the School of the Humanities has just been awarded a grant for his project, “The Fine-tuning for Scientific Discovery.” The project involves completing the work he has done in the last five years showing that the fundamental parameters of physics – such as the mass of the proton – fall within an extremely small range of values that are optimal for the development of technology and the discovering of the universe. He calls this the “fine-tuning for discoverability.” Such fine-tuning implies that the universe is providentially structured for beings like us to do science and thus has profound philosophical and theological implications. The $217,000 grant is over a three-year period, beginning June 2016. It provides release time to complete a technical book focused on cases of this fine-tuning in particle physics (since this area of physics provides the strongest support for his thesis), several substantial articles on non-particle physics cases, a popular book on the topic, substantial summer stipend support for Messiah College physicist Abaz Kryemadhi to help him with the physics, along with honorarium money for other experts to review the work.

Holiday safety tips

The Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) off the following tips to help prevent holiday home fires:

Christmas tree care

  1. Purchase flame retardant metallic or artificial trees.
  2. If you have a real tree, make sure that it has fresh, green needles that aren’t easily broken.  Keep live trees as moist as possible by giving them plenty of water.
  3. Use a sturdy tree stand designed not to tip over.
  4. Keep trees at least three feet away from heat sources, including fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.
  5. Make sure that any light strings or other decorations for the tree are in good condition and follow manufacturer’s instructions for their use.  Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords.
  6. Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.
  7. Safely dispose of trees as they become dry and needles begin to drop.
  8. Dispose of trees through recycling centers or community pick-up services.  Dried-out trees should not be left in a house or garage, or placed against the house or garage.
  9. This NFPA/UL video demonstrates the flammability of a dry Christmas tree versus a tree that has been watered regularly.

Holiday lights and decorations

  1. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  2. Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear.
  3. Some lights are designed specifically for indoor use and some for outdoor use; be sure you are using them correctly.
  4. Avoid overloading electrical outlets by not linking more than three light strands or a maximum of 50 lights for the screw-in bulbs.
  5. Use decorations that are flame-resistant or flame-retardant.
  6. Place decorations at least three feet away from fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.

Holiday candles

  1. Always extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed.  Do not leave a room before extinguishing candles.
  2. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree.
  3. Keep them at least three feet away from trees and holiday decorations, and other items that can catch fire like clothing, papers and curtains.
  4. Keep them out of the reach of children.

Early arrivals

If you are bringing back any students for a college related reason before Tuesday, Jan. 5, you will need to submit their name, date of return and reason for return to housing@messiah.edu.  Requests must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 18.

NEWS

From Kathy Hettinga, professor of art and design

It was a very good year for design awards for Messiah College!

  • Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor, students in the Design as Service course, received a design award for their work titled: “National Parks in the Chesapeake” created for the National Parks Conservation Association. Brianna and Matthew worked as a design team—designing, illustrating and overseeing production of the multiple panel/poster brochure for national organization NPCA.
  • Kathy T. Hettinga received a design award for her work titled “[Im]material, Exhibition Announcement” for the Aughinbaugh Gallery, created for Elizabeth Dubin, gallery director. Photography and artwork for the announcement and poster were created by Brenton Good, Kathy T. Hettinga and the Women’s Studio Workshop.
  • The Messiah College students’ and Professor Hettinga’s designs were selected for the 2015 American Graphic Design Awards out of 9,000 entries! The design work will be published in the 250 page Graphic Design: USA’s Design Annual, and on their popular website and digital annuals for desktop, tablet and smartphone. Students Brianna Jewell and Matthew Listor and Professor Hettinga’s design work will be seen alongside design work from Harvard and Yale University, SVA and Parsons, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Adobe, U.S. Olympic Committee and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Editor/publisher Gorden Kaye describes the winning entries as “exceptional.” The 52-year-old competition is presented by Graphic Design USA, the business-to-business magazine for creative professionals. The awards program honors, and encourages recognition of, the power of design to shape commerce, culture and communications.

Personnel changes in graduate programs

As Graduate Programs continues to grow, there are several personnel changes based on new program development, compliance and Messiah’s commitment to excellence. Stephanie Patterson has accepted the position of administrative assistant for occupational therapy, dietetic internship and graduate programs in business and leadership. She will be providing key support to these programs as they intentionally grow to extend the mission of Messiah College, meet the needs of students and seek appropriate accreditation, authorization, etc. Much of her time will be spent preparing the initial application for occupational therapy accreditation in preparation for our first cohort of students who we hope to enroll in the summer of 2017.

