We are delighted to announce Paula Holtzinger as the new director of the Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement, effective Jan. 3. Paula’s various experiences in service learning, global study, work and service, as well as community partner relations wonderfully reflect the mission of the Agape Center. Paula is a proud graduate of Messiah’s Peace and Conflict Studies program. The transformative experiences she had as a student leader with the Agape Center influenced her decision to pursue international work through the English Language Institute where she facilitated experiential learning opportunities and taught English in Vietnam, Lebanon, Hong Kong and Cambodia. Paula also served as an emergency response assistant for Lebanon and Syria with Mennonite Central Committee in Beirut. From there, Paula joined Journey’s End Refugee Settlement Services as the employment training program manager in Buffalo, NY. Most recently, Paula has served as the administrative assistant to the Agape Center team while completing her graduate work in restorative justice, trauma and resilience in educational environments. Julie Fenton, director of student engagement, has decided to step down from her position to stay home with her daughter, Hallie. Julie’s last day at Messiah will be Jan. 18. Julie has done a wonderful job leading the department through many transitions over the last four and a half years. In her eight years working at Messiah, we know that she has made an impact on a multitude of students and many employees as well. We are so grateful for her expertise in such a wide range of areas from navigating contracts to leading student club advisors to mentoring students through difficult times. Julie will be greatly missed!

Church Choir Festival

You are invited to sing in Messiah University’s second annual Church Choir Festival 2024! Last year was a beautiful success with great music and learning for all participants. This year’s festival will take place on February 4 in beautiful Parmer Hall at the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and the Performing Arts. This one-afternoon festival will provide area church choirs with the chance to fellowship together by learning and performing diverse anthems of the Christian faith in a large festival choir conducted by Messiah University music professors and alongside Messiah University’s 48-voice Concert Choir. In addition to choral clinics and performance, the afternoon will also include lifelong-learning classes for singers and directors. Associate Professor of Marketing Keith Quesenberry had an article published in Entrepreneur Online titled, “Want to Improve Your Brand’s Storytelling? Shift Your POV to Tell a Better Narrative. Here’s How.” It shares insights from his research into brand storytelling and from his textbook Brand Storytelling: Integrated Marketing Communications for the Digital Media Landscape which was published early in the year.

Also, Quesenberry’s Brand Storytelling textbook received a very favorable review in the Journal of Advertising Education by professors at Iowa State University, saying “Brand Storytelling is the first textbook to provide a full-course foundation on the psychology, philosophy, and practice of story-based marketing communication. The textbook targets advertising, public relations, and marketing students with an integrated marketing communications (IMC) framework. Brand Storytelling provides a deep dive into the research and theory behind the use of stories for commercial communications, as well as examples of story use on digital and legacy-media platforms.”

Todd Goranson, professor of music, performed as baritone saxophonist with The Four Tops and The Temptations for sold-out audience in Keswick Theater (Philadelphia) on December 3rd and the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 5. Todd was featured as the soloist on classic Motown hits such as “I Got a Feeling” and “Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)”. Both The Temptations and The Four Tops have received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards and have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Brandon Hoover, director of sustainability, is departing from Messiah University on Jan. 5 to take on a new role with the Appalachian Mountain Club as their new director of sustainability. Brandon has led a team of people at Messiah through many sustainability efforts that helped the University and students achieve numerous regional, state and national awards. Messiah has enhanced the University’s climate response along with developing strong resource recovery efforts during student move-out, the demolition of Hoffman, and the Engle Center renovations along with a robust compost operation. Since joining Messiah in 2015, Brandon’s unique role had him recruiting, teaching, advising and researching alongside sustainability studies majors and colleagues.

Debbie Chopka served as a cherished member of the Department of Human Development and Family Science team for 14 years. The faculty will miss her energetic approach to her work, her care for our students, her practice of exceeding expectations, her collegiality, her knowledge of our operations, her practice of anticipating our needs, her ability to manage our many departmental events, and her thoughtful contributions to our departmental problem-solving. While we will miss Debbie within our department, we are happy that she is only moving down the hall.

