Join seniors in “Baker’s Last Run” event

Late night runs with friends to Baker’s Diner is a nostalgic tradition Messiah students have enjoyed through the years. To give seniors that final visit with classmates before walking across the platform on Commencement, the Senior Class Gift Committee is holding an all-day event on Monday, May 9 and you’re invited! Upcoming April Wellness Workshop

Last year, 4.5 million Americans visited their doctor with extreme shoulder pain. Of those, 250,000 had one or more of their rotator cuff muscles surgically repaired. For 53,000, repair was no longer an option, and they underwent complete shoulder replacement. Clearly, we are using and sometimes abusing our shoulder joints. That’s why our next wellness workshop topic is “Caring for your shoulder – before and after it hurts.” It’s one of the most timely health topics of our day. Plan now to come and listen to Matt Lewis, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, share his expertise on the shoulder joint. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 6 from 4: -4:45 p.m. in Parmer Cinema

Making changes to academic department websites

If you are responsible for making edits and updates to academic department websites, we would like to remind you that a comprehensive set of instructions can be found at messiah.edu/academic-web. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact Danielle Ran or Kris Hardy in the Office of Marketing and Communications.

Expanded service awards gift program

The gift program for those reaching significant service milestones has been expanded this year! Human Resources and Compliance is now working with Terryberry, a highly regarded employee recognition and rewards company, to provide a much wider gift selection. The Campus Store, Mountz, L.L. Bean and Vera Bradley are still represented on various milestone level lists as Terryberry has graciously allowed us to include several program favorites. Along with increasing the gift options, the new program will offer streamlined processing. We look forward to feedback from those employees receiving service awards gifts this year.

2015-16 performance appraisal schedule

Performance appraisals for all administrative and staff employees, with the exception of employees in operations, are due once again on June 15. If an employee is leaving campus prior to June 15, the performance appraisal is due before they depart. Operations will continue to review their employees during the month of their hiring anniversary. Customized appraisal forms have been established to better support the environment and requirements of different areas of the college. Other areas of the College will use the standard appraisal forms found in the forms section of the Human Resources and Compliance website. If you have any questions regarding the review process, please contact Kathy Castonguay.

Open enrollment for preschool 2016/2017

The Early Learning Center is pleased to announce our open enrollment for 2016/2017. We have full-day and half-day programs available to the Messiah College community and the community at large. We continually strive to use developmentally appropriate goals for young children as well as children’s interests as a framework for planning the educational program and assessing children’s progress in all aspects of the social-emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical foundations necessary for later school success.

The Early Learning Center utilizes the Project Approach as a key component of its curriculum. This inquiry based approach allows children and teachers to engage in in-depth investigations of a topic or idea worth studying, resulting in the strengthening of academic skills and intellectual dispositions in an authentic manner. Children are viewed as capable, competent, curious and creative members of the classroom community. Interested parties please call the administrative assistant at 717-796-5043 or email earlylearningcenter@messiah.edu for further questions or to schedule a tour of the center. You can also visit messiah.edu/elc and complete an online enrollment form.

NEWS:

In 2014, the Class of 1964 reunion planning committee created a new student award in recognition of Dr. Carlton O. Wittlinger, their class advisor, as part of their 50th Class Reunion celebration. A graduate of Messiah Junior College in 1935, Dr. Wittlinger returned to Messiah and served over 35 years as a teacher and visionary administrator. We are pleased to announce the inaugural Class of 1964 Wittlinger Award has been awarded to Dayren Soto, a junior education major. The award seeks to honor students who demonstrate Dr. Wittlinger’s broad academic accomplishments, including his qualities of persistence and unselfish dedication, as they pursue and develop their own academic leadership skills. The selection committee was deeply impressed by Dayren’s commitment to service and reconciliation. She clearly demonstrates similar traits that led to Dr. Wittlinger having such a profound impact on Messiah College. We are grateful to the Class of 1964 reunion planning committee for their vision to establish this new fund. The committee was comprised of Darrel Bigham, P. Allen Sollenberger and Marilyn Heisey Byer. We also recognize and thank Melinda Burchard for nominating Dayren. Paper Tigers film to be shown February 17

The Messiah College Teacher Education Program and the Messiah College Education Association invite you to join us for a limited-engagement screening of Paper Tigers, a powerful documentary film about trauma-informed education. The film will be shown Feb. 17 from 7-9:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema. We will host a short time of discussion immediately following the film. Paper Tigers explores the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and toxic stress on struggling teens. The film follows a year in the life of Lincoln High Alternative School in Walla Walla, Washington. After radically changing its approach to disciplining students, Lincoln High School saw a dramatic turnaround in everything from the number of fights to test scores to graduation rates. The school has become a promising model of how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families through the practice of trauma-informed educational strategies and is a testament to what the latest research on childhood adversity is proving: that one caring adult can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Changes in the Department of Safety

As the responsibilities of the Department of Safety continue to increase with regulations around Title IX, VAWA and Clery and with the college receiving a grant from the Department of Justice, the leadership responsibilities have shifted. Cindy Burger will become the director of investigations, compliance and training and Lynn Maynard has been promoted to director of safety and administrative services. Cindy will move from the day-to-day operations to work closely on investigations and training. Lynn will provide leadership for the day-to-day operations of the department. The impact of this split will, in most cases, not impact how the campus community works with the Department of Safety.

