For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Todd Goranson, professor of saxophone and bassoon, gave an invited presentation titled “No Pain, More Gain: Stretches and Warm-Up Essentials for Saxophonists” at the 44th annual US Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium at George Mason University on January 12. The participatory presentation included warm-ups, stretches, and strengthening techniques that can be used daily by woodwind instrumentalists to promote musculoskeletal health of the back, shoulders, neck, arms, and hands.

Todd also performed a concert program as soprano saxophonist with the Junction Saxophone Quartet, a professional ensemble that also features Messiah alumni Tim Puglio and Amanda Heim. Their program included works by Guillermo Lago, Antonín Dvorák, and José Oliver Riojas.

Additionally, one of Messiah University’s student saxophone quartets comprised of four of Goranson’s current students (Joseph La Marca, Reid Buffenmyer, Evan Rojas, Connor Appleman) was featured on the Symposium’s College Quartet Series. The Messiah Quartet’s program included works by Phillip Glass and Robert Glogowski (MU ’25).

A note of thanks

I wanted to thank each of you who were so kind by sending my mom a card at Christmas. She was so tickled to get so many cards (over 30). I was there the one day when the employee came in to give her the mail, she said “Shirley OMG you keep getting so many cards”, and my mom just smiled. She didn’t recognize anyone (dementia), but each time she opened one she would just smile, she had them all over her room. So to each of you who showed her this kindness, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s not always the gift you give, but the love and care with something as simple as a card can bring to someone. Just look at that smile on her face. Thank you and may God bless each and every one of you. – Stacy and her mom

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Associate Professor of Marketing Keith Quesenberry had an article published in Entrepreneur Online titled, “Want to Improve Your Brand’s Storytelling? Shift Your POV to Tell a Better Narrative. Here’s How.” It shares insights from his research into brand storytelling and from his textbook Brand Storytelling: Integrated Marketing Communications for the Digital Media Landscape which was published early in the year.

Also, Quesenberry’s Brand Storytelling textbook received a very favorable review in the Journal of Advertising Education by professors at Iowa State University, saying “Brand Storytelling is the first textbook to provide a full-course foundation on the psychology, philosophy, and practice of story-based marketing communication. The textbook targets advertising, public relations, and marketing students with an integrated marketing communications (IMC) framework. Brand Storytelling provides a deep dive into the research and theory behind the use of stories for commercial communications, as well as examples of story use on digital and legacy-media platforms.”

Christmas card for my mom. Some of you may know me, most probably not. But with the Christmas season approaching fast, I wanted to do something special for my mom. My mom is 89 years old, and has dementia, about 2 months ago we had to put her into a nursing home. She wants to go to “her” home, but for her own safety it was a decision my brothers and I had to make. Mom loves getting cards, and I thought it would be nice that she gets some “extra” Christmas cards, she loves looking at them for hours on end. It would make her so happy, if you have the time, to send her a Christmas card and make her very happy for the Christmas holiday.

WANTED

Her name and address –
Mrs. Shirley Sinclair

Thank you and May God bless you and your families this Christmas season. Stacy Portko

November 30

Thursday, November 30th, 2023

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

Titus 3:4-6

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Joanna Behm, EdD, OTR/L, assistant professor of occupational therapy, led a technology roundtable at the 2023 AOTA Education Summit in Denver, Colorado this month. She discussed the multiscene unfolding case study simulation involving interdisciplinary health care students and faculty at the graduate and undergraduate levels that Messiah’s IPE Committee organizes every summer and how the event addresses collaboration, communication and role appreciation across health care disciplines.

Charlene Lane, department chair and program director of social work, has accepted the position as the director of the Office of Aging to pursue her passion for serving the older vulnerable population. Charlene has significantly contributed to the Messiah community in the past six years, serving as a faculty development fellow and inspiring her colleagues to grow in inclusivity and belonging. She is well-loved by her colleagues and students. Charlene invested in countless students and embodied the qualities of a holistic educator. She challenges students to use their intellectual abilities to serve the marginalized and loves as Jesus loves. Lane will continue to serve as an adjunct professor in the Department of Social Work and connect with the Messiah community. Please join the interim dean of the School of Arts, Culture and Society in thanking Charlene and welcoming Ling Dinse as the incoming chair of the social work department.