After 16 years of dedicated service, Sarah Crone, Biological Sciences lab coordinator, is departing from Messiah University on Dec. 20. Sarah has been our champion for lab safety, preparation, management and training during these years. Her dedication to the department faculty has been deeply appreciated and she will be greatly missed as a long-term member of our community. We celebrate her future opportunity with Best Veterinary Solutions, Inc. (BVS), an animal agriculture company (poultry and swine) based out of Mechanicsburg.

Clinical Group Exercise Class for Parkinson’s Disease

Christmas card for my mom. Some of you may know me, most probably not. But with the Christmas season approaching fast, I wanted to do something special for my mom. My mom is 89 years old, and has dementia, about 2 months ago we had to put her into a nursing home. She wants to go to “her” home, but for her own safety it was a decision my brothers and I had to make. Mom loves getting cards, and I thought it would be nice that she gets some “extra” Christmas cards, she loves looking at them for hours on end. It would make her so happy, if you have the time, to send her a Christmas card and make her very happy for the Christmas holiday.

Joanna Behm, EdD, OTR/L, assistant professor of occupational therapy, led a technology roundtable at the 2023 AOTA Education Summit in Denver, Colorado this month. She discussed the multiscene unfolding case study simulation involving interdisciplinary health care students and faculty at the graduate and undergraduate levels that Messiah’s IPE Committee organizes every summer and how the event addresses collaboration, communication and role appreciation across health care disciplines.

Abaz Kryemadhi, professor of physics, and Will Griffith, senior physics student, in collaboration with colleagues from several other universities, have co-authored an article titled, “Hunt for Magnetic Signatures of Hidden-Photon and Axion Dark Matter in the Wilderness,” published in Phys. Rev. D 108, 096026. The publication has received recognition by the editors of this American Physical Society journal, and is listed in highlighted papers (https://journals.aps.org/prd/highlights). Also, the research has been featured in Nature. (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03749-1).

Damian Savarino, bass, professor of music, recently made his debut with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of William Wright, Savarino sang the bass solos in Handel’s MESSIAH to three sold out audiences the first weekend of December.

The Susquehanna Chorale will present its Candlelight Christmas concert series on Dec. 15-17, under the direction of Linda L. Tedford.

The series begins on Friday, Dec. 15 at the Calvin and Janet High Center for Performing Arts, , 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 16 at Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College, 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 17, at Market Square Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, 4 p.m.

This year’s Candlelight Christmas concerts will include classics interwoven with new and creative settings of familiar texts. From timeless sacred works to contemporary arrangements of familiar tunes and beloved carols with our audience members—this is Christmas with the Susquehanna Chorale. This year features Pachelbel’s Magnificat, Gloria by Randol Alan Bass, the music of Bob Chilcott, John Rutter, Mack Wilberg, and Stephen Paulus, as well as delightful settings of traditional carols including Jingle Bells.

A pre-concert recital by Susquehanna Chorale accompanist, Daniel L. Dorty will be presented 15 minutes prior to each performance.

She is well-loved by her colleagues and students. Charlene invested in countless students and embodied the qualities of a holistic educator. Carol Buckley is retiring from Messiah University at the end of the Fall 2023 semester. Carol began at teaching at Messiah in 2013. During her ten and a half years at Messiah, Carol has not only served as associate professor, but has also held the role of peer evaluator for three terms, COE Senate (2 terms), the Oakes Museum committee, teacher education Committee, commissioning service committee and support for co-teaching training workshops. She is especially honored to have been the MCEA/EAMU faculty advisor since 2014. Carol has worked diligently to encourage a love for math not only in Messiah’s teacher education graduates, but also in the community. She will be dearly missed.