Campus notice: accreditation visit for graduate programs in nursing

The graduate programs in nursing at Messiah College will be undergoing an on-site evaluation April 4-6 by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the purposes of accreditation. CCNE accreditation is a nongovernmental peer review process that operates in accordance with nationally recognized standards established for the practice of accreditation in the United States. Accreditation by CCNE is intended to accomplish at least five general purposes:

  • To hold nursing programs accountable to the community of interest – the nursing profession, consumers, employers, higher education, students and their families, nurse residents – and to one another by ensuring that these programs have mission statements, goals and outcomes that are appropriate to prepare individuals to fulfill their expected roles.
  • To evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals and expected outcomes.
  • To assess the extent to which a nursing program meets accreditation standards.
  • To inform the public of the purposes and values of accreditation and to identify nursing programs that meet accreditation standards.
  • To foster continuing improvement in nursing programs – and, thereby in professional practice.

If you would like additional information about CCNE or its standards and procedures, you may visit their web site at www.aacn.nche.edu/accreditation.

A very important part of this evaluation is soliciting third-party comment on the nursing program by its communities of interest. I am writing to invite you to submit comments and opinions about the nursing program directly to the CCNE. All comments and opinions submitted to CCNE are held in strict confidence and shared with the on-site evaluation team. All comments must be written, signed and received by CCNE no later than March 14, 2016. Please send your comments directly to:

February wellness workshop

”Oh, my aching shoulder”—that phrase is becoming almost as common as ”What’s for supper?“ Last year, 4.5 million Americans visited their doctor with extreme shoulder pain. Of those, 250,000 had one or more of their rotator cuff muscles surgically repaired. For 53,000, repair was no longer an option, and they underwent complete shoulder replacement. Clearly, we are using and sometimes abusing our shoulder joints. That’s why our February workshop topic is “Caring for your shoulder – before and after it hurts.” Plan now to come and listen to Matt Lewis, Ph.D. in the Department of Health and Human Performance share his expertise on the shoulder. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. in Parmer Cinema.

Safety Contest – Two months to go

Congratulations to Dwayne Magee, the winner of the Workplace Safety Committee’s safety contest question for January. He will receive a $50 gift card. The question for January was: During what week in 2016 will the annual fire extinguisher training be conducted on campus? The answer was found in the Workplace Safety Committee meeting minutes for January (which are available on the Safety Committee Channel on MCSquare.) The correct response was the week of Feb. 29. There are two months remaining for the contest. Each month, a question will be distributed to all employees via mass email. All correct answers for the month will go into a prize drawing; each month the prize is a $50 gift card. Watch your email on Monday, Feb. 8 for the next question!

Employees invited to submit nominations for Team Falcon Award

Employees are invited to submit nominations for the Team Falcon Award. The Team Falcon Award is an opportunity to recognize a group or team that collaborated successfully on a significant project or initiative to advance departmental or college-wide goals. We are opening up nominations to all employees this year. Eligible groups or teams include units, departments, task forces and committees or other cross-departmental work groups. The team may be comprised of part-time or full-time staff, administrative and/or faculty employees. Team members recognized must have had significant involvement in the accomplishment of the project, process or initiative. Generally, teams will consist of three to 10 individuals. One team will be recognized each year.

The Team Falcon Award is used to recognize a work group based on the following criteria:

  • The team made a significant contribution towards achievement of a strategic goal
  • The team exhibited innovation, creativity and excellence
  • The group fostered a team environment that promoted communication, trust, cooperation and respect for differences

Each member of the team recognized will receive a distinctive commemorative gift and the team will be hosted for lunch by the division vice president or provost. Any employee can nominate a deserving team. The recommendation must be submitted to the division vice president or provost by Monday, Feb. 29. The division vice president/provost is encouraged to solicit recommendations that cross functional boundaries. Each division vice president/provost will review all submissions for his/her division and select those teams that he/she feels best meet the criteria for the award. President’s Cabinet will vote to select the team to receive the award. Your recommendation will be confidential; only the employees selected as award recipients will know that their names were offered for consideration. Teams are not eligible to receive a subsequent award for three years. See the list of prior recipients at here. Nominations must be submitted using the Team Falcon Award nomination form found here. Further information on performance awards, can be viewed here. The recipients will be announced at the Employee Recognition Reception in May.