As we prepare for the first cohort of DNP students (fall 2016), Ashley Ringquist’s responsibilities have been adjusted to account for this new program. Ashley will now be serving as the administrative assistant to the director of graduate program in nursing and clinical coordinator for the graduate program in nursing. This is an essential role that will ensure that we have quality clinical experiences for our DNP and MSN students and that we are in compliance with various state boards of nursing.

As financial modeling and fiscal management are essential to our graduate programming efforts, we welcome Rebekah Ostby to Messiah College to serve as the graduate programs coordinator. Rebekah is a graduate of Eastern University having earned an undergraduate degree in business management, and she will complete an MBA from Eastern University (August 2016). Most recently, she served as the assistant director of student services/site director of Eastern University, Harrisburg Campus. In her role at Messiah College, she will be responsible for financial modeling, budget preparation, budget monitoring and administrative support projects to support all of our graduate programs.

Dr. Julie Gomboc-Turyan will continue to serve as the assistant director of graduate and nontraditional curriculum, and this restructuring will provide her with dedicated time to address new program/curriculum development, assessment/improvement of current programs and state authorization compliance.

Finally, Dr. Kris Cravey, assistant professor of business, has accepted the appointment of program director of graduate programs in business and leadership. This appointment will be effective January 2016. Kris will continue to serve as a graduate-level faculty member and will be filling the role that was vacated by Rob Pepper, who was recently appointed assistant provost for graduate and nontraditional programs.

EMPOWER wellness program beginning in January

One of the most successful wellness programs we’ve offered in the past is back! EMPOWER is an on-site weight management program that enables participants to move forward in meeting personal goals, provides helpful knowledge in the areas of physical activity and nutrition and creates a community of support. Through eight weekly meetings, utilizing interactive engagement with a senior health coach and individual sharing, participants are guided into a lifetime of weight management success. Our goal is to run a program at Messiah on Mondays from noon-1 p.m. beginning Jan. 11 and ending Feb. 29.

At least 15 employees must register for us to be able to offer this program so find a friend and sign up today. If you are not able to attend at least six of the eight sessions, we ask you not to register for the program. Employees can register simply by emailing Doug Miller at dmiller@messiah.edu. Deadline for registrations is Dec. 23. It is open to employees and spouses. You do not need to be insured by Capital Blue Cross to participate.

Here’s what Messiah employees who participated in this program in the past had to say about it:

The program is uplifting. Learning you can eat healthy without going to the extreme was encouraging.”

Empower was the most effective program I have ever been involved with, I’m still using what I learned two years later! In terms of exercise and weight management it’s the best investment in time you can make.”

“One of the most beneficial aspects of Empower was that I left the class armed with resources to help me to continue to work toward my health goals.”

“This is more than just a class, it is a life-learning experience. We were empowered not only with the basics of nutrition and exercise, but more importantly we were given the gift of encouragement.”

“I have signed up for the Empower class twice and loved it! It was great motivation to stay on track. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in leading a healthier lifestyle!”

“If you need encouragement on eating healthier, finding time for exercise and just all around feeling better, go to EMPOWER. It is well worth it!”

Starter spider plants available for your home or office

Spider plants help to improve indoor air quality and are very easy to take care of. I have several starter plants or “spiderettes” available for free. Solid green leaves or green and white striped leaves. Contact Carrie Barlup at cbarlup@messiah.edu if you’d like a plant or two or more! They make great gifts for the holidays.

Still needed: a few good elves

Each year, in the spirit of the season, employees volunteer to help us at the employee Christmas luncheon. This allows our colleagues in dining services and campus events to more fully participate in the event. If you haven’t participated before, or if you’ve had a great time volunteering in the past, we need you this year…and it’s fun!

We are still in need of a few people to help us clean up after the event, particularly to box up donations. The members of the HR team would really appreciate your help! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Victoria Johnson, human resources, at VJohnson@messiah.edu by Monday, Dec. 14.

President’s Report, new Bridge site

Last year, Messiah’s editorial team redesigned The Bridge, the College’s quarterly alumni magazine. As the second phase of this redesign, The Bridge now launches its new website, messiah.edu/the_bridge, in conjunction with its President’s Report issue. The revamped website will make it easier to enjoy the magazine in its entirety online and to share articles with friends.  In this issue, look for the year-in-review timeline, the financial report and profiles of outstanding alums.

Prefer a hard copy of the President’s Report issue of The Bridge? Printed copies are available in the lounges of Eisenhower and Boyer. As always, additional quantities can be found on the third floor of Old Main in the reception area.

As a reader, what do you think of the redesigned magazine and website? Go to messiah.edu/bridgesurvey to take a quick readership survey. Survey participants will be entered to win one of five $50 gift cards to The Campus Store, which can be used on campus or online. The deadline is Jan. 15.