Erik Lindquist, biological sciences department chair and distinguished professor, has coauthored a comprehensive study in Communications Earth and Environment, a Nature journal (nature.com). This work began in 2019 through Lindquist’s co-founding leadership in Project Golden Frog (ranadorada.org), and as part of an 89-institution collaboration through the Atelopus Survival Initiative (atelopus.org). The article, “Ongoing Harlequin Toad Declines Suggest the Amphibian Extinction Crisis Is Still an Emergency,” drew from Lindquist’s experience and data collected while living and working in Panama, Costa Rica, and Colombia over the past 29 years. Raeann Hamon (distinguished professor of family science and gerontology), Lauren Garcia (HDFS ’25), and Abbey Welsh (HDFS ’24) recently attended the National Council on Family Relations Conference in Orlando, Florida. Raeann and Lauren (Hamon’s Smith Scholar Intern) co-presented a resource exchange entitled “Learning from their elders: Implementing an intergenerational life lessons project in the family science classroom.” As Chair of the International Section and as a member of the 2023 NCFR conference planning committee, Raeann was responsible for organizing part of the program and served as facilitator for two special sessions. In addition, Raeann was awarded the Advancing Family Science Legacy Award. The Legacy Award recognizes members who make significant and lasting contributions to the field of Family Science through their teaching and scholarship of teaching/administration and/or advancement of the discipline of family science. Finally, on November 11, Raeann was invited to present a paper on Intergenerational Relationships in North America at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Division for Inclusive Social Development’s and NCFR’s Regional Expert Group Meeting for North America in Orlando. The by-invitation-only group of 13 met as part of Megatrends & Families: Focus on Demographic Change, Migration and Urbanization in North America, in preparation for the 30th anniversary of the International Year of Family 2024.

Susquehanna Chorale to Present Youth Choral Festival

The critically acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale and three of its educational choirs will present the annual Youth Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 4 p.m. at the High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The public is invited to attend.

This inspiring intergenerational event kicks off the Susquehanna Chorale’s concert season, featuring Susquehanna Children’s, Youth, and Young Women’s Chorales, and the Susquehanna Chorale. LOOKING FOR A DOG/HOUSE SITTER. I am looking for a house/dog sitter to watch two adorable dachshunds in a comfortable home. Hershey and Coco are rescue dogs and cannot be kenneled. Messiah represented well at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine held in Lancaster, PA on Nov. 3-4. The meeting attracted over 700 clinical and scientific professionals from PA, NY, NJ, MD, DE, WV and DC. Mindy Smith, Matt Lewis, Kris Hansen-Kieffer, Kevin Ogden, Scott Kieffer and Eric Rawson accompanied 20+ students to the event.

Professor Scott Kieffer delivered the Saturday Keynote/Past President’s Lecture entitled, “Caffeine and Performance: Unraveling “a few” of the Genetic and Inter-individual Differences”.

A poster entitled, “The effects of Core-preconditioning Exercises on Vertical Jump and Dynamic Balance” was presented by Anthony Russo, a DPT graduate student, and undergraduate Applied Health students Grace Hejeebu and Elijah Eade. This study was a collaborative project between UG/GRAD to explore interprofessional experiences. The faculty mentors were Scott Kieffer, Michael Lehr and Borko Rodic.

The University of Maryland recently named Nance McCown (Department of Communication) as one of its 2023 “COMM Achiever” alumni for outstanding achievements in career, public service, and/or volunteer activities that promote UMD’s COMM Department’s mission of “Communication for the Public Good.” Nance completed her Ph.D. in public relations research at UMD in 2008. This year’s honorees were celebrated at a dinner held Oct. 12.

Susquehanna Chorale to Present Youth Choral Festival

Call for Nominations

All educators at Messiah University are invited to nominate candidates for the
Class of 1964 Wittlinger Prize and the Boyer Legacy Award.

These two awards are presented annually by the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist and Wesleyan Studies and the Ernest L. Boyer Center, respectively, to recognize student leaders who embody particular ideals. The Wittlinger Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger’s (Class of 1935) qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication. Similarly, the Boyer Legacy Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Ernest L. Boyer’s (Class of 1948) ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.

