After three years of strong work and service as the Collaboratory Program Manager, Rodney Green has accepted a position with World Relief and will be leaving employment with Messiah College on Sept. 9. The scope and impact of Collaboratory programming has grown significantly during Rodney’s tenure, and he has managed that growth while keeping Collaboratory leadership focused on its mission and quality. Rodney will be missed. His team is grateful that he will continue to work in the Harrisburg area.

Timothy Swartz ’15, Ellie Stuart ’15, and biology professors David Foster and Erik Lindquist have published their research article “Testing Rapid-Assessment Models for the Conservation of Woodland Vernal Pools in South-central Pennsylvania” in the scientific journal, the Northeastern Naturalist. This work represents two years of dedicated data gathering, analysis and manuscript writing effort. Swartz is currently working on his Master of Science degree in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois. Stuart is a working in the 4-H, Master Gardener, and Horticulture programs at the Pennsylvania State University Agricultural Extension.

David Foster, professor of biology and environmental science, was elected to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees for AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies. Au Sable Institute inspires and educates people to serve, protect, and restore God’s earth. It is based in Michigan with courses in Washington and India; serving students from 60 colleges around North America.

Katie Todd ’13 and biology professor Erik Lindquist have published their research article “Mass Flowering Crops as a Conservation Resource for Wild Pollinators (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)” in the scientific journal, the Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society. This article is the outcome of a study on the Cemetery Hill sunflower crop and the Back 40 field at Messiah College. Todd is now a graduate research fellow in entomology at the Ohio State University.

Congratulations to Raeann Hamon, professor of family science and gerontology, for being selected to receive the highly competitive 2016 Felix Berardo Mentoring Award from the National Council on Family Relations. A committee of distinguished family professionals selected Hamon to receive this award for her outstanding leadership and excellence in mentoring. Hamon was nominated for this national recognition by Erin Boyd-Soisson and four of her former students. Dr. Khaw from Montclair University and Committee Chair noted that “The Berardo Award Committee was particularly struck by the way Hamon’s nominators described her as an inspiring and visionary leader, mentor, and teacher who is fully committed to advancing students’ careers and maximizing their potentials (and who tirelessly finds ways to pave opportunities for them to do so). We were equally impressed by her roles as a fierce advocate of the family science field through her dedication to Family Life Education and her initiative which led to the establishment of the NCFR Honors Recognition Program.”

Wanda Thuma-McDermond, PhD, RN presented on July 24 at the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Research Conference in Capetown, South Africa on aspects of her thesis entitled: “Mweende Kabotu; Going with Cultural Humility for International Nursing Student Experiences.” Almost concurrently, at a more prestigious venue up the coast in Durban, South Africa, Messiah alumnus Dr. Phil Thuma was at the WHO 21st International AIDS conference, as presenting author for the Macha Research Trust on: “LYNX P24 Antigen Point of Care Test can Improve Infant HIV Diagnosis in Rural Zambia.”