I am pleased to announce that Cynthia Wells’ leadership role in faculty development will continue with the title of associate dean of faculty development and that alongside this change, Leah Clarke’s title will become director of teaching and learning. This adjustment is reflective of the historic designations of these two roles and expresses well their contributions in developing and delivering university-wide opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and co-curricular educators in coordination with the Office of the Provost. This work takes place within an integrated Office of Faculty Development that includes The Ernest L. Boyer Center and delivers key initiatives including New Educator Orientation, Provost’s Seminar, Teaching and Learning workshops, mentoring programs, consultations, as well as coordination of COE Retreat, May Development Week, and Educator In-Service Day. Please join us in expressing appreciation to Leah and Cynthia for their ongoing contributions to educators at Messiah University.

Senior Honors Presentation-Allie Mast

Join us on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. in Boyer 235 as senior Politics and International Relations major Allie Mast delivers her Senior Honors Presentation, “The Bork Nomination and Degradation of Debate.” Mast will present her research on the 1987 failed nomination of Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court. Mast contends that this nomination marked the prologue to a new era of partisan rancor and polarization, yet she argues, the debate during the Bork nomination stands out as far more committed to constitutional theory than the nominations that have followed.

Advent Scripture reading and song service

The honors program hosts an Advent Scripture and song service on Monday, Dec. 4 from 7-8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. All are invited to listen to passages read from the Old and New Testaments on the theme of Advent and to sing Advent carols together, accompanied by instrumentalists from the Messiah community.

You’re Invited: MOT Research Symposium

The Research Symposium will be held on Thursday, Dec. 7, at our Winding Hill campus, where occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) grad students meet for class. Come and go as you please between 5 and 7 p.m.

Their research covers the following topics:
• Oral Hygiene Interventions for Children with Autism
• Perceptions of OTs and OT Students with Disabilities
• OT Programs’ Strategies for Recruitment & Admissions of Diverse Students
• Impact of Peer Support on Social Participation for Burn Survivors
• Perceptions of Coaching in Early Intervention
• OT Students’ Perceptions of Level 1 Fieldwork
• The Use of Sensory Rooms in Schools
• Predictive Value of GG on Discharge Destination

You’ll also have an opportunity to take a tour of the Winding Hill building, learn about the Master of Occupational Therapy program, interact with current OT students, and enjoy some light refreshments.

As the Civil Rights movement is brewing, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist state senator and a no-nonsense state librarian in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak and hope. Inspired by true events.

Seed Library Lunch and Learn

Join us on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Library Athenaeum for a lunch and learn with Mt. Airy Orchards and a chance to sample different varieties of apples. Please remember to bring your own lunch and register at the following link: https://forms.gle/XRX9w7gfAwnGjJ4r8

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own an orchard? A pretty easy job, right? Yes, you must prune your trees, and mow occasionally throughout the spring and summer. But between these necessary jobs, there is plenty of down time to relax by the pool and watch the fruit grow. Fall is a bit busier; the apples must be picked. But blessed winter! During those long, cold, and dark months, there is ample time to nap and read books.

If any of this was true, there would be more farmers in the world! Farming is a labor intensive, year-around, relentless profession. Join us on November 8 to discover what it takes to run Mt. Airy Orchards, located just minutes from the Messiah Campus. Mt. Airy grows and sells multiple varieties of berries, peaches, plums, and apples. They also successfully operate a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA), an Agritourism business including summer programs for children, a play area with a fall corn maze, pick your own fruit, homemade baked goods, a retail store, ice cream and homemade meals, local artisan’s talents, and the list continues! We will walk through a typical year and the challenges each season offers. As a bonus, Mt. Airy grows over 20 different varieties of apples, several of which will be available for sampling! Join us to discover your new favorite apple!

Most recently, he served the last two years at Eastern University as a senior admissions counselor and is thrilled to bring those skills back to his alma mater.

Tania Tirado Colon, admissions counselor for Latino student recruitment: Tania comes to us as a native of Puerto Rico who moved her family to Pennsylvania in 2020. Microsoft 365 for Windows

Still Running Office 2016 on your Windows computer? You can tell if you have Office 2016 by looking at your Office icons. If it shows 2016, you still have it. The update to Microsoft 365 is now available through Software Center. If you do not see the option in Software Center, it has probably already been installed. To upgrade to Microsoft 365, follow these steps:
1. Close all Microsoft programs including Outlook
2. Open Software Center from your Desktop or search for Software Center under the Start Menu
3. Find Microsoft 365 64-bit
4. Click Install (plan on 10-15 minutes for this process)
5. After installation is complete, navigate to Software Center again
6. Click Office 365 Taskbar & Start Menu Fix (this will remove those 2016 icons)
7. Sign back into your account
Contact Tech Support if you have any issues or questions regarding this.