Eligible candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity and a commitment to service. There is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.

Nominations should include the student’s name and a brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining why the student merits the honor. Students may be nominated for either or both awards.

Both awards carry a cash prize of $1,500 each.

The Wittlinger Award recipient will be recognized during the 2024 Wittlinger Chapel Series; the Boyer Award recipient will be recognized at the Fall 2024 Teacher Education/Boyer Center Awards Ceremony.

To upgrade to Microsoft 365, follow these steps:
1. Close all Microsoft programs including Outlook
2. Open Software Center from your Desktop or search for Software Center under the Start Menu
3. Find Microsoft 365 64-bit
4. Click Install (plan on 10-15 minutes for this process)
5. After installation is complete, navigate to Software Center again
6. Click Office 365 Taskbar & Start Menu Fix (this will remove those 2016 icons)

Student honors presentation – Kelan Amme

Please join us on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. in Boyer 231, as history major Kelan Amme delivers an honors presentation on “Visualizing the Myth and Folklore of the United State Colored Troops: How Written Accounts Shape the Way the USCT were Perceived during the United States Civil War.” Using primary sources created during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, Kelan looks to display patterns of social change through mapping visualization technology and historical research, specifically pertaining to the public opinion of the United States Colored Troops in the Civil War South. Written accounts, both formal and informal, are influential for studying how the past is remembered and memorialized. There will be refreshments.

International Friendsgiving

Church World Service Harrisburg helps refugees resettle, form long-lasting relationships in the community, and maintain their own basic needs in a sustainable lifestyle. One of CWS Harrisburg’s highlight events is their International Friendsgiving feast, the proceeds of which directly support their clients’ urgent needs including advanced medical care and accessible housing.

This year, we are excited to host our own International Friendsgiving feast on campus to help support our friends at CWS! The Agape Center, SGA, Social Work Club, Caribbean Student Association, HRA, and Peace Fellowship are excited to collaborate together to invite students to the International Friendsgiving feast on Nov. 12, from 6 – 8 p.m. in Martin Commons.
Students and staff are invited to attend as we share a meal featuring foods from Ukraine, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria! We will see the stories behind each recipe that comes from current and former CWS Clients, and even hear some staff and clients share their own stories. Professor David Foster was recently featured on NPR Radio in Wisconsin for his collaborative work with the Forest County Potawatomi Culture Center on a workshop identifying medical and edible plants. He and student Tyler Jahraus (’24) teamed up with traditional ecological knowledge coordinator Richard Gouge to identify 77 species with native Potawatomi names. Foster hopes to continue his studies with Gouge with the outcome of preserving tribal linguistic and botanical knowledge for generations to come. On October 24, Nance McCown (Department of Communication) presented “Protecting Your Organization through Listening and Engagement” at the Human Resource Professionals of Central PA annual conference in Harrisburg. Focusing on her research as well as latest industry trends, Nance’s presentation allowed participants to learn about factors and best practices leading to high employee engagement and effective, ethical organizational listening; they then had the opportunity to apply their new knowledge through roundtable discussions and brainstorming.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own an orchard? A pretty easy job, right? Yes, you must prune your trees, and mow occasionally throughout the spring and summer. But between these necessary jobs, there is plenty of down time to relax by the pool and watch the fruit grow. Fall is a bit busier; the apples must be picked. But blessed winter! During those long, cold, and dark months, there is ample time to nap and read books.

If any of this was true, there would be more farmers in the world! Farming is a labor intensive, year-around, relentless profession. Join us on November 8 to discover what it takes to run Mt. Airy Orchards, located just minutes from the Messiah Campus. Mt. Airy grows and sells multiple varieties of berries, peaches, plums, and apples. They also successfully operate a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA), an Agritourism business including summer programs for children, a play area with a fall corn maze, pick your own fruit, homemade baked goods, a retail store, ice cream and homemade meals, local artisan’s talents, and the list continues! We will walk through a typical year and the challenges each season offers. As a bonus, Mt. Airy grows over 20 different varieties of apples, several of which will be available for sampling! New admissions counselors

The Office of Admissions is excited to welcome two new staff members to our team.

John Truitt ’21, admissions counselor/coordinator of youth ministry and parachurch organizations: John is a 2021 Messiah University graduate with a degree in early childhood education. He is currently in progress of earning his MBA in organizational management from Eastern University.

During his time at Messiah, John spent three years working as a student in the undergraduate admissions office that included time both as an office worker and as a telecounselor. Most recently, he served the last two years at Eastern University as a senior admissions counselor and is thrilled to bring those skills back to his alma mater.

Tania Tirado Colon, admissions counselor for Latino student recruitment: Tania comes to us as a native of Puerto Rico who moved her family to Pennsylvania in 2020. She holds a B.A. music education and an M.A. educational leadership. Her wealth of experience as an educator and life-coach, as well as a passion for serving the Latino community, make her a perfect fit for our team.

Call for Nominations

All educators at Messiah University are invited to nominate candidates for the
Class of 1964 Wittlinger Prize and the Boyer Legacy Award.

These two awards are presented annually by the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies and the Ernest L. Boyer Center, respectively, to recognize student leaders who embody particular ideals. The Wittlinger Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger’s (Class of 1935) qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication. Similarly, the Boyer Legacy Award honors students who demonstrate Dr. Ernest L. Boyer’s (Class of 1948) ardent emphasis that leadership is grounded in service.

Eligible candidates must be juniors with the highest academic promise, including a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong character, integrity, and a commitment to service. There is no restriction as to the major of the recipient.

Nominations should include the student’s name and a brief statement (no more than 200 words) explaining why the student merits the honor. Students may be nominated for either or both awards.

Both awards carry a cash prize of $1,500 each.

2023 Annual American Democracy Lecture

Join the History, Politics, and International Relations Department for the 2023 Annual American Democracy Lecture. Featured speaker Keisha Blain, Ph.D., is professor of Africana studies and history at Brown University. She is a nationally respected scholar, historian, and human rights advocate. A regular columnist for MSNBC, she has written about education, housing discrimination, Juneteenth, and the importance of recent movies, “Till” (2022) and “The Woman King” (2022).

Blain is the author of several books including, “Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom” and “Until I am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer’s Enduring Message to America.” She served as president of the African American Intellectual History Society from 2017 to 2021 and has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including serving as a Guggenheim Fellow (2022) and a Carnegie Fellow (2022).

In today’s demanding professional landscape, employees juggle numerous roles and responsibilities, often contending with immense pressure that can lead to stress and potential burnout. Literature suggests that to reduce the risk of professional burnout and promote increased satisfaction with work-life balance, we must first increase awareness on what burnout is and reflect on proactive methods to manage job-related stressors. This session focuses on increasing awareness of burnout, its signs and symptoms, and proactive stress management at both individual and organizational levels. Participants will explore relevant literature, engage in practical activities, and formulate concrete goals and action plans, empowering them to reflect on strategies to build a sustainable career.

United Way Campaign 2023

On Oct. 10, we all received an email from President Phipps encouraging us to give towards this year’s United Way Campaign.

As a reminder the campaign will be from Oct. 23- Nov. 10. All employees will receive an email on Oct. 23 from ecommunity@uwcr.org. There will be a link contained in the email that will allow you to donate electronically.

Are you a first-generation college grad?

On Nov. 8, we will be celebrating first-generation students on campus. If you are a first-generation college grad (neither of your parents completed a baccalaureate degree in the US), we’d love to tell your story!

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

We’re talking about phishing over at the Cybersecurity Education program blog this week. Phishing occurs when a criminal poses as a trustworthy organization or person and tries to trick you into clicking a link or opening an attachment. They do this in order to steal your personal information or infect your device.
